Excellent video Alan and Sally, I'm really enjoying this series. Sally, very impressive on pushing the boat off when grounded, and then walking down the side of the boat !! marvellous stuff. Also, it's always lovely to see reggie, what a character !! (hope he got a treat in lieu of the ice cream 🙂 ) - Thank you both for taking us along the Ashby.
That’s very kind of you to say, I’m thinking of promoting Sally from first mate to chief mate, as she does a wonderful job. Reggie gets lots of treats, he doesn’t go short of anything. Two more episodes to be published after Christmas but before then our Festive vlog a few days before. Best wishes from us both.
Thanks again David, early next year I’ll be looking at doing some heritage videos from past visits. I have a backlog presently. Christmas video out shortly🎄
Running aground isn’t a great concern and doesn’t cause any damage. It can be a nuisance, if you can’t get off. I’ve found it’s easier to push a boat off from the towpath than to use a barge pole on the boat. Cheers.
@@A-NobodyThat’s pretty much what I do, put it in reverse and swing the boat at the rear by moving the tiller from side to side. It works sometimes but not always, as on this occasion. I think the square back doesn’t help.
We went on the Ashby a couple of years ago. It was really nice. My evening's entertainment today is watching your video and then The Narrowboat Pirate. Alan, Sally.... Thanks for all your time to produce these videos, I really appreciate it. ❤❤ Bye for now 👋👋
Evening Alan and Sally, oh that brings back memories. We moored for the night on the wooden pontoon at Sutton wharf, a lovely spot. I'm sure I recall a bizarre boat on the Ashby with a coffin on the roof, and skeletons adorning it, quite a sight! Thoroughly enjoying watching you both...many thanks for sharing 🍷🍷
Evening Steve. I recall the boat you mean, I’ve seen it twice, but can’t remember where. Perhaps it was in the line of boats leading to Sutton Wharf. Glad you’re enjoying the series, two more episodes to go after Christmas, but before Christmas, I will be publishing a festive vlog🎄. Cheers
Hello Alan Mick from hull really enjoyed this episode hope you are both well and I will look forward to your next episode hope you have a very lovely Christmas and a very lovely New year to 😊😊😊😊
Hi Mick, we’re fine thanks and hope you are. There will be a festive video published just before Christmas, so please look out for that. The cruise will resume after Christmas. We hope you have a wonderful Christmas 🎄and a Happy New Year. Best wishes Alan and Sally🤠🎊
Thanks Alan and Sally for another lovely vlog. Shame you had a bit of rain to contend with but well done for pushing on. The Ashby looks very attractive and would suit us for a hire as my Wife struggles with doing locks and swing bridges ( I love them ) but she won’t drive the boat. Sally done very well pushing the boat out and walking along the gunnel. Sally Gunnel 😂 sounds familiar, not sure on my spelling though. Hope you both have a wonderful weekend
Thanks Paul, we’re glad you enjoyed watching. The Ashby would suit you very well. Gunnel is an odd word and it often gets spelt the way you have, the meaning is understood. It is actually spelt gunwale, which is itself odd. It was used for supporting guns on old warships. Your mention of Sally Gunell brings back memories, she was active in the 80s and 90s, one of our most successful athletes. Sally and I hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas, there will be a festive vlog out, as well before Christmas🎄All the best, take care.
Hi Kat, thank you so much, Sally, Reggie and I wish you and GG a Merry Christmas and hope you have a lovely time. Best wishes for 2025. Festive vlog out today.
That VW Van at 7:06 certainly is an eyeful! Herons are allergic to cameras it seems. It is seldom that one will sit still and be photographed or videoed by a narrowboater! You have certainly met with an extra share of "adventure" on this cruise! There was a mallard there that thought your getting stuck was hilarious! Is that field at 19:21 showing traces of "ridge and furrow" farming?
Hi Stephen. It’s a beast isn’t it. Herons are allergic to my cameras or it may be the boat they don’t like. The number of times I’ve tried to get decent pictures of herons and failed. Without looking, I’ll say yes to the ridge and furrow, there is a lot of it about and I do recall seeing some on the cruise. We have it here at the marina.
Many thanks. All boats pass on the right, it’s an historical thing to do with the way boats were steered mainly by right handers, also I believe incorporated in maritime law.

I am addicted to your videos. As soon as I get notice of a new one I have to stop and watch. I love History, trains, narrowboats and old machinery.
Thanks again David, early next year I’ll be looking at doing some heritage videos from past visits. I have a backlog presently. Christmas video out shortly🎄
Enjoyed the ride! Thanks for taking us along.
That’s good of you to say, thank you.
I am glad to see both of you work as a team when the narrowboat ran aground. Hope there was no damage.

Alan, more often than not, if you run around, it usually helps to step side to side on the stern, thus rocking the boat. In gentle reverse of course.

Enjoyable viewing thanks. Curious to know the history of why narrowboats pass on the right, unlike road vehicles which pass on the left in the UK.
