Next best player? Of the three Zetterberg has the highest pts/gm, g/gm both in the regular season and especially playoffs, has the elusive Stanley Cup with the Conn Smythe Trophy.
To be fair. Zetterberg was close to an unknown when he was drafted. He matured later on in the Swedish Hockey League.. Sedin´s was the buzz of Europe since they were like 14.
Patrik Stephan was the number one pick. One of the best hockey facts ever involves Stephan. He missed an epic empty net goal against the Oilers while playing with the Dallas Stars (look it up). That single point caused the Oilers to finish 2nd last in the league which made them lose the #1 pick in the draft that year. That #1 was Patrick Kane (Stanley Cup winner). So if Pat Stephan scored that empty netter, Patrick Kane would have been an Oiler.
First, some corrections: 1. Oilers did not finish 2nd last in the league in 2006-07. That'd be Phoenix with 67 points. 2. Oilers finished even with Chicago on points, but their better goal differential put them ahead in season rankings. Chicago would end up picking 5th overall and Oilers 6th overall. 3. Chicago won the lottery to move up to #1 to pick Kane. Would Oilers have won the lottery had they finished at #5 instead of #6? Maybe, maybe not. It's a lottery. Then again, they could have won the lottery that year and ended up with Kane at #2, assuming Philly picked 1st and JvR instead of Kane. Lots of hypothetical here. I'd worry more about the three (okay, two, cos Hall is a good pick, but Seguin is better) straight 1st overalls that landed the Oilers RNH and Yakupov instead of vastly better players.
I've had the pleasure of meeting both Burke and Gradin. Burke way back in 2000-01 at a Seattle Thunderbirds game where I had him sign my ticket, lol. Then Gradin a couple years ago at the Everett WHL pre-season tourney. I spotted his Canucks jacket, asked him if he worked for them, and we started talking, and he eventually revealed his name. He was humble enough not to say "I found the Sedins".
growing up in vancouver watching the sedins get picked and then watched them throughout their entire careers i get so much nostalgia. they are some of the best people in the world, and are very different from the usual hockey mould, which a lot of haters discredit them for not being tough enough. The season tortorella coached in vancouver was an interesting experiment, because i think rarely does tortorella find no fault in a superstar particularly with their attitudes/work ethic, but he only had great things to say about the sedins. i feel bad for them that they weren't able to win the cup - i would argue they deserve it as much as any player ever in the league.
I am so happy I stumbled across the "Hey Brukie" series, It has opened up a whole new world of interviews and insights from a GM that you just don't see. I would love to see more GMs speak so openly but it just doesn't happen. A guy like Glen Sather never gives an interview. The last impromptu interview Slats gave was a teenage kid who grabbed him at the airport and got a few seconds with him.
I love how burke brings up the david poile reference, i mean he’s great guy and if you can respect him even though he hasn’t won the cup then you definitely should be able to do the same for the sedins
@@AzNightmare Same here. But that's Burkie. As tough as he was with the media, he's a super nice guy and won't say bad things about his players. I'm sure he's thinking of all the positive leadership qualities of Messier.
Ah Burkie is rough around the edges, tell it like it is guy. I admire that, as well as being pretty humble and does a lot of charity work for good causes. The new game has passed him by, but he did do a hell of a good job with some teams.
Vancouver gave up a lot to keep them together and it was well worth it for them. They got two future hall of famers. It's just sad they couldnt win a Cup.
I was a timekeeper at Burnaby Winter Club for a couple of years, dating a hockey player and whatever - Ryan Beech, the younger brother of Kris Beech, played in a group I looked after - Kris showed up just to skate with his brother one day? I was at work early and saw this giant man skating from one end of the rink to the other in four strides, shooting corners effortlessly and just such a magnificent presence? He was amazing.
Great interview, still not completely clear how Burkie fanagled it but I will do some more research. The one thing I would ask Burke or anyone now is considering how important high first round picks are now in 2018 could a deal like this ever even be done now? Going back 18 years, draft picks weren't coveted like they are now, would a team be prepared to deal away a lot of players to make a deal for twins like that now?
He kind of hits on it in the interview, admitting that at the time it was a very risky move to trade Bryan mcCabe, a blue chip young d man who was a centerpiece to the Trevor Linden trade the previous year, AND a first rounder to chicago before even moving up to number 1.. I remember in a past interview him saying if he didn't have the extra first round pick from the Bure trade he likely would not have pulled it off.
Yes, even trading away a guy like McCabe would be a big gamble for sure, Bryan being a big, solid d-man during an era when you needed all kinds of big, solid d-men.
How do you still not know how this was done? He explains it. Vancouver was always picking 3rd already. They traded Mccabe and a future 1st for Chicago's 4th over all pick. Canucks now have 3 and 4. They traded the 4th overall and 2 3rd round picks for the 1st over all pick. Now the Canucks have 1 and 3. They then traded 1 to Atlanta for a 3rd round pick and 2nd over all and the condition that Atlanta does not take a Sedin.
He basically says at the start the only reason he was able to do it was because it was a weak draft, particularly in the first round. So the answer is probably no.
I don't think it's fair to say Henrik is better than Daniel. Daniel has every bit as much playmaking and passing ability as Henrik, equal puck skills, and a better shot. Henrik plays a more important position that allows him to distribute the puck more. It's Daniel's shooting ability against Henrik's position, and I think it's close. Plus although the Sedins aren't exactly nasty, Daniel does have a little bit more "edge" to his game. I think Daniel still putting up similar totals to Henrik despite missing games and getting his brains scrambled should highlight that he's every bit as good as Henrik and potentially better, but it's so close it's really not worth arguing one against the other. Honestly one of the most interesting things about the twins is how unbelievably comparable they as as players, identical on and off the ice.
Cameron Exactly statistically they have the same amount of points, Henrik has more assists Daniel has more GOALS and the better shot so why is Henrik automatically assumed better?
Ryan Trylsson That is true but Daniel has an disadvantage when using that point. Henrik *may* have struggle less since no matter what he has played with a winger who is not Daniel. Daniel has always had his center be Henrik. Positions don’t matter that much in the offensive zone as cycling is the norm now and centers are in the corners just as much but there would be some relativity with what position was missed.
well sure. But at the time who the hell would have said it? Classic hindsight. And with Detroit, it's not so much the drafting as much as the job they do to develop them. If Zetterberg was so highly-touted at the time, every team including Detroit would not have passed on him six freaking times.
El Fuego 52 It's not about taking Zetterberg over the Sedins, is about taking a great player in the 7th round. Sedins were #2 and #3, Detroit didn't have such a draft position.
It's about getting lucky with a guy who turned out to be a great player in the 7th round. If there were any skill whatsoever in selecting him then detroit would have taken him in an earlier round. A fluke. Any pick outside of a "generational" talent that turns into a top NHL player is a fluke. And even the "generational" talents fail from time to time.
Interesting to hear Brian Burke not liking high numbers. This must have been Pat Quinn's influence when Burke use to work for him. Quinn also didn't like high numbers.
High numbers are "new school" player mentality. It is said, unless you are a sure-fire Gretzky or Lemieux, you don't wear a high number. It's pretty hot doggy
I remember the Sedins and Luongo were the only three canucks I didn't hate during the three-year Chicago Vancouver playoff rivalry. Being from Chicago I would say we won the rivalry.
The man who played a big role? Ahem! The only man who could've ever at that time in hockey history have the balls to ever do it - Burke is best. Thank you Thomas Gradin and Mark Crawford!
I remember Glen Sather, taking a guy the same year Sedins were starting, saying he took the player because he said "I hate the Sedins". Anyone remember his name No? Me neither.
Atlanta the first expansion team to ever pick first? What about buffalo picking Perrault and Canucks getting screwed in that draft too? Or did Buffalo join the year before? Either way.. also San Jose got Marleau 2nd in their first year then traded for Thornton who was picked first that year. Tampa drafted Lecavalier first but wasn’t their first year pretty sure. Tampa’s gotten Lecavalier and Stamkos before we can get a 1st overall pick wtf
A healthier Canucks squad woulda wiped the floor with the Bruins no problem - Kesler who carried the team in the Nashville series was totally banged up - Hamuis, the best defensiveman was out - I think Salo was done - we were so banged up and Boston was healthy except Nathan Horton... and ya Rome got the book thrown at him... and tossed out for the series... we stopped scoring goals

Is this common or were these players just over hyped and when it came down to it they couldent perform in the NHL. EDIT: Okey Patrik Stefan hade a concussion problem that makes sense then for him atleast.
Imo olympic gold or best on best international play such as world cup ect.. ( best on best tho ) is just as important as a stanley cup. No matter how you try to break it down. I know stanley cup is a grind and is harder to win but olympic competition is absolute best on best there are no bad players there. I personally would rather win a cup if i was a player but a Gold medal imo is ever bit as good.
I love that Burke said what he did about the Stanley Cup stigma for a players legacy. However, I have to say that I think he's in the minority with his opinion. Look at the difference in perspective and respect that Ovechkin received from the years just before winning the cup and then immediately after finally winning the cup. I'm not saying anyone thought he wasn't a first ballot HOFmer, but his overall legacy was saved in 2018. Or look at Toews being named to the NHL's top 100 list. Now he's a great player and leader too, but when considering his individual achievements/awards along with his stats, do you really think he'd have even been considered for that list of he wasn't the captain of a 3-time championship team?
Wasn't there still a risk that Atlanta would have drafted one of them? Was it pretty much "Automatic" that Stefan was gonna be the #1 pick ? (So strange in hindsight lol)
Vancouver had #3 already. They traded McCabe and a future 1st round pick for #4 from Chicago. They now have 3 and 4. They traded #4 and 2 3rd round picks for #1 overall with Tampa Bay. They now have #1 and #3. Brian didn't want to go up twice, so he traded #1 to Atlanta for #2 and a 3rd round pick and the condition that Atlanta can not draft a Sedin. Vancouver has 2 and 3 now and they drafted both
BoeserForCalder was quite complicated but basically went like this: VAN had 3rd OA, they traded McCabe + 2000 1st rd pick to CHI for CHI's 4th OA. TBL held the 1st OA and ATL held 2nd OA. VAN traded their 4th OA + a couple of late rd picks to TBL and got TBL's #1 pick. They now have picks 1 and 3, they then traded down with ATL with the only condition that ATL would draft Stefan. That's how they got 2nd and 3rd OA.
BoeserForCalder what I'm most surprised about this video is learning that they intended to draft 1, 2 and 3. Makes me wonder how Stefan's career would've gone if Vancouver had him instead.
I think, 22, 33, were for Michael Jordan number 23. Just like Beckham (football) honored Jordan with the 23. Gretzky is 99, Jordan is 23. That's how I remember it.
Too bad they didn't ask him about the other half of the coin. "Remember the more recent and relevant time you felt a winger was the most valuable piece you could add to a team?" Remember when you were so sure that giving away two first round picks for Kessel was just "the right thing to do?!" Captain Dion Phanuef what do you think......cough, cough gulp Thanks, great hockey mind 🤦🏽♂️ this guy sets franchises back hence why he isn't working with an NHL club and runs his more as a sports dj
Way to take a great story about the most interesting draft thing ever and make it about you and your feelings about your own favourite team which wasn't involved in this story at all.
I like Burke a lot, but when he uses World Championships as justification for the Sedins to go into the Hall, he loses me. The World Championship is a completely meaningless, almost random tournament whose winner is decided by NHL injuries and the NHL playoffs.
tim and sid are toxic. they’re portraying a negatively towards great people (sedins) they disregarded the great praise frome burke; only to question why the twins were being celebrated. shameful
What a humble man. He could easily take all the credit for the Sedins but he gave it all to Thomas Gradin and Marc Crawford. Burke is a beauty.

4:01 "You'll be the first expansion team to ever pick first."
Didn't the Sabres pick first in 1970 (Gilbert Perreault)?
Who did they trade for that 2nd pick ??
Wasn't there still a risk that Atlanta would have drafted one of them? Was it pretty much "Automatic" that Stefan was gonna be the #1 pick ? (So strange in hindsight lol)
Pretty crazy draft day...remember it well
Lmao Patrick Stefan as #1 draft hahahaha
If you are wondering why Daniel is being so quiet it's because that is actually Henrik.
3:50 “I pointed to the twins and said gotchya”
Humble guy
Markus Näslund and the Sedin twins are even from the same hometown
Tim Connolly would have done way better if it wasn’t for all those damn injuries . When he was 100% that dude was fantastic
I always forget Burkie's American. He seems so Canadian to me. He has dual citizenship.
The forgot Zetterberg in that list!
Its just the top 7 of 1999 draft.
Canicks won the 1999 draft by a long mile .
Canucks ' xD
Brian Burke said they werent 1st line players.. wtf
You almost wonder what it would’ve been like if they were in different teams
legends
Tomas Gradin!!!!!!!!! Old time hockey!
I always thought Danny was better than Hank
Ryan Miller too.
And Craig Anderson.
Mayan Text: POPOL VUH; was the TORCH passed to the next TWIN OF HOCKEY, That's a BIG YES!!!
How did vancouver get both?
Vancouver had #3 already. They traded McCabe and a future 1st round pick for #4 from Chicago. They now have 3 and 4. They traded #4 and 2 3rd round picks for #1 overall with Tampa Bay. They now have #1 and #3. Brian didn't want to go up twice, so he traded #1 to Atlanta for #2 and a 3rd round pick and the condition that Atlanta can not draft a Sedin. Vancouver has 2 and 3 now and they drafted both
That draft class 😂
"mark messier was a joy" the only thing brian burke ever said that was disgusting
HOF, THE TWINS
Does anyone know what the full trade was?
BoeserForCalder was quite complicated but basically went like this: VAN had 3rd OA, they traded McCabe + 2000 1st rd pick to CHI for CHI's 4th OA. TBL held the 1st OA and ATL held 2nd OA. VAN traded their 4th OA + a couple of late rd picks to TBL and got TBL's #1 pick. They now have picks 1 and 3, they then traded down with ATL with the only condition that ATL would draft Stefan. That's how they got 2nd and 3rd OA.
Thanks so much and damn Burke is a genius
BoeserForCalder what I'm most surprised about this video is learning that they intended to draft 1, 2 and 3. Makes me wonder how Stefan's career would've gone if Vancouver had him instead.
2011 would be very different with Stefan
@@anonykip you think 2 3rd round picks are late rd picks? And they got a 3rd from ATL for trading down
I think, 22, 33, were for Michael Jordan number 23.
Just like Beckham (football) honored Jordan with the 23.
Gretzky is 99, Jordan is 23. That's how I remember it.
Yeah im guessing he wont be a gm for any team, anymore.
That was a great trade. Kessel was a beauty
I like Burke a lot, but when he uses World Championships as justification for the Sedins to go into the Hall, he loses me. The World Championship is a completely meaningless, almost random tournament whose winner is decided by NHL injuries and the NHL playoffs.
Didn't Finland just win the WC without a single NHL player though?
@@Givanpes 2 Nhl players and 4 khl players
Burke's no high number thing is so stupid
i was thinking that also like what?? lol
where is the untied tie? burke clone..... no truculence
hey ... patrick allvin ... er ... wait ... oops ... my bad
Sad. Is this about sporta or money...
yah..yah...fer sere.
Lol Brian Burke
tim and sid are toxic. they’re portraying a negatively towards great people (sedins) they disregarded the great praise frome burke; only to question why the twins were being celebrated. shameful
Messier was a joy... lol hahahah
Burke flinched as the name Messier left his lips
