      Yeah he was drafted at age 25 which I always found mysterious; I believe I understand now that he was recruited once scouts discovered him and he must’ve been 21 at the time but I suppose he harbors a great underdog story with that being said and it’s not too late to follow your dream as a metaphor

    A lot of people say that the Warriors over Mavericks was the biggest upset in NBA history. But imo the Nuggets beating the Sonics in 94 still is. On paper, matchup wise Denver had no business winning that series. Just remarkable.

    • @oneyedthing
      @oneyedthing 4 роки тому +1

      NO
      Nuggets were a nightmare match up for Sonics. They even split them in the regular season 2-2. The only western teams that split the top seeded Sonics were the Rockets and the Nuggets. Everyone in the West was run over by the Sonics
      If the Nuggets woke up early about the match up problems they easily could have 3-0 the Sonics.
      Same can be said to GSW vs the Mavs. Mavs could easily swept everyone else in the playoffs except for GSW

    crazy thing about that 94 Nuggets team is the next round against the Jazz they managed to push that series to 7 games. So a team that had no business being the playoffs was a game away from the western conference finals.

  • @michaelcavanaugh4433
    @michaelcavanaugh4433 5 років тому +5

    I remember that series very very well. I am from Houston and a big Rockets fan. Sam Perkins was Hakeem's kriptonite. The Rockets did bring Seattle to game 7 in 1993 and lost game 7 by 2 points so who knows if Seattle would have beat the Rockets in 1994. But the bookends of the Rockets 2 championships resulted in losses to Seattle in both 1993 and 1996. The Rockets won 5 of 6 against the early 90's championship Bulls as the Bulls could not guard Hakeem and Vernon Maxwell did very well matching up against Jordan, so it is possible that Houston had more problems vs Seattle than Chicago. The Rockets finally overcame Seattle when they got Charles Barkley, so that felt good. End result of 1994 and 1995, Dreams that last forever if you are a Houston fan!!!

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 5 років тому

      The Sonics lowest shooting and scoring averages were actually against the Rockets out of all the West teams the first 2 seasons Rudy T was coach. The 2nd season only 2 teams in the conference held the Sonics below 45% shooting, the Rockets and Nuggets. I feel with the defense the Rockets had they would've probably gotten out of the West regardless in the the 7 game series the Sonics won it was the 2 possessions they got in overtime when the Rockets should've had possession that ended up making the difference. The Sonics really became the kryptonite of the Rockets when they were an uptempo team with Drexler and they didn't have a PF, the Sonics in that period averaged over 105 ppg and shot nearly 48% overall against the Rockets, those were significant increases.

    I watched that series live and u could see what Denver’s game plan was since they knew if u allowed Seattle trapping d to force a bunch of turnovers which lead to open baskets u basically didn’t stand a chance. They also knew that Seattle half court offense was mostly a detlef post up and Sam perk spotting up since kemp hadn’t developed a jump shot at that time.

      one thing weird is how the 2012 76ers 2011 grizzlies and 1994 nuggets all took the conference ssemi finals to 7 games and the knicks in 99 won the east but it was a lockout so they weren't a true 8th seed since they were 6 games out of first when the playoffs started out east so thats just funny to me that the 2007 warriors are the only team to lose in 5 the next round as a 8th seed upset team..the 94 sonics lost cause it was a 5 game series same for the 99 knicks the 2012 76ers won cause of injury same for the 2011 grizz but the 07 warriors did something no one expected cause the mavs won 25 more games than them and they won in 6 without any injuries or luck .they just own flat out

    I know people are already pointing it out, but the story of this Nuggets team can’t be told without mentioning their second round playoff series against the Jazz. They fell behind 3-0, and managed to force a Game 7 before finally losing.
    Denver won six games that postseason, ALL of them were elimination games. That’s legitimately incredible. Even if they didn’t make it to the conference finals, the 93-94 Nuggets are without a doubt the most resilient team in NBA history.

    Seattle had been making progress leading up to this with Kemp and Payton.
    1991- make playoffs
    1992- win a playoff series
    1993- win 2 playoff series
    Each year,, going farther,
    But in 1994, when it seemed like they would take that final step, they instead went backwards.
    To think an inexperienced Nuggets team beat a SEA team that had made it to Game 7 of the ‘93 West Finals.
    Heck, Seattle has been in a first round game 5 the prior year with Utah so it’s not like this was unfamiliar territory

    Game 4, roughly 30 seconds left in regulation, Sonics up 3. Shawn Kemp gets the sh*t hacked out of him going to the hoop and goes to the line to shoot two. If he makes just one of them this upset never even happens. As a Seattle fan I’m still not over it. Sonics would have rolled to the finals after that and most likely handled NY in the finals IMO. Their next two playoff opponents would have been teams they had beat the year before. Denver despite having 21 less regular season wins than Seattle was just a really bad matchup specifically for the Sonics. Had they drawn anyone else at the 8 spot in round one they’d have been just fine.

    The Sonics were what I like to refer to as a matchup casualty, like rock, paper, scissors. They were a dynamite team but as it turned out, a flawed team. It's hard to tell looking back if it was a fatal flaw that would have manifest itself regardless of the opponent or if Denver was the only team structured in a way that they could exploit it. I'm leaning toward the latter so although there was no guarantee the Sonics would've taken it all the way, I think they'd have had a far better shot of beating Utah and would've been the more dangerous opponent against the Rockets than either Denver or Utah. Or the Knicks for that matter. And in case anyone is wondering, the Sonics and Rockets split 4 head to head games in the regular season that year with the home team winning all 4 games.

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 4 роки тому +1

      The Sonics achilles heel was playing in the halfcourt, that's why the Rockets before Drexler joined them matched up well with them. They played the halfcourt style and had a legit PF, Drexler turned them into an uptempo team and not having a PF made the Rockets vulnerable inside. Perkins being a shooter that played the C position made it difficult for Dream in the paint.

    • @madcapper6
      @madcapper6 4 роки тому +1

      @@ChrisM07 Perkins was a part of it, yeah, I agree with that. His perimeter game was often clicking against the Rockets, which often drew Hakeem farther away from the basket, allowing guys like GP and Kemp more opportunities to get to the hoop than other teams normally had against them. I'll tell ya who the Sonics had a lot of trouble with throughout those years though and that's Barkley. Barkley killed them in the '93 conference finals and I believe it was his first year with the Rockets in '97 when they finally broke through against the Sonics in the playoffs that year after losing to them in '87, '93 and '96.

    • @mongoslade277

      @@madcapper6 Right again. Barkley with that 44 & 24 in game 7 of the western conference finals vs Kemp. It's mental vs Barkley. Shawn Kemp had no problems with Otis Thorpe and Carl Herrera from Houston. I think that's why they beat the Rockets in 1993

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 Рік тому

      @@mongoslade277 False, Kemp actually had more good games against Barkley than he did against the Rockets with Thorpe/Herrera there. Barkley was simply a scorer, Thorpe on the other hand was a defensive minded player he was probably the best defensive PF the Rockets ever had. Carl Herrera was like Thorpe a very tough defensive player and extremely agile both guarded Kemp pretty well usually. The Sonics weren't even the team to beat in the West the Suns were considering they were the conference champions. They also led the league in scoring and the Rockets not only beat them after dropping the first 2 games at home they held the Suns almost 10 points below their season average, that Rockets team was much stronger compared to the 96 team that looked overmatched against the Sonics.
      Kemp's scoring and shooting averages in 97 against Barkley weren't that much different from the prior year, the big difference in the Rockets getting swept and winning the following year was having Barkley and Kevin Willis on the frontline to matchup better with the Sonics forwards. Barkley had 1 game that entire series where he dominated down the stretch (G4), G3 he had 0 fgs (only 3 points off freethrows) in the 4th and G7 didn't score at all the last quarter.

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 Рік тому

      @@madcapper6 Barkley didn't really kill the Sonics in 97 outside of G4. 2 of the games the Rockets won he didn't have a fg in the 4th quarter at all (G3 3 points off freethrows and G7 scoreless in the 4th).

      This Nuggets team didn't have any playoff experience though. The Nuggets made them play in the halfcourt which was their achilles heel if the Sonics had that much trouble with the Nuggets the Jazz and Rockets wouldn't have been any easier. That Rockets team had a stronger frontcourt compared to the one they had when Drexler was with them, there was also the Knicks out East the Sonics would've more than likely ran into a roadblock regardless.

      Even if the Jazz and the Rockets forced halfcourts, it would have been easier. Already demonstrated on 1993/1996 Sonics beat them. You can see the competitiveness on both. win one lose one. There is a diffference when Nuggets were winning 3 straight.
      Not even Olajuwon/Malone/Ewing had the total blocks of Dikembe. The main problem they had with the Nuggets is speed. Nuggets was able to outrun them as well. Not only that, the right amount of bodies they put on Kemp. Young Rodgers/Smith/Dikembe was just too much. It countered Kemp's athleticism. A match up from hell.
      If there was too blame, it was Dan Isle who had the right tools to beat the Sonics and the Jazz. Playoff experience falls into place but Dan Isle mindset wasnt there.. Even in his mind they had no chance. They started off 0-2 vs Sonics and 0-3 vs Jazz.
      Rockets/jazz/Knicks/Magic can always force half courts but Sonics was just quicker overall. The Nuggets were the only team that could have beaten them in a series that year.

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 4 роки тому

      @@oneyedthing That doesn't mean the Sonics would've beaten them in 94. Those series went to a deciding game it wasn't like the Sonics breezed through them with little trouble, the Sonics got knocked out by the Lakers in the 1st round too they were beatable. The Rockets with Drexler was the only team the Sonics handled fairly easily and that was when their frontcourt wasn't as strong as the one they had when they won their 1st championship.

      The Sonics also didn't have a true leader on the team yet. Payton eventually took the leader role later on when he emerged as a top 10 player that's why I said the Sonics would've likely ran into a roadblock regardless.

      Still considering a 3 zip win by the Nuggets. Sonics didnt have a clue.
      In my opinion with a lesser talent in 1996 Sonics reached the finals.
      Im not saying they would beat the Rockets/Jazz 94-95 like a sharp knife cutting into butter, rather they had the edge. Then again.. The Sonics beating them in 93 and 96 proved it otherwise.
      Now getting 3 zipped by the 94 Nuggets and and worse by the 95 Lakers posed a lot of similarities. Young team with a backcourt/frontcourt. Match up problems doenst really matter if your with a superstar or not. A right amount of role layers can beat a top team. All it needed was a regular season match up. and right seeding in the post season.
      2007 Dallas with MVP Dirk also infamously proved that.
      Contrary to popular belief they didnt "choke".
