Good Evening Alan. As always a great varied & very interesting vlog Fantastic scenery which Blighty is full of. Glad to see you avoided the collision. Phew it was close though. After that you definitely deserve a CTR or two even. Great to hear the sheep in the field. Thanks for another journey in your company along the cut. Stay lucky. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Alan L200
Thank you Alan for watching and commenting, I'm glad you enjoyed another of my ventures. I was lucky to avoid hitting the other boat, it happened on a blind bend where there was a width restriction. Cheers, take care.
Thanks Alan for another great adventure with good advice on keeping to a slow speed when going past moored boats and blind bends and narrows. I suppose that keeping a fishing magnet onboard a boat is a great idea as lots of kit can easily be dropped in the cut particularly if you become a clumsy so and so like I have become. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thanks Stevie. That’s exactly it, the magnet is for retrieving anything that falls in the water and the net is for non-metallic items. All the best, cheers.
I could see by the look on your face how close you must have come to a head-on collision, I'm ever so pleased you avoided an incident. If I get a notification of your Vlog whilst I'm outside I'll watch it in a coffee shop on my 10in tablet with a friend of mine whose passion is old and classic buses and coaches but does like your style of filming and presentation I told him I agree. Anyway, Alan as usual a very enjoyable Vlog. Keep safe and bye for now. Stephen 👍
Thanks Stephen, that’s interesting to know. I’ve been thinking of getting a larger tablet. You may be aware I’m out cruising at the moment making the next series, which will be even better and not so long. I too like old buses but not fanatical with the knowledge, just love the memories they give. London Transport mainly and London Country. All the best, take care.
Another great video Alan! Thanks for taking me along. @ 7:56 "A house with it's own mooring." That is my dream Alan! The best of both worlds really would you agree?
Hi Alan. A bit of seizing wire around the pin on the shackle, or a small plastic tie, will stop the pin undoing and stop you losing the end of the mooring chain. Kevin
Hi Alan We have watched several vlogs in a row so now going back to make comments. Back to Buckby locks we see. We have just bought my first Nicholson Guide number 1 to have a read. Cheers Keith & Helen Melbourne Auzz.
One moment there was a "dead slow" sign. The next, you were reving and hooting. It was almost like you were a teenage rebel for a second there, Alan! 🤣 But you were slowing the boat down in reverse, I know. Oh, what a time for the bowcam to stop working! A near head-on! It's good you had your wits about you. I think boats are supposed to hoot when they can't see, but I can understand not wanting to. Another lovely video, I enjoyed the scenery and narration. Thanks for making it! 🙂 (Is "narration" the word? I don't know, it's silly o'clock here.)
Narration sounds a good word to me. Thanks for watching and commenting. I often sound my horn approaching blind bends and bridges, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily captured on film. Can get confusing with bridges, as cars hoot as well going over bridges, because of their hump back nature and poor visibility. All the best Alan
@@MyNarrowboatVenture I didn't think about cars hooting too. It would be confusing. And here I was thinking of a little motorboat on my local canal, fitted with a horn so it wouldn't be mistaken for a bicycle on the towpath. All the best Ethan
Morning Alan. Nice weather for a leisure cruise. Summer brings out more boaters to the canal. Good to see most boaters slowed their boats for one another. Although sometimes one or two might not be considerate or somehow lost control. Saw another vlogger where his moored boat was almost crashed by a narrow boat who lost control. So wishing you and boat stay safe and healthy for more cruising and fun adventures. Look forward to your next vlog. Have a nice day and great week ahead🌈🌻🌺
Thank you for your lovely comment Madeline, there will always be incidents of one sort or another that can't be avoided but speeding can be. All the best, take care x
Thanks for another lovely vlog Alan, well done for avoiding the collision. There are quite a few chances in a days cruising for this sort of thing to happen I should imagine. There was some nice properties and lovely scenery on your trip. Well done for getting your ring and coupling back, expert fisherman 👍
Morning Alan Enjoyed that cruise lots of nice boats you passed & a near miss. You do have some wonderful days. Sad the weather changed but as you got inside that worked out well. Take care.
Morning Alan, that was just what we’ve been waiting for, your trip back along what was our “home patch”...such happy memories. That point where you nearly had a head on bump always made me cautious, right on a bend and the narrowest of gaps to get through, you did really well to control the boat as you did, well done. Loved watching that stretch of canal again...thanks for letting us hop on board with you for the journey...cheers...🍷🍷
I'm glad it brought back fond memories, I was disappointed that the bowcam ran out of puff just a few minutes before the incident, as we would have seen how close it was, it must have been fender to fender I think, without actually touching. I'm out cruising presently for my next series. All the best, take care.
Thank you for your vlogs, great content and photography. Question:: your engine is much quitter than most, is the compartment more insulated than others or something else like better maintained?
It’s interesting you should say that. Different cameras pick up the sound differently. I was given a tip about lining the drainage channels under the deck boards with hose pipe. I did a vlog on this but can’t remember which one off hand. I also have an old rubber backed mat on deck, which quietens the sound. Hope that answers you ok, cheers.
Hi Alan watching your vlogs it seems apparent that a great many narrow boaters have dogs aboard. Have you ever concidered getting a dog. My dog loves watching your videos doesn't move until it's finished
I'm glad I make your dog happy. You're right many boaters do have dogs but it's not for me, for various reasons, I have had a dog in the past but apart from anything else, a dog is just too much of a tie. Cheers
You did a great job during the near miss. How do you stop? Do you put the engine in reverse? Funny how when a bridge comes down the others continue numbered as they were. Makes sense.
Thank you so much Cathy, you're right the engine is put into reverse. It would be impossible to renumber bridges, the build number would be part of its history and must remain. Cheers
Hi Martin, this was in May, I did have some issues with cameras and was disappointed that the bowcam ran out of puff at a crucial point, but I don't recall anything in particular. Cheers
That was a close call with the other boat - are you able to insure your boat like you do a car? Having watched a few vlogs recently where there have been near misses and sometimes collisions I do wonder if the hire boatyards need to give customers more instructions before allowing them on the canals.
Boats are insured and need to be, in order to be licensed to use the canals. Hire boat companies give advice to new boaters and I believe there are new regulations about it. You can pay £200 for a day’s training, so it’s limited what you can learn in a short space of time from a hire company. A blind bend and width restriction was the issue, just bad timing that both boats were there at that moment.
A lovely wide canal for the most part, shame all canals weren't built to that standard, or better. Cost, obviously determines. That near miss, why is the canal still narrowed for a crossing that doesn't exist anymore, and why is that tree allowed to restrict sight lines? That won't be the first near miss there and it won't be the last.
There are these narrowings all over the network, some for missing bridges, some for other reasons, it just wouldn't be cost effective to remove them but in this instance the sight line could be improved but it needs 'offside veg cutting' and there hasn't been so much of that recently due to covid. Cheers
Evening Alan, I must say that when you first introduced the odyssey to Cosgrove, you did mention that your recollection of the journey was that it rained quite a lot - well you well your recollection was correct! Good job you have a good collection of waterproofs! Two questions today, both concerning kit: Do you use an external microphone, if so, which one? And can you let me know what video editing suite you us? I am looking to get some recommendations as I will be publishing my video of a recent trip to the South-west on UA-cam. As usual, stay safe (and dry) Cheers.
When you say external microphone do you mean a wi-fi one. The answer as yet is no. I have recently purchased a Rode wearable microphone which attaches to the camera by cable. I’ve not used it yet. Eventually that will become wifi based. I just talk straight to camera. I’m using Power Director 365 for editing. Hope that helps, cheers.
Another gem. The rain looks lovely and your narrow boat will be cozy and warm. Have a cuppa and thanks for taking me along.

Nice scenery with the May blossom...cannot understand why sunken wrecks are not removed,,..
Thank you so much. Some wooden boats are purposefully sunk, as it helps preserve the timber. Cheers

Have you found anything really neat using your magnet? It certainly didn't look like the kind of day you would want to go for a long cruise.
I don’t actually go magnet fishing, the magnet is for recovering items dropped overboard, cheers.
