What a great interview. Objective and constructive. Well done as always, M! Just took a 2,000 mile road trip to celebrate 6 months in our R1S and it couldn’t have been more seamless. We even got to use one of the first RAN sites on the east coast (Augusta). Best vehicle we have ever owned. RJ is very likable. I can’t imagine the pressure he must be under. The product sells itself as it is just so good. It is now a question of scale - can Rivian scale up enough to become profitable. Right now it is loosing money on every R1T and R1S. That is normal (same happened with Tesla for years) but with luck Rivian can grow enough to have healthy profit margins. I wish it the best of luck.
Related to your comment, I'm curious why the R1S and R1T don't share the same chassis. I don't get why they decided to make the R1S so much shorter and different. Seems like such commonality could have saved them a lot of money.
Dear RJ, Good interview. I’m very pleased with both S and T. Hoping for an EDV camper in future. We need At least 8 Rivian chargers in Chicago area, 3 in city one 5-10 miles out on 90,94,290, 55, 57, 80. Thank you
I don't want CarPlay because "CarPlay is better than OEM" - I want CarPlay because it allows me to have consistent UI experience across all my vehicles, and to support features and services outside what the vehicle OEM offers. Sure, Rivian offers their own maps, but what if I want to use Waze? Sure, Rivian offers TuneIn, but what if I want Apple Music? What if I want services Rivian doesn't offer at all like Zoom? CarPlay is a lot faster to add things than built-in services. I don't want to rely on the carmakers to add things. It creates inconsistent experiences. CarPlay means a consistent experience across vehicles. I've had multiple CarPlay vehicles, and I've had a Tesla and a Rivian. Yes, Tesla and Rivian's built-in systems are better than Ford and BMW and Subaru's; and some features are arguably better than CarPlay; but CarPlay is consistent and reliable across Ford and BMW and Subaru. And CarPlay can do things that neither Tesla nor Rivian can do. Adding CarPlay doesn't make your system worse. Just add CarPlay and give people the choice.
Thank you! Could not agree more. Not adding it and saying that it is so that they can get better is a lame excuse. Add Carplay AND continue to make your UI better, when the Rivian UI is better than Carplay, then we will use it more, but until then just add it and show that Rivian is listening.

I love my R1T with the exception of missing carplay/android auto. I don't understand this idea that if you add that you can't have your own good infotainment. RJ asking Marques questions as well just shows you how much he truly cares about how the consumers feel towards his products. As a big Tesla fan I’m actually really looking forward to what Rivian can bring to the table. I have no doubt it could be a nice Apple vs Android like “rivalry” that will only make both brands push each other to improve and be the best.
Perfect recorder for something like this, you can set it to 32bit Float and have zero need to worry about clipping, bring it into an audio software, even out the highs and lows and your ready to go. Audio recording is amazing today!
Excellent interview, very insightful and overview of how Rivian approaches balancing innovation, investment, and future products. I made the switch from an BMW x4 to Tesla MY in early 2022 and have taken it surfishing and love the charging network. My ideal EV would be an used R1T or future R2T depending on its size, range, and moderate off road capability as my next EV purchase; if it fits in with an active urban/suburban/trail life (motorcycle/kayaks/camping) and costs below 65k.
Something I sadly don't get to say much but that's a CEO that impresses me, he's really interested in the product and not just shareholder and the stock.
After listening to this i am so much happier with my purchase of the r1s. American made EV is awesome and the owner seems very aware of the market giving us a perfect blend of new EV style like looks, power, fuctionability but just enough old ICE style like turn signal stalks, door handles and comfortable working environment. Thank you and now im going to test your servicing department and hopefully you are nothing like Tesla!!! Oh and please build out AZ charging network in the east valley where there are still no tesla chargers either!!! GB
This was probably one of the most well thought out waveform episodes, hands down. From the questions asked, to b-roll it was great. Looking forward to more!
Apart from the CEO being a star to hear from, the questions were super helpful. Very intelligent dialog that helped me learn more about the EV topic area. Excellent!
Please please please support CarPlay and next Gen CarPlay. Add Car Key support. Rivian is nimble and high tech enough to add support for all the things. My next car requirements are EV, NextGen CarPlay, and Car Key. I’d like that car to be a Rivian
Please, Mr. Scaringe, make a REAL adventure vehicle: a Sprinter equivalent. Downsize the Amazon van about 30% and we're in. Thanks for being so upfront. SO refreshing from the usual market-speak.
That was a lot of fun and I'm impressed by RJ's savvy. He's obviously a really smart guy! The one thing I cant agree with is the decision not allow Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Two things: for $90k+, I should really be able to decide how I want to use the center console and second, it's a huge turn-off to potential customers. Just look at the controversy surrounding GMC's decision to not allow CarPlay in future vehicles. A lot of people are basically going, "Well, I just won't buy one then". And unfortunately, I'm with them.
Agree. RJ mention that the R2 platform is going to be more for the global market, I hope that Rivian brings the R2 to Australia before the end of the decade. The R2S should have a size similar to a 4-door Jeep Wrangler.
RJ, thank you so much for making such a fantastic vehicle. I own quite a bit of stock and am taking delivery of my R1S Aug-Sep. I can’t wait. I live in Salida Co and off road every week. I will definitely be putting this 4x4 to the test. I would love to have four wheel locker. I am no programmer so I am not sure how difficult this would be, but assuming each wheel has a wheel speed sensor, I would think you could write a program stating all wheels must spin at the same speed. The off road ability of this SUV is of the upmost importance to me. Off road in luxury! Thanks so much! I think creep is nice btw The flashlight and speaker is great for me camping every weekend.
What I’m saying, Rivian makes high quality products with proven demand (go out in a big tech city and walk around I guarantee you’ll see one) they have the GA plant now. Time to ramp up production and get profitable
12:18 RJ is a winner. That's the response of someone who wins. May sound strange but there is value in not giving people the experience they want. After a while, it all feels stale. Every Android no matter who makes the device generally feels the same to me. Every iPhone, yeah. It doesn't need to be that way and I think Rivian keeping their chef in-house only adds to the prestige, instead of relegating them to fast-auto, like fast-fashion. Tbh my car should be another device I own, on its own. My phone is a pleb by comparison, it has no business controlling my car's personality.
I use the speaker all the time. You can plug it in and use it as a main speaker. Whenever i travel to friends or airbnb Rivian speaker is always on. I'm glad it is the size and the quality it is.
Enjoyed the podcast. Hope the future compute platform mentioned includes building on the solid 42:46 QNX foundation with embedded cybersecurity and Amazon AWS BlackBerry IVY cloud services like tailored insurance coverage. Waiting on my R1S soon. Very exited for this new adventure.
I have some ideas for Rivian. - R1V: A mini van - R1C: A regular sedan (similar to the Toyota Corolla) - R1S-XL: A larger version of the R1S (similar to the GMC Yukon XL) - A semi-truck - A UHaul size truck - An RV service (both ready-made RVs and a custom RV service) - R1M: A motorcycle - R1A: An ATV
Hey RJ, Thanks for your time/interview with MKBHD Not sure if you read these comments. But it would be really nice to see an affordable SUV or van for road tripping. I know 4x4ing is big, but I imagine there are lots of people that at most only want to travel on roads and occasionally role into a campsite. I think of the ID BUZZ as a possible example - That thing looks fun. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for all you do.

My ideal EV would be an used R1T or future R2T depending on its size, range, and moderate off road capability as my next EV purchase; if it fits in with an active urban/suburban/trail life (motorcycle/kayaks/camping) and costs below 65k.
Something I sadly don't get to say much but that's a CEO that impresses me, he's really interested in the product and not just shareholder and the stock.
love all the rains shots in this
After listening to this i am so much happier with my purchase of the r1s. GB
How crazy is it that this is a MKBHD x Auto Focus x WF Podcast collaboration
RJ is such a breath of fresh air as a leader in the EV space.
Amen
Lol a leader in the ev space? Do you pay attention to statistics?
@@Sal3600 Um, referring to RJ rather than Rivian's position in terms of sale. But thanks for the quip.
This podcaster is soft spoken, articulate, intelligent, insightful. And Marques is pretty good too!
Marques is a top quality interviewer. Enjoyed this one a lot!
Great Interview, Marques! RJ seems really honest and down to Earth, not words I would often associate with a CEO but a welcome change of pace!
Rivian is killin it
Iorny xd
This was probably one of the most well thought out waveform episodes, hands down. From the questions asked, to b-roll it was great. Looking forward to more!
I'm pretty share this guy is the CEO of Rivian during the day and Superman at night. That was a great episode. Loved to see a down to earth CEO.
One of the First Ones.. Whoop whoop. Can’t wait to hear what it’s about today. 🎉
Love the interview. Wishing Rivian all the best, and looking forward to buying when they are released down under 🇦🇺
RJ, you are the best! I’m R1S launch edition owner, I appreciate your care about family.
Ordered the R1S few weeks ago, can't wait to receive delivery.
I think what I like most about this guy is I had NO IDEA who he was beforehand. Unlike a certain electric car guy who won't shut the hell up.
I didn’t know much about this company until your videos about them. Great work!
RJ is so proud and genuine! Love it.
As an R1T owner, no CarPlay is so disappointing.
Great interview gentleman. RJ your a leader to look up to,I want to be a CEO like your self.
Great interview. Insightful and fun. Love my R1T and I really hope they can stay alive. Such a well built truck that’s super fun to drive.
Please, Mr. Scaringe, make a REAL adventure vehicle: a Sprinter equivalent. Downsize the Amazon van about 30% and we're in.
Thanks for being so upfront. SO refreshing from the usual market-speak.
RJ is great. Obviously knowledgeable, straightforward, and candid. Happy to own my R1T.
Great video. It's early days for Rivian still, but can't wait for them to come to Australia. They would sell so well here.
Agree. RJ mention that the R2 platform is going to be more for the global market, I hope that Rivian brings the R2 to Australia before the end of the decade. The R2S should have a size similar to a 4-door Jeep Wrangler.
Just two super cool guys talking about super cool tech. Love to see it 😎
That was an awesome podcast. He answered all of those hard questions really well.
I think creep is nice btw
The flashlight and speaker is great for me camping every weekend.
Rivian having its own charging network could be a much bigger deal than realized.
What I’m saying, Rivian makes high quality products with proven demand (go out in a big tech city and walk around I guarantee you’ll see one) they have the GA plant now. Time to ramp up production and get profitable
And Tesla network supports them while they build
I felt claustrophobic for them. Unless the AC is silent, they did this interview with no circulating air 🥵
Great interview 🤗
12:18 RJ is a winner. That's the response of someone who wins. May sound strange but there is value in not giving people the experience they want. After a while, it all feels stale. Every Android no matter who makes the device generally feels the same to me. Every iPhone, yeah. It doesn't need to be that way and I think Rivian keeping their chef in-house only adds to the prestige, instead of relegating them to fast-auto, like fast-fashion. Tbh my car should be another device I own, on its own. My phone is a pleb by comparison, it has no business controlling my car's personality.
Great interview. RJ is so clear expressing concepts and very good interview from Marques. Great questions, follow up and engagement..
Anyone else waiting for Ellis to update on whether he turned his haptics off?
Needed swivel seats for this episode 😂 poor RJ was trying to make eye contact the whole time
I use the speaker all the time.
That speaker idea is magnificent! Twice have I bought a wireless speaker because I had forgotten mine at home while on vacation! So, for me is a plus!
Been looking into a new company to start investing into and this interview convinced me that rivian is my next choice
I have some ideas for Rivian.
- R1V: A mini van
- R1C: A regular sedan (similar to the Toyota Corolla)
- R1S-XL: A larger version of the R1S (similar to the GMC Yukon XL)
- A semi-truck
- A UHaul size truck
- An RV service (both ready-made RVs and a custom RV service)
- R1M: A motorcycle
- R1A: An ATV
Hey RJ,
Thanks for your time/interview with MKBHD
Not sure if you read these comments.
Thanks for all you do.
someone finally came up with a secondary use for the Binaural mic!! 😂
That R1S looks amazing. Really great to hear that there's a more affordable R2 platform coming soon.
