- It's still one of my favorite snares of all time. And here I take you through the journey of removing the rubber gaskets off of a newer model. This should prove to be enjoyable whether you're an expert or oblivious to it all. This drum is an important part of musical history.
Thanks for watching.
Loved this video. I bought a new LM402 about 6 years ago and it came with the gaskets. Didn't think anything of it at the time and I loved the way the drum sounded. After watching this video, it took the gaskets off and the drum is now of the chart! I LOVE the way the drum sounds without the gaskets. Thanks for opening my eyes!
Wow. I would never have believed it, but YES I think the drum sounds way better without the gaskets !
I could listen to you play that all day!
You sir are a great drummer!
There may be the ever slight possibility that the gaskets prevent molecules of two different metal from mixing. I know it sounds absurd. I've worked @ (Mosaic.com) phosphate plants and where aluminum conduit is run, oftentimes the conduit has to get wrapped in electrical tape where the stainless u-bolt/clamp touches the conduit. For a snare drum in a home environment I kinda think it's a non issue.
Hi bro. I have a question. I'm looking for the same sound you have on your supra. I'm struggling finding that sound with mine. I have ambassador coated on top and stock snare side and wires. Any suggestions on tuning?
Without gaskets it is dryer. Beautiful. Jesse how much tension do you put on your bottom snare heads? whether it's brass or aluminum? is there a difference? I have brass. Are they all the way up/or half as much? Thanks
I do notice a slight difference in sound. Hoping to get a 6.5" when the wallet allows. Nice Our Lady of Guadalupe mirror :).
Seems a little brighter without gaskets that could be accomplished tuning the gasketed version up but I suspect you get more openness without them and trust your opinion to take em out.
Hey dude! I just picked up a really nice condition 1972 Supraphonic, but it needs a new bottom hoop! Any suggestions on a good place to pick one up?
The tuning is a little different. But I hear that the gaskets make the drum a bit thicker/puffier sounding if you will. It's like a gentle mid/bass boost. Assuming you're using a coated ambassador for the batter, I think that's a good thing. +1 for gaskets. lol
What size is the snare?
Sounds awesome!!
how about the dreaded lug splay?
Was that a 5" #400 or a super sensitive....or a hammered brass/copper/aluminum/gold/tin/pewter/zinc/maple/silver/sensitone/......lol.....
I'm cranking up the reso and still not working for me. Thanks
I hear the difference. could it just be the tuning?
Great vid, totally agree, lose the gaskets. I have a 93 402 and I love it. The kit sounds great as well. What mic do you have on the kick?
Thanks buddy. I enjoy it! I've been using the Audix D6 lately. I dig that mic. Used to use the D112 before that.
+Jesse Sprinkle very cool!
Asum.
The Supra never seems to sound as loud as many other brands, when played live, unmiced.
