I love my X-H2S. One huge plus that I don't think you mentioned is that the super fast stacked sensor readout means negligible rolling shutter artifacts, even doing the occasional whip-pan. This makes it a great camera for filming action sequences and for handheld shooting in general. Coming from the Sony a6300 which has some of the worst rolling shutter in the industry, this is a huge luxury!
Thanks for this great review. I'm a long-time Fuji shooter and the H2s are the best! I see reviews like yours, and I'm amazed that some think the XH2 or T5 is better for photography. The S is great for wildlife and sports. Shooting 40fps tracking a BIF is incredible. Combined with bird/eye detection, it is a game changer.
Not many people are actually talking about the xh2s for photography. And it’s honestly a game changer for Fuji. It runs circles round the older xt cameras I’m yet to try the video features but if its as good as the photography side of things then it’s a camera I’ll keep for many years
It is becourse the Xh2 is the photography camera. Just becourse xh2s have a stacked sensor, does not make it better than XH2. Infact I dont get why people would choose the S version over Xh2. The only difference are the readout time are better on the S, while the XH2 have more pixels. Else same processor, construction. Who needs 40 pictures per second when you only do photography.
@@andersistbesser Does not matter, it is still better to have more crop factor. Waaaaay more versatile. To me Xh2s a hype over something you would hardly never use. you dont shoot 40pic per second in most types of photography. Its very few cases that would make somekind of sense. I would say you can do 20 pics per second 99% of photography. That one stop is hardly a problem, nothing you cant solve in the setting of the camera.
Fuji just dropped a new firmware update. I bought this camera two days ago, this helped seal the deal. Also I really love all your videos thanks for giving us so much information and making these reviews, happy new year!
00:56 - you're right, Full Frame is not always more cinematic. I also wanna add that huge background blur is overrated and not necessarily 'cinematic'. Framing, composition, lighting and motion are far more important for the cinematic look and feel in my opinion.
Great video! I tested both and honestly I liked the S better for both stills and video. I was leaning toward the XH2 since I am primarily a portrait photographer but now im rethinking it because I think the faster af and better video performance (when I need it) makes more sense practically speaking.
That is a tough one but i think if you are really focused on portrait it makes much more sense to do the higher megapixel sensor. Personally for my portrait work I like to go in and fine tune every single detail.
I thought about getting more megapixels but in my opinion the pros given in the xh2s are more noticeable than the higher detail, however I don't print large canvases of my photos so that might make a diffefence
You forgot to mention at 30fps and under the sensor reads out at 14bit! 14bit readout means maximum dynamic range and color richness. It honestly blew my mind what the camera produces with that 14bit readout.
X-E4 is what I have. I was considering X-T5. However, I am now considering X-H2S because of the faster autofocus, smaller MP, and the internal Prores. However, I do not like the flippy screen. In fact, I feel like Fuji f's with the customer base when they bring out the flippy because they do tilt on the next iteration and I have have that one. Just look at X-T5, perfect tilt screen! Great video.
Let me ask you a question are you a film maker or a youtuber primarily. Because a lot of content creators are not film makers. Most big budget films are on Super 35 which is APS-C and manual focus. Now contemt creators are one man operations don't really do wedding videos so there mindsets are different
q t wtqrt of this video if ok ask whats the lens attached to the xh2s ive got nikon z7 and an om1 as shoot wildlife and other styles too but considering swapping to fuji either this camera and whatever that lens is or the xh2 or evn maybe get both camera bodies and can then swap lenses looks a monster of a camera oo
Using anamorphic lenses will increase the perceived rolling shutter effect. So using a 2x squeeze on a camera with a 10ms rolling shutter will stretch the image, doubling the skew effect. The train shot would look a lot better shooting on a spherical lens.
I’m a Sony A7iv wedding video shooter and I’m thinking about switching or at least picking up a new Fuji. I rented the XT-4 last year and it was nowhere near as good as my Sony. But these new cameras really make me interested. Money is tight this time of year so it’s hard to decide which one I want to start with.
I'm using Sony A7siii for my daily professional work. Also, I have the A7iv for my personal work. Love both cameras. I've always been curious about Fujifilm cameras, I've never used them before.
The slow sensor readout speed for the FX30 is a deal breaker for me, not even close to the FX3, i'm getting the X-H2S next year. I loved shooting on Fuji negatives in the good old days, later had an S3 pro DSLR that never dissapointed me, looking forward to this one.
Don't you see a problem with filming in 25 frames? all the edges tremble unbearably, this is not a normal film blur, but a very unpleasant effect for the eye. This happens to me in every setting, with every codec. Shutter, of course, at 50. What's the problem?
I think you made a bunch of mistakes when talking about the XT-5. It only shoots 6.2k non open gate (X-H2 does 8k). Also it doesn't have a stacked sensor and the readout is slower and it has less DR because of that. (As it uses a 12 bit sensor readout, (XH-2s uses a 14bit readout for flog2)
Interesting camera. Tried to find sample images, but anything I can see on internet has muted colors and luck of microcontrast. Colors in this video looks good.
Excellent review and once again, expertly explained in a manner which is both technical enough but also easy to understand relating to the various aspects.. helping one to decide what is most suitable for your own needs. A quick note.. isn’t it possible possible to record ProRes RAW with the XT-5 to an external recorder such as an Atomos Ninja V+ I believe. Without memorizing the other small differences in video mode perhaps this might be the answer for those who really want the best of both worlds i.e. 40 megapixel and ProRes. Can the XT-5 also do 4:3 for Vertical/Instagram format? Thx and regards
I love how "cinematic" is thrown into an equation for FF, when the absolute majority of cinema has been made on Super35 (which is so damn close to APSC) sensors and film capture.
thats a fair point. I can see what you meant about my choice of words. But theres a reason every major manufacturer is large format. super 35 was a budget constraint, and most of hollywood shot anamorphic. Everyone thought bigger was better
But i will add that in more recent videos I have also said, that sometimes smaller is better because it adheres to a different visual language and sometimes full frame/ large format is not the right move
Very helpful video. Thanks for the review. I'm leaning towards the xt5 because I'm 90% photography. I.almost wish there was a xt5s which brought the auto focus speed and accuracy to a more photo centered camera. Also, I don't really need 40 MP. Smaller files would be fine.
Larger sensors DON'T capture more light. A larger sensor at the same Tstop captures exactly the same light as a S35 sensor at the same Tstop. "Some" larger sensors can be more sensitive... but that is by no means not a hard and fast rule. Also larger sensors don't automatically capture more detail and colour information... plenty don't. Until the last few years most FF / 135 sensors only captured 8bit 420... whereas many S35 sensors could capture 10but 422. The size of the sensor has nothing to do with the amount of detail or colour information... that is down to the quality of the specific sensor (whatever the size) and the processing within the camera.
6245x4163 vs 7746x5164 (26 vs 40) isn't really that big of a jump in pixels, all the camera companies say megapixels because it sounds like a lot, but it's only 1501x1001 more.. I was thinking of the X-H2, but now I think the X-H2s is better.
On route. Its gonna take longer than usual because I am hoping to shoot a commercial with it and then discuss the commercial and on set performance of the camera.
While these cameras are fantastic, as an amateur it's not in my budget. I'm still loving my XT-3 though. The best part of the new Fuji equipment releases for me was the large number of lenses that have gone for sale on the used market. I was able to get two lenses I didn't think I'd be able to afford for a long time recently; the XF56mm V1.0 and the XF90mm. I got both at great prices and both are like new. Super cool!!! Great video full of great info though!!
