- With the emergence of Rivian, the electric vehicle market is no longer a one-horseless-carriage race. Indeed, the 2020s are gearing up to be the decade of the EV. According to research at Oppenheimer, EVs and plug-in electric hybrids accounted for a mere 2.2 percent of all U.S. vehicles sold in the last quarter of 2019. And only a third of those were purely electric. But that is changing rapidly. While only 5.1 million electric cars were sold worldwide in 2018, that figure is expected to surge throughout the decade-21 million units are projected to be sold in 2020, 98 million in 2025 and 253 million in 2030.
Building a new EV, however, requires investing in cutting-edge research into components like battery packs and powertrains. The only company that has been remotely successful is, of course, Tesla-and even it’s had a rough go of it. The question is: Even with $3 billion, does Rivian have enough to realize Scaringe’s electric dreams? If the mighty Tesla has faced so many detours and potholes, what makes Scaringe think that Rivian, which hasn’t made a single car, can have a smooth ride? He doesn’t. “Things will go wrong,” admits the young CEO. And Scaringe, who comes across like a mild-mannered Clark Kent type compared to Musk’s manic Tony Stark, is confident he can overcome any perils or roadblocks. After all, Rivian is built for treacherous terrain.

They actually have good tech software etc and they also have big companies backing them up to make sure they don’t go bankrupt also they have pretty good support from people not tesla level support but they might after they start delivering..

Best case scenario for every 'Tesla Killer' is they become the #2 EV maker in the market. Tesla has already secured their spot as #1, their tech and branding lead is too many miles ahead of the competition at this point.

Tesla never got this much love when it was a start up. I remember everyone saying the company wont survive and now every new start up is celebrated as a Tesla killer. Shouldn't we be celebrating innovation and creativity, surely more is better than less......right ?

True. However even if rivian wrecked tesla, I'd still be buying tesla just because his plans to go to mars and revolutionize earth. Competition is a good thing most of the time, but until rivian starts making space companies I just can't go with them.

I visited their Normal, IL factory in Spring 2018 as part of my practicum curriculum. It was an abandoned Mitsubishi factory that they planned turn into a electric car assembly line. It was very nascent during that time with few stamping machines, automated robots and a paint shop. They want to make an electric truck which I found to be very unique and promising at that time and I am happy to see they are ready to launch soon. We need as much electric cars on the roads as possible but we should also try to figure out alternative and efficient ways to produce electricity to meet this new demand because, as long as we keep using conventional energy sources to generate electricity, these electric cars would not be able to make a significant impact.

They don't have their own chargers and no battery supply factory, so there you have 2 big problems from the start. How are they going to get enough batteries, when there are already so many manufacturers struggling and delaying their production due to lack of battery supply.

Yeah I ordered mine in Nov 2018! within the first 10. I've been asking for a while now when color and other options would be available, just no real response. Rivian needs to be more open about what's going on!

@Sal B I'm a Tesla fanboy, and I think Rivian is great. So that's not the point of contention. The point is ... this video is an infomercial disguised as news. It completely ignores the huge expansion struggles that Rivian is about to face. Their design is very clever, but they're basically Tesla in 2012. Tesla struggled for years even with no real EV competition. Rivian will face the same struggles but with huge competition.

They need to extend their partnership with Amazon for the logistics to sell their vehicles online, install home chargers and service the cars on site. That type of full service would really change the automotive paradigm.

The thing about rivian is how it’s skateboard can be moved across. For example the same skate board in the vans are in the trucks and the suv, not to mention they can be easily adapted due to their design to scale vehicles, including turning these packs into power walls. The difference between Tesla and Rivian is the scale ability and depth that they have.

i would suspect that in the upcoming years you will be able to hear of an IPO from the company. start saving for some of the IPO stocks. that is what I have been doing. and if the company is bought out before an IPO, then at least there is some cash to invest in other companies or go on a vacation. with an investor like Amazon, i find it hard for the company to file bankruptcy right out of the gate. Bezos is going to make sure this thing is around for a few more years

Founded in 2009, and no production. lol Tesla, founded in 2003. made their production car in 2008. It doesn't look yet like they are trying to beat TESLA with speed.

Hope they do well. I like the look of the truck. Watched it on Long Way Up and it was impressive. Plus it’s in my home town well almost. I’m from Bloomington. In California now left in 66. But a lot of good memories.

The Rivian pickup will find a market niche among the upper middle class adventure sports crowd.
Depending on how the market plays out, they may end up stuck manufacturing EV delivery vans.
It could still become a profitable company, even so.
It is not fair to compare Rivian with Telsa, because Tesla is more than just cars. It also leading the charge into battery technology (excuse the pun) , self driving and generally vertical integration than any other car manufacturer. No one is killing Tesla this side of 2100. For this reason I am a Tesla fanboy, but I am getting a Rivian anyway. Go Rivian, you guys rock.

The underrated player is Hyundai Kia Group and their 4 Models of BEVs already on sale.
I have a question, given that towing reduces range for all vehicles, can trailers/caravans/floats etc have additional battery packs with EV motors thereby assisting and potentially increasing the range and not decreasing it. By feeding charge back into the EVs. This would be more doable than in the case of Petrol/Diesel vehicles, But it could still benefit combustible vehicles, if they were converted into hybrids. Any thoughts?

Fast forward 2 years, they’re still catching up but slightly ahead of ford, we’ll see if they fall behind or stay mostly in commercial space, cargo vans etc.

@@Stutterstun I will share. After all it's in my best interest to share with you the problem he didn't share in enough detail. There is a huge, no, major flaw in this truck, and that flaw is something, something that is big. And that flaw is Rivians inability to share the flaw, just as the original commenter.
The flaw is the price, specs and range not to mention the small bed size and lack of a dedicated charging network.
It's not really a competition. For one the market is way larger than Tesla and Rivian combined can cover. For another these two aren't even vying for the same demographic or can you see someone going for the rivian also going for the cybertruck (or vice versa)?
this is the kind of pickups that some people drive as a car, not use as a truck.
Self driving? Charging network?
Everyone is complaining about time and rivals. These things take time. It's not just a car it's a enormous piece of software too. Most car companies aren't taking software as seriously as Rivian and Tesla. Give it some time and it will come out (granted a bit of delay with the virus).
As far as rivals go, Rivian is more competing against Jeep and Land Rover. It's an adventure vehicle Tesla's brand is anything but adventure. Even the Cyber truck isn't an adventure brand. It's built as a tank for outdoors and heavy lifting but it's aesthetic design is anything but adventure.
I really want them to suceed. But i doubt Rivian will be a mass produced brand to consumers. They will be a Drive Train Supplier & Commercial Vehicle contractor. Those are areas where they can carve out safe market. At most their Rivian Adventure Vehicles will be a halo product for their real business.

I don't see Rivian and Tesla as competitors. They're targeting different market niches. Models X & Y are crossovers, R1S is an SUV. Cybertruck targets the Hummer buyer, R1T the Ridgeline. They don't compete with one another, they complement one another.

@@ogkingpin1962 Tesla cant keep up with their own projects battery demand(semi, roadster need a lot of batteries), so in the near future they will be using the batteries for themselves, until they ramp up.

They already have, they are getting Cells from Samsung SDI. Due to poor reputation (Galaxy Note 7) not many Legacy Automakers are using them. But Tesla used them for Power Packs. Rivian imports those Cells and builds their own Battery packs.

Tesla is a lead in the EV world but they alone can’t possibly replace the entire worlds ice vehicles.
We need competition to drive down prices and that includes an actual affordable Tesla for the masses.

Rivian are awesome and I really hope they succeed but for the article to say that they along with Tesla are the only serious players in the EV market is a joke. They haven't sold any cars yet when multiple legacy automakers have sold tens of thousands of EV's already. And to put them on a par with Tesla is also ridiculous. Tesla is so far ahead at the moment. Sure, maybe Rivian will catch them in time but currently Rivian are selling zero cars and Tesla sell thousands a month.

To be call tesla rivial, they need a car similar in specs and techs. Also they need to be able to mass produce their vehicles. Tesla makes hundred thousands cars a year. It doesn't matter if the cybertruck is produce 200k a year while rivian is 30 or 40k. Big big different with similar price point. (The base version of.cybertruck is 39k, yes but i compare the dual motors and tri motors

A rival is much more than 'temporary cute cars'. Way more.
There are many regular car manufactures that are and have made electric cars. This editorial makes it appear as they never existed and it’s only Tesla and Rivian. If GM and Ford make an electric car/truck that is below the affordability of these manufactures and long range then they will eventually rule the market. There are dealerships across the country that can service these vehicles, the same cannot be said with Rivian and Tesla, huge disadvantage.

Elon was nice when designing his cyber truck to look nothing like a traditional truck, probably so Rivian didn't go bankrupt and now this creates competition for both companies!

Too similar to existing trucks that have very strong brand loyalty. There is not really a good case to make someone jump over to buy one. Cyber Truck is the one to buy.
Just as Tesla painfully experienced, designing and prototyping the product is only 10% of the journey, that's what Rivian and countless of failed auto startups have achieved. Production, charging infrastructure, service centers, software/AI, and battery supply are the real challenge which all these 'rivals' need to overcome.
First This is not a truck it does not have toughness that needed to be a truck .this is just a crossover in truck shape...

Why do you guys always want to pitch them against Tesla? I think what they are proposing is great and different from what Tesla is doing, it doesn't mean in anyway that Tesla is lagging. They are a great car company without being compared to Tesla.

OK. I've keeping track of the reviews of the Rivian products and so far there hasn't been a single third party test drive--NONE--not even a ride-along! The company has been very very careful to create a lot of buzz with the automotive press basically leveraging Tesla's reputation/product and the media's desire to report on ANYTHING that might give Tesla competition. I'm growing a little leery about this company and its claims
"ev market a one horseless carriage race"? Interesting. Everyone keeps talking about Tesla killers and none are really competing with Tesla despite attempts from the likes of Jaguar, BMW & Porsche.. Rivian is set to release its pick up, that's great. But it isn't doing anything that Tesla hasn't done already and it is releasing one vehicle, which we haven't seen come off a real assembly line yet, and Tesla has 4 cars in production with a truck that beats Rivian's specs on the way. Competition good, Rivian has money pouring in from Ford and Amazon. Still, Tesla is the company to beat.

Even if they finish building the plant, how will they produce enough batteries to make these cars? Every challenge that Tesla faced, Rivian will also. They can only follow behind big brother Tesla. Tesla created the innovation, branding and vertical integration. Throwing money at a company is one thing, actual execution is where the genius work needs to happen.

-extensive and increasing superchagers
-Autonomous software
-Stable battery production
-Vertical Intergration manufacturing
-Battery technology
-Constantly innovating
-Having multiple (gigafactories)
-Over the air software update and performance
-Great price and performance
Other players dont even have their own charging network and rely on public charging point or if they believe in sustainable transportation,they can use tesla's supercharging network without have a big pride and ego

When I buy a tesla I'm helping us get to mars, get internet across the globe, and I get a clean ride. When I buy a rivian it's just going towards another car company. In most cases I support competition, but this competition isn't helping humanity as much as tesla

but me, personally, my, you know OPINION.. is that I'd buy a tesla to support internet, solar energy, and space travel for the planet. As I've stated before I'll buy a rivian once they get they choose to involve themselves in the betterment of humanity. Vans for amazon is a good start. But investing in graphene research is also a good idea.
