The effects in this movie were amazing! I loved how they blended practical effects and CGI so seamlessly!
See: every major fx film.
"How is Jakku different from Tatooine?"
Patrick Tubach: *explains how they're the same place*
I could basically watch stuff like this for hours on end. Love hearing guys get into the nitty gritty of how stuff works - wouldn't mind even more of that.
+Alberto Roldan we love making these videos!
+Alberto Roldan totally with you, mate. Best thing about films are the behind the scenes. :D
+Alberto Roldan That's right. These are so interesting
+Alberto Roldan I can't wait for the Blu Ray. I hope it has a lot of "boring" stuff. :)
+Alberto Roldan Same! I love watching stuff about how they made and what they did to film the movie.
Although I'm a huge fan of Mad Max, I do believe these guys deserve the Oscar. They blended so many different methods into a seamless, believable visual landscape. Can't ask for anything more.
+Michael E. Berg (SIC Films)
Yes. The competition for best visual effect is pretty exciting this year. Even with ex machina and the revenant they did a great job.
Wow, it's actually the complete opposite for me. I am a huge fan of Star Wars, but I believe that Mad Max deserves the Oscar.
+Michael E. Berg (SIC Films) no. Mad Max was 1000 times better than this lame shit.
Oh, so this VFX is shit to you?
I heard the practical effects on this movie were so emphasized, that they filmed a battle happening on a planet light years from us, and we had to wait to get the footage because it took a decade for all the light to travel here.
+BoilingHotCoffee Truth right here
So awesome the way they had all these practical effects that were created on a computer.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Perfect combination of CGI and practical effects
This is great. I really get the sense of effort and care they took with these effects. Great interview.
Special effects were the key to all this.
Actually, I'm the key to all this.
william dechant Sigh was.. :,(
I'm still finding out about amazing special effects that I didn't know were practical. Amazing.
Not dissing the CG stuff, that's amazing too. But wow, I had no idea her speeder bike was an actual ridable machine
Or the robot infront of Maz's castle....
Lets Paint I'm pretty sure that's CG
***** ...my life.
Maybe if they'd released actual information on the original Blu Ray instead of waiting a year to release an _actual_ Blu Ray with actual features... lol
Seeing scenes I thought were a mix of practical and cgi and finding out they're were a complete digital rendering was amazing!
+DuhAverageJoe Agreed, and I call BS on the person who posted above u about he could tell each time something was CGI
Thanks for this video! This is AMAZING!
They deserve the oscar!!!
They should of won that oscar
+sparky10142 Should HAVE* not Should of - Come on this is like 1st grade grammar.
Javier Chacon cut me some slack, I have dyslexia
Absolutely loved it!!!
16k,32k texture resolution :o?
This was awesome!
this made me open after effects and learn it!
This video is cool but I can't realise anything about proportions since everything is in imperial :(
4:27
IMO This would look like Hoth if you add a sky and snow texture XD
Very cool Vid, Hopefully you can do a video for the next Star Wars film as well!
Should've just adapted Dark Empire with New Jedi Order novels. Jace Solo starts as Darth Caedus, Jaina Solo as a Padawan thanks to Luke. Han a drill sergeant-type for new recruits, Leia in charge of the New Republic at Yavin 4.
Admiral Thwarn would've lead the storm troopers corps against the New Republic. Mara Jade hunting down Luke and his New Order. That's what I would've done.
"How is Jakku different from Tatooine?"
Correct answer: It's not.
Kylo Ren's ship looks so awesome!! Can't wait for the Blu Ray release.
+FocusReborn They should call it the "Blu-Rey Edition" just for bants
The fact that they paid more attention to character performance is a major reason why this film worked so much more than episodes 1-3.
Re: Millenium Falcon chase -
Check the best ever aerial chase sequence in Capricorn One
The only thing I didn't like about the effects was how they just threw the Falcon around and made it crash through stuff without taking any damage, it was practically invincible. It took away from the realism.
+ShootEvrythg that bugged me too, but maybe the sand isn t so hard and the second time it lands on snow, but the trees should have at least scratched something.
But also remember how many countless times it was shot by TIE fighters in the originals, without sustaining any damage. It's pretty tough.
+Actium Films The Falcon has deflector shields that protect it from laser blasts. Totally different from dragging its ass all over Jakku and smashing through a dozen trees and crash landing on Star Killer Base.
+ShootEvrythg There is snow
Actium Films being shot by plasma bolts and crashing its entire structure on a hard surface are two very different things.
you know the music playing in the background is rey's theme from star wars.
I wish Dennis Muren had more involvement there.
If they only incorporated those "flak bursts" and "near shields impacts" as the old Star Wars movies had, it would felt more like true and a part of a SW family movie... from the visual identity point of view of course.
which thing is used to make this?
Maz looks like she could be a sage from jak and daxter
Amazing but you knew that
The effects were seamless in the telling of the story. Fantastic job. However...I must say that the most disappointing element is actually the Millennium Falcon which absolutely looks CGI.
9:08 They showed a clip from The Last Jedi, oops?
That's from TFA
WHy the fuck does these guys dosent work with models anymore?
6:47 Damn Maz is thicc
It gets on my nerves. The practical effects were the second biggest selling point of this movie (after the returning cast), and all they gave us was a few puppets. There were no miniature ships, no miniature locations, not a single matte painting, and even the few practical effects in the movie are so digitally touched-up that they may as well have not bothered. All in all it was more digital than the Prequels were...
I actually did like this movie. I did not like Starkiller Base, however, because I feel like it they could have done something better.
The Podrace shits on everything from TFA and TLJ in terms of effects.
Wow I thought that BB8 was completely cgi...
And... the lightsaber effects?
The lightsabers were actually colored and the fight scenes showed their glows.
Ok
+Alejandro Garcia i hope there are behind the scene scenes of that on the dvd
+RF NDC D C'mon, that's probably the most boring effect of all of them. It's literally a pen cutout in after effects.
The only problem i have about VFX in this movie how overly blue the colour corrections are in the entire movie... it pretty much ruined the Star Wars feel of it
Disney, why didn't you just use actors and makeup and prothetics? Why do you use cgi and motion capture to create aliens? In the original trilogy, many aliens were actors with make up and prosthetics. That gave it a unique feel. If you did the same for episode 7 and 8 and 9, it would look just like the original trilogy.
Maz makes me think of Rosa Parks
sorry but i didn't feel all that stuff was happening. Instead I could point out each time something was CGI, done on green screen etc.
I hate that shriveled tangerine Maz!
The snow speeders searching for Han and Luke - models, blue screen on a white background and the speeder bike chase steadicam, puppets and live action models with a moving camera. These two sequences are the gold standard in model blue screen composite work and now we laugh at what a shambles the prequel trilogy became. There is no school like the old school.
pity they never spent so much effort on the story
CGI of Maz Kanata sucked.
Yeah it took me out of it for a sec.
The tech is fantastic, but without a solid story characters and great dialog you have nothing. The force awakens was yet another impressive show of tech but its story was rather lame. A poor copy of the original with little originality. Casting is key and i think they did a good job excluding the a character or two.
Disagree, the problem nowadays is that we come in with high expectations for these reboots and sequels. The story was more solid to me than episode IV and while the characters were beautifully balanced. But most importantly the movie felt like it belong in the canon unlike its prequel predecessors.
The characters were the focus and the best thing about this movie
The only problems i have with the film is that i felt Maz could have been practical cause she reminds me of the prequels, eww, so they could have mixed practical with the cg, and smoke could have been a guy it make up, cause his face really wasn't that deformed, and i could also do with out the cg rather scene with these tentacle things!
+OzzyOzWald Deal with it!
+OzzyOzWald +Bailey -99 +Stefan Sings Swing
He expressed an opinion, I actually agree tbh. It reminded me slightly of the prequels like Jar-Jar fucking Binks. Some of it looked good and other bits left me unconvinced.
***** I still enjoyed the film to death!!!!
+Stefan Sings Swing ok then!
+Stefan Sings Swing lmao you can't be serious, they were largely shite. Must be trolling.
There was some bad cgi vfx in the movie. Maz Kanata is a terrible design. Just because you morph the actresse's face into an aliens face, doesnt make it special or better. As if we're supposed to see a resemblance? The falcon looked fake the whole time it was flying and crashing around. BB8 was the best thing about the movie. i enjoyed the movie and this video. I think the movie lacked soul though, and the eye can detect cgi- so for Abrams to lead everyone to believe that we'd get practical fx and models was a fail on his part.
? the eye can detect cgi? woot? I'm telling ya if you took a Victorian say and showed them this and told them we made this docientary they would probably have no idea it was fake! we are so used to cgi now we nitpick to try and find it!
+rxz4140 I think most people totally disagree with you.
Wow. Just wow. I thought this was like , the best CGI of 2015. IMO, everything in the movie felt life like and real.
Jar Jar Binks ikr I bet if people didn't know what cgi was they would think that the movie was nearly all real!!
this guys dont even know how to shade in a 3d program like maya, blender.... all the credits go to de developers in 3d programs not only for this 2 guys....
