Every time I watch his composure is astounding. First he loses a stick , then grabs a rod stick, so he chucks that , THEN FINALLY get a real stick to finish. All gasssed out to do another take. Like a REAL pro leaves the take. I have a saying, it’s perfect in its imperfections. Outstanding.
To anyone who would give this a "thumbs-down", I have a question - Is everything ok at home ? Would it help to speak with someone ?? lol! - Thanks for sharing this incredible performance by Todd
I was there..2006 & 2008..One of the greatest experiences of my life...Todd was very gracious to sign a drumhead for me in-between performances...He's a great ambassador for drumming
Todd put styx back on the map again. They could not have found a better drummer in my opinion. He really took their music to whole new level. He's like the modern day buddy rich of drummers. Fantastic.
Todd is great. A wonderful replacement for JP. And you're right, his playing has brought the band up to a different level. But I still have to give John his props. Without the Panozzo brothers, Styx would have never been...

He's almost turned them into a prog rock band with his phenomenal playing.
I am taking a 26 week online rock drumming course on Drumeo with Todd. All of the comments in this thread apply to him - genius talented, humble, great guy and a superb teacher. I cannot say enough great things about him.
He says he could do better, with the right sticks, but Todd you played it with power, precision and finesse that most can't do on their best day. Great job! If you said nothing in the beginning, I would only notice the stick change, that's it.
Having seen STYX live this past summer (an INCREDIBLE CONCERT, TOP 5 IN MY LIFE) and having listened and watched a lot of Todd's drumming, he has quickly become one of my favorite drummers! His approach to playing drums is to treat each drum as not just something to create a rhythm with, but as it's own musical instrument is very intelligent and spot on! Todd not only plays a GREAT rhythm driving each song, he musically adds so much in terms of accents, dynamics, etc. He's one of those drummers that makes a band better just because it's him behind the drum kit. It is quite easy to say that he and the guys from STYX are a perfect fit and I hope that they continue to record, tour and stay healthy for many more years!!!!!
@@jumpinjojo ~ Todd's underrated because most of the mainstream music world ignores him. They tout many of his contemporaries drumming talents all the time. But rarely mention Todd's name. The only reason he's being featured in these situations here is because he puts his self out there and gets noticed. Otherwise, no one except Styx fans would even know who he was...
Wouldn't call him underrated since he's been voted best prog rock drummer twice and best rock drummer once in Modern Drummer. Modern drummer is of course the top selling top rated drum magazine but he's also been rated number one drummer in the world by many other publications. He's also one of the few drummers in Spinal Tap to have survived.
Awesome player... a natural. Todd made a big deal about dropping the stick, then grabbing a hot rod by mistake. His "mistakes" sound better than my flawless moments! Go Todd!
Todd is certainly a top tier drummer, melodically, artistically and technically. I love that traditional grip he uses for most of the song. He's got a bit of Carl Palmer in him!
Forgive me, but it only has the traditional grip in common; for the rest it's the opposite: Todd is technique, precision, study and cleanliness, while Carl was all inventiveness, passion and, let's face it, even a little physical effort; Palmer was a forerunner at the time, while Sucherman is an excellent interpreter of modern drumming with a sovranatural left hand technique, but he is no innovator.
most balanced drummer on the planet...todd can play anything with mastery...studio, country , rock, pop, hard rock, prog rock, fusion, and even jazz...oh, funk...dude is a morph into any style with technique for years on end...
Just WOW. I’ve watched it a dozen times and he is effortless and soooooo solid .. I love his explosiveness and absolute control. . Sooo good. Can’t say enough. BTW what a great song ! Never heard it before great job.
If Todd switches to DW like so many other drummers have been doing in the last 2 years, I'll be heartbroken. Absolutely heartbroken. Please stay with Pearl Todd. Don't go to the dark side.
TS is my new favourite drummer ! I can’t believe I didn’t know anything about this guy for so many years.. every feel he plays I’m like yeah that’s exactly what I wanted to hear!! Tons of style and technic 🤘🏻👌🏻
My one live encounter with Mr. Sucherman was as the drummer for Brian Wilson's first tour as a solo artist. I had never heard his name before, but on a stage full of world class musicians, he stood out as the best player in the band. Stunning.
Todd must be one of the most solid, spot on, tasteful drummers today. Styx are lucky to have him. This guy could have his choice of who to play with. I admire how much class he has as a person!
This has to be the coolest thing on the internet.. It's his style, his approach, his dynamics, his precision, control and speed. I'd wager he is at the top of many peoples "Who I would like to play like the most" list, mine included. Dropped a stick sure, but who noticed..
just awesome. You'd be hard-pressed to notice either the stick drop or the mismatched stick if you were just listening or if he hadn't pointed it out. I can only dream of being so good.
The song reminded me very much...of something Kansas might have done as well. Wow! great job by this Giant of a Player! My new Fav! ( and doesn't hurt...that he openly admits that Steve Smith...was one of his biggest influences...as was Mine) This guy Has it All. Totally dig watching and listening to him Play. very few can Rival his broad, and comprehensive stylings.
U2WB....... Just go to his UA-cam channel and hang out with him/us there. He can't answer all your questions all the time but he does respond as he get's the chance to. He's answered a few of mine with graciousness. Just be cool and don't overwhelm the system....... he's a very busy guy but he's not a jerk. And yes as drummers go, he's all that and a bag of sticks too. So fun to watch and listen to.
So funny these kids can't tell the voice of Tommy Shaw....I grew up with STYX very underrated band Todd has brought them to a new level "but they were always a KILLER band" don't let Mr Roboto throw you they got rid of that DUDE
Alan Vaughan Dennis DeYoung was GREAT !! Really, buy or rent the DVD “ Return To Paradise, live dvd w DeYoung it’s great. ... I hate bands losing original members.
And thank goodness they did. I also grew up with Styx. Tommy Shaw and JY are the reasons they are still my favorite band today. Dennis was always my least favorite singer/songwriter during their A&M years. And I agree, Todd was an excellent replacement for JP. But in all fairness, if not for the Panozzo brothers, Styx would have never been. So I still have to give props to John, (hope he is resting in peace)...
Also grew up with Styx. This song could of been on Pieces of Eight, their last prog album. However, John Panozzo did not have the level of chops that Todd does.
@@IslandDigital Sorry Dennis DeYoung that was mean... Not Just a Drummer, but a True Musician. Bad Ass!
Excellent drummer! Standing ovation!
I never tire of watching this incredible performance. Todd is a true master musician.

What exactly is a hot-rod?
@@Scatterbrain70 I believe is the stick made up of a bunch of thin dows/rods that’s held together at each end. It’s for fat, sloppy playing.
It’s a stick made for lighter acoustic playing - perfect example is those nirvana and Alice In Chains unplugged albums from back in the day
