I'm on a 1 Trillion kilometer journey, and yet I'm still stuck right here going nowhere. Thanks, Paul! You've got me feeling better about life, the universe, and everything!

The section on absolute reference frames was exactly what I was wondering, thanks for addressing it in depth!

I always wondered how fast we *actually* move through the universe and how close or far away we are from light speed. You covered all questions and doubts that I had about this topic very clearly. Thank you so much for making this video!

Well done! Slight corrections: For the orbit around the sun, about a billion km/yr is correct. However, the shortcut “pi million” seconds in a year is incorrect. There are about pi*(ten million) seconds in a year.

And we don't even get jetlag. Although for the first hour or two after I get up in the morning my bodies check engine light is on. It requires several applications of my coffee to silence all the alarms. Coffee that won the engine block de-greaser contest three years in a row.

If all matter was deleted from the universe except for earth, but we maintained our current trajectory, it seems like we would cease to move

@@wcsxwcsx and I suppose if space didn't have an edge, or a stopping point, then arguably we wouldn't be moving at all since there aren't any external objects to compare our speed to. Oh my brain is hurting lol

A sort of unknown as the Earth is going around the Sun, the Sun around the Galactic Core, the Milky Way might be going around something and last but not least if there's a Multiverse what is the Universe going around?

this is an arbitrary question, since velocity is a RELATIVE property. It's funny how people just ignore this because all the equations have this term hidden. when we say velocity or distance there is a hidden reference point. (you can get into an "absolute space" argument but its pretty clear imo that there is not an absolute space). So no we don't travel that far, we travel that far IN REFERENCE TO xyz. The earth is the usual reference point but you are mearly changing that to say we moved further, nonsensical.

Hugh, 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m stuck in traffic, seemingly going nowhere. This great explanation isn’t helping my state of mind at all 😂

One quite unhelpful thing all of you science popularizers do is length measures in space. Kilometers and miles are quite useless when describing distances in space. Even the moon is too far for them to mean anything. Light seconds, minutes, hours, etc. are much more descriptive.
