Dark Shadows Favorite Cast Members: Kathryn Leigh Scott and Jonathan Frid

- Learn more about the casting of Jonathan Frid as the vampire who was supposed to stay on the show for 13 weeks and ended up with mobs of fans coming to see him at events. Jonathan tells us how he portrayed Barnabas the man, not just the vampire. Kathryn Leigh Scott was a major cast member playing four different characters in Dark Shadows, including Josette and Josette's ghost. In her own words, Kathryn explains how the idea for a 20th anniversary book led to production of a number of books loved by fans.
With the release of Dark Shadows on videotape and DVD, MPI Video included a series of about 120 interviews that were recorded over a period of years. One of these 5-10 minute interviews would play at the end of each DVD. Those interviewed included Dan Curtis, the Creator/Executive Producer, as well as Directors, Cameramen, and many other crew members. There were also a number of interviews of some of our favorite cast members.
I found these interviews fascinating. As I viewed them, I found that themes emerged, likely because those being interviewed were asked the same questions. These themes included: how did you come to Dark Shadows, who were some of your favorite cast members (asked of production and crew members as well), what was it like to be a part of, and why do you think it lasted. Many other questions were geared to the person being interviewed that created some great content. These themes led me to the videos that I have put together. I have a long list so expect more to come. I call the series In Their Own Words because the people being interviewed are telling the whole story. There is the sadness that some of our favorite cast members: Joel Crothers, Grayson Hall, Thayer David, and Joan Bennett passed away before the series of interviews was started.

Kathryn Leigh Scott and Jonathan Frid were two of my most Favorite characters on the show. And, I loved their romantic relationship that appeared in different ways over the centuries. Very special imo.

@@danielcorreard3746 I believe you. Back in the early 90's I bought her first Dark Shadows book, from her by mail. Somehow, I guess I over paid and when it arrived, there was also a check for about 1.40 signed by Kathryn Leigh Scott along with it. I never cashed that check.... It's a favorite possession of mine.
@@Muertes-tf2oj back in 1999 I went to a ds festival in nyc and someone robbed her intentionally knocked something over and when she bent down to pick it up they stole her cash box I was part of a posse that searched for the guy but after all was said and done she got on stage and told everyone who paid with credit cards to see her so she could help make sure nothng happened to them I will tell you a nicer person never lived.

I appreciate all of the ladies from Dark Shadows, but I have to say that Kathryn Leigh Scott is my favorite. I adored Barnabas too, but I had such an incredible crush on Quentin. :)

Kathryn Leigh Scott as Maggie Evans was the prettiest of several pretty girls on the show.
Everybody has a different opinion of who was the prettiest. My favorite was Lara Parker. Everybody has their own choice.

I loved her as the good ghost Josette, especially when she became David's guardian spirit, protecting him from the evil Laura Murdoch (Diana Millay, playing the human phoenix, Laura Murdoch.) But I also liked her as Maggie Evans, Rachel Drummond, etc...She was sure a cutie-pie. But I've got to say that I loved the evil schemes of Angelique! I would rush home from school each day, a love-smitten seventeen-year-old boy, could hardly wait to see Angelique's large eyes in that beautiful face, as she was weaving another evil spell on somebody! Her torment of Barnabas Collins was especially exquisite, I always wished she'd bite me on the neck!! Still, she did murder through witchcraft the beautiful Josette. That was awful.

When I was a kid I had a crush on JOSETTE DuPRES (KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT), she was so elegant and beautiful--- as an adult, my opinion of Ms.Scott has not changed!
I recall visiting my grandparents and walking over to my aunt's house. We were talking and then she suddenly shifted gears to watch TV. She said, 'Have you ever watched 'Dark Shadows'?'
I had not. So we watched. She was already hooked. I became hooked.
What an amazing cast! Everyone seems so nice and pleasant. Please don’t tell me there were bad apples in the ensemble.
Everything that I read and hear from the cast and crew members is that they were a very close cast and enjoyed spending time together on their off time. There were also comments that the building that they used for filming starting in season 2 was just Dark Shadows which meant that they had a closenss.
Kathryn Leigh Scott was the most beautiful actress on Dark Shawards.
Kathryn was 'one of' the prettiest, there were many 'beautiful' actresses ie. Alexandra Moltke as Victoria , Lara Parker as Angelique, Marie Wallace as Eve and Megan, lovely lovely Nancy Barrett and Kate Jackson.

Came to the Dark Shadows party late. I was 7 when it ended. I'm on Collection 16, with Barnabas, Angelique and Quentin triangle. Nice to see Jonathan without Barnabas make up. Next stop is Dick Cavette and Jonathan interview. I hope it's on UA-cam. A thanks to Kathryn keeping the Party going!
I never understood Frid being a heart throb then. He was much more handsome later in life. Kathryn Leigh Scott became the true mistress of Collinwood -- Dark Shadows was her life's career way after the series ended. I loved her original tomboy Maggie. When she became the damsel in distress, she lost some of her rawness. Great to see Mitchell Ryan briefly in this video. I believe his alcoholism ousted him from the series.

what a shame that the brief video of seeing Jonathan speak in his own words, is so poorly shot - with half his face in shadow and with such a hideous background color for him. Videos of Jonathan interviews are literally priceless, so it is a terrible to have one that is almost unbearable to watch because 1 lighting person and whoever shot that interview didn't know what in blazes they were doing!
Well since he's gone now, I see the video as a 'rarity' just like so many original Dark Shadows episodes had technical difficulties, and are considered 'rare' and just appreciate that they even exist in the first place.
@@thejupiter2574 yes, and it's a shame that such a rarity is so poorly done. At the time this video was made, it was well known what a star Jonathan had become on DS and that an interview like this was invaluable. And they couldn't bother to shoot it properly with better quality??? There's no excuse for that and they cannot be compared to the DS bloopers which were mostly spontaneous - this was a planned interview! Imagine shooting any major celebrity so poorly?? It's unthinkable
@@mariannedinapoli1467 True his role as Barnabas made him famous, after that what? 2 movie rolls that were almost an embarrassment, a deaf mute in a made for tv movie and Seizure , director Oliver Stone tried to forget. He enjoyed his other endeavors so that's all that mattered.
Sadly, Lara Parker died last October 12, 2023, within two weeks of her birthday.

They are not my favorites by any stretch of the imagination. There were other actors on the show too. I wish people would remember that. I was never a big Barnabas fan or a big Maggie/Josette fan either. Now if there were something about Humbert Allen Astredo I would be happier but he was reclusive so there is little to find about him. I just wish people didn't always assume every DS fan was {or is} a fan of JF or any of the other main actors on the show. He was a fine actor but to me he was the actor who played Barnabas and that was pretty much that. I wouldn't have joined a fan club of his or anything.
