216. Yelvertoft to Cosgrove by Narrowboat - Part Nine - Return from Cosgrove
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 гру 2024
- Having reached my destination of Cosgrove and stopped over for a day, I start making my way back to Yelvertoft Marina and have to tackle the seven locks at Stoke Bruerne. In the last lock - CRASH!!
This was a cruise on the Grand Union Canal from Yelvertoft Marina to Cosgrove, near Milton Keynes, but is now the return journey, passing through Stoke Bruerne Locks, Blisworth Tunnel, Buckby Locks, Watford Staircase Flight and Crick Tunnel.

Really enjoy your travels, the lady in the red jumper earned her lunch.
Thank you so much, she certainly did but it's fairly normal for the ladies to do the lock work.
Very nice Alan, looks so cold.
Thank you, it was a miserable morning but brightened up at lunch time x
Thanks Alan for another great adventure. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thank you so much Stevie. All the best.
Not sure how you do it, but you are always full of smiles no matter.
Your videos makes me happy.
That’s very kind of you Eric, thank you, no fun being miserable 😆
Hello everyone. I'm travelling today, so won't be able to respond to comments in the usual way. I hope you enjoy watching, all the best Alan x
Hi Alan, another great vlog. Weren't you lucky with the locks! But that rain is never far away 😅. One day I will see you do a vlog without rain or the threat of it!
Well done for slowing down for moored up boats. You are considerate and sensible. xx
Hi Jenny, thank you so much for your lovely comment, one day the sun will shine all day but I'll probably be somewhere else when it does! Cheers xx
That was a lovely cruise Alan and some great views. Your etiquette on the canal is superb . . . I wish every boater was like you. Thank you so much for doing what you do. Have a great week.
Thank you so much Mark for your lovely comment, I can't help but think you've got me mixed up with someone else ...! Seriously, that is very kind of you to say. You too have a good week ahead. Cheers
Just what I needed Alan. Sundays can be such a bore and to ride alongside you cheered me up no end.
The little crash you had in the lock wasn't anyone's fault but was glad the other man didn't take umbrage.
All the best my friend. Bye for now. Stephen👍
Thank you Stephen, my boat hit his from behind, as I thought he was going to be out of the way more quickly, so it was down to me. Thanks for commenting, all the best Alan
Hi Alan enjoyed the video if not the weather. Nice to hear you talk in traditional British feet rather than metric.
Many thanks Colin, dealing with a global audience, I need to consider metric and imperial. Even our young folk in the UK were brought up on a metric sysytem. Cheers
22nd May...???...my how time fly’s...enjoyed your vlog Alan...
Thank you Michael, cheers.
It says something that a gentleman came out to thank you for slowing down. I’ve seen comments on a couple different social platforms saying that folk NOT slowing down when passing moored craft, is a problem found across many parts of the canal network.
I've been surprised at the speed some boats pass me when I'm moored up and I've even wanted to go out and have a moan, but they're too quick for me. Some say it's hirers but I don't believe you can generalise, some boaters just don't care.
Great timing to have another narrowboat to share the locks with. The community helps one another which is wonderful. Another great Vlog Alan. Take care and stay safe. Have a great week ahead 🌞🌈🌻🍺🍀
Thank you so much for your comment Madeline, boaters do try and help each other, as much as possible. Take care, all the best 😀x
You just to nice...
I'll have to change my ways then!
Confession time. I’ve watched a few of your videos and realized today I hadn’t subscribed!! That’s now fixed.
Enjoyed seeing the lock side of things, particularly how you worked with the other boats. Wonderful video!
Greetings and welcome aboard! As they say, better late than never, thanks for your great comment, cheers.
The sun doesn't always shine on the righteous Alan 🌞
But why not! Cheers Robert
It's been quite some time since I've had the chance to watch. I'm currently installing a wheelchair-accessible shower and new flooring for my mother. This vlog was exceptionally interesting. I enjoyed all the hello's from the passerby's and the nature and the locks. I know you were miserable from the weather, but I long to travel those canals. One day! Take good care and hopefully, I can catch up on some of your older vlogs as I have 3 days off this weekend.
Hi Tim, thank you for your great comment, you must watch when it suits you and have the time available. I hope your endeavours for your mother are going well. All the very best, I'm pleased to hear you have a break this weekend. Keep safe Alan
Alan that was a great Heron photo, thank you very much. It’s in the mid 90s Fahrenheit as I watch this vlog and I long for cooler weather. Looking forward to seeing you in 4 Go Narrowboating in September. Safe travels
Glad you enjoyed it Ginger, I too am looking forward to our September 4 Go Narrowboating. Cheers
Morning Alan The weather turned a bit on your start but it was a good trip without the rain.
Hope your well & keep safe.
Thanks Bob, I'm keeping very well thank you and hope you are.
Hi Alan, enjoyed the vlog as always. Weather seemed better today. Keith & Helen Melbourne Auzz
Thank you both, I’m glad you’re enjoying this cruising series. All the best.
Good Morning Alan.
An interesting vlog as it always is from yourself.
Some of the views as usual were stunning & the sound of the bird's is just beautiful.
Funnily enough, I find the sound of the engine on your boat rather therapeutic. Altho u probably think differently listening to it all day.
Absolutely love the manners & politeness u canal user's practice day in, day out. But I guess you'll always get the odd one's.
Keep them coming Alan.
Have a CTR (Cheese topped roll) for me.
Stay lucky. Stay safe. Stay healthy.
"Bye for now"
Alan L200
Thank you Alan for your great comment, the engine sound doesn't bother me, it would seem odd without it. Most boaters are friendly but there are some grumpy ones. All the best, take care.
Another great video what a shame about the weather. See you got a heron in flight even though it was behind you
Thanks, I did my best on the heron shot. Cheers
A lovely, interesting and eventful vlog. A lovely and deserved word of appreciation for your consideration in slowing down, and that unavoidable crash, you were so calm, but nothing more you could do than what you did. You have earned a restful rest of the day and night. That is quite a day’s efforts. .
Thank you so much Nancy for your lovely comment, it means a lot to me x
Hello Alan I really enjoyed the vlog as usual I love following you on you journeys but you seem to have abit of bad luck with the weather I don’t know why but lately I cant give you a thumbs up when you send a vlog maybe you can help me till next time take care Anne😵🇨🇭
Hi Anne, I hope you are both keeping well, thanks for your lovely comment. It's odd that you can't give a thumbs up but I wouldn't know why that is happening. sorry. All the best, take care x
Yet another interesting vlog Alan 👍
Many thanks Martin.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture 👍
You should changed glasses and jackets randomly to see who notices. Thanks for sharing!
That's a good idea, I actually do that with my glasses. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Alan, just watched vlog, your vlogs are so interesting 🧐
That's so kind of you to say Dean, thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing your travels! I find the sights and sounds of nature and the local architecture so interesting. I find your narrative and the sound of your narrow boat engine so soothing. I’m glad you had nice family time with your sweet grandson and son. How very kind of you to share.
Cheers from Central NY State, USA. 😊
Greetings Monica and thank you so much for your lovely words, I'm really glad you enjoyed watching. I had a great time with my son and grandson. All the best Alan
Love how the heron flew off behind you as you were talking about getting the footage. Nice that the other boat came up to share the locks. At least it was not raining on you and did look like a brighter day at the end of the locks.
Thanks Sheryl. The weather certainly brightened up by lunch time. I'm often surprised at what I see when I look at the footage, all sorts of things go on when I'm not looking! Cheers
I enjoyed that cruse Alan. Looking forward to the next vlog. Stay safe and well.
Glad you enjoyed it Hugh, thanks for commenting. Take care.
Dreary or not, a vlog with you makes for a happy morning for me🤗… I couldn’t help but think what the heck did they do to those poor trees at Yardley Warf😳?Hopefully it’s just a severe trim and the branches and leaves will come back.
Thx for taking us along with you… 💜
What a lovely thing to say, thank you. Trees can be a nuisance, they had been pollarded and there should be further growth but probably to a lesser height, I'm not the best person to comment on that. All the best, take care.
Good video alan crank it stay safe lee
Thanks, you too Lee, cheers.
Thanks Alan love the cruising so lucky to share the locks! I was surprised by all the moored boats along your way this time.
Glad you enjoyed it Helly, thanks for your comment. Some popular mooring areas.
Hello Alan, enjoying your videos. Are you doing all this single handedly?
Greetings Steve and welcome aboard. There's only me involved, so yes single handed. Cheers
Thanks Alan. Give it a bit of welly does sound better than "kick it in the guts Trev!" 😲 A term used occasionally here in New Zealand. 😂 Lovely filming even if it was a dull day. I hope you dined on a cheese top roll for your lunch? Best wishes!
I agree on that! Don’t recall what I ate now but I do recall running out of cheese topped rolls. All the best, take care 👍
Lovely cruise thank you Alan.
Very kind of you to say Penney x
That looked to be a pleasant journey. Good to have help. I think I'd rely on you Alan to travel at the correct speed.
Thanks Philip, I do my best to go at a steady pace. Cheers
Morning Alan, I remember you said before you started to publish these videos, that the weather wasn’t exactly kind to you, that certainly was a dull old day, but so nice to see the trip again. Full marks to the guy who thanked you for slowing down, I know I used to rant and rave at people who went by too quickly, and I think we forget how far a “thank you for slowing down” really goes. Thoroughly enjoyed watching Alan, take care...🍷🍷
Many thanks Steve for your comment, sadly it was a dull day. The boater gave me a bit of a shock when he darted out, I thought he was going to have a go at me, how wrong I was. Glad you're enjoying watching this series. Cheers, all the best.
Great vlog. Alan. Lovely new buildings on the canal at Cosgrove where they were building the sandbag wall. It will look great with some trailing plants when finished. You made me laugh when you said it had brightened up considerably after changing your glasses. Stoke Bruern looked really interesting. Some nice pubs too, take care and thanks for the vlog
Thank you so much Paul. Stoke Bruerne is very much a canal village with a lot of history. All the best, take care, cheers.
Hi Alan
Hi Kat x
It's funny Alan, when I first started watching your vlogs, you reminded me of a character from the Tintin books. I dont think you're a villain at all, now. A pleasant trip with interesting scenery, the weather eventually looking ok. Many thanks, take care.
Thanks Phillip, I know of TinTin but do not recall the villainous character to whom you refer. All the best.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Doctor Müller perhaps in one of his many disguises? I very much enjoy your vlogs by the way !
@@stewy62 Many thanks Stewy - if I may call you that! Cheers
The cement sand bag wall looks like a recipe for a future problem to me. Whereas you with CRT have been using sandbags to support the side of the canal, this is being used as a supporting wall for garden extension with no secure footings other than the side of the canal. Hopefully the steel rods that they are using goes well down into the bank. Just my humble opinion. Great vlog. Regards AJ
Hi Alan, we don’t actually know what’s been used as a footing. The steel rods as well as going down through the bags may be used for lateral anchorage as well. Glad you enjoyed watching. Cheers
Great program Alan. We noticed an old looking milage sign, measured in "Miles". Would a modern sign be mesuured in metreic scale?
Hi Tammy and Glen, all our road signs are in miles, we have not gone fully metric. We buy motor fuel in litres but still talk about miles to the gallon. It's a bit of a mish mash really. Take care x
Alan, have you considered getting reactolites for your next glasses prescription? They change from dark to clear depending on the light conditions. I find them very convenient.
Thanks Stephen, but I've been wearing reactolites for more years than I can remember and was actually wearing them in the film. Cheers
Well, just a thought!!
@@stephenpotter9083 It was a good thought Stephen, thanks. That pair of glasses is quite old and once they go dark, tend to stay that way until back indoors, as it were. Cheers
That was a nice video Alan I enjoyed that one a lot, it’s nice seeing the locks being done.
Thank you so much Lewis, kind regards to you both.
As always, a thoroughly entertains and relaxing video. By the way, my wife said that you look cool in your shades!!
That’s very kind of her Ian, thank her for me👍. Cheers
I filled thousands of bags. The best way is dri. Miix sand gravel. Mix with segment or Lyme mix. Set as a dry bag. Drive a metal steeple every so often. It's good if you can put some big river boalders in the mix... This is youse ally. An after though.. God bless the ones in America. With the fires and now the storms. And leaving Afghanistan.. Xxoo to England. Xxoo to America... South Africa.. Australia.. Xxoo.
Hi Brian. The bags used for towpath repairs were a dry mix of gravel and cement, taken to site and then stacked in the water but only to a low height. Unfortunately, there are many troubles of all sorts around the world. Cheers
Alan, thank you for another lovely video. I've noticed that the videos are not in chronological order, according to the Season. Is there a reason for this?
Thank you Jessiah. I'm not sure what you mean, I don't think I've slipped up, they are all in the order they were filmed. Cheers
Evening Alan, another interesting vlog, you certainly have met some lovely people on your Cosgrove odyssey, and what seem to be abundantly clear is the sense of "Community" that exists with Narrowboaters, although I am sure you have seen that not all Canal folk are pleasant, not sure how you will top the Cosgrove trip, although I have a feeling that you are already planning for another adventure in the near future, keep it up I say! As usual, stay safe. Cheers.
Thank you for your lovely comment, your appreciation means a great deal to me. There is another trip planned, which will take me on to new cut but how extensive that will be I don’t know yet. All the best, take care.
What a mud hole those poor horses were in....
Sad wasn’t it 🙁
I've always wondered the average time for a lock to fill or empty. In your videos it's often edited so I wasn't sure. Is it long enough to take a quick "break" in the cabin or fix a cup of tea or do you have to stay alert at the tiller?
Hi Tim. As a sole boater, you need to be alert and not making tea. One needs to keep a watchful eye on the boat in the lock, whether going up or down. In terms of travel time, 20 minutes is usually considered about right for each lock. So if you have three locks on your journey allow an hour just for those. Sometimes a lock is not ready for you to enter, you may need to fill or empty it. There may be someone in the lock exiting, no-one coming up, so you need to refill. There are so many possibilites. If a lock is ready for you then 10 to 15 minutes is possibe. As a sole boater, I've got to moor up and shut the gates, all takes time. With crew, someone else could do it, withouth the need for stopping. Hope that helps. Cheers
Hey Alan, what do you use to edit your videos. Great work take care
I now use Power Director 365, previously Pinnacle Studio. Cheers
all vloggers I watch now show them doing locks. Not much travelling the canals. Sorry not a good day.!
Hi Bernard, many viewers like to see boats passing through locks, my experience is many boat-tubers don't film that part of the operation. Sorry, but can't please everyone all of the time. Cheers.
“CRASH!!” “Vicious towpath attack”
You’re getting the hang of click bait!!!
I’ve used it if appropriate, but not always so, as it can create negativity from viewers. Has to be used wisely, cheers.
