The Cars perfomed this song at Mountain Aire 84. I was on the rail, in front of Ric.They took a quick break between songs. They rolled out a small synthisizer to Rics mic. He came and hit a key... "jimmy..jimmy" I went nuts. Ric looked right at me. Most" Fans" had no idea whaT WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. gREAT MEMORIES
Music is always playing in my brain… Even when I’m dreaming… Woke up with this playing in my mind this morning… Thank you Ric, Ben and the rest of The Cars for adding so much to the lives of so many. Miss you. ❤️👍
Ric's debut solo album (Beatitude) was the first cassette I ever purchased and this song, the opening track, still haunts me to this day. I'm saddened to hear of his passing, but I'm grateful for the years of excellent music Ric gave us. Thank you for everything.
I feel like I lost my life. In his twenties, he lived with his music. I'm still excited about the pleasant rhythm. I was pulling out and listening to this music even when I was still depressed. Thank you for entertaining youth. Good night slowly.
I do love this song. But just to bring up how great Ric was with the Cars... The Cars doing this tune at Houston (Cars '83 tour) is just over the top stellar.
This and "Emotion in Motion" remain on my '80s Spotify playlist with even more love now for what Ric Ocasek has achieved outside his benchmark career with The Cars. RIP
Fantastic tune! I remember when this album came out and all the controversy associated with Ocasek. I cared not. The drama and private lives of artists do not interest me. Their work does and this is one of the best tunes this man has done.
They want to talk to you...about something they found in your drawer...under a Hustler magazine. They want to cool you out...and ignore your problems. This is exactly how I felt in 1985. As cheesy as this song is, Back when 'i needed it, this song was the perfect soundtrack to my shitty teenage-kicked-out-of-moms-house-living-with dad life. "You're pretending nothing's wrong". Indeed.
every time I listen to this, I appreciate the synths more and more!! and the lyrics are great.... I wasn't crazy over it when it was released...like it now

This is one of those rare songs where the live version excels far beyond the studio version. The Cars Live in Houston -Sept 1984, version is simply awesome.
Some reason this song has been on my mind. So glad I got to see the Cars in 1979 in San Diego when I was stationed there in the marines. I was so happy to see my two fellow Ohio guys. Was such a great show. To think we have lost Ric And Ben that makes me sad. I so miss those days. I am glad I was a young adult 20 to 29 during the 80s.
I liked this song a lot when it came out. But I thought it then, and I think it now ... how much cooler would this song have been, had Elliot Easton added some guitar licks. Similar to what Joe Walsh did for some of Don Henley's solo works. RIP Ric Ocasek - truly a one of a kind artist.
This song is far more prophetic today, I think, than it was when it came out. In a post-9/11 world, with the middle class disapppearing, few prospects for good jobs, little to look forward to even with an education, and a wealthy president who says, "We're all in this together" and then flies off in his private jet leaving a landscape of foreclosures behind him... nobody's getting off. It CAN happen here. Maybe it has to.
Nikita Kade Another wannabe political intellect posturing in grandstand style here on a music based network his opinions on life and politics when this should be only about rock n roll. And according to this genius who obviously dismisses George W. Bush Presidential policies as the real culprit behind forclosures, and building more wealth for the already rich, and putting the Mideast in a terrible tailspin, has no musical smarts to relay on this 80's tune or band. Your kind HAS happened here; and were all paying for it today......
Listening to this song brings back a flood of memories of my freshman year in college, all of them great. The first taste of independence; studying in the library on weeknights because I figured out that I wasn't as smart as I thought I was; hanging at the student union or trying to figure out which sorority house to visit on the weekends proving that I was as dumb as I really was; as I said, great memories. Would I trade what I have to day to go back? Certainly not, but it's fun to remember.
thx for the good times when new wave bands brought us music never heard before. today, you cant find a song where you could exclude that it was from the 80s or 90s. never knew that you were the age of the rolling stones though.
And God said I have this problem Can you take care of it for me? I said I had enough thanks Something going on I do know about I got off the carousel It was only going Round in circles Of endless destruction
When did he die? Just saw them get inducted RRHF. Thank you Auntie Re for Heatbeat City for my birthday june of 84. That album will always be summer of 84. Esp. Magic. Hope he is with his buddy Ben Orr. Reminiscing!!
There's a live performance by The Cars posted on UA-cam from Houston 1984 and about four songs in there's an absolutely mesmerising version of this song.
I don't understand why Ric released *this* as a single, when "A Quick One" sounds like a smash hit just WAITING TO HAPPEN . . . Even *today*, I think, it would sound good on the radio!
WOW, thanks for posting this! I always knew this video existed, but I NEVER saw it on MTV. Saw plenty of "Something To Grab For" from the same album, but never this one. Well, okay, I admit it's a boring video. I would rather have seen more of Ric himself. Anybody out there still watch "The Cars Live 1984-85" on VHS? The TV sets onstage show a bit of this video, the scene where Ric appears at the end of the line outside the club.
RIP Ric, thank you for all the memorable music.

RIP Ric. There will never be another band with your sound... and that is a good thing.
Music is always playing in my brain… Even when I’m dreaming…
Woke up with this playing in my mind this morning…
Thank you Ric, Ben and the rest of The Cars for adding so much to the lives of so many.

This album is a master piece also broke new ground. First EDM.
one of the best yet totally overlooked songs from one of the all time greatest artists of the 80's
I feel like I lost my life.
In his twenties, he lived with his music.
I'm still excited about the pleasant rhythm.
I was pulling out and listening to this music even when I was still depressed.
Thank you for entertaining youth. Good night slowly.
When this came out in '83, I chuckled at the line "What's the matter with these kids today?" Now I sometimes wonder the same thing.
Bob Smith Too busy being influenced by the RETARDashians and listening to shitty music by Bieber, Swift, Ed Shitstain and Nicki Minaj. #smfh
Ok boomer
@@tmendyka These would be Gen X'ers not boomers dumb ass...
I love this moody, pulsating track from Ric's first solo LP, Beatitude.
Love that song, love that album. RIP Ric.
I do love this song. But just to bring up how great Ric was with the Cars... The Cars doing this tune at Houston (Cars '83 tour) is just over the top stellar.

R.I.P. !!! When I first heard "Just what I needed" on the radio I was just blown away but the distinctive sound! Loved and love Cars
God bless your soul Ric!
Rest in peace. ✝️🌷🎸
What a great Song! Rest In Peace Ric! This and all the Songs from the Cars will always be remembered with You!
RIP Mr Ocasek

Ric Ocasek R.I.P. 🌹😥 9-15-19.
Great album. I have the vinyl. I've never seen this one on CD. Ric's first solo album...
It seems the CD just came out!
JOY to all who hear Ric!!! see you in Heaven buddy
RIP some of the best music ever.
Another icon gone.😔
Always loved this song and the rest of the Beatitude album....great stuff!!

Thanks for the memories, Ric
Incredible. What a masterpiece!!!!
It is a pity that he never sang in Poland. The Cars has many fans here.
It is such a pity for all of us that never got to see them in concert...It breaks my heart.
Had no idea there was an official video for this song. Definitely the standout track from Beatitude.
I found out because someone posted an MTV Playlist from early 1983 on line and I was "there was a video to Jimmy Jimmy?"
RIP Ric Ocasek :(
the cars forever
every time I listen to this, I appreciate the synths more and more!! and the lyrics are great.... I wasn't crazy over it when it was released...like it now
The day I put "Beatitude" on and this came out, I said "holy shit" out loud. Didn't know Mom was in the hall. WORTH IT.
Ric and Ben will always live on in our personal sound waves so play them often and loudly

Ocasek was such a geek! Poster Boy too. Look who he married! I couldn't wait to buy This Side Of Paradise, I never knew about Beatitude! Very Missed!
This is one of those rare songs where the live version excels far beyond the studio version. The Cars Live in Houston -Sept 1984, version is simply awesome.
Yeah this version sounds a bit weak. Kinda disappointing compared to that live version
I agree because eliiot adds a bit of guitar in Houston 84
Ric ocasek was the greatest!!!!

I'm thinking that my band ADVENTURE SET might do a cover of my fave Ric O solo song. You will be missed. xox
You should!
P.S. Adventure Set is an EXCELLENT band name!
@@BedlamAndBones Thanx Garrett. Feel free to check out our music on Facebook & Bandcamp.
If anyone had any doubts about O'Casek being a huge talent with or without the cars, this album should have dispelled them. This is my favorite track.
woofy woof
Being a 54 year old punk brought me back here in 2020
RIP💔🖤💔
Ric, I like your voice,too.
what a rock and roll!
what a music!
please let us hear another one!
you live till i die.
Oh my god, this song....
It's been impossible to find "Beatitude" on CD, but eMusic came through and has it for sale. So happy I found it again!
Bucketroo try to find on vinyl. Rasputans
I was lucky enough to find a copy at Tower Records 10 years ago, I still own it today!
One of the truly great underrated songs of the 80s
This has a Heartbeat City vibe
Good music back in the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!: )

Very underestimated song in the catalog..should've been on a Cars album

Great solo tune by Ric. I just became the 4000th Subscriber and proud of it!
Top track from Ric, I love it! Like everything he did - original with his own sound. Cool video too!
this song is relatable to a lot of todays youth i think.......still holds up for me....
Rest in Peace Ric, let the good times roll
Love this song! I almost forgot about it. Rest in peace ✌ beautiful Ric Ocasek.
RIP Ric.
Classic rock song 🎸
I love the 80s glamorous "punks." Awesome pretty boyz and girlz.

wicked sad song.
Still know the lyrics......loved this album...Beatitude
LIKE.
Ric had no prom date maybe, but he has quite a few hits and maybe some pocket change. I enjoyed the tunes!
