Blind Tasting CABERNET FRANC…

- Cabernet Franc is often considered to be just a blending grape but it can make GREAT red wine on its own. Cabernet Franc is also one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon. Join me on a blind tasting of wines from the Loire and around the world.

What a fantastic video! ❤🍷I love that your top 4 were each from a different region. That just proves how exciting Cabernet Franc can be. So much to discover in the Loire and beyond. Thank you for the opportunity to chime in on my favourite variety, and thank you as well for the kind mention and support. I'm confident you'll get 100% on the quiz before you know it! 😉
Hahahah thanks for being a part of it... I think a 100% score is like the chase of a 5 minute mile for me hahaha
Love cab franc too! Really good editing , with the flashbacks! Helps a lot with the understanding and helps with the storytelling ! Cheers !
Ahhh thanks! I try
Happy to see cab franc featured! I have enjoyed several from Canada and would love to try more.
I hope you taste more!!
Please don’t promote cab franc. Keep it affordable and relatively under the radar, like Riesling. ;-). There are some interesting francs, with a nod to the Loire, coming out of Long Island. Channing Daughters is one example. There are others. How about a Blaufrankisch vid?
Already have done one!! ua-cam.com/video/qLPDEaVxEeM/v-deo.html
I used to say just like you: keep it a secret! 😄But I have got the impression that wine writers and wine critics have been promoting cabernet franc for decades without being able to put the grape into the limelight, so I think we are pretty safe.
Love the passion in this one, thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Wow Matt, it was great to see which wine won! :)
Yes I was SHOCKED!
I lived in Nantes for 6 years. The graphite notes on the SN de bourgeuil brought me back some good (tasting) memories.
Great video
Merci!!! Wow that comment means a lot to me for some reason
Thanks for this video, great tasting!
Merci! Cab Franc for the win!!!
Really enjoyed this video - thank you!
Thank you
Great video Matthew! Cabernet Franc is under appreciated for sure. Always loved them. I'm a fan of Titus and Chinon. I imported Olga Raffault decades ago. Thanks for the tip on the Cab Franc Chronicles as well!
Ahhhh thanks! It is a grape that I think will gather steam in the coming years. A lot of producers on the right bank in Bordeaux are planting more of it. Ahhhh you are an importer??
@@drmatthewhorkey No, I ran a small specialty import distributor decades ago. Now, like you, I am endeavoring to be a writer and educator among other things. It will be interesting to see how much more Cabernet Franc gains in encepagement on the right bank.
wow. epic episode!
Thanks!
Argentinian Cab Franc is amazing. I caught up to it after listening to an interview of a british lady who writes the south american wine guide. Then it took me to a couple of amazing Loire wines. Gotta love Cabernet Franc.
Ahhh good ole Amanda Barnes… she js brilliant!
Such a fun tasting! You’ve got me running to my local wine shop looking for Hungarian cab francs!
I hope you can find some!
If you live in EU, we can ship some to you. We have biodynamic, natural ones and @Dr.MatthewHorkey can tell you about our style and quality :)
cab franc is one of the few successes here in virginia. although I believe that's starting to change. recently enjoyed a surprisingly good claret from barboursville vinyards.
I do like the Barboursville version and the one from Early Mountain as well. Octagon and RdV’s wines are lovely too!
@@drmatthewhorkey RdV on the list! Their mgr just got his MW this year.
Thanks for this video and for blending in some of our wines too! Hope to meet you again soon! We have a lot of new wines for you to taste :) F.e. a white PétNat out of Cabernet Franc, we call it Blanc de Franc :) Or our 2018th vintage without sulfur, which is said to be amazing (a big amount went to Sweden already :) Kind regards, Susann and Ralf
Ahhhh nice!! I hope you are well and things are going smoothly over there!
@@drmatthewhorkey Thanks a lot, hope you are fine too, only good news here :)
Hungarian Cab Franc sounds interesting. I love this grape and drink a lot of it from Orbitello but I´ve recently tried ever more from Austria with similar flavours to your tasting notes on the winning wine. I´m drinking ever more wines like this and I´m really starting to love them!
Ahhh enjoy as it’s a fantastic variety!
I appreciate your vocabulary. I can almost taste the wines as you describe them.
That means a lot to me. Thanks
Italian cab francs are 🔥, so savory and delicious
They can be good!
great episode.
Thanks!
The great wine journey. I started off desperately looking for fruit forward wines, trying to parse through the wines not showing anything or not balanced. Then when I settled into wines displaying clear fruit character, I became a secondary nut. I now search for more rare flavours. Truffle I really like to find. Leather...but also capsicum. It's such a pleasure to find these exotic aromas in wines.
Ahhh that’s a very common take, totally agree. Cab Franc offers all of this thankfully!!
good info, tasting notes, fun reveal, not too long, had much fun watching this!
..once again, my wine todo gets a new entry "Zuccardi Poligonos cab franc"
Ahhhh niceeee it’s a good wine!
Big fan of Cab Frank too. For my palate it beats Cab Sauv every time.😻
Came here to write the very same thing!
I’m a big Cab Franc fan too obviously
Cab Franc is actually the king of red wines besides being the founder grape. The Chinon cab francs are amazing.
All of Loire is stellar to me and I’ll be there in a few weeks.
Great video. Love your channel, man! Why don’t you have more subs? Big fan of Titus being a SF boy. Hey what camera are you using for your videos they look great! Keep rocking the wine vids. Oh ya, nice shout out to Gary V, what a UA-cam wine tasting legend. Thanks again.
Ahhhhh thanks! I use a pair of Canons M50 and G7x MII… GV is a legend snd thanks for the support
I love L'Ecole! Thanks to PA for putting the merlot, cab sav, chard, syrah, and two savblanc/semillon blends half off!
Ohhhh wow, they are at great prices then
Nice video! Looking forward to trying some cabernet francs which are not from the Loire for a change. 🙂
I think your scoring in general is a little high. At least for me, many of the Loire cab francs I drink I would score in the 86-89 range: they are quite straight-forward, delicious when young, full marks for terroir but not very complex. Considering the price point, I think I would score most of the Loire wines in your sample the same way. And don't get me wrong: the wines in this range are probably the ones I enjoy *drinking* the most, as opposed to the more complex 90+ points bottles which are not everyday wine and which require more "effort", so to speak.
Totally get it.. I did say up front I might be a touch high because like Sangiovese, I love Cab Franc
I love Domaine de la Butte, Jacky Blot's Cabernet Franc wines in Bourgueil. Truly exceptional.
Sadly, Jacky passed away some days ago.
Ohhh RIP
Excellent vid, so happy that someone is taking my fave red grape seriously. What was the stew @12:18? Did you say lamprey stew?
Yes you are right! Thst stew is a specialty in the Loire
Heumann La Trinita is also amazing Cab Franc wine...I'm off to Budapest soon so will pop in to Taste Hungary and get some of the Franom as have never tried it.
I tried to get a Heumann for this vidro but it was out of stock! Enjoy Taste Hungary, I love them!
I had a cab franc from Israel and it is easily in my top 5 all time wines
Niceee
I'm very happy to see an Eger CF come out on top. Congratulations, Hungary. I haven't heard of this producer yet, but I will seek them out. CF is so much cooler, mature, and intriguing than CS.
I don't know who said that CS is the "king of red grapes" It would be hard to say just one, but CF is certainly a very important one.
I love good Cabernet Franc, leaning more towards the earthier and leaner Loire style. Though Hungary seems a mid point between the Loire and some of the riper regions e.g. Bolgheri, Napa. Great video, keep them coming ooooob
That is a great way to talk about Hungary although there are all types of Cabernet Franc being made there. From riper and Napa esque to those that resemble Loire.
wow!! yeah i could just drink loire valley wine for the rest of my life... it's also a very long valley .. and the most historical valley in france and medieval europe. .. i will have to branch out on the cab franc, to hungary
You’ll like Sunday’s video :)
Have to love the price quality ratio for Loire Cab Francs. 🇫🇷🇫🇷
The aroma always reminds me of Paris as it is so popular there.
Yes Perez has such a great selection of Loire Cabernet franc!
@@drmatthewhorkey
When you mentioned Weisskopf I recalled I had some of his Montlouis Sur Loire Chenin from his Le Clos vineyard. 2020. Needs a lot of time.
I’d say he is an Alsatian transplant:)
well this made me want to go pick up a cab franc lol.
I also really like the graphite taste and some of these wines seem to have it in spades
Ahhh nice, good thing is that CF doesn’t break the bank!
everytime you do these tastings i photograph the whole group together and try to find them .the titus is defintely the most ubiquitous
Niceee there’s a big tasting video coming today!
Also, in all videos there is a list of wines in the description box
You should try the 'Paleo' bij Le Macchiole. The best Italian Cabernet Franc I had.
Good wine indeed!
Great video, but can’t believe you did not include a Cab Franc from Niagara. Good example would be Bella Terra Estate Cabernet Franc. Try them! 😁
Not easy to get Canadian wines outside the country
I was quite surprised after having shown Allison from the CabFrancChronicles that you completely ignored any of the Cabernet Francs from Niagara. Both the US and Canadian regions of Niagara make Cabernet Francs that can challenge any in the world.
Very difficult to get the high quality Canadian wines outside the country
I really like California cab francs, intense wine.
They can be!
Weekly cab franc quiz, lol how niche!.
Very much so and difficult to boot!
Hey Doc. Have u tried PUR from Chateau Rocher Corbin. A great 100% CF
Yes!
Until domestic producers make more affordable and quality cab franc, I don’t think this wine will take off in the U.S.
Also, I’m not surprised that Zuccardi would produce a good cab franc. That is an excellent vintner. I’ve laid down a case of one of their premier Malbecs.
Niceee, you will see a Malbec make an appearance soon
I agree w/Alison- Cab Franc is a sexy grape!😉 🍇
Agreed!
Great video, want to drink more Cab Franc. With 13 wines you might want to consider splitting it up in two videos. Seven wines first video, six second video with a summary of all 13 at the end. As a viewer I got a bit lost among all wines.
I get it but honestly, the more wines I have I think the better it is for me to judge solely on quality since I don’t have an assistant and I know what the wines are before tasting blind.
@@drmatthewhorkey Maybe you could taste them in one session but in a way that you can still edit it into two videos? Just a suggestion though, this is still great, don't get me wrong.
There’s only one… the greatest of all.. clos rougeard !!!
What a great wine!
figeac is 35% franc, 35%,sauvignon, 35 merlot...........its one of my largest selections in my collection!
Ahhhh u have a nice cellar then!
I'm putting Sideways behind me and drinking more franc and dare I say it, merlot.
Yes both grapes are stellar
Can Franc is much easier on my head(aches)!
😂🤣
Cool video but I’d rather you do half the amount of wines in two videos. (Then maybe a third where the top few go head to head.) The descriptions felt rushed. Lots of the same markers-graphite, cherry, wood. I’d rather you get a little more nuanced in your comparisons. Also, very interesting not to hear capsicum/green pepper come up much, as that’s always CF varietal hallmark for me…
Thanks. I have to say though they are not rushed. I edit out non-useful parts and dead spaces where I am concentrating. Otherwise the video would be over an hour long… Capsicum is mentioned during the tasting part, I agree it does come with the territory of CF.
my favorite cab franc is super naice
Which is?

I think you’ll like the producer!
