Suffice to say I was a bit starry eyed. One day in comes Brad May and he exuded a degree of confidence and respect that I had never seen. During a training camp scrimmage, the resident tough guy (who was most likely on roids--he was huge) who was desperate to make the team challenged the opposing bench to a fight. He just stood there with gloves off and said, "C'mon! I'll take on every one of you." @Jim Hammill How about listening to the other side first before making perhaps misleading conclusions? Yakupov's first season was actually pretty good. However, there was major coach change after his very first season but where... Yakupov wasn't really in the picture for the way the new coach saw his team would operate from then onwards. Thus, there were, for instance, cases where Yakupov was sat on the bench half-time but the very next day with coach approaching Yakupov and say "Hey, sorry, I first saw the mistake so decided to remove you from the game but apparently there were no mistakes at all so my bad". Thus, that's just one point to dispute your claims. Moreover, when Yakupov returned to SKA and SKA's coaches saw him within the team there was more involvement into the play so he did, indeed, had a great season after few years struggling to excel his game in NHL. Thus, all in all, perhaps, there were personal mistakes on his side as he was still quite young, not well versed in politics and stuff like that and.... was predomintanly getting used to North American culture. However, it doesn't change the fact that if someone started talking in the same boorish tione as Burke's talks to their interviewers in this interview, unless others wouldn't be as lackеy as as these bunch of yahoo's who completely ready to suck his cock, not sure if their attitude was any different from Yakupov's... Thus, the point I am trying to make is that if you were to listen to Yakupov's interview and hear his viewpoint is that up until you are in top of the league like, for instance, Ovechkin who's been with his team for years so has an enormous amount of respect, trust and that armour to protect himself from even these coach tricks that would not be allowed by Company owner's if they knew what's going on on a daily basis, the more newer and lesser experienced players, i.e. the more middle level player who are doing 80% of all work for the team to perform, are not really under that protection, especially, say in lower ranking teams as Edmonton at the time when Yakupov was there.. thus, there was no way for them not only to excel at large for themselves but to even to protect at a very minimum in order to play every single game staying in top optimal form and shape at the same time to be able to perform at a maximum abilities.
I remember myself and several teenage friends meeting Pat Quinn on Robson street somewhere around Christmas 93'. We were all "Punk Rock" Mohawks, leather, spikes ect ect.....I recognized him and said: "Hey! You're the Canucks GM, right?" He was like: "Yeah, how are you boys doing" He had an aura about him so we we're all like "FINE SIR!" And he says, "Alright, Merry Christmas, you boys stay out of trouble" We're all like "YES SIR!"......Hell of a nice guy.....but I wouldn't have wanted to be on his bad side.....That guy could COMMAND respect without trying.

Brian Burke saying he wanted to be Pat. What an honor. Leafs should have never hired Ferguson and let Pat go. Even though Pat hired him to be his boss.
JFJ probably could have been an adequate GM. But as a rookie executive, places like Toronto and Montreal are bad news, especially back then. Ownership was controlling, the fans were ravenous and had high expectations with a demand for instant gratification. Ferguson got eaten alive in that city and dug his own grave with terrible personnel decisions and unwillingness to stand up to his bosses. Had he been brought along slowly in a quiet market, he might have turned out okay. But good lord did he screw the pooch in Toronto. And somehow, his successor was even worse. when Burke said Quinn turned to him and said "we need another first!" regarding Brad May, they did. They had #2 picked Petr Nedved...they also had #18...they picked Shawn Antoski ...May went 14th to the Sabres...
Let’s be honest. It was a smart move. Who wants to play for Burke. He’s a smart kid to purposely throw that interview. “He was defiant, obnoxious and sullen” = and Burke didn’t love the kid for that attitude ??? That perfectly describes Burke.

love the Darius kasperaitis mention. as an islander fan I enjoyed his time on the team...not much else to like at the time...my buddy at the time was one of the guys who cleaned his pool . he went there once around 12:30 on a Tuesday...Kasper and mick vukota were sitting around a table on the deck finishing off a bottle of vodka
"it's all scripted now. Agents tell them, well who's your hero? My dad." Exactly 2 minutes later: "I've had 3 (mentors) Well 4. My dad was my mentor and I idolized him!"
6:00 what is he talking about? he was The Canucks GM in 2003, the 6-8th pick in the draft was San Jose, Nashville and Atlanta. Did he work for any of those teams in 2003? I can't find it anywhere.
Morgan Rielly was probably the best player to come out of that draft year. These last few years he's really proven to be a key part of that Leafs blue line. He isn't just a prolific scorer for a defenceman, he has such acute situational awareness and is a great skater. I remember in a game against the Lightning last year, his teammates made a brutal line change which resulted in a 3-on-1 where the Lightning scored. But the one guy on the ice who didn't go for a change was Rielly. He saw the situation unfold and I think actually called for his teammates to stay on the ice. It's one of those little things where even when a situation doesn't go well, he made the right play.
@Marvin Santana Hertl isn't bad, but I don't think he's Rielly. Rielly had 72 points as a defenceman his last full year and was fifth in Norris voting. I don't think Hertl has ever had a year like that. Rielly rivals Hertl in career points and he's a defenceman. He's also become much better defensively, playing a role Hertl isn't asked to.
I was a journalist at the 2011 U18 World Championship in Germany, and it was apparent then that Nail Yakupov was pretty weird. After a win, he got angry because he didn't understand a question and went into a nonsensical rant. Then when someone asked him why he wasn't happy, he said he was happy but Russians never smile, even when they're happy, and he still seemed quite agitated. Almost shaking.
The moment he opened his mouth about playing for KHL. I would have banished him to the minors and sent a qualifying offer when he became RFA. He was damn lucky to have an NHL career.
Yakupov might be the biggest bust in NHL history. He was highly touted and viewed as a can't-miss prospect during his draft year. Remember all the "Fail for Nail" tanking talk that was happening during his draft year? Fans normally only want their teams to tank when it is a big-time prospect being touted as 1st overall.
It’s ok. McDavid washed away the Yakupov stank. Nowadays it’s like, “Hey, remember Yakupov?”. And a lot of fans don’t. If they do, they remember what an epic fail he was. As a lifelong Oilers fan, I remember Yakupov. That was a pretty weak draft year, and he was compared to Nuge a lot. Nuge developed into a much better player than Yak ever will be.
Burke is a living legend. Yak was never going to cut it in the NHL. There were scouting reports saying (TheHockeyNews?) that he could have trouble in the states
You only get one chance to make a first impression. I’m only just seeing this now in December 2024. This is a stunning revelation to me. The Oilers swung and missed BIG TIME in the 2012 draft. That draft class was one of the worst we had in the 21st century.

Burke is more than a national treasure, he's a hockey treasure. absolutely a living legend, glad i got to walk the earth the same time as a man like that.
You have to question your priorities
Great interview. Burke is a legend.
I wonder if teams just lie and say we had him number one the whole time
I think thats true but in that draft...riley is better than the top 3 so I really believe they had riley number 1
not even a Leafs fan but Burkie totally said it on draft day. i remember laughing at him. he was absolutely right though.
I was skeptical when he said that back in 2012, but in hindsight it wasn't that farfetched.
when Burke said Quinn turned to him and said "we need another first!" regarding Brad May, they did. They had #2 picked Petr Nedved...they also had #18...they picked Shawn Antoski ...May went 14th to the Sabres...
Love the way he lights up talking about Pat Quinn!
I feel like I've already seen this clip. Release the full one!
Cool insight. I had no idea interviews mattered that much
So that’s what happened to Ryan Whitney! Man he was awesome for a while. It’s too bad he didn’t win with the Pens in 09
Great interview 👍. I love spitting chicklets.
His Pat Quinn comments were awesome 👍
"No free ads" on the water bottles huh Biz? hahaha
Love the look: Burke un-tied.
Let’s be honest. It was a smart move. Who wants to play for Burke. He’s a smart kid to purposely throw that interview.
“He was defiant, obnoxious and sullen” = and Burke didn’t love the kid for that attitude ??? That perfectly describes Burke.
I love burkey so much I’ll listen to any story he tells
Wow! I love this "inside" stuff!
“you’re not from like edina minnesota” cracks me up lmaooo
"Real men wear cufflings." I don't know why, that's the funniest thing I've heard in awhile.
"Cuff links," my friend.
gamacrit thank you for being nice about it!
Please please upload the whole interview, we need some Burkey in these trying times🦔
Brian "The Hurricanes need to stop having fun" Burke
Can't be right 100 percent of the time.
Yeah but there little ice capades show was kinda stupid. Is playing hockey not fun enough for you that you have to play duck duck goose on the ice afterwards
I miss Burke as a Leaf GM he got screwed! Met him in person, what a great guy.
I met yakapov And galch in the ohl when they played for sarnia i found galch very friendly i also met gabriel landeskog of the kitchener rangers And he was very friendly
love the Darius kasperaitis mention. as an islander fan I enjoyed his time on the team...not much else to like at the time...my buddy at the time was one of the guys who cleaned his pool . he went there once around 12:30 on a Tuesday...Kasper and mick vukota were sitting around a table on the deck finishing off a bottle of vodka
"it's all scripted now. Agents tell them, well who's your hero? My dad." Exactly 2 minutes later: "I've had 3 (mentors) Well 4. My dad was my mentor and I idolized him!"
Perfect guy for a new coachs corner!
Yak and Puljujarvi both have the same attitude both drafted by the same team interesting
6:00 what is he talking about? he was The Canucks GM in 2003, the 6-8th pick in the draft was San Jose, Nashville and Atlanta. Did he work for any of those teams in 2003? I can't find it anywhere.
Brian Burke - half of the team that broke the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"Real men wear cuff links," Burke quotes to 3 men in hoodies & t-shirts.🤣
He's also become much better defensively, playing a role Hertl isn't asked to.
can we get like a full hour of this??
first time I saw Burke smile!
Brian Burke is the man. Much respect for all he does for hockey
Everytime he speaks, we listen
You know this is gonna be good the second you see Burkey have his tie in "NO F*CKS GIVEN" mode.
Burkieee...guy is soo well respected within the league. Wish buffalo had a guy like that running the show
Burke, you're so amazing. The man with one Stanley cup by a team built by another GM.
I was in Moose Jaw and saw Burke watching Reilly’s playoff game I think the old man forgot that
I was a journalist at the 2011 U18 World Championship in Germany, and it was apparent then that Nail Yakupov was pretty weird.
Interesting, when he told this story last year in sportsnet he wouldn’t say that it was Thomas Vanek that came in with the cocky attitude.
@Christopher Palmer Also Burke's team (the nucks) were picking 23rd
I
Brian Burke with his patented NHL Priest look
Yakupov might be the biggest bust in NHL history. He was highly touted and viewed as a can't-miss prospect during his draft year. Remember all the "Fail for Nail" tanking talk that was happening during his draft year? Fans normally only want their teams to tank when it is a big-time prospect being touted as 1st overall.
Joe Shannon I believe the biggest bust in NHL history goes to Alexander Daigle. Yakupov is a close 2nd.
Is there a whole BB interview somewhere?
Burke is a living legend. Yak was never going to cut it in the NHL. There were scouting reports saying (TheHockeyNews?) that he could have trouble in the states
bapjap Burke is smart but he sucks as a GM. It's like his wisdom and smarts go out the window.
Love it boys keep it coming
Well Brian your interview for Team USA in 2014 was so bad the team you sent to Sochi forgot a medal.
Well in a redraft the top 3 would probably be
1.) Filip Forsberg
2.) Morgan Rielly
3.) Connor Hellbuyck
I would love to meet Burkie! He’s had an amazing career!
You only get one chance to make a first impression. I’m only just seeing this now in December 2024. This is a stunning revelation to me. The Oilers swung and missed BIG TIME in the 2012 draft. That draft class was one of the worst we had in the 21st century.
