      @@AlienfromAndromeda. I like you too! And yes, I'm pretty sure I remember at least one person getting back to me after a decade. I tutor people in math and science and visit educational videos on UA-cam fairly regularly. I think one of the 10+ year replies was on an ultrasound video, but I can't quite remember now.

    7:48 It's always good to remember that the chain has to go through the double-bond, even if you could make a longer chain elsewhere. Thanks for the explanation and all of the examples!

    At 8:22 couldn't you have started at the very left with 1 and counted 3 as the double bond, making the longest strand 8?

      No, you have to include both the carbons involved in the double bond, in the configuration you suggested only one of the carbons involved in the double bond is considered. @@sanyasarin

      the double bond has to be included in the longest chain. It means the WHOLE bond, not just a part of it

    8:10 why is the chain only 7? You can start counting on the left most carbon to make it 8.

      @@specialgamer6852 looking back now, I think its because he stated that the double bond should be the lowest no. The double bond's position takes precedence when determining the name. Since you can have the double bond on Carbon 1 with a 7-carbon chain, you must use that option because it gives the double bond the lowest possible number.

    I've been trying to understand priority groups that were introduced in our homework mind you not in actual class and I was so confused trying to read about it.     For the example at 8:33, isn't the priority to find the longest chain? As such, shouldn't the left ethyl group be part of the chain, and the double-bond be called a 2 methyl groups?

    8:10 a little doubt... If we count on the left side including the double bond it becomes 8 which means octene and u said that we should give priority to that double bond but why?

      It’s in IUPAC rules that the highest priority substituent must be included in the longest chain

    8:13 Doesn't the longest chain contain 8 carbons if you start from the leftmost one and go down the ethyl group?

      Right. At first I'm like oh easy, double bonds means end everything with ene ... then came the addition of other molecules being attached which made it even more confusing as well as multiple double bonds turning it into diene, triene, etc and having to put it all in alphabetical order 😭
