Just what I’m looking for good honest advice from someone experienced in truck campers. I had virtually know experience in RV’s whatsoever until 2 years ago in September of 2020 we were in the market for a truck and found a mint condition 2008 GMC 3500 diesel dually 4X4 only 70,000 km. It was being sold as package deal with a 2008 Lance 992 camper. We managed to get out only a couple of times that year and only once last year but we really enjoyed it and had a lot to learn. We prefer boondocking or provincial parks in the off season. The camper has 2 slideouts and we prefer them to hard side campers. We looked at trading our camper on a new one but I wanted a different floor plan than being stuck sitting at the dinette table. We looked at the 2022 Lance 1172. They have 2 slideouts the rear slide has a couch that you can sit and watch TV and stretch your legs out when you can’t sit outside when it’s cold raining or dark with the bugs. So we traded the 992 and ordered the 1172 with the options we prefer from our short lived experience. 2 solar panels propane generator the new quiet type. Tankless water heater, 2 lithium batteries, LTE cell phone antenna, 4 season package, outside propane line for our little portable BBQ, microwave and regular stove/oven, TV. We also have a portable solar panel and we use those wood pieces for the wheels and camper jacks. I also bought an airbag kit to install on my truck this spring. I was considering taking the home RV training academy course on RV repairs because warranty or not they will all break down at some point. Our camper should be delivered this spring. Major upgrades ... unbelievable amount of inverters ! I thought I did a lot of tinkering and add ons to my riggs... you make me look like small potatoes when it comes to tinkering. Why soooo many inverters? Why not just one big one and run wires? Huge thumbs up on getting your truck to double as a generator. Great video 📹 👍 👏
Great question. The inverters draw a lot of power just sitting with no draw. The larger inverter, the larger the draw on the batteries. So I tried to match the inverter to what the power demand is. I didn't want a 3000 watt inverter only powering a TV. It would draw down the house batteries real quick.
Im still 1 year and 4 months before retirement. We plan on a new truck and cabover camper set up like you have. Really wish you were my neighbor so you can show me how to do all those electrical upgrades. I doubt my local RV joint will take the care or even have the knowledge you have. Im nervous about the purchase, but excited as well. It will be my very last truck and my first and last camper so I want to do it right. I will be checking out the rest of your videos to see if you have more tips and how to's.
Thanks, it's a lot of trial and error. It's a love of adventure and the truck camper lifestyle that keeps me intrested. The upgrades happen over time depending on my needs. Not everyone travels the same roads and stays at the same style campgrounds, so I found a style that works for my travels. Every trip I take I try to find ways to make life easier. Hopefully you find the videos interesting and I appreciate you watching!
Oh...one last thing....this whole UA-cam thing for me is completely new..I didn't own a camera or computer for more then a day before I made my first video...I promise I'll get better! Lol
@@KennyOfAllTrades It takes practice for sure. I was trying to improve my video and bought a gimble. I found that it did not fix anything other than I had to learn the new gear and HOW to use it. That is what you will experience with sound, editing, cameras, music, lighting, tripods, and camera movement. I have tried just letting the camera run and edit after, but that takes lots of time to filter through your takes. I found that a little bit of scripting and planning and lighting helped. Just enjoy the process and because you are filming what you love, it makes it soo much fun. Safe travels.
Thanks, that being one of my first videos makes me cringe a bit. But it's fun to go back and see how I developed on camera, and I'm still learning a lot every week.
good video. wonder if there is a blow up rain gutter that sits on the whole frame of the top... ok. i am making this up in my head. but, i was inspired by the life air bags you have. so, maybe if water is an issue running down the sides of all rv and campers... well why not have a blow up or air cutter system at the touch of a remote when it rains?... the reason not to use maybe a tarp or something like that would be for the wind. it seems that a pool float type blow up rim around the outer edge of the top that would be just below the top and catch water and drip it about 2 inches around the outside edge of your rv walls or camper walls... there got to be a system right? it just seems that water is the long term enemy of rv and campers?
I think there is a need for the product you are talking about. And now with the truck camper industry blowing up you may have a good idea in the works. You are right, water is the absolute killer of most campers!
Kenny, my wife and I have been watching your videos for some time now. We love your videos. We were just watching some of your older content, and came across this tour. We currently have an Arctic Fox 865 on a Ford F350 Dually. We noticed in this video your the Police patch in your truck. I’ve been telling my wife I thought you were a fellow Law Enforcement Officer. I could just tell. Am I right? lol. My wife and I are both Deputy Sheriff’s here in NC, where we live. We also recently started our own UA-cam Channel. You have inspired us some many ways! Hopefully one day we might see you down the road.
That's is so cool!! I will check out the channel. I think we can spot each other from all the same training that's drilled into our heads. I know when I would go to other agencies for classes, I would sit outside and spot who was also there for training and who's a member of the public. Stay safe and have fun with the channel!
Thanks, the remote controlled air bags do come in handy. When I get on the Hwy or Interstate I will usually keep them at 40 pounds. That about level with the front. It keeps my headlights pointed properly, otherwise I risk blinding on comming traffic with the lights. If I go off road I will drop them to 5 pounds, that gives the truck a soft ride for crawling over rocks and going through large ruts. When I park the truck I will adjust them to level everything out. Many times I will have one bag at 100 pounds and the other at 5 pounds. This allows me to park on unlevel ground and keep the camper level. It's not a must have...but makes life easier. Thanks for watching and commenting. My next few videos have been showing a lot more tips for Truck Camper owners!
20# and 30# is the actual amount of propane put into the bottles. The pressure is still the same - just a bigger use of propane in the bigger-weighted bottle.
Screen door pus bar make you screen door stif and work great and if you have a dog the make lower door grill so dog can’t tear up screen and stiffens up the screen door even more !
I'm fromer LE, I got out last year. I also hung my badge above the camper door. I Now work for the Department of Public Safety. The patch is off my external carrier.
Some people took offense to that. Lol. I guess it's all in personal life experiences. I've arrested many people on drug charges coming out of RV with tin foiled windows. But never a clean, well taken care RV. It's all about life experiences.
In the video you mention the pormido camera is "wireless". I've only found wired versions. How did you book your camera up the the truck camper? Is it a pain to take the camper off with the camera?
I'm sorry for the confusion. The camera is wired. It was an easy installation running the wires behind trim panels, then exiting the cab floor through an existing grommet on the floor. The camera is mounted under the camper steps. The camera has a connection approximately 2 feet from the base. When I take the camper out of the truck, I disconnect the plug and leave the camera on the camper.
Thanks! This last weekend I pushed my camper through really thick brush and found a perfect spot on the edge of Lake Superior in the Michigan UP. I'm glad I brought the Sawzall. That should be a cool video! Tomorrow the video has my daughter driving the camper through the Superior Nation Forest. She was a natural om camera, much better then me! We found an absolute gem of a spot to!
@@KennyOfAllTrades I will be looking forward to your next video. We love taking our truck camper to the UP. Have spent some time along the southern shore, Pictured Rocks, Keweenaw Peninsula, Apostle Islands, Whitefish Bay area, etc but, have not gone more than about 30 miles north of Duluth, Mn. Guess its time to check out the North Shore.
Not yet. The short bed campers have always worked for me. If I upgraded to an 8ft bed I would go with a dually. I think an extended cab, dually would be a good length. My truck is just barely capable of fitting in a stander parking lot spot. Anything longer and I would have to look for special RV and boat parking.
I did a ton of research and found this one. The "Promido" bought on Amazon. It has a front facing camera as well. You can split the rear view mirror to show both feeds. The camera is fully adjustable, By touching the mirror you can move the camera up and down at a really wide camera angle. It records video and audio along with GPS speed for three minutes at a time.. It retains the information until the micro sd card is full, then automatically dumps footage and records over the old footage. In my case I can look back at footage for about a month before it gets written over. If you need the footage for some reason you can take out the micro SD and view all the vids on a computer. It is a life saver with a truck camper.
The reflectix in your roof skylight, is it a stick on or it just appeared to be. How do they stay up against the glass? Love your comment about running a meth lab! Lol
I just cut them a little bit larger so when they get pushed into the frame they hold him place. If you cut them smaller than the frame they'll just follow. So just cut them a little bit bigger and they will wedge in the window frame perfectly. It's funny you mention the comment. I think that's where the thumbs-down came from. Some people take it to heart when you make a comment. But honestly when I see a vehicle that is completely covered with reflex on all the windows I think of Breaking Bad. I painted mine black with the flex-all spray paint in a can. The black spray paint is like rubber and it doesn't crack when you bend it. I did that on the windows that you can see from the street.
I replaced the brakes with OEM last year. I figured if the old ones lasted 120 thousand miles why mess with anything else. I use the exhaust break when in the mountains that is a huge help on saving the breaks, I haven't noticed any odd wear and the truck stops really well. This could be a huge mistake but I haven't weighed the truck. I don't want to think " I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" I'm sure I'm over weight. But I have put on 50,000 miles with the camper in the truck without incident. " knock on wood" I've owned many diffrent truck campers in all sizes of trucks, except a dually. I've learned along the way when a truck is incapable of handling a load. This setup feels very comfortable.
Lol, it's all in our prior life experiences. It's definitely a subjective statement! Thanks for no getting offended! Lol Some people really did not like that statement...
Do you have any problems boondocking anywhere and what is that strap that's going across your slide what's the reason for that did it slide come undone or part of the track come on done
I have never had any big issues while boondocking. Once in Iowa, I had the knock on the door, telling me I was not allowed to overnight park. A few weeks ago, I had a truck driver upset that I was parked at a rest stop. He said I was acting suspicious parking where I was. He took pictures of the truck and camper and then drove away in his truck. That was an odd experience. I put the strap on the slideout after taking my truck down countless miles of wasjed out logging roads. I have never had any issues with the slide. I thought I would help take away stress on the slide unit by strapping it up. I don't know if it is doing anything; I've never seen anyone else do it. It's basically to support the slide while driving on bumpy rutted trails.
I'm getting ready to do this too partner when people come up on you and get mad because you're doing something that they don't like I don't know if I can handle it a lot like people can my I get a mouth on me and I'm ready to throw down and I just hope something like that don't happen it took me forever to learn how to walk away and it just seems like it's a lot peaceful it's a lot honestly and easier way to just have a better way of doing things and honestly able to breathe you know I got a friend of mine now that's doing it and he used to get panic attacks and now he hasn't had one in 2 years and he seen therapist and all that and he's even stopped that and he just there's something to this and there really is something to this I don't know if it's the you know freedom or the the relaxation of it I don't know but I'm sorry man I just rattled on but thanks a lot
I hope you enjoy your travels. The road is relaxing for me, I don't get wound up easily. I have only had a few negative interactions with people. I try to remain calm and always have a way out. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Idk if I missed it, but which model camper is this? I’ve been thinking about getting a non slide camper but this one actually has a surprising amount of room when the slide is in like you say. One of the few I’ve seen this being the case
@@KennyOfAllTrades love it! Just looked up the 811 and really like the idea of it. Being that you only put the slide out 50% of the time do you regret not having a hard sided camper? That’s the big thing I’m trying to decide right now, do I get the camper with a slide that is still useable with it in even tho it’s a bit cramped, or do I get a camper that’s hard sided and has a bit more room when in “stealth” mode? Would love to hear your thought’s
That is a great question! Initially, I was looking at a Northern Lite or Bigfoot camper. I really liked the idea of a complete fiberglass unit. After two years of looking, I could not find a camper I could afford. That was back before the pandemic. Eventually, I found a guy selling the M860 for 6 grand. Even back then, that was a really good price; Arctic Fox was my second choice of camper. Fast forward to today, I was recently in a Northern Lite, and it felt really cramped. I was shocked at how little space it had. I am really happy i have a unit with a slide. It would be really hard for me to go back to a unit with no slide out. I think the only way I would go back to a hard sided unit is if I was putting together a really light weight setup on the back of a 3/ 4-ton truck.
@@KennyOfAllTrades damn that’s really good to know! You’re selling me more and more! But there are 3 close to me, 2 that are used. A 2008 and a 2009. They are $30k and $36k. The only other one is brand new and $60k
@@Durataur There are so many things to consider when purchasing new or used. I would assume no matter how good of condition there will be some issues with a used camper, 95% of the timeissues can be resolved. I love the idea of buying new.....but 60 grand is a lot of money and the last two years quality has declined coming off the line. It would be really exciting if I was in the market for a camper....but then again I don't envy all the decisions you will have to make.
I do have a vacuum as well. They both have their advantages. But yes, the blower is way more efficient and better capable of getting all the dirt road dust out of the nooks and crannies.
Supper good tip! I run the torque pro app and monitor engine,Trans, and egt's temps, fuel pressure and balance rates among other things. The truck is constantly talking to you, you just got to know how to listen.
When the bump stops are resting on the upper overloads, the truck feels more planted to the road in the curves and high wind. It doesn't add for a ruff ride. Probably because the camper is so heavy, the overload springs still flex. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to put my thoughts into a text message. I do better talking with my hands. Check out this video. I went further into the rear suspension. ua-cam.com/video/Msqnosna8N8/v-deo.html
Well i guess i should have searched all your videos before making the gear video suggestion haha i will turn on my personal mute button and open my eyes and ears before commenting hahaha
It's a beautiful thing to watch the videos you put out no fancy fluffy stuff your not preaching or bragging any gear you have or use just honest opinions whether it works or doesn't,not that its a bad piece of gear it just doesn't fit for what you need, i like that you and i share the same ideas on nature and enjoying it without spending a fortune to do so 👍👍
Regarding purchasing anything during this “WE the people shall buy every fricking thing in sight” wife and I have given up. Everything worth having is way way overpriced or in short supply. Our gas is nearing $5 bucks a gallon as well. I’m thinking prices might just keep going up up up. Were just going to hotel it till some sort of sanity returns to our broken economy.
Im in the same boat. Hotels seem more convenient and you can travel around faster. Only drawback is not having your own bed and food in the fridge. Hopefully these prices drop, but if people keep paying these prices they wont. Same with trucks, ridiculous right now.
295/70/18 Load index 129 I think the load index 129 has the highest payload capability (4080 lbs)before stepping up to a 19.5 wheel. The reason I did not go with a 19.5 rim is because of the availability of the tires. If I do blow a tire a can find 295/70/18 all over the US. The commercial tires can be ordered but a lot of tire shops don't carry them on hand. Just my opinion.
Nitto Ridge Grappler. They do well in the snow, great in the mud, and most importantly they are super quiet on road. They are still at 12/32 with 25,000 miles.
@@KennyOfAllTrades that exactly what I am thinking of getting. I have a 08' Megacab dually. Getting her ready for the camper. Not wanting tires that are sticking out too much I am thinking 275/70 17. What do you think? Should i go bigger or smaller?
For me weight was a concern. The original tires on my 3500 were a load range 125 from the factory. They were rated around 3600 pounds per tire. I stepped up to the larger tire 295/70/18 load index 129. They are rated for 4060 pounds. That's an extra 1800 pounds of carrying capacity for the tires.
I have thought about that too. So, I tested it and found it was designed to open with a little force. I would have taken it off if there was a chance of getting trapped inside the camper. Thanks for watching!
You must be really close to having them all watched. Is it to late to tell you they all fall in a specific order? Well, only the traveling ones. Definitely let me know when you are all caught up!

Great question. The inverters draw a lot of power just sitting with no draw. The larger inverter, the larger the draw on the batteries. So I tried to match the inverter to what the power demand is. I didn't want a 3000 watt inverter only powering a TV. It would draw down the house batteries real quick.
@@KennyOfAllTrades that makes sense. Never thought of it that way.
Very informative, Kenny
Nice setup...
I love the "Don't Tread on Me 🐍" hat. 🇺🇲
Great video! Those remote air bags are awesome...probably not something I can put on my truck lol You have a bunch of cool tips :)
My next few videos have been showing a lot more tips for Truck Camper owners!
great video and channel
Great video. Thanks!
Nicely done. Subscribed...
Thanks for watching! I am sooooo new and have so much to learn, but I'm having fun!
Great tip!
Hi Kenny. I see a police patch in your back seat. Do You mind if I ask what you do for a living?
I'm fromer LE, I got out last year. I also hung my badge above the camper door. I Now work for the Department of Public Safety. The patch is off my external carrier.
1st comment on any video... nothing says rolling mobile meth lab... best one liner of the 100+ videos I m binging
@@KennyOfAllTrades awesome thank you!
What did you use for the drip channel you put around your hatches, down the side and up front on your camper? Nice channel.
I will see if I can get the Amazon link.

Thanks for the reply. Enjoy following your channel. You find some great locations to camp.
Nice setup! Ever have a need for a Dually vs single wheel?
Not yet. The short bed campers have always worked for me. If I upgraded to an 8ft bed I would go with a dually. I think an extended cab, dually would be a good length. My truck is just barely capable of fitting in a stander parking lot spot. Anything longer and I would have to look for special RV and boat parking.
Great videos! What rear view camera is that?
@@KennyOfAllTrades Awesome! Thanks Kenny!
Hey Kenny? Hows the handling and braking doing hauling all the weight? Did you do the Calculations to payload specification?
I replaced the brakes with OEM last year. I figured if the old ones lasted 120 thousand miles why mess with anything else. I use the exhaust break when in the mountains that is a huge help on saving the breaks, I haven't noticed any odd wear and the truck stops really well.
This could be a huge mistake but I haven't weighed the truck. I don't want to think " I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" I'm sure I'm over weight.
But I have put on 50,000 miles with the camper in the truck without incident. " knock on wood"
I've owned many diffrent truck campers in all sizes of trucks, except a dually. I've learned along the way when a truck is incapable of handling a load. This setup feels very comfortable.
Been using reflect bubble panels for years and have yet to be accused of running a mobile meth-lab :) Maybe it is latitude thing?
Lol, it's all in our prior life experiences. It's definitely a subjective statement!
Thanks for no getting offended! Lol
Some people really did not like that statement...
It is a model m860. Very comparable to the 811. There is a lot of space with the slide in. I keep the slide in most of the winter..
Is the dust blower much better than a vacuum cleaner?
I do have a vacuum as well. They both have their advantages. But yes, the blower is way more efficient and better capable of getting all the dirt road dust out of the nooks and crannies.
Nice! 👍✌️
Hi Kenny. Dan here. What kind of airbags and your compressor do you use? Thank you . Dan
I'm using the Load Lifter 7500xl with the Wireless one air compressor.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks
Super
Be careful pulling hills with your trans cooler being blocked. I own a 2018 3500hd.
Supper good tip! I run the torque pro app and monitor engine,Trans, and egt's temps, fuel pressure and balance rates among other things. The truck is constantly talking to you, you just got to know how to listen.
@@KennyOfAllTrades awesome! I haul a adventurer 89rbs on my cclb. Put 19.5s on the truck for the extra weight.
That is the right wheel tire setup for sure.
@@KennyOfAllTrades work in progress lol
WHAT AIR BAG SYSTEM ARE YOU USING?
For the bags I'm running Air Lift 7500XL. The air compressor is the Air Lift 74000EZ Wireless air.
@@KennyOfAllTrades Thank you! gonna run the same setup on my rig!
What year and model is your camper?
2004 Arctic Fox M860. It's was the model prior to the 811.
@@KennyOfAllTrades Thanks
Wasn’t your ride worse with out the over load touching or resting on bump stops
When the bump stops are resting on the upper overloads, the truck feels more planted to the road in the curves and high wind.
It doesn't add for a ruff ride. Probably because the camper is so heavy, the overload springs still flex. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to put my thoughts into a text message. I do better talking with my hands.
Check out this video. I went further into the rear suspension.

Well i guess i should have searched all your videos before making the gear video suggestion haha i will turn on my personal mute button and open my eyes and ears before commenting hahaha
It's all good! There's a lot of videos to look through. I hope you enjoyed it. It's one of my first videos. I should do an updated version.
It's a beautiful thing to watch the videos you put out no fancy fluffy stuff your not preaching or bragging any gear you have or use just honest opinions whether it works or doesn't,not that its a bad piece of gear it just doesn't fit for what you need, i like that you and i share the same ideas on nature and enjoying it without spending a fortune to do so 👍👍
Thanks I appreciate that!
What tire size do you run on the Duramax?
285/75/18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers
Regarding purchasing anything during this “WE the people shall buy every fricking thing in sight” wife and I have given up. Everything worth having is way way overpriced or in short supply. Our gas is nearing $5 bucks a gallon as well. I’m thinking prices might just keep going up up up. Were just going to hotel it till some sort of sanity returns to our broken economy.
You are 100 % correct! I'm happy I bought this truck and camper years ago. There's no way I could afford it today. Thanks for watching!
Im in the same boat. Hotels seem more convenient and you can travel around faster. Only drawback is not having your own bed and food in the fridge. Hopefully these prices drop, but if people keep paying these prices they wont. Same with trucks, ridiculous right now.
What is your tires size?
295/70/18
Load index 129
I think the load index 129 has the highest payload capability (4080 lbs)before stepping up to a 19.5 wheel.
The reason I did not go with a 19.5 rim is because of the availability of the tires. If I do blow a tire a can find 295/70/18 all over the US. The commercial tires can be ordered but a lot of tire shops don't carry them on hand. Just my opinion.
@@KennyOfAllTrades thank you! What brand are the tires? Are they good in snow?
I would be scared to use a large grab handle . If a child pushes it in you are trapped in your camper .
I have thought about that too. So, I tested it and found it was designed to open with a little force. I would have taken it off if there was a chance of getting trapped inside the camper. Thanks for watching!
