You DO NEED an airspeed indicator for legal VFR flight. You might want to review FAR CFR 91.205 YOU (PILOT) are correct, abort the take off. Your passenger is incorrect, you would not continue without an airspeed indicator. Seems rather common sense which is why almost every pilot calls out those words during the take off: airspeed indicator alive.

Did you start when you were young and then stop or are you just getting started? I started young(16)stopped, graduated school joined the Air Force and then started again, stopped again for a few years then started again, flew solo for awhile but never got my license.Now in my 50's want to start again and buy a plane!!!Will be watching you now!Good Luck!!
Joe Smith Exactly I started and stop numerous times but then this last time I just kept on going and now I want to go all the way through my commercial so Joe just do it!

Wow commercial ! I might just shoot for Sport Pilot's license keep it simple.
