Thank you so much for all the info on this channel! Based on your videos I looked for and got a water softener with an original clack ws1 valve in germany. Today I noticed that my brine tank was full. After watching this video I looked at the injector and indeed, it was cloged! Now it's working again, thank you so much!

I was messing with my 40 year old softener trying to just get another week or so of use out of it but when I watched this I realized it definitely is a lost cause and I’ll just have to be patient and wait till the new one arrives! No matter what I do it only adds water but all the seals and gaskets are older than me and the float mechanism is a green blob of corrosion! No way it’s going to pull a vacuum to suck up the brine, thanks Gary for saving me time and a bigger water bill!

These videos are amazing to watch. We have been in our house for almost 10 years, (house was built in 2008) and this is the first time we have had issues with our softening system. Hose connected to the brine tank keeps popping out out of the brine tank, and water ends up all over the floor. I am addicted to watching these videos now to learn more about it. We have someone coming to look at it, everything my husband and I have tried hasn't been working so far. And still leaks water all over the floor.🥴. *Roughly how much would a whole new water softener system be*, IF we need a whole new system. We are in Ontario Canada. We just cleaned the brine tank out, so no salt clog anymore... there was one about 2-3 inches thick. Yuck. And my husband said it to regenerate a few times. So we think it might be time for a new one.

Hi Gary, great videos. Now I know that I will need to service my system and replace a whole bunch of things since it was never done in the last 12 years. You can expect an order from me soon. One question I did not find answers to goes like this. I have two Clack WS1 valves and the drain line flow control elbows leak water from the little stub that comes out the side of the fitting. I have added a piece of clear hose to direct the water to the sump hole but would like to fix it and understand why water comes out of that orifice.
Great question! We just fixed one of these for a customer last week. That stub contains a small one way vent that was designed to make the backwash cycle quieter. After a time it leaks. You just need to replace that drain elbow. I had a problem with the drain line constantly running. I replaced the seal pack and both pistons and corrected that issue. Now I have a problem with the brine tank filling to the point of the float shutoff activating. I went through the steps in the video, including checking the injector. I disconnected the brine line at the float assembly and ran through each stage of the regen cycle. There is water being sent to the brine tank for every stage of the regen cycle. During the normal service position, there is no issue. Any ideas on how to proceed? Thank you in advance!

Great video. I have the Kenmore Ultra Soft 250. I have gone completely through it, got it all redone, but often see the water in the brine tank up high. The float on that valve rod is adjustable, but I cannot find any literature even in the manual on how high the float should be. Is there a general rule of thumb on the height it hould be at? I have heard 10 inches, but at what point should that be measured? Also, if I fill the brine tank up into the 7 or 8, should the water level still be below the salt? Thanks.
Great question. The float does not control the level of the water, the valve does based on the programming. Typically there should be about 1 1/2 feet of water on average.
Thanks for your video. My brine tank had the standing water problem weeks ago, and I scooped out all the water and it seemed to be normal for a while, and when I checked again few days ago, the tank has water level very high again, and like last time, with some dirt floating on the water. can i manfully do the regeneration while the brine tank is full of water?
Yes, but you need to determine what is causing that high water level by troubleshooting.
Great content. The pre installed water softener plumbing in my house seems to have the water softener drain running from the garage to upstairs laundry, which is about a 10ft rise in elevation. Would this create a backflow into the water softener? Not sure if there is any valve that can be installed to prevent this.
They are often installed that way. No problem as it is.
Hey Gary, thanks for doing these videos. I have a softener where the brine tank has recently been getting too full. Last night I cleaned out the salt and there was a lot of salt sludge at the bottom so I suspected it was a salt clog. I followed your directions for salt clogs. I did not regenerate the system because it was 8 pm but I knew it would regenerate at 4 am the next morning. This morning I checked the brine tank and it had maybe triple the amount of water I initially put in. So water is coming into brine but obviously not going out. Also, my brine tank does not appear to have a float. I removed it in the cleaning and did not see a float. What do you think?
Did you check the other things like a clogged injector or drain line?

Great videos and you helped me start troubleshooting.
I think I always or for the longest time had lots of water in my brine tank or at least I think I did. I would say the tank is just below half full. My brine tank would be the size of a big large plastic garbage can. It’s big.
So I cleaned it all out and took the float out and checked everything and blew with my mouth to make sure the float was working when I’d move it up and down and it does work.
I checked the brine line and the connections at the Fleck 5600 and everything was clean.
So from empty I would fill the brine tank until the water is about 6 to 8 inches under the float then run a full cycle. I can hear and feel the water leaving the brine tank and when it’s filling. When everything is done and finished the water level is about just half way filled in my brine tank and looking at the float the water is just under the float which I’m assuming is correct because I’m assuming when it’s refilling the float shuts the water off but when it’s completely done should the water level be this high right under the float or should it be 6 inches under the float. I thought I seen that for the first cycle starts to drain the brine tank again that the float needs to be down or the water level needs to be below the float.
Keep in mind that the float is never used unless the water softener malfunctions and does not shut off when filling the brine tank.

Ok great thanks. So after cleaning again and trying to troubleshoot or trying to figure out stuff when I manually turn right away to brine rinse the water in the brine line is actually filling the brine tank there’s no suction happening until quite a while after this happens as I have the brine line disconnected off the float and hanging in the brine tank.
When I disconnect the brine line from the head and place a bucket there when I manually turn it to brine rinse it will shoot water out fast and I’ll need to turn the dial by hand quite a ways for suction to start I guessing about half way turn in this cycle. Is this normal? PS also put a new drain hose line it’s not long about 3 feet but the last foot and a half was filled with iron sediment buildup inside with a reduced inside diameter

Hey Gary, Have a question for you. I have had my water boss since 1993. It is a 93 WB. It's been a great unit. Yesterday it started a 05-error code. Making a clicking sound near the motor. Do you think it is a piston or motor problem? I have no control on the board with the error code so I can't regenerate it to release the pressure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey---what is going on. I just listened to you video that stated that the Boss water softener was the best and now you recommend HUM. Which one is the best? I have limited space and not enough room for a two tank system. I'm confused.
Great question! WaterBoss is the more efficient and if your situation is compatible with their size, it is a great choice. But, the Clack valve is a better valve and although not as efficient is much better suited to a larger home owner audience.

Gary, my brine only overflows when the temperature outside is 90 or higher, what is the heat impacting that causes the tank to fill up and overflow?

I have done regenerations for the past 3 days. There is still salt in the bottom of the brine tank do I keep regenerating until there is no salt left or do I remove the salt manually?
You can do it either way.
Hi Gary, I have a EMC 10 Water softener and its brine tank is getting filled up to the top on manual regeneration. I have checked the outflow tube and it works OK at the begining of the Regen cycle draining out water and after 10mins or so out of 74min cycle, the water starts to build up in brine tank. Overflow tube is all clear. Brine tank outlet tube has got no clog where it goes to the top into the main tank (resin tank) area. I have also tried to put 100-300mls of Resin cleaner in the brine tank while the water is still on but it has achieved nothing. When I do manual regen, I keep the inlet and outlet water valve in functional position. Any thing else which can be the cause of this problem or does it need new resin? Will appreciate your diagnosis and treatment on this ill water softener, DOCTOR Gary . Thank you so much

Hi Gary, thanks for your amazing videos. I've been troubleshooting this issue for a while and still can't figure it out. So I cleaned the injection valve, and ran a regen cycle. When it was in the brine cycle I can see the water leaving the brine tank and water is disappearing. I stepped away. After the regen cycle I checked back and it's full of water again, up to 2/3 of the way above the amoount of salt I have. I have about the bags worth of salt in there. Is it my setting? I live in Stouffville, On, and the water is hard here, so I set it at 17.
It might be but was there a time when the softener was new when there was less water after regeneration?
@@GarytheWaterGuy It's only been a year old, not sure how they set it up, but it sets to regen when it reaches 0. So my thought is that it's adding water head of time, but I can be wrong.
I have watched about a dozen how to videos today and my equipment doesn't look like any of them. Everyone has digital while mine is a know you have to turn. Also how long do you leave it in regen or does it move along by itself? So many questions and no one seems to have my equipment

One thing I couldn't find is how to empty the water from the brine tank. Ours is now 3/4 full and it has never done that before. It is 5 years old and usually it just covers 2 bags of salt at the bottom, maybe a foot of two of water. Is there a way I can manually empty the water from the brine tank now through the valve or setting?

Yes, once you have repaired what caused the overflow just regenerate the water softener a couple of times and it will suck out the brine and return it to the correct level.

I've got an old softener. It just started continually running water into the tank. It over flowed last night. So I emptied it and am regenerating right now. Any ideas? Or should I just go through all the steps?
It could be one of a few things including a frozen drain line. Follow the steps in the video.
Fill timer runs out but it continues filling, no leaks. Sometimes it continues running after the rinse timer runs out, no leaks. No salt blocking. Draw cycle works fine. Fills until floater stops it. Mine probably has some problem in the mechanical parts. Watco pro 2P100MPREM Std efficiency just over 3 years old. Metered softener.
Either a problem with the circuit board or piston.

Hi Gary there is a blue light that keeps flashing on the front of my panel door. How can I shut it off. Also I've put 2 bags of salt and its telling me I have 2% full. Looking in the salt tank its 3/4 full. What's up?
Check your manual, you likley need to tell it how muivch salt you added. Sorry, I haven't had any experience with the flashing blue light.

No they cannot. These systems are very trouble free.

Yes, yiou need to add 3-5 gallons of water depending on the size of your water softener.
How do I relieve the pressure before removing and fittings? In bypass mode, the system will not regenerate. This system uses an older Fleck valve.
In bypass mode it will not regenerate but it will release the pressure if you put it into bypass mode and then regenerate.

I used a rust out cleaner in my water boss a few days later the brine tank was full of water. Doesn’t seem to be filling during a regeneration but rather it happens randomly in between them. Any ideas? Also my softener won’t regenerate when in bypass mode only in service mode. I notice u regenerate a lot in bypass mode.
If is fills between regenerations water is leaking past the piston. Water softenmer can only regenerate while in service.
I need help please. I have a whirlpool.... w softener . The low salt or recharge light is continually blinking ... Its a little low on salt but it has been lower many times b4 .
My elec was out last week ...that may have something to do with it . Anyways it want respond when I push any button . I can't even set my time . Can you please help?
Sounds like the circuit board may have been damaged by a power surge. Try unplugging it in, waiting a few minutes and plugging it back in to see if it resets. I have 2 questions #1- I'm looking for that overflow valve that goes in one of the holes on the brine tank but I can't find it in your e-store, what would be the correct term? #2- Also looking at the float assembly (have it in my cart) just wondering if it will fit my brine well it is rectangular not round like un your video and much narrower (I have a yellowish/beige brine tank if that helps... Now I'm wondering if I should just order a replacement tank and if the tank comes with a float? Oops guess that was 3 questions. LOL
I will add that in my brine tank there's the gaping hole where the overflow should be and in the well there is a rod with a float at the bottom but the line is going into the 90 elbow attached to the rod nothing else there, not sure if that's how it's meant to be maybe in ancient models? or if they (old owners) just jerry rigged it like that, no matter it overflows and floods my basement all the time the only it goes down is when I bail the water out. So This is why I'm wondering maybe instead of ordering a couple parts I'd be better with just the new tank?

Curious, I did a
Manual regeneration cycle and added some powdered iron out product to help clean the system. So before I ran the cycle, the tank was about a third full of salt and had a few inches of water on top of it. I noticed when I ran the region cycle all that liquid was gone and then I checked a few hours later, and the liquid was back again. Is this normal

I have standing water inside the water softener about half full.. When I un-bypass the water softener, it leaks out the bypass valve. Does the bypass valve need replacing?? I will clean out the water and salt tomorrow. I tried the regeneration process, but I don't hear any humming from the motor, but it does complete in a couple hours.
When the water softener is in service, (not bypassed) water shoukld flow through the bypass. Not sure what you mean by "it leaks out the bypass valve"

I’ve got an old Culligan in a second home with high iron content that wasn’t recycling. I put it in regeneration, water and unit wouldn’t stop running. Turned large dial by regen switch and water started going in but now won’t drain. Have stirred and punched and scraped bottom with broom handle. I know it’s old but I really think it’s the timer. Can’t find anything on how to set dials. Instructions for timer are on unit but regeneration dial has no instructions. Help!

If you have too much water in your brine tank and the float is at the top of the tube, can you even put it through a cycle? When the float is at the top of the brine well, wouldn’t it be telling the softener not to go into a regen? Guess my question is, do you have to remove some water from the tank before putting it into the regen?
Great question. The valve does not receive any information from the float, so no, you don't need to remove any of the water.
I started having issues with my brine tank filling all the way up until the overflow level stops it. I just noticed that my dlfc is missing according to the drawings. It's possible I removed the drain fitting and the dlfc popped out without me noticing. Would missing the dlfc cause this issue?
Yes, it definitely would.

I have 2 piece culligan gold 9” water softener now i have a problem with that and problem is whenever i turn water supply on it just directly send it to drain and then i bypass the water supply and turn regeneration brine tank has more water as compare to before regenerating
So i check brine tank its full clear i check filter its ok i check drain pipe its working well
But i didn’t figured out what the problem is if you understand can you please tell me what is the problem and how can i solve that please
It sounds like it stuck in the backwash cycle. Likely needs to be rebuilt.

My bride tank was full the other day. I drained it out. now it will not regenerate even manually.
update somehow I got it to start regeneration but after about 10 minutes it went silent. The timer is still counting down though.. where do I go from here?

Noticed alot of water in brine tank, almost full.Tried to regenerate .Very slow drop in brine tank. Still to much water half full, I'll check tomorrow to see if it rises again...

1 cup iron out in a half gallon of cold water, mix well and dump into your float tube, then do a regeneration.
I have an older camshaft water softener I don't think it's revolving properly there's water building in the brine tank any help?

@@GarytheWaterGuy The problem I found out was that tabs go in the center there's a small pilot hole on that but I'm still getting water backing up in the brime tank and it is clear the outlet in the back and I drained the brime tank itself
Can I turn the 1 piece tank on its side to clean tank out?
I wouldn't, they tend to break the top plate. If you are very carfull and tip it on to it's back it might work. But again, I wouldn't.
I have salted water coming in the bathroom when is in cycle. How to fix it?
When your water softener is regenerating, you will have salted water everywhere. Just change the regeneration time to sometime when no one uses the water.
Can I put palettes salt on top of cristal ?
Yes, but only a little at a time.

What do I do if my screen on my water softener does not turn on do I replace it ?

I cleaned the (brine tank, floater, injector, etc) I see all the cycles go as expected order. Also the water in the brine tank is at a good level. I removed some water from the Brine tank and Idid regeneration, then water went back to the same good level, that means the water went to the tank and the floater stopped water at good level. I still have the feeling that the water sucking process is notworking. I don't know how to prove that. But I notice that salt level is not getting lower, that means water is saturated with salt because the floateris locked because water level is the same because no water goes from the brine to the resin. Any other steps I can do to resolve the issue? Do you provide service at Richmond Hill, Ontario? Or recommend technician to help with that?
The valve might need to be rebuilt. Sorry I don't know anyone that I recommend in your area.

How is the regen done if we don't have that fancy button to press? Mine has the dial🤷♂
Depends on the brand but usually you just turn the dial slowly clockwise and when you start to hear water running let go and it will take it from there.

Water is not dropping during the brine portion of the regen cycle?
I have cleaned the injector and the brine line flow control module. During the brine dn cycle the flow to the drain seems to be reduced in volume and water is being added to the tank. Does it make sense to replace the drain flow module?

During brine/rinse cycle the volume of the water going to the drain will be reduced, and during the refill cycle the water softener add water back in to the brine tank. By your description it sounds like your water softener is operating correctly

Check the settings in your water softener and make sure nothing in the house is leaking or running like a toilet.
First I had no water coming in. Now the brine tank is full. It wont drain when it regenerates. Ughhh

I’ve cleaned the injectors and troubleshooted most (except for the piston) it is a fairly new system.
The water level creeps up over time- but there is no leak! It seems like each time it refills it gets a little higher?
It’s a novo 2 part 485HE I also noticed the too (emergency float?) was at a high level and have adjusted this. I had this machine serviced late last winter. I hope you can help!
Does the water level keep rising after the regeneration every day more water? If so water is leaking past the pistons and the seal pack needs replacement
No, I followed all the troubleshooting steps (which I am so thankful for!!!) left the salt low, and marked the line. 2 days later the water was still good. I have “iron friendly” injectors. That seemed to be clear. Though the screen could have been the culprit. I have changed the filter at the well, as well.
Is this maintainace needed every couple months? Or is there something that I’m missing!

My brine tank isn't filling, we have to put water in it. The brine is going in, but no water filling.
I would check the settings, or make sure the brine line flow control isn’t blocked

@@GarytheWaterGuy Oh yes, we have had it for years. I rebuilt the head, and tried to turn down the amount of salt it used, it was set for 18 lb per refresh. Then it wasn't filling the tank. So I just put it back to 18lb, we will see what happens. It is old I probably ought to get a new upflow model.

that is an option but some of these fixes are pretty easy to do and could save you the cost and hassel.
The problem is you bought a water boss product
Actually any water softener will end up with too much water in the brine tank if not maintained and serviced.
