Happy to provide the entertainment! I had an Andrew Will Champoux 15 or 16 last year, and it was right in my hedge fund wheelhouse. Fruity but classy, oak beautifully integrated. Sort of what you wish Caymus would taste like. I keep trying to talk myself into another, but $65 (or whatever I paid for it) is a little steep. Then again, add up all my $30 disappointments and it ends up being a bargain.

Hey Dr. Matthew, big fan of your videos.. Finding real enjoyment in your ability to approach the wines in the Gary V inspired style of "straight to the business" with your love for the wines and your consumer wine buyer focus being clear. Forgive me for not diving too deep into your older content to find the answer to the following question: You mention in this video that your prefer pure grenache, more delicate style of CDP--I'm a grenache lover, all about those chewy rhubarb and and strawberry notes that I find in some great Cali grenache, the violets, plum, purple fruit notes in some priorat wines... wondering if you don't mind steering me towards some of your fav Grenache-heavy CDP's in the under $100 range that I could find in New England market. All best, keep up the good content!
p.s. maybe aussie grenache tasting soon?

I like Dunnuck; have since the Rhone Report which was free at least at one point. The scores may be a touch high, but, maybe it’s just me, even Galloni’s scores seem to have crept up recently (except for some Williams Selyem Chardonnays I bought which he slammed pretty hard - guess I’ll find out when I open one).

Hi Matthew. First time commenter but I've been a subscriber for a while and really like your content. It's an interesting question whether Jeb rates higher than others and what that means. It's one I've definitely talked about before with other wine friends. My take is that he definitely does rate higher than others in general but I think the context is the most important thing. I think scores from any reviewer on their own are meaningless. But if you get to know a reviewer and how they score then you start getting more information out of both the scores and tasting notes of that reviewer. Jeb tends to focus on areas I like and I think our tastes are similar so I've been following him for a while and so I've gotten a feel for how to calibrate his scores and notes compared to Vinous compared to Wine Spectator, which are all different. (And when there are different reviewers at a publication I think you need to distinguish between reviewers too because they have different tastes.) Also worth noting, I think Jeb's range is a little different for red and white wines too. But all that said, I really like Jeb reviews and he is usually the first review I go to for wines in his areas. I just take them with a grain of salt.

An interesting video. I am not that familiar with Jeb Dunnuck's reviews or ratings, tbh. I have mixed views about his ratings as someone who advocates and highlights the Rhone should be appreciated. But at the same time so many of these wines are in the 100-150 US$ range, which is beyond the reach of most wine consumers. Thanks again for pointing us towards where the values can be found.
Washington is one of the most exciting US wine regions imho, as they are doing things differently than California. About 5 or 6 years ago we had a friend there who would get some bottles for us via a mutual friend here. Alas, that didn't last for long, but they did impress me as being more balanced, fresher and without the heavy oak and extraction from some other U.S. wine regions. There are some Washington wines available here at Costco or other retailers, less expensive than Napa or other prestigious California AVAs.
P.S. Congratulations on reaching 10k subscribers! And when is the Etna video going to drop?

Nice list. Obviously Jeb has his niche, and in that world I think he does a pretty good job. However, it's my understanding that he doesn't taste the review wines blind, which I wish he did and believe should be the standard. To be fair to Jeb, it's probably a lot harder to review blind when he's a smaller operation and probably doing a lot of the reviews while visiting wineries. Overall though I think hes one of the best in the business, and I love the way he's built his business from the ground up.

    • @drmatthewhorkey

  • @ryankeith5139

I don't think he scores too high nor do I think the reviewer is the issue if that is the perception. The issue lies in the general public in what is deemed a necessary point total to be considered a quality wine with the 90 number seeming to be that threshold. Historically, a wine could be 88-89 points and be fantastic but because it didn't hit that perceived point total, many people cast that wine aside. So, not saying this is the case with Jeb but maybe his 92 is someone else's 89. Did he really over rate the number or just give it a number that it deserved for the general public to give the wine its rightful positive attention? Hope this makes sense.... I am not a writer.

Also for as much crap as Suckling gets about inflated scores, just mention the word "Rhone" around Jeb and he's pulling out his 95 point stamp. Good video though, it is fun to look around at the various top 100 lists to dissect what's getting attention in the enormous world of wine. And to see what was making top 100 lists from years past, how peoples taste changes etc.

Dunnick scores a few points high, and his Drinking Windows are too long. IMO, the drinking window should stop at its Peak, not as it's fading to 79 points.
Example: Chateauneuf drinking window is 5-15 years. Some may last to 25, but why do you want to say, "Geez at 10 years, this was great. Now at 20, I wish I opened this 5 years ago."?
