Making a Fretless Custom Spring Bass - full build

- This bass was planned since last year and we finally shipped it to customer a week ago. He saw a head-stock that he liked from Dan Thompson from "Guns and guitars" so we gave our twist on the concept. The bass is 4 string frettless made from ash, maple, oak and ebony. Thumb-rest and fret-board are made from black ebony, wings from ash, and neck from maple. We blackened the oak veneer by cooking it in white vinegar with steel wool. Veneer was used to make electronics cover as well as thin lines throughout the neck and body. Markings on the fret-board are filled with epoxy resin mixed with white pigment and maple dust. Nut is made from bone. We used pvac glue for all the glue-ups on this project, "patex" for the body and neck and "titebond" for joining finger-board to neck. Truss-rod is a custom made for this bass, I didn't film it because it is the same for every guitar project we have done so far so if you are interested please check any of previous guitar videos :) After machining, bass was sanded with progressively finer sandpaper and 6 coats of polyurethane varnish were applied. First four primer coats were applied to fill all the pores and then after couple of weeks, two hard top coats were applied. in between each coat, the whole bass was sanded with 400 grit sandpaper. After last coat, everything is polished with 3 different paste grits. Fingerboard and thumb rest is oiled with "timberguard" teak oil. Hardware that we used in this build is: Schaller Da Vinchi Bass tuners, 3D-4 bridge, S-locks strap buttons. D'Addario ETW92 strings. for electronics we used SJCSX neck and 35TWX bridge pickups combined with BQC control and ABC active balance control from EMG. Total weight of this bass is 3.8kg. I hope you like the build! :D

As a carpenter and a bass player this is UA-cam heaven for me!
IKR?
:D Thank you !
Just wondering, have you made a bass yourself? Cause man this looks fun to build!
@@sirgallabad Ha! If only I had the time! My days are taken up with furniture and kitchens....
Maybe when I retire!

The dream of playing this Bass is now more important than winning a Grammy
Always impressed with the diversity of the skills at Lignum - guitars, to chairs, to *massive* geometric glulam roofs!
Feels like it's never a dull moment in the workshop.
Never boring😉 glad you like the work!
Props for giving Dan a nod for his headstock design! Love your work.
Borrowing it myself for an EUB I'll be doing.
I keep coming back to this video. Possibly the most beaitiful basses that o have ever seen!
I really like what you guys did with the fret markings. Having the marks on the top of the board and then again along the bottom of the face minimizes the parallax problem with marks only on the top, but still keeps the elegant look of an unlined board. 👍🏻
Thank you very much Mike. It was a bit tricky positioning it correctly and took a few tries to get it exactly right but I think it was worth it..
If I wanted the same could u tell me how much only 4 maybe 2 types of wood? April 28, 2023
This is the most fantastic bass build I've seen on youtube yet!
I've watched a lot of guitar builds on UA-cam and this is easily, easily the best one hands down. Amazing work everyone involved 👍
Wow, thanks! That means a lot to me!
So, at first... I was thinking, “I can’t support this video. These guys are doing it all by CNC.”.
Then, I kept watching and saw they got their hands PLENTY DIRTY, so I reevaluated my perspective. Then, I had noticed this symbiotic balance between the hands on and the strategic use of the CNC. The finished bass is BEAUTIFUL!!! Really excellent job you’ve done.
I think if anything, this video has forced me to admit to myself that I am seriously jealous of people with that kind of ability and access to that kind of equipment. RESPECT!!!
Me at the beginning of the video: "I don't like that headstock". Me at the end of the video: "I freakin' love that headstock!". As a bassist, I want that bass. As a woodworker, I have so many questions about your process.
Why does anyone care if you do or don’t like the headstock?
@@TomEarley just a funny story. Why should anyone care about your troll post?
@@McThumpenstein no one should care about my comment on your post, I'm no one. Your post is neither "funny" nor a "story", just saying.
@@TomEarley it is funny that to become a troll you need to sacrifice your personality and become no one.
@@yourmeister what?
❤❤❤ the design of the headstock is very smart and courageous with multiple advantages. Well done. ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍💋💋💋🔝🔝🔝
This isn't just a bass, it's a finely crafted work of art
The headstock really looks like the one of Dan Thompson’s GGBO-build last year
It is. It’s in the description said it was inspired by the Dan’ s built
These timelapses of the Kukas at work are something else!
I'm a fan myself 😉
@@lignumchannel Can we have more, pretty please?

Thank jou JT
I always take something to learn for my own builds from your videos - great work!
Glad you like them! Thank you:)
It is extremely rare to see а craftsmanship with such fine and detailed precision to every detail of this highly aesthetic piece.
I would recommend making a second part of this video with the use of the bass guitar in different styles and how it sounds on each of the pickups during a live performance and on record (solo and in the mix, of course).
Dudes, you are the top! I wish you the best of luck on your next endeavor.
It's been an extreme pleasure watching all this dedication bubbling up from you as you work.
Cheers,
Wess
Wow! This is so wonderful fretless bass. I am a bass player and hoping to have like this. Thanks for sharing your beautiful video.
All of that incredibly astonishing amazing state-of-the-art work for NO SLAP AT THE END. Dissapointing.
Thank God there was no slapping. If you want to play a banjo, buy one...
