@@qinghe6511 They didn't make the conference finals in 95, they got knocked out in the first round by the Lakers that year. They were playing in the Tacoma Dome in 95 while they were making Key Arena. They were bumped in the first round in 94&95. They were really good in the regular season both years but stunk it up in the playoffs.
96 they came out an smoked everyone but the Bulls.
I got to see MJ live twice that season, once in the regular season an then game 4 of The Finals. Sonics won both games. I can barely remember either game I just know the Sonics won an MJ didn't have a huge game in either of them. I'm still grateful I got to see him in person. Still grateful for that 96 Sonics team as well, they brought me a ton of joy.
I want the Sonics to come back when the league expands in 2025 but the game isn't the same anymore, it's not as fun to me now. The tough defense is gone and I can't stand it.

No one can sit here and say Ben's defense was the main reason they won it all....only that he was a big facet. The addition of Sheed put them over the top.
Bill Russell had Sam Jones and Havlicek closing out games for him on the other end of the floor....especially when Wilt would outperform him at nearly every statistical facet.
This Seattle team was MUCH more talented than the Nuggets outside of the C spot...they just ran into a brick wall named Dikembe. They couldn't get anything going in the painted area with him present.
To block 6 shots a game (and alter many shots which were misses even if he wasnt credited with a block) in a series in the 90s era with the 3 pt line and widened lane compared to the 60s was unheard of

On top of that I felt the Suns were actually the tougher matchup out of two teams at this point. Barkley was more of a versatile player compared to Kemp and KJ was as much of a problem for the Rockets guards as Payton, if not more.

Seattle had been making progress leading up to this with Kemp and Payton.
    1991- make playoffs
    1992- win a playoff series
    1993- win 2 playoff series
    Each year,, going farther,
But in 1994, when it seemed like they would take that final step, they instead went backwards.
To think an inexperienced Nuggets team beat a SEA team that had made it to Game 7 of the ‘93 West Finals.
Heck, Seattle has been in a first round game 5 the prior year with Utah so it’s not like this was unfamiliar territory

The difference between 1994 and 1993 was that they had the best record in the NBA, and were expected to win it all. They have all those expectations going against the pressure of having to play a do or die Game 5 where they could become the first #1 seed to lose to a #8 seed. Not the same pressure as trying to beat the Jazz in Game 5 in 1993. And the way they played this game, it was obvious they were feeling that pressure.

My favorite player of all time Kemp was the main reason they lost this series he average 13 points on 37% shooting mutombo shut him down. Kemp miss 2 big free-throws at the end of game 3 as they were going for the SWEEP (best of 5 series) Denver tied it won in OT and never look back

I believe Kemp was strictly an inside player at this point, which is a problem when facing Mutombo. I noticed him shooting more jumpers when Seattle made the Finals 2 years later

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 2 роки тому

@@redpillfreedom6692 That's why I feel the Sonics would've struggled with the Rockets in a series at this point. Kemp not being a jumpshooter meant he would have to play in the post often, and the Rockets had more guys to put on him who could give him problems like Thorpe and Herrera. In 96 both were gone he didn't have to worry about those 2 anymore.
The other problem the Sonics would've had going further even if they had survived this series was their rebounding they were last out of all the playoff teams in that category, the Rockets on the other hand led the league in defensive rebounding.

The Sonics were the worst rebounding team in the playoffs while the Rockets led the league in defensive rebounding, even if they had gotten out of this series that would've still gotten exposed in later rounds by more experienced teams. The Suns were actually the tougher matchup KJ and Barkley were more proven go to guys at that point compared to Payton/Kemp and a better rebounding team, whoever won that series was winning the West regardless.

@@redpillfreedom6692 I know the Sonics were always a tough matchup, but the Rockets had a stronger frontline with Thorpe and Herrera the Rockets did have the personnel to beat them. Plus the Sonics didn't have any real leadership at the time Kemp and Payton weren't consistent playoff performers yet. The Rockets on the other hand played more cohesively their system was built for the playoffs with them being a good half court team, that was the achilles heel of the Sonics.

The best 8th seed to pull of the 😢 upset. But they were the better team lofonso ellis 🔑 also robert pack fearless and of course motombo. Sonics put this team together a year ago still started learning to be a title contender. If this was a seven game series sonics would of found a way but it was a 5 game series. But hats off to the nuggets a team win

A big factor that caused the Sonics to lose the series was them being the worst rebounding team in the playoffs. If the Nuggets were able to exploit that more experienced teams definitely would've, that's why I believe the Rockets could've also beaten them they led the league in defensive rebounding. Plus Suns were the actual team to beat in the conference the Rockets were winning the West regardless after getting past them.

It was when the Rockets played at a similar pace of the Sonics with Drexler and they had Chucky Brown at PF they weren't able to win a game. In that sweep the Sonics outrebounded the Rockets on the defensive end by a wide margin, that wasn't happening if Thorpe was there the Rockets often outrebounded teams on that end with him.

The Sonics had a chance to close out the series in 4, but Kemp missed his FTs. And now they're in a do or die Game 5 facing the pressure of not wanting to become the first #1 to lose to a #8.
