- Join Visual Effects Supervisor, Richard Bluff, as he shares a peek behind the curtain of the effects of The Mandalorian: Season 2, winner of 7 Emmy® Awards including Special Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Cinematography, Prosthetic Makeup, Stunt Coordination, Stunt Performance, and Music Composition.
For its sophomore outing, Lucasfilm’s hit Disney+ series built upon the groundbreaking technical and artistic achievements accomplished during season one, combining traditional methodologies, with ever-advancing new technologies. The team also increased the physical size of the ILM StageCraft LED Volume which would again be used for over half of all scenes. This season also marked the debut of ILM’s state-of-the-art real-time cinema render engine called, Helios. The high-resolution, high-fidelity engine was used for all final pixel rendering displayed on the LED screens and offers unmatched performance for the types of complex scenes prevalent in today’s episodic and feature film production.
Practical creature effects have been a vital part of the aesthetic and charm of the Star Wars universe since 1977, and for season two, the effects team realized over 100 puppeteered creatures, droids, and animatronic masks, which included the beloved Tatooine Bantha, realized as a ten foot-high puppeteered rideable creature.
Practical miniatures and motion control photography were used once again for scale model ships, as well as miniature set extensions built for use in ILM’s StageCraft LED volume. Stop motion animation was also utilized for the Scrap Walker at the Karthon Chop Fields. The greater krayt dragon on Tatooine was realized as a six-hundred-foot computer-generated creature that would swim shark-like through the sand environment by way of a liquefaction effect, wherein the sand would behave like water.

The fact that the ENTIRE jungle was recreated digitally blew my mind. Also, I love that you can use things like a practical set extension built at scale, and also the stop-motion rig in the background for the scrapyard. Getting to stitch together all of the technologies and craftsmanship is what I appreciate most about all of this work, and I am so glad you share those things in videos like this when you can!

I think people are missing the amazing part which is the blend of CGI, stop motion and in camera effects. Each on their own is cool as hell but the blend is just genius given the end results. Mind blowing.

I will never forget watching mando's ship get picked up by that robot and the water sim, absolutely blew my mind and when I checked twitter everyone was losing their minds over the exact same thing

I love how they went back to using practical effects again in star wars! The mix of practical and special effects that started in the Mandolorian has mad star wars look so realistic!
For a simple man such as myself, the advancements from a New Hope to the Mandalorian is simply amazing.
The Mandalorian is the best possible outcome fans could have wanted from a debut live action SW show. The work these wizards produce stands shoulder to shoulder with the legacy laid down by the legendary sfx giants that founded ILM. Awesome to see miniature and stop motion work still being produced.
This is why the Mandalorian feels like Star Wars: Using the same filming techniques in the original trilogy!
Actually The Mandalorian is filmed more like Star wars Prequels.
We've entered an interesting point in VFX; Simple things like the Tuskens being sprayed by liquid which many would assume are real, are infact full CG and many exterior sets you'd expect to be full CG are Unreal engine on the practical volume set being capture in-camera. It's like a magic trick that keeps you guessing.

As far as I’m aware, for StageCraft 2.0 ILM now only uses their in-house engine Helios, which was purpose built, and no longer Unreal engine.

Yes only Unreal for previz, rendering is done in Helios and RenderMan.
I don't think anyone other than vfx artists watch this, so u don't really need to tell about obviously cg environment, simulation etc., just a tip.

This series has the most impressive CGI/VFX I have ever seen.
Still can't believe this is a series. These kind of visual effects were only possible for huge blockbusters before.
It has better effects than blockbusters. MCU fugly CGI or VFX looks like PC game compared to the effects in Mando.

It’s better CGI physics than most of the movies have with actual visual respect for the established Star Wars universe and canon, too, it blows me away that anyone can still manage this level of artistic integrity post 2010, if only we could have it for Trek and Who I’d be a very happy old man.

Very pleased to see the Krayt Dragon followed the 6 leg original design. Wish we could see its entire body in camera! But also, the practical stuff is incredible!
I love everything about this series, so much love and care brought to all aspects of the production and writing.
I wish it was released on DVD & Blueray too than just streaming. We physical Star Wars collectors SHOULD have it on DVD &/or Blu-ray to our movie collections too.

I love visually the Mandalorian, we are back to the creativity. I think the weakness of "Starwars Disney" is sometimes the scenario.
Amazing work. I love the detail with Slave I's hatch mechanically functioning with a 2 piece hinge door from the ceiling that greets the rising ramp to get that iconic look from the outside. 2:37

The part where it mentioned they actually used stop motion animation blew my mind.

There is an hour long behind the scenes...on Disney+. Unless that's just for the first season.
@@JodianWarrior There are 2 episodes for season 2 now, on Disney+, but they are not ILM VFX breakdowns. They are behind the scenes with the actors, directors etc. There is a little bit on the VFX of course, but not quite the same style as this type of video.
They did a longer one for season 1

The amount of physical things pulled off on a serialized project schedule like this blows my mind. Obviously the same could be said for the full digital environments! The coordination between who-makes-what has got to be impressive. Oh to be a fly on the wall in those production meetings... lol
The stop motion animation bit is beautiful. And it looks much smoother compared to the original trilogy animations. Makes me curious what have been improved in that area of tech. That's some top tier, tip-of-the-hat to Star Wars for it to be so far in the background. The love and dedication to quality from ILM is unprecedented.
They can digitally add blur objects - and the distinct lack of matte lines from digital compositing makes everything look better.
Stop motion animation can now be made smoother using frame interpolation AI.

No, I don't think so. Besides the jungle one, I can tell in all the others all the CGI. It's like Marvel movies. They have some great GCI things but they are very obvious.

OH come on. Just because the movies were bad, the FX in them were still some of the best in the industry, as Star Wars has always been.
The visual effect in the sequels are the best part of them.

The Mandalorian, the best Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back. And its not released on DVD &/or Blueray for us physical movie & tv-show collectors. I hate it. Yes, streaming can be good but i dont wanna pay everytime i wanna see a movie or tv-show. I agree with Scotts dad in South Park that streaming-services are ruining our culture (even though Scott has some points too), I dont want physical media to die out! Netflix & Hulu released some of their movies & tv-shows on DVD, so i think Disney/Disney+ SHOULD DO the same thing with The Mandalorian, Loki & the rest of the Disney+ tv-shows too.
