This happens from time to time with water softeners, iron filters, tannin filters and back washable filters. This video explains how to troubleshoot and fix it for your family!
Gary hi, I need to know what is wrong with my fleck 5800sxt. It went into regeneration in the middle of the night and never came out of it and was draining all night. I turned the power off to the pump and it stopped. I turn the power back on and it is still in regen mode and drains. I tried resetting and nothing, I go through regen stages and nothing changes. Please help me
My husband just realized fast water was flowing from the drain line. We called our servicer and they told us it would be $205 for the first 30 minutes and $90 for each 30 minute period thereafter. My husband turned the knobs to bypass and I found your video. Sure enough, it was in REGEN mode. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Five days of the excessive water leak and notice from water company. They bypass proved it was the softener. Thanks a million !!!!! Keeping on bypass until got a plan for next steps
Thank you Gary!!! I ordered the parts from the link you provided. Replaced them this past weekend and it stopped the constant draining. Saved me money by not calling a plumber. Thanks again.
This was such a great video. I had water running for about 4 or 5 weeks, and after watching this video, I finally knew what and why. It took only a few minutes to get it fixed. Thanks to this video, I was able to do it myself.

Thank you Gary for this video! I was told we'd need to replace our 3 year old Waterite unit because "we just don't repair these". I figured I could try and take it apart before ordering the parts just to be sure I could. After a disassembly and cleanup, my serious drain tube leak stopped! Saved me the $200 for parts, and the $2000 of an unnecessary replacement. Sincere thanks!

Thanks for the video, mine was in (regen). And I had no idea until I watched this video. The well pump would not stop running, I thought a pipe blew under the house. Luckily that was not the case. Thank you so much.

I have never seen ione that was hard wired before. I would remove the faceplate by pulling forward on it, then unplug the power supply from the circuit board.
Great Video, saved me some money I can't afford, I might add to take the piston off the spindle and unclip you have to rotate the spindle so it is accessible, at least that's the way I had to install the new one on a Hellenbrand Promate 1 water conditioner, Thanks for making these video's available.
Hi Gary, The water softener system in my house came along as a package with the house it when I bought it. I replaced the seal pack in the iron filter earlier this year when it started leaking. The iron filter had a brine piston on the back of the seal pack. I replaced that as well as the seal pack as it came in a package when I bought the replacement parts. Will this brine piston cause an issue with the performance of the iron filter if it doesn't need it? Thanks!
I have the same softener. Except mine has the gray wire on side leading to the little turbine).. I need the parts you changed in this video....would you have them in stock ? (I live in lindsay and would drive up to your store if you have them. No one in this area has those parts)
Great video Gary. Thank you. I had pulled the plug during a regen and pulled a piece of broken rubber washer out of the drain line/hole, but then it's been constantly draining after that. Based upon your video, it seems that my kenmore ultrasoft425 may need replacement piston & seals since water is draining in service mode. The draining stops momentarily in between a few of the cycles but starts draining again in service mode. Does my thinking seem accurate?
Hi Gary, and thanks for your informational videos, they're great! I have a CULLIGAN HE1.25 Water Softener that is less than 2 years old. Its consistently draining into the drain at a heavy drip. I called Culligan, and of course they want a ridiculous trip charge $$$ to see what "may or may not still be warrantied". I watched this video but wondered, are all these units pretty much the same? I executed a manual REGEN to see if maybe the motor just didn't get the piston to the right position, but it repeated the discrepancy after the REGEN cycle. I suspect its internal and possibly a seal on one of those pistons and am pretty handy but wanted to see if you knew if there was any more CULLIGAN HE1.25 specific info out there to help with disassembly? Thanks again for your awesome videos!
Sorry to hear, yes the seals are gone and you can't get parts anywhere else. This is why I never recommend proprietary products. Unfortunately now you will need to pay their "ridiculous trip charge $$$"
Thanks You Garry!, I got paid $280/month because the Recycle Water run none stop and I didn't know, right now my Machine still running bypass, I'll try to morrow,
Thank you so much! We replaced those parts and bought the tool and our softener is no longer leaking water into the sink. One word of advice to others trying to do this fix is make sure you are not loosening the white gear but the black collar behind it (we accidentally started undoing the white gear once we broke the black collar loose and when we reassembled we got error code 101). We adjusted the white gear and re-seated everything and then pressed 'next' and 'regen' for 3 seconds to get it to recalibrate the board/laser eye so it could figure out the piston location. Also, in terms of preventative maintenance how long does the seal pack/pistons typically last, should we replace every.... 5 years?
Thank you for your information. The seal pack can last anywhere from about 5 years to over 20. Really depends on how much dirt and iron is in your water.
Hello Gary. I have a watts system. The drain line won’t stop leaking water. Do I do the same as you are telling me in this video or is it different with this brand. If so, how do I get the parts. Thanks
Yes, in the sense that you should bypass it. You will need to check with Watts in terms of where to get the parts and even if they are available. Then you’ll need to get a manual and see if you want to tackle it yourself
Thanks Gary. After I swapped the parts, my water has a sulfur smell. It didn’t smell like that prior to replacing parts. Any thoughts on what went wrong?
Most Hellenbrand use the Clack WSD1 valve like the one in this video. Check out this video at about the 6 minute mark where I talk about how to identify if yours is a Clack valve ua-cam.com/video/DmGqK_8y3G8/v-deo.html If so, you need this tool and these parts and can get them from my website here waterestore.ca/search?type=product&q=clack*%20piston*
The drain/overflow tube keeps popping off and flooding my laundry room. It has happened twice both times while I wasn't home. Is there a way to secure that tube so that it doesn't keep happening?
Yes, I have seen that happen before. You can change the fitting to a mroe sucure one as I discuss in this video at the 56 minute mark ua-cam.com/video/NHXBXCvGVyQ/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for your wonderful video! We have a water softener which I thought Clack because the plumber said it was but I found it is Ultima brand. ( I didn’t have any knowledge when we installed it and I just believed what the plumber said. I have no idea why he said it’s Clack. I was trying to contact him but he is not replying.) Do you happen to know Ultima water softner? It looks very similar to Clack. I desperately need to buy replacement parts. Please help me!
No, they definitley are not Clack. These are very problematic water softeners. I believe they are made by Pentair. I ahve worked on these in the past but won't in the future as they are almost impossible to service. I suggest you replace it with one of these waterestore.com/products/hum-deluxe-water-softener-30-000-grain
They can but they might actually damage the new seals. Did you order the rebuild kit from us here? waterestore.com/products/clack-ws1-softener-rebuild-kit If so, email us at info@waterestore.com to get it sorted for you.
Hey Gary, love your videos and have learned alot. Just curious, I put my system into bypass to sevice it and when i put it back into regular service it doesnt want to automatically go into bypass when its in regen. Do i need to reset something or did i mess something up? Thank you for any and all help
Sorry for the double commenting on 2 different videos Gary. So I replaced the seal pack and parts and all installed nice and easy per your video and as I turned the system back on I noticed the drive gear moving much slower than before. I'd imagine its because of the new seal pack but how fast should it be actually moving? Thank you again for all the help. I greatly appreciate it! 👍
Excellent video, very helpful! I have a question: I removed my seal pack and the pistons and some seals were clearly damaged inside the pack but the pistons look perfectly fine. Do I really need to replace the pistons as well or is just the seal pack enough? Thanks!
Thank you for your video!! Very educational for homeowners. I learned from your video to at least troubleshoot through using the bypass valves! I heard the draining stop after a few seconds. The issue is that the system I have seems to be different from the one you explain in your video (through looking at stickers on it and googling I think we have a EWS-1354-7000) any thoughts on how to further troubleshoot and figure out what part in this is making the constant running of water when operating?
If water is constantly flowing to drain the pistons and seals need to be replaced, doesn't matter what brand of water softener but you need your specific brands piston and seal pack.
Hi Gary: great video. Thank you. I have a question: if the drain runs continuously due to some of the reason mentioned in your video, is the water still be treated?
This just saved me a world of hurt. I have to do a lot of things for myself since I'm not made of money, but the world of water softeners has been foreign and almost magical to me. Mine was stuck in a cycle of constant draining to the point where I'd need to kill the breaker every night before bed and before leaving for work or else the pump kept kicking on. This was WAY simpler than I expected and I feel goofy for not fixing things sooner. PA well water is notoriously brutal with high levels of iron and calcium.
Hi Gary, great video! I have a strange issue where after regen, the piston on my Clack water softener doesn't return to the correct position, thus causing the draining. If I pull the plug from the board and wait 10 seconds before plugging it back in, the system does push the piston to the correct position, and the draining stops. Any idea as to what may be causing this? Is it a faulty board?
Probably not the board. It sounds like the piston is getting stuck in the seal pack, I would rebuild the valve, we have the parts here waterestore.com/products/clack-ws1-softener-rebuild-kit-wrench
@@water_estore Thanks Gary - the weird thing is, we had a water softener maintenance guy come over two weeks ago, and he replaced the seal pack right then and there. Could it have gone bad already?
need some assistance with my Dupure Evolve water softener. "check Salt level". I have emptied it of loose salt removed salt bridge added iron out, added salt and ran regeneration cycle twice still get "check salt level" after regeneration.
Check salt level comes on when it thinks you need salt. It means absolutely nothing. It expects you to tell it when you have added salt and based on the number of regenerations and the settings it has calculated that you now need salt. Check your manual or just ignore it.
I replaced my seal kit and piston but the piston was not attached to the drive assembly. I think that clip in the other side of the drive assembly maybe be broke. Can you advise what part I would need? Also can I buy the whole drive assembly?
Do u sell or ship new units to US and what brands do u recommend of those in your line? My 20 yr old cull system may need replacement as I have a drain trickle even after replacing seal pack. I can also hear the water running in my sink but the RO system bypass stops that - but nothing stops the trickle in the softener. Seems like the motor is running alot too.
Replace mine and got an error 102. Hand tight. Tried disconnecting power and resetting motor by holding next and regen. Still getting error. Checked the new stack and free of debris. Is there some sort of adjustment needed on the "white gear" that controls the plunger?
I would check the suggestions in this video ua-cam.com/video/v_oF5w5dB1U/v-deo.htmlsi=6fIhnXV3nALG0d44 No adjustment needed, you may have reassembled the valve incorrectly.
Gary, I have an almost 30 year old Aerobic Iron Filter to remove Iron & Manganeze and an aerobic Air Elimination Tank air injection filter to remove sulphur smell. We do not add chemicals, don't change filters or anything. Things are working fine, water seems fine. Question is that the backwash goes on for over an hour, almost 2 hours. Seems like TONS of water go be going into septic system. Is this a malfunction? Do you have a suggestion on what to do? My well person said this is normal. It doesn't seem normal - at all. Thank you for any help!
I do not have any experience with that type of filter but the water usage does seem excessive. Ours runs for about 45 minutes. waterestore.ca/search?type=product&q=iron*%20hum*%20fo*
I have an old Autotrol 255/460i system which was leaking like a sieve until I purchased a valve disk kit recommended by Pentair to try. Since my plumber was coming over anyway I asked him to install the flappers. That fixed the leak from the valve itself, now I have a lot of water coming out of my drain hose. I haven't tried shutting off the bypass valve (which the video says will determine if the 255 valve is still defective) because the system is in regeneration mode. Water now is really coming out of the drain hose but I read elsewhere during regeneration as much as 66 gallons can be drained during regen. Is this accurate? Also I have the timer set at the right hour of the day but regeneration is occurring at 9 a.m. I thought the system was automatically set for 2 or 2:30 a.m.?
Quite honestly, I have always hated those old Autotrol valves. They are very finnicky and difficult to problem solve. Yes, you can easily get 66 gallons or more water used during a regeneration with one of those. Yes, with the current time set correctly, it should regenerate at 2:30 am. When you finally get fed up with your old softener, check out one of these waterestore.com/products/hum-deluxe-water-softener-30-000-grain
I have a slow drain and when I put it on bypass it stops the draining. Does that mean I have to replace the entire cylinder or just the pistons and seal pack? Can he system be left on bypass to stop the draining while I wait for the seals?
Yes, you need to replace the pistons and seal pack, we have them here waterestore.com/products/clack-ws1-softener-rebuild-kit-wrench you can leave it on bypass until you are ready
Rain soft - water softener. For iron TC-100-10 and TC-100-As. Hello, I wish I would have seen your video before I unplugged mine during regen or back wash phase because of the amount of time and water that had drained .. What do I do to close the valves back so that there not stuck open! Tia.
I don't understand the question. Are you asking how to close the bypass valves? This video shows you how to operate the byapss valve ua-cam.com/video/q0kRRS6C20Q/v-deo.html
What position should the drain assembly be in when you screw it into the housing? It looks like yours is about 1 inch out from the white gear piece. Is that true for all? I have the same exact Clack unit that you have.
Sorry, not sure what you mean. The drain elbow goes into the housing and is held in with n "E" clip, it doesn't matter which way it is orientated. Now sure what the white gear piece is that you are mentioning.
@@water_estore I think he is talking about the screw on the front that advances the cycle and moves the pistons I too wondered about that as I’m concerned that because I’m clumsy I may have moved the large white gear that meshes with the face piece. Also mine looks identical to the clack version you showed but it is branded as a waterite. I’m a plumber in Canada and am trying to learn a bit about these softeners as I have one at home. I also would like to get that sweet wrench you showed in your video.
The answer is it doesn’t matter the motor resets the position of the plunger by bottoming out and spinning back in it doesn’t matter where the large white cog lands @George Lynn Davis
Hi Gary, 1st off I would like to say that your videos are awesome. I am trying to replace the seal pack in my Greenway (WS1 Clack rebrand) Filox Iron Filter, I bought the seal pack and the 2 pistons and tool. I followed the video and removed the drain, electronics and the gear with the 2 pistons attached, I am now at the seal pack but it won't come out, there is a lot of rust build-up in it, maybe this is what is holding it? Any ideas how I could pull the seal pack out? Thanks.
@@water_estore Hi Gary, just an update for your fans out there in case someone runs in same issue. Found out that there is actually a tool for this, it is called "Clack Stack Puller Tool for the WS1, C-series". The Part # is V3022. I ordered it and when I received it I gave it a try and voila! very easy to pull the stack with the tool. Cleaned all the rust buildup from inside the valve, installed new stack and leak to drain is now a thing of the past. Cheers!
I have a new iron filter that was set up in my house and the bleed off line seems to be leaking water every hour and a half for for about 15 minutes of steady flow water. Is this correct or do you think something is wrong with it?
I have a clack ws1 which I’ve replaced the stack and both pistons 2 times but it still leaks to the drain. Is there anything else that should be replaced to fix it?
@GarytheWaterGuy HI, I have ecowater ERR3700R20. I have replaced tank and still not getting any water. Unfortunately it's not allowing water into entire home. Any ideas what to do next?
Hi Gary, I was replacing my iron filter and cut off the main water supply to my house. After unhooking the iron filter, I noticed one of the lines from the softener continued to run for a long period of time even without power and no water going into it with the main line shut off. Is this normal or do I have an issue with my softener?
@water_estore thanks for the suggestion. I left it in bypass for several hours, and when I checked it again the leak had stopped. When I took it off bypass it leaked for a few seconds then stopped completely. If it starts leaking again after the next regeneration cycle what would you recommend for replacement?

We just encountered the same problem with the same model. Is there a video that you followed to replace the pistons and/or seal pack? Or a store/website that sells the parts? Thank you.
My Hellenbrand Storm Promate 6.0 just started draining and spilling out roughly 1 cup of water out of the bottom 3/8" rubber line that is on the bottom of what I am assuming is the ozone filter when it goes into regen mode. Please help!
Thanks Gary,it looks like my system ,it might be Hellenbrand but anyway it was constantly draining into my sump and seemed like the basement was humid. We have a Hisense dehumidifier and have to empty it every two days. I am calling American Aqua because we are leasing it. They can fix it, why am I paying $91.00 a month for me to fix it. Appreciate your video. Robert Mellinger South Lyon, MI
So water continues to trickle through to the drain even after I closed those valves to 'bypass' . ..so that means the seal pack and pistons are ok ? Its something else ?
I would bypass the softener and wait for a while. If there is no water flowing into the softener where is the water coming from that flows to the drain?
If no water comes out when u open bypass then is it working ok? My issue is a constant drip. Upstairs there is a drain tube that goes into the washer housing. The dripping is driving me insane. The aquascience triton softener is 3 years old.
I started the regen mode but the water keeps draining out it doesn't slow down so when should I put it to bypass mode so I can change the sealpack. I think I know my issue I gotta put into bypass mode b4 starting the regen to drain the last bit of water I think
So, my softener was making a lot of noise. Sounded like wind noise more than rushing water, and had been running for a good 12 hours. The dial looked to be pointed at backwash mode. When I bypassed the tank, the sound stopped. Also, when I switched the dial to slow fill, or fast fill, it also went away. When putting back into backwash, the sound returns. Based on your description it is a post-fill softener. It is an Aquamerica product, and looks nothing any of those mentioned in this video. Does it need to be in backwash mode to run properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It does need to be in backwash mode for a short period of time during regeneration. This UA-cam video should help you to understand ua-cam.com/video/udmE-hhh084/v-deo.html
I don't quite understand. I have an Ecowater water softener. If I put it in bypass, then no water is going through the softener anymore so of course it wouldn't show a leak. I don't see how this in any way solves the problem.
It tells you that when your water softener is in service, no water should be going to the drain but you have just confirmed that it is, so your valve needs to be rebuilt to fix it.
What would cause a Kinetico 2060s to flood a basement? System just installed and we went on vacation. Didn't use water and came home to 5000 gallons of water in our basement?

Why is it necessary to change the pistons when replacing the seal pack?
The pistons get debris on them and wear out casuing leaking past the seals.

Thanks You Garry!, I got paid $280/month because the Recycle Water run none stop and I didn't know, right now my Machine still running bypass, I'll try to morrow,
Hey, I got a Springwell softener, have you worked with those? Wonder where I can get these parts, not in their website
I really don't know. The Clack parts we have will not fit their systems.
@@water_estore thank you, I got on a call with them. They sent the whole softener head replacement. Pretty good warranty i think
my fiberglass neutralizer tank is leaking slowly from the bottom side. are they repairable using fiberglass cloth and resin?
Great question! No they are not repairable. It is far safer to replace the tank.
@@water_estore its annoying as its a tiny leak. is it a real hassle to replace a tank? must be fully drained of course
@@water_estore ok good to know! Thank you. I think our softener is about 9 years old so I'll try to remember to do it in 2030 if I still live there!
Not related to the parts swap. Water softeners don't remove sulfur either way.
My manual offers two seal stack sizes. A 1” and 1.25”. How do I know which one to order before disassembly. Thanks
1.25" is for large commercial units. If yours is a 1", we have them here waterestore.com/products/clack-ws1-spacer-stack-assembly-v3005
Will this tool work on hellenbrand equipment? Also where can I get that tool? Excellent video tutorial.. Thank you
Most Hellenbrand use the Clack WSD1 valve like the one in this video.
Could you please share the Amazon link to buys piston and other changed items ..

Mine is stuck on the regen cycle. Water doesnt stop flowing at all. Is it safe to leave in bypass mode until the next morning ?
Yes, you can leave it in bypass mode for as long as you like.
Thank you so much for your wonderful video!
We have a water softener which I thought Clack because the plumber said it was but I found it is Ultima brand. ( I didn’t have any knowledge when we installed it and I just believed what the plumber said. I have no idea why he said it’s Clack. I was trying to contact him but he is not replying.)
Do you happen to know Ultima water softner? It looks very similar to Clack. I desperately need to buy replacement parts. Please help me!
No, they definitley are not Clack. These are very problematic water softeners. I believe they are made by Pentair. I ahve worked on these in the past but won't in the future as they are almost impossible to service. I suggest you replace it with one of these waterestore.com/products/hum-deluxe-water-softener-30-000-grain
Can the old pistons be reused?
I received my WS1 kit but the pistons are missing from the package
They can but they might actually damage the new seals. Did you order the rebuild kit from us here? waterestore.com/products/clack-ws1-softener-rebuild-kit If so, email us at info@waterestore.com to get it sorted for you.
what other reasons are there to rep[lace the spacer stack and pistons?
Not usually unless you have lots of iron and don't have an iron filter before the water softener which could cause the spacer stack to clog with iron.
Hey Gary, love your videos and have learned alot. Just curious, I put my system into bypass to sevice it and when i put it back into regular service it doesnt want to automatically go into bypass when its in regen. Do i need to reset something or did i mess something up? Thank you for any and all help
It bypasses the system internally during regeneration. You will not see it move the external bypass that you use.
Thanks!
You can try just replacing the seal pack but the manufacturer recommends replacing both at the same time.
Where can I get that wrench
We have it here waterestore.com/products/clack-ws1-valve-disassembly-wrench-v3193
Thank you
You're welcome. Please share video with friends and family.
It would have been great if you could mention some places where those parts are available
Sure thing, we have them on our website here waterestore.com/products/clack-ws1-softener-rebuild-kit
Hi Gary: great video. Thank you. I have a question: if the drain runs continuously due to some of the reason mentioned in your video, is the water still be treated?
Yes it will but you need to get it fixed because you are wasting a lot of water.
Hi Gary, I put the system I to bypass and the water still flows from the drain line, what does this mean?
I can’t see if that is possible unless the bypass isn’t working correctly
@@water_estore I replaced the seal pack and all was fixed
The o ring seal have rolled out of the bypass valve, you can pick it and put it in place.Thats what I did and it solved my problem.

Glad it helped! Please share video with friends and family!
Sure can. Please email us a picture of eactly what part you are referring to at info@waterestore.com and we can help you out.
Yes, we do. Our HUM Water Filtration water softeners are best, like this one waterestore.com/products/hum-deluxe-water-softener-30-000-grain
Having this issue with a GE water softener, GXSH40V. Is it the same procedure?
Yes, not sure where you would find the parts thought
I have a slow drain and when I put it on bypass it stops the draining. Does that mean I have to replace the entire cylinder or just the pistons and seal pack? Can he system be left on bypass to stop the draining while I wait for the seals?

Hi Hello Sir
How much those parts that needs to be replace for pentair 7000 sxt? Thanks
Sorry but we do not sell those parts for the Pentair.
Thanks.
Good question. Typically I just carefully pry it out with a screwdriver or small pry bar.
Cheers!

Hi Gary,
I was replacing my iron filter and cut off the main water supply to my house. After unhooking the iron filter, I noticed one of the lines from the softener continued to run for a long period of time even without power and no water going into it with the main line shut off. Is this normal or do I have an issue with my softener?
You have an issue and this video will help you to solve it.
If those part has been replaced but leak it didn’t stop? What would be the other issue?
Likely something cracked inside the valve itself.
I have a Clack WS-1 that is slow dripping from the backwash line. When I put the softener into bypass it still slow drips. Any ideas?
Does it keep slow dripping when bypassed 2 hours later?
@water_estore thanks for the suggestion. I left it in bypass for several hours, and when I checked it again the leak had stopped. When I took it off bypass it leaked for a few seconds then stopped completely. If it starts leaking again after the next regeneration cycle what would you recommend for replacement?
Gary hi, I need to know what is wrong with my fleck 5800sxt. It went into regeneration in the middle of the night and never came out of it and was draining all night. Likely need to replace the pistons and seal pack
Sorry I really don't know, I have heard that these are quite problematic. Time to contact Hellenbrand
Mine tries to regenerate twice and throws an e2 error. So I can’t release the pressure. What’s another method?
Shut off the water before the system, bypass and then try to regenerate and it should release enough pressure.
Yes, that is the advantage of leasing. Mind you those payments really add up after, 3, 5, 10 years.
The piston and seals in the valve keep the water from dripping to drain while in service.
Hi. It turned out one of the rings in the seal were cracked.
I started the regen mode but the water keeps draining out it doesn't slow down so when should I put it to bypass mode so I can change the sealpack. I think I know my issue I gotta put into bypass mode b4 starting the regen to drain the last bit of water I think
Yes, bypass first, regen to release the pressure, then go for it.
Maybe bad question......do you have to remove the drain line?
No, just make sure that it is bypassed.
