🎥 Wine Spectator Top Ten Wines of 2022 REACTION: ua-cam.com/video/4g2pnYpLo6I/v-deo.html
Matthew, I love the content you produce. I am a beverage director at a country club in PA and I love checking out your channel for new wines I may not have thought of sharing with my cliental
Thank you so much. You have to buy from the state monopoly right??
@@drmatthewhorkey Yes everything is done through the state owned stores and each store has a different inventory meaning you sometimes have to drive to multiple to get everything I need. I can also order stuff from distributors who offer wines at more so of a wholesale price since PA gives a 10% discount then charges 6%tax
Riesling is an insane grape varietal. Producing wines from many different ranges and styles. Also some of the most age worthy white wines, as well as the most intense and powerful.
The fact that it is so under appreciated blows my mind.
People, go buy some reislings. They make them all around the world. My favorites come from Austria!
I find it hard to believe that casual wine drinkers will come around to it. In the USA, somms have been pushing for years but to no avail... The high acidity is just a bit much for most wine drinkers. Good for people like us though as the prices are flat-out bargains
@@drmatthewhorkey Peter Lauer makes some great ones
Becoming a huge fan of yours, glad to see your popularity growing! Love your style, content and delivery. Next year will be a breakthrough year, I can guarantee it! #100k+
Woww thank you as I put so much into this channel that goes unseen… Here’s to 100k in 2023!! 🤞🏼
Love this new reaction video. Actually the "Taurasi Riserva 2017" from Mastroberardino is only 20 dollars at the moment here in Campania, talk about value for money! You should do a reaction about James Suckling's top 100 as well!
That is RIDICULOUS value for money!!! About JS… 😬
So interesting to compare! Definitely a few common wines. Cheers!
Yeah I cracked up seeing your list.
That Zuccardi Concreto! I'm not sure about the vintage, but I tasted one this year and blew me away. Stunning, exciting wine!
I am a BIG fan too!
Your lower cost alternative wine recommendations of higher cost wines is great!
Thanks, I try to keep that in mind but some can slip my mind as I want these reaction videos to be spontaneous and sometimes it’s hard to pull them out of thin air on the spot 😂🤣
@@drmatthewhorkey ypu are doing just great, no worries 😉
Great video as always!! Would love to see some travel vlogs from you for Riesling in Germany ;)
Mosel VLOG coming soon ;)
Great energy doc... Wow that Oakville is expensive, I want to try it!!!
Thanks a lot… happy hunting as it’s sure to be sold out around the country now 😬
Some iconic wines there and some I'm not familiar with. Great video as always.
Thanks, I agree that the top 100 list is always more exciting to me.
We work at the winery that got number 16 from Paso Robles (the Beautiful Earth Red) and were totally looking forward to your review. If you ever catch yourself in Paso Robles definitely stop by!
Congrats! Drop me an email, I’m open to hearing more about your wines and project: exoticwinetravel@gmail.com
So glad to see Bosc 16 in there, great wine!
Agreed! I love it
Hi Matthew, loved the video! Was really suprised seeing the Goru verde in this year's top 100, I work at a wine store where we sold the Goru verde (and still sell the goru tinto and blanco). The Goru Verde is 100 percent Monastrell, and I think the wine is aged only 3 months in oak, whilst the Goru tinto that you tasted in your other video has a bit more oak aging and is a blend of Monastrell Syrah and CS, they are really different so I would not count them as the same wine!
Hey thanks for clearing this up! These reaction videos are spontaneous so I had to pull that off the top of my head, I later realized that they are different wines. How are they selling?
@@drmatthewhorkey As you said in your previous video, the tinto appeals to a lot of people I think. It's bold, fruit forward, not a difficult wine to understand, it's rather a wine that is enjoyable for stand alone drinking with enough complexity that it stays interesting. It's a very popular wine and I can see why! The goru verde was kind of the same story, but with more peppery notes, sold really well too, enjoyed it more because the varietal tones of the Monastrell grape were more opulant.
Really enjoyed this overview of well rated wines, glad the price points were mentioned. Not everyone has unlimited wine budgets! We still want to shop with out breaking the budget.
Thanks! We all want the best value for money.
I appreciated your sweet spot comment 25-50 price range, I am of the same mind.
I prefer this reaction even to the top 10 video. Very strong content
Wow really??? Could you please let me know what you like about it better? It helps for future videos.
@@drmatthewhorkey It was you reacting to a list rather than a video. The WS top 10 video by WS itself was not very entertaining so it kind brought down your video a bit when you played it. This one the whole video was your show so you could make it more entertaining in terms of pacing, editing etc. Also the wines in the top 100 are more interesting as there is more variety and potential for hidden gems and seeing you pick out the meaningful ones is genuinely helpful.
Thanks for taking the time to type that out
I also loved the R Kabinet! Gooooood stuff, it's one of my Thanksgiving wines this year (Plus Weiss old vines Riesling). And I found some other CDR Red with a screwcap for the trifecta of juicy and friendly wines to share ^_^
You know your wine!!! Kabinett Rieslings are perfect for Thanksgiving.
Skipped over that Hermann J Weimer Riesling from FLX.. you should do some finger lakes wines especially HJW… they are producing outstanding stuff
There’s a lot of Riesling content coming up
Great video Matthew ... I love dry Riesling, sweet Riesling is like lemonade 🤮
That’s what I love about them… adult lemonade
I'm glad you gave the Pinot grigio a shout... I know PG has a reputation as either bad or boring, but like you said when you have a *really* good bottle it's eye opening.
Totally agree! You might like this… Should YOU pay more for Pinot Grigio???
ua-cam.com/video/IRDLtzvaWrQ/v-deo.html
I agree that this is a much more representative list than the top 10 was. Interesting to see that dry Tokaij on there, although I think a Tokaij aszu might have been more appropriate. Good to see a bunch of Pinots make the list, a big omission from the top 10, although still pretty US heavy on the pinot producers. Might have liked to see a Domaine Nico Pinot (my go to Burgandy substitute) or something similar on there. Pretty fun list though. Great video, I've got some new wines to try!
Nicee, I’m not familiar with Domain Nico, can you tell me more?
@@drmatthewhorkey Sure, its kind of an unusual producer. Argentinian Valle de Uco Pinot from very high elevation. Each wine sourced from an individual parcel. I just find it to be very Burgundian. A little expensive, but compared to Premier Cru Burgandy its a steal at around $50 or $60. Just something a little different, which to me is the most exciting thing about wine.
I just looked it up, owned by Catena family. I hope to taste it soon and thanks for bringing it to my attention.
@@drmatthewhorkey Their "Histoire D'A" wine is the one to try imo. Thanks again for all your work!
You should do a review of James Sucklings top 100 list too!!
😬😉
Nice selection, I just wished WINE SPECTATOR would also help smaller houses and producers.... maybe they could do a TOP 100 discoveries ?
The problem is, it seems like a lot of the wines need to be imported and have decent distribution...
Just curious, what regions are on those maps in the background?
Chianti Classico, Montefalco, and Austria/Hungary
@@drmatthewhorkey very nice! Keep up the awesome videos man, love your content❤️
Interesting to compare your picks with those of Attorney somm. A few common choices: St Joseph, Yarra PN and Kabinett spring to mind.
Wine and tastes are so individual that I don't usually take much notice of lists, except for a bit of fun.
One thing I notice in many US based wine videos is the ridiculously high price of wine there, compared with here in the UK.
Fortunately, I have already purchased most of the wines for laying down that I will need, except for the odd half case of white. I can now confine myself to drinking those and buying the occasional bottle of top wine as a treat.
US wine pricing can be tricky as they can be almost double retail than Europe but in some cases, can be less!! It’s also a balance factoring in on-premise sales as restaurant markups in the USA can get out of control… that is a good call by you, unfortunately for us wine nerds, buying wine can be addictive!
@@drmatthewhorkey Restaurant pricing of wines is ridiculous here too, so I either pick from the cheaper end or ask about corkage. It makes it worse knowing the usual retail price of most wines on the list.
I know that buying wine is addictive: I share your addiction. However, I would hate to be on my death bed with 500 bottles of undrunk excellent wine in the cellar. My wife can't drink alcohol for health reasons (it makes her very ill) so they would all go to auction if she outlives me.
One thing I forgot to mention - I too enjoy Hungarian dry furmint. Our local supermarket stocks one at £12.50, which is pretty good.
BTW, thanks for all the effort you and your team puts into these videos; it is much appreciated.
Thanks a lot… Unfortunately no team… I do EVERYTHING solo - hope to change that when the channel blows up
@@drmatthewhorkey Wow! Kudos. I thought there was a chap called Fabien who worked with you.
He was in the travel VLOG videos about France… good guy
Another wine on that list the san felice Chianty classico is interssting. But the price suprices me. I have not had the ordinarry Chianti classico but i have several wines from.them above that.Chianti classico il grigio riserva and gran selectione. The riserva i got at 10$ and gran selectione at 17$ . Both 2016 and both on sale. I also have the 2016 Vigorello at 15$ and 2015 brunello de moltachino at 22$. All i bought on sale in a supermarket who are the danish importers.
Wowwwwwzaaasssas that is a helluva price
Another one which price suprices me is the produtorri. I bought the 2013 Montefico here in Denmark at 38$. I have 8 bottles left. It has rissen in prica since that. But still quite a bit cheaper here in Denmark.
That’s a great buy! Prices can vary state to state in the USA and publications often quote on the high side
@@drmatthewhorkey Okay. Good to hear. Sometimes its the other way around. I hear about better prices in US than here for some wines. I dont know why there sometimes are so.much difference
Yes, sometimes that is the case… the three tier system in the USA makes it difficult… auction sites and sales offer great value at times
@@drmatthewhorkey yes several years ago i bought wines at auction. Somtimes you could get lucky. But i havent done that for a long time.
I just recently bought 4 bottles of Giant steps applejack vineyard 2021 at a really good price. I only paid 30$ pr bottle for it. It was on sale. Awesome vine. It reminded me of a Chambolle Musigny top premier or grand cru from an outstanding producer.Except if it came from.Burgundy the price would probably be 10 times higher. A great buy.
Wowweeee… I like it too a lot. That is a wonderful price. Did u save any??
@@drmatthewhorkey i bought 4 bottles and tasted on. So 3 left.
😬😮
Thanks
Thanks for stopping by
@@drmatthewhorkey
Appreciate your straight forward reviews!
Well. got the Fontafredda in my local supermarket for 20 usd... never bought it before, since i hate low quality Barolo.. but picked up 2 bottels, just to try.. might be pure win :)
Niceee, at that price it’s honestly a no brainer…
@@drmatthewhorkey well, thanks. :) just had too much really bad supermarked Barolo, to take chances :)
Hahahha yes I know there’s lot of it out there (bad bulk Barolo). I was really pleased when I had this for 20 euros… Honestly, with the way Barolo prices have skyrocketed, $50 isn’t a terrible price either
Blanc de blanc, no pinot. Correct?
Correct!! Blanc de Blancs = White wine made from white grapes
Yes to Goru. No to $250 cabs that are full-frontal fruit with or without tannin.
hahahahahhah I agree...
Jumps straight over the NZ wine at #13 😢 , why you gotta hate on the Kiwi’s man? You sick of Sav?😂
Hahahha I thought about shouting it out for you… Don’t worry, there’s plenty of Kiwi wine coming up on the channel ;)
Now I know why you like Vinous Media recommendations.
Giant Steps Chardonnay(Not Pinot Noir). I thought is was Very light. 91 pts. No bad flavors, but I'd rather have El Enemigo for $20. Same flavor profile(LIGHT Wht Burg.), can age 5-7 years.
JL Chave, both White & Red Hermitage. 1969(great) White in about 1993(Almonds & hazelnut smell & flavor) 96-97 points. 1990 Red in ~2002(Elegant, but complex flavors). 100 pts.
Both spectacular wines. Like pornography, I can't define it but I Know it when I see it!
Certain wines right??? They just have that special something, like Chave Hermitage. Just curious to why you said I like Vinous?? I do though - well at least before that article dropped about them a month ago
@@drmatthewhorkey--I responded to an old video recently(11 months ago, "Is this RED WINE great just because it got 95 points?" About Beaujolais-Morgon). You said to "Beaune Head" that you like VM. I missed your VM article. I'll search for it.
Ahhhhhh ic!!! This was the eye popping article www.everydaydrinking.com/p/wine-media-is-broken-a-case-study
@@drmatthewhorkey--Thanks for that. I couldn't find it in you videos. It took me a while to read it.
I thought that Parker was honest, but when he sent someone to review Aussie wines(Dr. Stuart Somebody??), he destroyed the upscale Aussie market in the USA. Not Grange or Hill of Grace. Obvious Pay for Play. I don't know the Advocate's new critics.
A large part of that article was on Chinon. I've tasted young & 10-15 year-old Chinon, and disliked all of them. My favorite region in Bordeaux is St Emilion. I think Pride Mtn Vineyards(Spring Mtn, Napa) makes the best Cab Franc in the USA. Probably not your style(dark fruit, fine elegant, not rustic tannins). Chinon is lean, green & acidic with astringent tannins(sounds lovely, right?). Love Loire Whites.
On that Beaujolais video, I complained about Galloni's review of Beckman's Syrah. It tasted like Chinon! I don't like Upstate New York Reds for the same reason(whites are nice: 87-91+ points)
I love hearing you speak german 😂😊
hahahaha I know I know.... Super tough for me...😂
@@drmatthewhorkey no but this was a great video for new ideas from around the world! Can’t wait to get my hands on some of them!
Funny thing is that I love German wines but the language is SOOOOO tough for me hahahhah
First Riesling at about #30?? 🤨🙄
Oh, well....Herman Wiemer WR made the list, at least.
We should be happy that Rieslings don’t get all the big press. 🤣😂
@@drmatthewhorkey I see your point! 😄
🤪
Rieslings are a hard sell to a lot of people, the high acid isn’t too everyone’s liking. Most people don’t want to feel like they are sucking on a lemon…
@@drmatthewhorkey--It seems that women don't like off-dry or dessert wines, because after their jugs of Almaden French Colombard & Mtn Chablis days, they don't allow themselves to like sweet wines anymore.
