It’s interesting to listen to him, especially when he talks about the industry as a whole. He seems dedicated to this ev industry as a whole rather than just Rivian
Working for him I can guarantee that’s the truth
He's a visionary who is realistic
This interview would’ve been so much bester without Nilay Patel. He interrupts frequently, asks tangential questions that are often speculative and charged with opinionated descriptors like, “that’s a really nice answer, but…” and using the word “evil” to describe BMW features. While those statements and opinionated comments would be okay in a social conversation, that’s not the function of an interviewer - and it created pause in RJ as he has to focus on phrasing his responses cautiously; so as to not agree or condone the opinions of Nilay. He’s supposed to ask questions that represent the inquiries of potential Rivian customers and people intrigued by EVs. Nilay CLEARLY has no sense of being an interviewer and his over-fixation on his own interest highlight that he’s a blogger and has little-to-no experience in a professional environment. He had no business being part of this interview and ruined the experience, not just for RJ, but for the viewers. Nilay needs to stick to his editorial blogs.
Respectfully disagree. Job of journalists is to ask real questions, not flatter and feature the interviewee. If you want an entertainment interviewer, that's different.
The R1T is by far the better looking and more functional truck between them or Tesla. Great on the Rivian team for designing a beautiful vehicle
Better looking, yes, more functional, no. A 4' bed is not "functional" for a pickup.
Clearly more storage capacity in the CyberTruck Vault.

Mostly quite different customers for the two vehicles. Ditto for the Ford Lightning.

This guy doesn’t seem like he has a god complex… yet.
With this seating arrangement on the stage, I am sure the necks off everyone on the stage hurts from constant flexing.
If they could get some nice apps such as netflix, web browser etc. Expand on their service stations as I dont have one, that I would consider close. And get the power tonnuea fixed, along with re designing the wireless phone charger. I would be in line to grab one.

@@gprufino @RayoDTijuana - And now that Amazon and Rivian agreed to remove the exclusivity clause of the Rivian produced EDV pkatform only for Amazon, this will boost revenue in the near future. With Amazon currently a 17% owner of Rivian, clearly this will benefit both parties.

He kind of contradicted himself, saying there should be 20 winners in the EV market, yet insisting that Rivian and Tesla will be the only visible EV charging companies.
I came here to post my joke about how you'd have a better ROI via tax deduction from donating to public transit than you would by investing in Rivian but the CEO is so likeable that I feel bad about wanting to do that.
11:21, "potentially software-style margins" what is the source for that in the EV-only, US built-only context? Thanks. In general a good interview though.
22:40, brilliant omission of the facts regarding similar forces for the battery supply chain, as noting any of those would've forced him to acknowledge that cycling infra and trams are a far better, more sustainable option (especially for the context of public spending) than EVs.
A partnership could be agrest thing or at least get ideas and copy elons success but with your own touch or area

I don’t think he’s “ normal” he’s a genius- been legitimately working towards building a car company since he was a child. But he’s not crazy either. He seems personable and reasonable in most interviews. Notably, he credits his team and hard work and luck for Rivians wins

I've noticed something about Rivian. RJ Scaringe only has 1% ownership in Rivian. Elon Musk invested everything into Tesla. Elon Musk goes into detail about the engineering and software design. RJ Scaringe fails to mention anything innovative about the Rivian.
Rj built Rivian from scratch putting everything that he owned into it including his and his fathers house . He purposely diluted his 100% shareholding to investors and during IPO so rivian could have more capital . That’s dedication.

RJ Scaringe has a PhD in automotive engineering from MIT (prior to starting Rivian). Elon Musk has bachelor degrees in physics and economics from UPenn. Perhaps Mr. Scaringe might be slightly more knowledgeable and invested in the engineering and software design underlying the Rivian vehicles than Mr. Musk is in regards to the same topics as they apply to Tesla vehicles.
In different forums, he talks engineering all day. He’d rather talk about that. But with these interviewers, no.
He talks exactly like Elon but much more politely. Exact same verbage, exact same points. We need more people like him!

@@adidascanada416Yes, that one instance of a (supposedly) $41k repair went viral but it was an outlier. Anyway, repair shops and insurance companies are still on a learning curve.

I believe he's right when he says it's a completely different product. Also, I think there will be continued delays in production of the CyberTruck. It won't be in mass production in 2024. I also think there will be a big enough demand for both vehicles that there will continue to be a waiting list for years to come ....

it's fresh but impractical in a lot of its design. it will not sell well when there are other, prettier and more conveniently designed products.
