Jarrod, so awesome to have you back with the band. Your Blue Sky Research work was amazing.. I mean amazing. (I’m a drummer). BSR is an autobiographical album for me. If someone made a movie of my life, the entire album would be the soundtrack from 2005-2008! I loved hard music but your exploration into BSR coincided with me liking more melodic groove metal. I can REALLY hear the Pantera influence in a song like Poem.
Blue Sky Research is a musical masterpiece. I remember purchasing the record in 2005 and putting it in my CD player on a bus ride home. I could not believe how different and soothing nu metal could be. Still listening to the record 20 years later.
I have been a fan for over 20 years and I've literally introduced as many people as I could to Taproot. Their music changed my life. Love them and have driven far and wide to see them since the release of ✂️
Good video, thanks for all the history! Taproot was the first band I ever saw, I was probably 14-15. They opened for Linkin Park at the Showbox in Seattle. I had no idea that night was going to change the course of my life and I would be a total show junkie from that point on. It was a great time! January 26th, 2001!
I’ve been a hardcore fan from the beginning, one of my top 5 favorite artists imo! Love every album and their growth through each one is incredible! Forever Endeavor Taproot!! 🤟🏼🤟🏼
Most people don’t understand what signing with a major label means economically. My buddy signed a major label deal in the 80’s. They receive an advance of $500k. But it’s a loan. Tours and record sales need to pay back the loan before any money sees the band. These guys in the band are lucky to make $100k a year, and yeah some expenses are paid for but it’s a grind. A man can make more money for his family being a HVAC tech or manager at Home Depot. That’s the reality of the biz.
I was 14 when Nu Metal blew up and it was always great. I never understood the hate. Have only recently discovered Taproot so thanks a lot for this! Cheers from Ireland 🇮🇪
Great Work F.A.D !! Loved the timeline breakdown!! This band got me thru some stuff after returning from Iraq back in 2004. We all have battles to fight thru hope we all In a better place but Taproot was my battle buddy getting me through that time!

The one good thing about Victory Records was definitely was their taste in artists during that era, haha Thanks for watching and all the support as always 😇🖤
Great video, thanks! Definitely an underrated band. 'Welcome' is probably my favourite album of theirs. It came out at the tail-end of nu-metal where there were quite a few bands taking a more melodic (but not poppy) approach. I remember listening to Vacant Stare and Five Pointe O a lot around this time too, who also had some great melodic songs

Man, this randomly turned up on my feed to watch. i went into our local record store and randomly picked up "Gift" not long after release and bought on a whim, purely on album cover. i LOVE "I" and "Mirrors Reflection"! imma be honest - i'm a few beers in and will watch this intently tomorrow!
alien ant farm, taproot and linking park was the first concert i ever went to. saw them all play at the electric factory in philadelphia, i think 2001! it was right before linkin park took off. i remember saying to myself that the second band was the best, which happened to be taproot.
Taproot was a favorite of mine for years. I was shocked the first time I heard BSRL and I honestly hated it. Fast-forward 5 years later when I was in my 20s I revisited the album and loved it. I had to get past hoping for another Gift or Welcome and just hope for a good album and be open to change. Couldn't do that as a teenager
Taproot is one of my very favorite bands. I am not shocked at Fred Durst's upset especially if Interscope was his label, however, very unprofessional of him. He sounded like a spoiled brat instead of a fellow musician happy to help them find their way even if it was with a different label. And if Mike didn't want to come back after settling down, thats just fine, but why be upset that everyone else is ready to get back out there? Wish them the best and be happy for them. It's life. Life's direction can change quickly. I think it is fantastic that members of Taproot took time off to take care of themselves, and their families for a while instead of having their lives fall apart while they were thousands of miles away on tours. We are all regular people in this world, some just have talent deserving recognition like Taproot. ❤❤ Very informative and interesting video! 👍

Thanks for making this video. I always loved the song Again and Again. I randomly thought of them and wondered how they've been. I was surprised to see how different Stephen looks, I almost thought they got a new singer. I really wanna know what happened to him? His face got really skinny and he doesn't look well. I don't recognise him at all. It saddens me.
I will forever say that Nu Metal (along with Metalcore) is the best Metal genre. Bands like: Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Deftones, System of a Down and Taproot to name a few are the reason why I defend Nu Metal.
Who else had a 3 cd credit from Columbia House and took a risk on a band and self titled album they never heard of but took that chance because the description mentioned Deftones as a comparable artist?
close for me. i was napstering some tunes and some before gift music from them wound up in m folder. i was addicted instantly, and have been a mega fan ever since
Steve is a genius songwriter and a badass in the studio, but his voice isn’t for everybody… and his live performances were always lacking. His one dimensional growl, his flamboyant vibrato, his childlike lyrics, and his corny compulsion to act out his lyrics on stage are things that I feel have always held them back from the big show.
The deal that was offered to Taproot by Interscope/Flip back in the day doesn't sound like a good one. This is from a 2024 article by THEPRP: Essentially, Taproot were invited to record several songs to earn a potential spot on the Flip roster. Naturally, Taproot would want to put their best foot forward and record their tracks with the most potential. However, as Montague stated in his aforementioned book, the terms of the deal meant that even if Flip rejected the band, Flip would retain ownership of the songs recorded.
The problem with Blue Sky Research and Our Long Road Home was that at the time, they sounded like EVERY other band on the radio. Gift blew up because it sounded unique. It's no coincidence that they fell off when they started chasing the popular sound of the time instead of developing the sound that they created. Not trying to knock them or anything, they seem like good dudes. It's just my analysis based on what I saw and heard at the time.
