Patek Philippe’s Nautilus is OVERRATED: Here’s Proof from MB+F

- What’s really important to the watch market? Tradition and name - or innovation?
The MB&F LM Perpetual Calendar and Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700 are two examples of the polar ends of the watch market’s division.
#watchreview #patekphilippe #vintagewatch
In today's episode, Gabe (our Lange collector friend) shows us his Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700 and the MB&F LM Perpetual Calendar in titanium. The 3700 is the original Nautilus, a time only with no seconds hand and a date. It is powered by a 3rd party movement, rather than an in-house Patek movement as you'd see today.
The MB&F, by contrast, is hardly the hype machine the Nautilus is. It's the first perpetual calendar of its kind, with a nearly unbreakable design wherein everything can be set independently. Essentially, the watch is really two watches in one, where the time and calendar as functionally separate pieces of horological technology. - Навчання та стиль
Spot on analysis from a seasoned collector, awesome.
Nice job as always guys. I enjoyed listening to Gabe’s perspective. He’s very knowledgeable, especially for a younger collector.
There's something for everyone. You don't have to like either design to appreciate the either watch in its own category. The extreme of complexity to Bauhaus simplicity was interesting to see back-to-back. I liked Gabe's commentary on the "why" of the watch and the collector community. I will say, thought it is not necessary for a watch to be accurate (due to our time access these days) it does need to actually serve its' function WELL and do so elegantly. To have a watch that has terrible accuracy or does not present its purpose well is a failure to achieve 90 percent of the artistry and engineering skill that encompasses watchmaking. Nice video, keep the collection going Gabe!!!! Fantastic as always!!! Show a Kari next time ;-)
Loved this episode. This guy clearly loves these pieces for all the right reasons. He's a great example of someone who collects what they like, not what the Instagram "influencers" will tell you to like.
This guy should get the Citizen 0100 in white gold. Most accurate wristwatch to 1 second a year. An incredible feat of engineering.
Great video Christian and Anna!
Well done, please keep it up 🙏
I just love Mr Gabriel Benador's collection of small independents! It's sad that many mainstream collectors seem unable to at least appreciate small, haute de gamme, artisanal craft and art time pieces. The star of this show was also Mr Banadors A Lange & Soehne Pour Le Merite Tourbillon but at least I am able to appreciate the art of Max Büssner
The star for me, of this episode was Mr Gabriel Benador's A Lange & Söhne Pour Le Merite Tourbillon shown for a few seconds. The MB&F is an fantastic piece of
Nice review but i hate the design on both these watches.
I can appreciate the engineering that goes into them but they are hideous.
Great job on the video. I see your point about the two. To me like the other one better because the l call it the skeleton or I call it you can see everything about this watch to me it looks better then the Patik Felipe one. What is the price on the patik Felipe compared to the other one.
" Hype based vs intellectually based" is an arguably fair way to describe the vintage PP Nautilus vs MB&F. This is the same argument to explain the popularity of some vintage Ferrari's vs the market sentiment of a new Rolls Royce Phantom.
Gabe is right to say luxury watches are " all hype".. I feel that these items exist thankfully because there are many consumers out there that have the discerning taste, appreciation, & the means to keep this market alive & well.
Thanks for the video.
I think the mechanical marvels are going to outlast the simple steel luxury sports watches. The mechanicals are objectively rare, amazing quality and great engineering, while we have just decided the steel sports watches are cool and desirable.
Excellent video. Thank you for posting.
Nice conversation, thanx! 👍
nice review.. both super nice watches, but Nautilus is too expensive. I prefer the MB&F to be honest, but the LM is my favourite MB&F.
Great video. I love the insights of other people. Keep on making videos.
The Ludwig Oechslin perpetual calendar for Ulysse Nardin had already solved that issue in 1996!
Wonderful video!
Love the 3700, as 5711 owner i like the 3700 more tbh.
the 12 markers on the nautilus arent properly symmetrical
Its a visual issue, they are.
Yea it is misaligned but it is actually a somewhat common issue with the nautilus surprisingly especially on older models.
@@jlin5459 Wow, that's interesting. So much for the argument about aesthetically pleasing looks, higher craftsmanship and superior finishing on these legendary pieces. I'm done with it.
@@gmshadowtraders yes it's surprising but if you look at some hodinkee talking watches, some with 3700s have misaligned 12, and even my 5711 is slightly misaligned. It's weird something that level would have misalignment issues
It's a Patek Philippines.
That was great and educational. Thanks
Those pillows???
Why is he shaking like that? I'm not sure if that's a nervous twitch, or if that's early signs of Parkinson's. But if it's the latter then you need to go on a ketogenic diet ASAP. And eat one spoon full of coconut oil with every meal. After two weeks those shakes will stop.
Great video, don’t know if I intellectualize the hobby as much as you, but I share your methodology to an extent, I enjoy Rolex, and Vintage Rolex, while I also collect Lange and Journe. Great watches all around.
This guy is 100% correct
I usually would be interested in these type of videos but I felt the person narrating was ... eh.... I was missing that flair from a certain someone.
Eh, he's not a youtube personality, he's a big time collector. Guy has some SERIOUS pieces.
It’s just about marketing tho witch rolex,AP,Patek, hublot are masters in it😢
Very smart dude, highly inteligent.
The date window of the Nautilus is horrible, reason enough not to buy one. The MB&f is an absolute grail piece for me. Insane in every way and incredibly beautiful
Yeah its all about variety. They are both the best in their field.
Technology is great, but if it doesn't look good and it's huge, what's the point?
Freshhhh
😴😴😴😴😴 at 10:24 is that a fly on the watch
So you don't wear a watch 2 till time maybe he can't see the time because it's so dirty🤪
Was he seated in a yoga ball?
😂😂😂
LOL i thought he was riding a horse
The problem is that watch although complicated is ugly as sin and totally not practical to wear day to day. It’s more about the engineering which is understand people isn’t much of a selling point when it comes to watches.
I love both but for the money mb&F is definitely better value
0:07 .....Ferrari?
Hahaha, “why don’t you make a pretty case with a good name” (AKA Richard Mille)
That’s one fugly over priced underprivileged pf watch - it’s a marketing success but a pig of a watch . I’m sorry I love pf like the rest of us but the MB&F would get my money between those two
No one buying a Nautilus at today's prices is buying it for its horological or product value. They're buying for the flash and flex.
The MB&F is just unwearable; there’s no setting wear it belongs other than on a bedside table, not to be worn but to be stared at. No thanks; I’d like something I could wear and with no superfluous complications.
I’m not saying I don’t like that engineering wonder; but it’s a museum piece lacking the discreetness of an everyday watch.
The divide is that one is classic and one is hideous, if I’m being completely frank and honest
IDK, he couldn't have picked two more disparate examples while still ignoring their market targets. It's true though the MB&F is underrated as an art-piece, it's over elaborated as apposed to the Nautilus slower burn practicality not on a budget, but still...
Rolex Daytona is the Most Important watch in the world!!
more important history and the most expensive watch ever sold Paul Newman Daytona
Hue Man a silly person that never owned one talks like that
It became the most expensive watch in "auction" because of the previous owner name attached to it. Remove Paul Newman's name in the watch, it is just another vintage daytona
Some Rolex AD was trying to shift the ugliest, least popular watch in the shop and Joanne Woodward walked in...
4:53 "I don't love the way they're finished..." and then he gets cut off and continues saying something. Curious as to what he followed up with! Awesome video. This guy obviously has an insane collection as seen in other videos as well. However compared to other people I've seen with insane collections, his knowledge and passion is right on point. There is some great insight here, more people should watch this.
He’s talking about other LM’s that have flat as opposed to rounded arms connecting the balance wheel!
Nautilus is great watch but wayyyyyy overpriced.
But that is fact put on the market even more expensive nautilus and people will buy...
Nautilus is a great watch. The problem here is that people tends to believe the hype being put on the watch.
Nautilus vs mb&f , you clowns
Little bit boring this episode 😅
When are we gonna review seikos and Hamiltons? Tired of these ultra expensive watches.
Rolex all the way
The Nautilus is THE most important watch in the world. The MB+F is meaningless and unimportant. That's the difference.
Roy Batty what makes the Nautilus important and the mb&f meaningless?
@@Armoer Because Patek is the most cultured and exclusive watch brand in the world. The Nautilus is their beach to boardroom model and can do anything with class and elegance. The MB+F simply does not have that pedigree. It is completely unremarkable when compared to Patek.
Lmao
No, Rolex Daytona is the Most Important watch in the world!!
more important history and the most expensive watch ever sold Paul Newman Daytona
@@The_real_Mr_Ghost I can see that position. Certainly both Daytona and Nautilus are more important and meaningful than some silly MB whatever it is...
