When someone asks to borrow money my standard reply for years has been "I can't loan money. My budget will not allow it. Please don't ask again." It is no one else's business what my budget it. If they are persistent I tilt my head slightly to one side and just stare at them. Works every time. I enjoy keeping folks guessing (especially some previous nosey neighbors) if I have lost my mind.
I never lend people money. If it's someone I care about, I will give what I can afford -- but never lend. It's the quickest way to end a nice relationship. It's safe to say that threatening phone calls are always lies. Your bank doesn't call, nor does Medicare, nor does the IRS, Amazon, etc. They simply don't do business on the phone. The reason I can't take on projects is that "I still have too many family responsibilities."
