  • Repairing a chain oil leak from behind the exhaust on a Stihl 023 that causes lots of smoke and excess oil consumption. The oil gallery plug is not available as a Stihl spare, so you have to make one..

    Hi, Andy. I have restored an 025 and an 024, recently. I am restoring an 021 right now. My MS 260 Pro and 026 Pro are doing fine. Have never seen an 023 but I know the 025, 023 and 921 are in the same family of parts and the 024, 026 and 028 are in the same family. I cannot move bars between the two families, because the 024, 026 and 028 have large mouth Stihl bars and the other family has the small mouth bar, but within each family most of the parts are interchangeable. You can add the MS 250 to the 025 family and the MS 260 to the 026 family. The only oddball is the 024 which utilizes different size fuel lines than the 026 and MS 260. It did surprise me that the 021 uses the same fuel line as the 025 and MS 250. I put all new rubber parts on the saws that I rebuilt. The 025 got new bearings and seals, too. I updated my 025, 026, 024 and MS 260 to adjustable oil pumps and carbs.the 026 and 260 got new deco cylinders, too.

    Sthil corrected the problem and or a sub part.Think it is called a grub screw that goes in that hole without blocking hole.My question is this, I have a ms250.In that hole was a black plug rubber like round top.Looks like it was glued in factory.I had it just fall out.Shorely factory just did not glue a plug in the hole.The saw was brought used.

    • @TheInfoworks
      @TheInfoworks  5 років тому +1

      Hi, in my opinion this plug is a way of blocking up the junction of two straight oil feed galleries and also some form on one shot pressure release system to protect the oil pump drive from the excess oil pressure when the oil hole in the bar is blocked. Subscribed and seen the 023 total rebuild series? Cheers

    • @joesphbaumgardner4579
      @joesphbaumgardner4579 5 років тому

      I agree, the plug would be there for that.Yes, I have watched some rebuild videos of 023 and 250 so on.My 250 has the issue of no oil.Cleaned the bar hole.Cleaned all other holes oil related.The worm gear is fine.The oil pump gear at top looks fine.I start saw up and with the bar removed no oil comes out the side where bar goes.While I was cleaning stuff is when I seen the black cap beside muffler on left side.So thought to mention about that.Still puzzled though about my saw and why no oil and what caused what ever to not work.Every hole oil filter so on is fine.So I assume oil pump is bad.Why and is that something that happens often in saws I do not know.

    • @joesphbaumgardner4579
      @joesphbaumgardner4579 5 років тому

      That and leave saw sit awhile and the thing leaks oil.Not much, but coats some of the bottom.The white and black plastic on underside where it sits say on the ground.I thought maybe bad oil pump not working can cause that.But not so sure that would.That is, even if my pump is bad.

      Hi, these non professional Stihl saws all have a similar format, the best thing is to work though the various options methodically and enjoy the process. I have another video that may help, it's in the chainsaw revision play list: ua-cam.com/video/xwAdKcjC7vY/v-deo.html, hope this helps, cheers. Subscribed?

    THANK YOU! You just saved my saw! Ive had it 22 years and just finished installing New oil line, gas line, coil, carb, air filter and plug and the thing was pissing oil everywhere....It was headed for the trash and then I watched this and am happy to say its working better than ever. I actually found this kit on ebay that has everything I installed for $15 Canadian! www.ebay.com/itm/171547210663 heres a link if your interested! Cheers

    Are You sure that the Hole is not a seat of the Tank ventilation Checkvalve?

    • @jackmannjack1251
      @jackmannjack1251 7 років тому +1

      J. Witschor Service Manual would be the right thing to go thru I guess, if You not sure. But I don't think the tank vent would have its end so close to the muffler, from engineers point of view.

    • @TheInfoworks
      @TheInfoworks  7 років тому

      Hi the plug is on the pressure side of the pump so cannot be a tank vent, let's see how it goes, cheers

    Stihl did a Good Thing with those removeable exhaust studs. Not so good with that oil plug that falls out - I guess that hole is there as part of the manuf. process ? I wonder how many saws have that plug missing ? :o) Cheers, Dave

    • @TheInfoworks
      @TheInfoworks  7 років тому +1

      Dave, i too assume it is part of the manufacturing process. I had on 125
      with the same fault, so probably lot's of saws. It may however be a
      pressure release plug for when the bar oil hole gets blocked. Now
      there's a thought. Cheers, Andy

    • @noakeswalker
      @noakeswalker 7 років тому

      Yes, it could be Andy - it's a bit of a one shot device in which case - (core plug in an engine block comes to mind) you'd think a spring/ball relief valve would be nicer, though more expensive.... handy to know this can happen anyway.

    • @TheInfoworks

      Dave
      I asked our main Stihl dealer and the plug is not available as a Sthil part, they use a grub screw when the plug is missing. So now we know, cheers
