This video stands the test of time. The close ups and detailed explanations instill confidence to make these repairs by the owners. The Stihl chainsaw we own still has a plaque that reads "Made in Germany". I was using it last year to help my neighbor clear a large downed tree, but most of the way into clearing the tree it stopped oiling. It's been sitting for a year now and this spring I can finally sit outside, hopefully a warm sunny day, and get into this. All I need is the 27 star tool. Thanks again for all the details, including tools and screw locations. And, this isn't the first video of yours I've seen. Much thanks DB.
Without question, this is by far the best saw repair video I’ve ever seen. No BS jabbering, no annoying elevator music, no advertising. Every detail perfectly shown. Each step of disassembly and reassembly perfectly explained, right down to specific tools. Perfect camera placement and clear audio of great diction. Stihl should put you on their payroll!
donyboy73, thank YOU! I was about to toss my MS250C in the trash, but now I’m confident that I can have it working like new with no problem. The oiler is the only problem I’ve ever had with this saw, but it was driving me crazy.
Thankyou so much Donyboy. The other day, I replaced all of the oiler components on my MS230 which had stopped supplying oil to the bar and chain. Your very clear explanation and instructions made it easy. For those in the UK contemplating any DIY maintenance on their Stihl machinery (or indeed most garden machinery) I can recommend L&S Engineers for all parts supplies. Clear parts diagrams on their website, competitive prices and quick delivery. The combination of DonyBoy's clear instructions and the availability of parts makes servicing and repairing your own machinery a walk in the park.
I was the guy who's 025 Stihl was in storage since '07. I believe I wrote to one of your other vids about not being able to pull the starter rope to "turn it over." I pulled with more force and everything was fine after that. When I opened the case after 9 years all the chain oil had bled out of the saw. "THIS" video helped me resolve that problem and I want to thank you for this helpful video. My '97 025 is essentially the same saw as the saw in this video. I'm mechanically inclined, but, never worked on my 025. I followed your procedures here and replaced the oil tube as well as that little "O" ring...problem solved! The Torx T-27 driver and the M-5 metric screw you recommended were "spot on." I checked out the pump...it was good. Put it all back and everything is fine. The Stihl dealer that I bought the saw in '97 is still in business. The "piston stop" they gave me...I couldn't get it to work, but, inserting a soft poly ski-rope that worked fine. One question I have...the bar is nice and flat and not distorted or worn out and the oil hole is dispersing oil well...is it normal to have a bit of oil drip down after the saw is turned off? I set the saw onto a flat surface after running it and there was a small dime size puddle of oil that came from the bar where the oil hole is. Is that normal? Thanks again for this great video.
Before stripimg down the clutch etc. use a piece of electric wire, 1.5mm and try to unblock the oiler hole as far down as you can, then use a piece of 25lb fishing line and do the same, the fishing line will go around the bend right through to the oil pump and clear any blockage there. 99% of the time this is the cure.
In the US I was sold a 1123-640-3201 oil pump. I believe it takes a 10-32 machine screw rather than the M5 used for the 1123-640-3200 oil pump shown in the video. Great video.
I don't often comment on video's but yours is so perfectly done that I must. Thank you so much for you're excellent demonstration and commentary. Can't imagine it done better than this!
Great video and very clear instructions. Had same issue on my saw, stripped it down and replaced rubber pipe. Later found it was the oil cap that was leaking. Now replaced and all clean underneath.
Just a great DIY chainsaw repair video! When my oiler stopped, I didn't have a clue how to fix it. I found your video, enjoyed watching it and knew immediately I could do the repair because of your excellent explanation and high quality videography. Two things I found by accident during my repair: The handle bolts will fit the oil pump for extraction, so you'll always have an extractor tool. And, to clean the small oiler hole, I inserted the oil straw attached to my can of WD40. Give it a good squirt and it flushes out debris.
I’ve been watching chainsaw how-to videos for a long time and this one is the absolute best I’ve seen. I very much appreciate your approach snd methods …thank you 👍🏼
A quick look through the comments says it all for me. This has to be the best "how to" video I've ever seen. Every detail is covered in such a professional manner, it was a joy to watch. Thank you donyboy, your efforts in producing this video are greatly appreciated.
Well-made, no-nonsense, professional video. You don't waste our time with needless conversation like so many of the other self-help videos out there, you get right to the point and tell us what we need to know. Great camera angles, good closeups, good lighting, attention to detail, and excellent descriptions of the procedures and what to watch out for, including safety recommendations. Excellent job, keep those well-made videos coming, they are greatly appreciated!
For additional help in lining up the pump during replacement, there is a symbol next to the hole for the pump. It represents the positioning of the new pump with the groove on the pump facing the correct direction. I like all of your videos, you are very thorough and explain things every step of the way.
I know you have many excellent comments already, but I have to add mine as well. Excellent photography, detailed instructions and explanations make this is the best video repair demonstration i have ever viewed. I could follow your directions down to very last detail to change the oil pump on my model 023C. Also, appreciated all the part numbers in the video description. Can't see why anyone would have a reason to give this video a thumbs down. Thank-you very much.
I came across your video about 8 months ago when my oiler was not working on the chainsaw. It turns out I just needed to clean things up. I also cleaned the weep holes on the bar. Put it all back together and it worked great.
Thank you for this video. I have a MS290 but many of the steps are similar. The pump on my unit was actually easier to remove, just two bolts and I didn’t have to remove the handle. This video gave me enough info and confidence to do the job. My pump was starting to bind and that caused the plastic worm gear to eat itself. Two parts and back up again. Thanks!!!
This video is perfect! I have an MS-250 Chainsaw, and noticed the chain wasn't getting oil. Followed your instructions. Turns out the O-ring on that plastic piece was pinched. Not installed correctly at the factory. I ordered the same parts you did, just in case. It's really quite easy if you see someone do it once or twice, and know what to expect. Thanks for these great videos.
Thank you, it's one thing knowing your stuff and another being able to teach it - you do both BRILLIANTLY. Best teaching I've seen on YT full stop. Given me the steps and confidence to tackle a dry 044. Echo your oil /bar check, taught to do it as a safety check on every saw start. Subscribed without hesitation.
Last week I bought used stihl chainsaw and I want just clean up, but, found oil leaks, this video help me, to understand from where and how to repair. I'm doing everything very excited and when I'm done, I was very happy that I doing by myself. Thanks for the video, really cool!
Wow - I am usually pretty critical about DIY videos, I end up watching numerous ones and still it is not enough. BUT, my MS290 had the same issue. It turned out to be a clogged oil filter and because of your video I just went in and replaced everything that was worn!! YOU ARE REALLY GOOD AT THIS! FYI, the Stihl dealer wanted $55 to diagnosis the issue and if it was the pump. $115 with parts----3 week waiting time. I hope somehow you are in education or training, if not, you should be - Best DIY video I have seen in a long time - Thank You!!
A true professional.Beautifuly constructed video.Operaters like me want to understand how their Gear works and carry out repairs Themselves.Truly priceless!!!
Just want to thank you for a great video. I have a machine shop and know my way around alot of products. To day I disassembled my Stihl ez start 250. With notes from the video is was very easy. Thank you for saving me alot of time and money.
I noticed that you mention the clutch notch for the oiler location. The mark lines up over the wire . Now going back to your instalation of the oil pump . You marked out side of the case the hole that does not have the long slot side with a black marker. Nice. But what i noticed on your video is the chainsaw already has a casting mark on it showing the slotted side of the oiler goes this way. Looks like the letter " C " but a bacwards C . Just noticed this cool marking from the manufacture. As always . Great video and explained well. Keep it going Donny.!
There is a shortage of people like you sir!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Would say more but my saw is fixed and Im burning daylight. Cheers mate.
After your saw sits for a while it leaks out the oil that is in the pump then you start it and it doesn't pump because it lost it's prime so take the oil cap lose to let air in and see if the oil starts to flow again. If not working next pull the oil feed line off see if oil comes out? Oil will then start coming out the line, put line back on. Next super common thing is your bar oil hole is full of saw dust, clean that out.
FYI, Stihl molds a small "diagram" of the bottom of the oiler pump on most saws, to help to align correctly when reinstalling. You can clearly see this "diagram" at 8:54 between the oiler hole and left edge of the screen. On the MS250, there is also a small divet near the hole to help with alignment. Again, this can be seen at 8:54.
Yes, he put a piece of text over the video describing the icon. I don't think he noticed the icon when recording but in the edit added the text. Good catch!
Good job brother nice video I do small engine repair to and chainsaws and it drives me up a wall when people are blowing stuff off all the crud oil dirt in their shop it was nice to see you go outside and blow it out outside I try to keep a clean shop
Great video. Thank you for going into detail about which hole in the oil pump is the exit port. I pulled the oil pump out of a Stihl gas pole saw and didn't know which way it went back in. Fortunately mine only needed a good cleaning of the oil system.
Just installed a high volume pump in my MS250. My saw has NEVER oiled the bar and chain that good. I’m honestly convinced my pump was junk from the factory. Had it in the shop twice and they said it was fine. But doing the ole’ cardboard test, I never had oil slinging onto it. But I sure do now 😮!
Great video. I bet this actually covers a lot of different models of Stihl saws, all the internals look similar to my MS211. Of course the part numbers will be different. One note - I noticed if I manually spin the clutch drum that the oiler works and a very small amount of oil comes out of the bar oiling hole, proof positive that the pump works. It takes about 10 rotations but it works.
Thanks for sharing, I have a set of Stihl chainsaws, and it is great to understand the mechanisms involved in their operation. I really appreciate a pro like you taking the time to educate us laypeople on the inner workings of our equipment. Maybe I will do my own maintenance on my 290, of course, my 660 will continue to get professional care.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! I sure do like all your videos on Small Engines. They are so very informative and I also like that you provide the part numbers and links to Amazon. That saved me a lot of research last month when you gave me the Amazon link and Craftsman model number for a Sears LT2000 mower deck spindle.
Your videos are absolutely the best! So clear and excellent description. A repair shop manual drawings are tough to understand. I often recommend your vids. You've saved counless dollars and down time.
This is another great video. Clear, concise, and complete. The job itself is a little more involved than I would normally be comfortable taking on but I think I could do it by referring back to this video and taking pictures as I went. Thanks for another very informative video.
Great Video! I have been struggling with my 025 oiler for the last year. I broke my down and found that my oil pump had some debris that clogged the outbound port. I cleaned out the oiler with compressed air and starting fluid and put the saw back together. Also took the time to clean up the saw while I had it tore apart(over 20 years of built up debris in some parts) I now have good oil flow and the chain/bar is well lubricated. For what it's worth I did purchase a new sprocket, Worm Gear, and Oiler for under $20 on Amazon.
excellent video, it was complicated with my saw but thanks to this video I took it apart and easily repaired the lubrication problem, greetings from the Chilean Patagonia
Wow great video now i know what i need to do with my 14 year old Stihl chain saw. We use to have a awesom Sthil chainsaw mechanic here in the area but unfortunately he was killed in a motorcycle accident just this past year now we have nobody that knows anything that I can find about Stihl chainsaws so I guess all the repairs I'm going to have to do myself thank you again great video very informative
Thanks, Dony! Fixed my chainsaw following the video. It took the whole day though, but now it's all working great. Half stripped a screw, but that's my lack of experience... Thanks again!
My MS 250 is less than a year old and it'd burn the chain about every 5 min when cutting into a log. Hickory, oak, maple or pine. Would start out GREAT!! and in a few minutes start burning up the chain. Clean rinse and repeat. Oil flows good if you're not cutting wood....haha!!! I need to bring it in under warranty, but I know what I'm gonna hear. "works good, we can't find anything wrong". Oil comes out fine, I've cleaned bar guides/slots and even squirt some bar oil all over for a bump. It just doesn't like 2-4 minutes straight of cutting logs. New chain and and all.
@9:00 do you see that ring impression in the plastic on the left with a cutout mark? That's the oil pump alignment reference mark. No need for sharpie marks. Just line the pump up using that reference.
Wow another awesome video. Wish I'd seen it several years ago when mine wasn't feeding oil. Tried almost everything and finally gave up and used it for parts for my other two MS170's!!
8:30 shows a cast-in figure just to the left of the oil pump that shows the orientation of the groove in the pump. Do all models, like the MS170, have a stop for the pump depth? The STIHL manual says to “use the special tool” until the tool handle hits the case but it doesn’t say how deep the installed pump is.
Awesome video. My 250 wasn't oiling and this video showed me exactly what to do. It's easy to see why you have so many subscribers. Thanks for sharing what you know with the rest of us.
Thank you. Explained very nicely. I see several issues, why my 250 may not be oiling. But now I know what to look for. This was perfect. I have the skills to fix it, if I know what is wrong.
I put a new Stihl oil pump on my 021, yesterday. I blew out all the oil passages with Brake Cleaner and air. I had to use the .55 Stihl oil pump because they did not have a .65 oil pump in stock. I just wanted to get it working, capacity I will deal with later. I di notice that it wanted to rotate slightly as I pushed it into its hole. I pulled it back out, once, and reinserted it, correctly, because it had rotated about 25 degrees during my first insertion. I installed a new Stihl oil line, as well. It oils. It does not slobber bar oil, like some of my saws, but puts out enough to lubricate the bar.
Love it!! Excellent video. I followed your instructions exactly and solved my problem. I feel empowered. Thank you for putting in the effort and sharing. You’re the best!
Tremendous video! Very well done! I see you made this video about 3 years ago... funny thing... that's almost as long as I've been manually applying oil to my chainsaw! ... I know, but I follow one motto: _Never procrastinate until you absolutely have to._
My MS290 is leaking oil from the place where it lubricates the bar (the hole) even when sitting, I'm thinking I will replace the whole oil system since it's been about 10 years. Good videos, very informative and professional.
Dony you have helped me with many of my projects. All with great results. You speak very clear and your directions are perfect. Thank you for your videos $!
Brilliant video! As a relative newby to chainsaws, it's really interesting to know how bits and pieces work and how to troubleshoot, repair or replace. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Wow what a great video !! My dad has an 026 thats leaking the chain oil and looks like its the either the Clear plastic Connector or oil line,or both..this video will make a huge difference and should save some down time..Thank you for an excellent video !
Foolish me -- if I had done more research before buying a 10-year-old MS 250 I probably wouldn't have got it. Since this video has had more than a million hits, obviously the Stihl 250 has a real big problem with its oiling components -- as I found out with the 250 I just bought! I got it as a backup for my 19-year-old MS 290, which has seen a lot of wood (6-7 cords a year), but you know what? It's never had a bit of trouble with its oiler. It had a carb problem, but that's fixed now. Anyone want to buy my 250 from me so I don't have to tear into it? 200 bucks and it's yours. (great video, by the way!)
You're an awesome teacher. If there's a tech school in your area they should be looking for you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and giving such precise detail. Excellent job on shooting the video too. With your help, was able to replace a bad clutch on my Stihl 290. I'll be looking for more of your videos.
Some people aren't fit to own anything 😮 , hopefully, mine stays OK but this is an excellent video for those of us who might need a reassuring hand with a job on this side 😊👍👍Thank you Sir😊
Your videos have helped me a lot, THANKS. Question: I have a MS 251 Wood Boss and oil isn't getting to the bar. Its pumping oil, the ports are clean but the oil doesn't seem to get to the bar or chain. My chain falls off after a few minutes of use and the bar and chain are dry.
excellent video. My 026 is spitting chain oil like an open faucet. I think the 0 ring you pointed out on the plastic is the likely problem. I'll try that. Thx
Hey Doc, Thanks for the video. I'd like to know why you recommend to not run the engine at speed without the chain/bar installed. As you indicated during your troubleshooting, it would be a great easy way to test for oil flow.
You don't need to run the engine at all to test the oiler - just rotate the clutch drum (without the bar and chain, and with brake off) about 10 turns clockwise, and you should see oil flowing out of the hole that matches up to the bar oiler hole.
thank you, i can't find such good explaination in France! merci beaucoup, très utile, vidéo très dur a trouver en français, mais pas besoin de traduction, la vidéo parle d'elle même!
Great video, Donny. Info is complete and concise. My chainsaw has been leaking oil, and, now, I know to go check the oil connector. Thanks for the great info! You've earned a sub.
Thank you donyboy73. Because of sharing knowledge about stihl cutting machines. It is very useful especially on stihl machine owners. thanks again donyboy73.👍
Another very informative video. The explanations and camera angle and close ups are excellent for us backyardigans when it comes to us making these types of repairs on our tools and gear. Thanks for doing these.

I owned a Stihl for over 20 years now and it never even occurred to me it had an oil pump. Now i got something else to check out on it. Thanks.
Without question, this is by far the best saw repair video I’ve ever seen. No BS jabbering, no annoying elevator music, no advertising. Every detail perfectly shown. donyboy73, thank YOU! I was about to toss my MS250C in the trash, but now I’m confident that I can have it working like new with no problem. The oiler is the only problem I’ve ever had with this saw, but it was driving me crazy.
If there is a YT award for 'Best Small Engine Repair Channel', Don would win hands-down! Beautifully filmed and explained.

Great vid. Thanks from England 🇬🇧
I know you have many excellent comments already, but I have to add mine as well. Same here Ken. That O ring on mine was a mess from the factory
This is the way eveyone should explain things, this will save me a lot of time, Thanks.
My STIHL technician taught me to check the depth of the oil pump prior to removal, and to reinstall at the same depth - so it works properly.
This should be the "bar" to meet in technical instruction videos. Exemplary! Thank you, you are a master of thoughtful and knowledgable repair.
*OUTSTANDING DETAILS! NOT MANY EXPLAIN THINGS LIKE THIS! OUTSTANDING!

Again, this can be seen at 8:54.
Yes, he put a piece of text over the video describing the icon. I don't think he noticed the icon when recording but in the edit added the text. Good catch!
Very well done, Don :) I don't understand why some people have dislike this video... Thank you for sharing!
These are very well done. I'm working on my MS180C model right now trying to get the oiler to work.
Good job brother nice video I do small engine repair to and chainsaws and it drives me up a wall when people are blowing stuff off all the crud oil dirt in their shop it was nice to see you go outside and blow it out outside I try to keep a clean shop
Right on!
Maybe I will do my own maintenance on my 290, of course, my 660 will continue to get professional care.
you're welcome gareth, make sure you are subscribed
donyboy73 You betcha! And I will tell my friends also.

I hope the 250 is close to the 280.
I just did my 180 with your help.
Thanks Mr. Dony.
This is another great video. Clear, concise, and complete. The job itself is a little more involved than I would normally be comfortable taking on but I think I could do it by referring back to this video and taking pictures as I went. Thanks for another very informative video.
Thank you you just save me a trip to the mecanic

I just came across a 250 that had been thrown away, that I decided to resurrect. This video s what I needed. Outstanding!
Your videos are the best I have seen on UA-cam. Your instructions and video are very clear and ez to follow. Thanks 👍
Great video. This saved me from buying a new saw. The repair was easy and best of all it worked. The saw oils fine now.
these long videos are the ones i love. Thankyou
thanks
@9:00 do you see that ring impression in the plastic on the left with a cutout mark? That's the oil pump alignment reference mark.
No need for sharpie marks. Just line the pump up using that reference.
I came here to say that! Have a thumbs up for doing it first! :)
I think he did that so we could see it on the video.
Huge help to simplifying what seems like a big project. Love your detailed and easy to understand videos!
I definitely need to do this with my chainsaw as well. It's not getting any oil to the chain. So thanks for the video. It is a big help.
What a lifesaver...my '94 025 will get some beauty treatment thanks to your video. As many said, great detail/editing.
Thanks Donny you are one of the best technician in the world.
Thank you. Explained very nicely. I see several issues, why my 250 may not be oiling. But now I know what to look for. This was perfect. I have the skills to fix it, if I know what is wrong.
THE ABSOLUTE BEST EXPLANATION OF ANY I HAVE WATCHED.
You are a natural teacher. The best!
thanks!
You make it looks so easy Danny... I do happen to have one Stihl 038 (I think so) that leaks oil heavily and needs to be handled...
Good videos, very informative and professional.
because of your well detail videos, I have been able to fix my three ms180 chainsaw........ Thank you.
This is a remarkable video Danny, and you are an excellent instructor. Thank you, Dave
Wow what a great video !! My dad has an 026 thats leaking the chain oil and looks like its the either the Clear plastic Connector or oil line,or both..this video will make a huge difference and should save some down time..Thank you for an excellent video !
Who in their right mind would thumbs down this video. Excellent lesson!
JEALOUSY causes people to do that
I appreciate the no fluff info you put out. Good production quality too. Gives me something to shoot for.
Very nice video, very clear explanation, spoken with a clear quiet voice
Excellent how too video. Mine had a plugged groove on the oil pump. Pump is good. Saved me some bucks thanks
Sans comprendre l'Anglais, j'ai avec vos gestuels precis, tout compris! Magnifique
je parle francais aussi!
Your tutorials are simply the best
excellent video.
Slow, steady and deliberate description. Great video on the subject. Great close up and editing Donyboy.
Judging by the sticker on top of the saw it's from a dealer near me. Awesome video. A perfect tutorial.
Another very informative video. The explanations and camera angle and close ups are excellent for us backyardigans when it comes to us making these types of repairs on our tools and gear. Thanks for doing these.
you're welcome
I really take pride in caring for my saws. Which you make possible thank you. Am greatful to you
bonjour, merci.
je ne parle pas l'Anglais, et pourtant avec vos gestes, j'ai tout compris! Super bien precis. MERCI
