I think yes it is possible for an 8 seed to win the title under the following circumstance. If a very good teams top 1 or 2 stars gets injured early in the season but recovers in time to make a playoff push or comes back during the 1st round of the playoffs. That's the only circumstance where I can see a really good team fall to the #8 seed.

  • @samlee7420

my greatest moment as a Knicks fan. especially when spreewell stood up all mad at the bench and took off his warm ups and threw it on the floor demanding the coach to put him in. Knicks was trailing and sprewell kept sinking 3s back to back and then orchestrated a fool proof fast break run with long range passing Charlie ward's QB skills that was so hard to defend against. it was Cinderella story. the old and worn out grandmama came out of no where and made clutch shots Allen Houston's buzzard beater. dude that was a very emotional season. the NBA is not the same.

Shortened season. That’s the main reason, in my estimation. This was a very experienced roster. Had they played a full 82-game season, they probably would’ve finished higher in the standings. Still, what they did was extraordinary, though not as improbable as, say, the 1995 Rockets.

If Patrick Ewing was healthy, the Knicks would of probably beat the Spurs. The Knicks was like a 2-3 seed masquerading as an 8th seed that year. Tim Duncan simply dominated Larry Johnson (6’7) who was way smaller than Duncan (6’11). A healthy Ewing and Camby together would of Matched up way better against Duncan and Robinson twin towers.

  • @SK-uu2fg

Just to add to the Phil Jackson thing... A big reason Van Gundy wasn't fired was because Patrick Ewing privately and publicly said he'd rather have him than Phil.
That was also a big reason why the knicks didn't give Ewing an intetview for their head coaching position - even tho he's the best player in team history - while Phil Jackson was president. Also, owners hate him cause he was the President of the Player's Union.

Oh I remember the 1999 Finals, being in Europe it was the first NBA Finals I followed live at 2AM (to, usually, 6AM... :/). Sure, my favorite team the Spurs were the better team, but I'll always have tremendous respect for this NY Knicks team because they made lemonade out of lemons. At the time they said "the first 8 seed to make the Finals", and still to this day the only one. What an accomplishment in and of itself.
During the games, they left everything on the floor and without their star Patrick Ewing, they displayed an absolutely flawless attitude.
After that year, I always had a lot of respect for these players, Larry Johnson, Latrell Sprewell, Allan Houston & Marcus Camby.

Likely will not happen again. There's a book called "The Science of Luck" that talks about different sports and basketball is not surprisingly, the sport with the least amount of luck involved which is why 1 and 2 seeds nearly always make the finals. This situation for New York was a perfect storm because of the shortened season and the injuries in the regular season that made them appear like a 8 seed, but if it was a full season they probably would have been a 4 or maybe even a 3 seed. They all got healthy just in time for the playoffs which was perfect, but if it was a full season, you have to think Ewing and some of the older players may not have stayed healthy.
It was a remarkably stacked roster, aside from the guys you mentioned, they also had Chris Childs and Charlie Ward (who were always solid, but never great) Dennis Scott (who was still a great shooter), Kurt Thomas (who was always underrated), Herb Williams (one of those savvy vets who had a fantastic career in Indiana) and David Wingate.

    • @hennylo68

This team wasn't a real number 8 seed. This team should have been a 3rd seed at worse. They just happened to be bad in the regular season then got hot and figured it all out come playoff time.

One of my best off-court memories from this season came in my high school sports journalism class. We were privileged enough to have invited Mike Breen to come and chat with us. There was a Q&A session and I gave Mike Breen a statement/question. This would've been around April or so, so the Knicks were languishing in the standings. Well I said to Mr. Breen, "What do you think of the Knicks' chances at winning the championship? I think they can go all the way (something like that)." It was the cool thing for the kids in NY to hate on the Knicks, so you can imagine the cool kids all laughing and mocking me at that moment. Mike Breen also gave a cliched response along the lines of, "Any team can beat any other team on any given day", but he didn't see the Knicks going anywhere.
By the time the LJ was hitting the most famous 4-point play in league history, school was already out. I had graduated. There were no faces around to rub it in. Just pure bliss. I like to imagine that somewhere out there, Mike Breen remembered that dorky kid from John Bowne High School who kinda predicted the Knicks would get this far.
Edit: All the love and respect in the world for Mike Breen. The man's a legend.

The beat atlanta then beat the pacers not even going 7 & of course lj's 4 pt play the loudest I've ever heard the garden. The above shot if the crown all standing at once was amazing. When they won the east people in the crowd were weeping. It was so exciting. Ewing & lj were out for the finals.
Also in general the Knicks were the one team with bitter rivalries with 3 teams the bulls the pacers & the heat. No other east team had rivalry's where it was like a war. They were such a good solid team that just had that trouble getting over the hump. 2 finals in 5 years is pretty cool but heartbreaking esp for ewing. Many feel their was a curse bc of that draft if Ewing that most feel was fixed to bring ny with all its media money & buzz a championship

I feel like the only way this happens is if there is an full season injury to a major player who returns for the playoffs. Team chemistry would still be a huge issue. So it would have to be an already established team in a tough conference.

You make excellent videos. You really have all the details and put it together very well. the videos bring back a lot of memories for me, but some of my memories are not accurate, which is fine. I didn't know that the Knicks were the 8th seed. I thought Duncan was a rookie, etc.
They should make the first round best of 5 again. Obviously money.

I do believe there will be another 8th seed in the finals eventually. Maybe a franchise player gets hurt early in the season. At the trade deadline, the team gets some reinforcement, and their own star player returns from injury. It takes this new team a while to gel, but once they get going, they get going.
Admittedly, it's not very likely, but eventually it might happen.

For an 8th seed to get to the finals, the team would need a lot of veterans with past playoff experience, or recently won a title, meaning they know what it takes to win. It's not going to be young team, as they would be destroyed by a top seed.

I was a Spurs fan at that time, but I rooted for that Knicks team. There was no one from that team, who overshadowed the others. Everyone took his chance to gave as much help to the team as he could. It was a very fine roster, Larry Johnson, Allen Houston, Latrell Sprewell and of course Ewing. I was a bit sad that they could not managed to win.

I think that it could happen again if a certain team struggles with injuries to their stars throughout the regular season, only to see them eventually come back just before the start of the playoffs. The 2015 OKC thunder's team comes to mind. Had they made it to the postseason as an 8th seed, they may have had a very long run that year

  • @jokerofmorocco
    @jokerofmorocco 6 років тому +25

I would say making the NBA Finals for the 8th seed is definately possible since all you need is some injuries to star players but then them recovering at the end of the season or a young team significantly improving throughout the year

one reason i disagree is the 99 lockout short season is why it occured..that luck isnt gonna happen again...that knicks team made the finals with 27 losses....all 8 seeds have that many losses before the playoffs...had the season gone 82 games they would of bee a top 5 seed ...guaranteed...the heat werent a real 1 seed..heck they were only 10 games better than the 8 seed

What made the cinderella knicks of 99 so great is that they were a newly assembled team with new pieces while there other oponents were playoff battle tested and had been with each other for a few years .and they made this historical playoff run without there all star center and best player patrick ewing .coach van gundy didnt have much of a strategy wirh this new squad that he new norhinf about .the offense was get the ball to houston or sprewell and play some timely defense .this was an unbelieveable magical run and although this team lost in the finals to the twin towers that were the san antonio spurs led by the admiral and big fundemental this still was the greatest playoff run in all of nba history hands down .as larry johnson eloquently stated i am on a team full of runaway slaves lol.power to the people

  • @jamesonchandler971

I think that it could happen again. But one circumstance would be that the star player would be injured part of the season like say a jimmy butler with the t wolves and the injury would bring the teams wins down to the 8 seed. Even though they would be an 8 seed, they would have a superstar player.

the trade deadline can make a low seed team win. 20193rd seed 76ers on the west side have a chance they got Butler and Harris during the season.
