Another terrifying thought is his last moments. When he felt that final bit of life leave him and for the first time in so long he finally felt himself dozing off, he had to have realized that it wasn't sleep, but death.
Yeah, but imagine how peaceful and relieving that must've been to finally get that rest, I'm not sure if I'm religious or what, but I hope he's getting all the rest he needs on the other side
Thebuffcroissant ! Yeah but honestly in the moment he probably COULDN’T even think about his son. He probably just felt that sweet sensation of sleep arriving and just accepted it. I really don’t know, just captivated by his experience. So sad
What a tough guy, he realized he’d die soon so he tried reaching out to doctors for them to monitor him to research the disease, to help treat it. Can we have a moment of silence for this man
He seemed to be a talented artist and loving father. He suffered till the end. Whatever you believe I will take a moment of silence as well. I truly hope he is in a wonderful place
@sam 7 If you are talking about Richard, note how he had no clue he had a prion disease - in fact, most people don't unless there's some sort of pattern in the family. Judging by the video, the onset/trigger was the antibiotic. There's no way he could've known about this disease before he had his son. People don't normally get tested for prion disease - I dont even know if there's such a test (maybe for CJ disease but I'm unsure). If you're talking about his son, remember that Richard didn't have fatal FAMILIAL insomnia. There's a large chance his son won't have FI. Researchers, at the moment, have said that sporadic FI isn't genetic. Prions can be spontaneous. So if his son grows up and wants to have kids, he can with probably the smallest of worries.
I dunno if I would call someone going from artistic sensitive guy with a son who talks about his life to a rambling conspiracy theorist is really something I'd consider lucidity. He is articulate though.
@Rodrigo Da Silva talk what you want friend.. I'm sleeping finally normal, and tons of people who actually seeked for help instead of trusting everything they see on internet.. ✌️ Peace
Ricard said himself that what he had wasn't fatal insomnia or sporadic insomnia. The cause.. Is or seems to be just because of Cipro. He had.. 2 hours of sleep. Which is a poor and low time of sleep. But unfortunately.. ( because I imagine that.. It become really frustrating to sleep badly for you at a certain moment) he still had these 1 or 2 hours or sleep. So.. The body is fascinating isn't it.. But yea, you can't die of insomnia. Even if you just sleep 1 or 2 hours per night for months or years. You survive, yea. But if you still have the third and fourth phase of deep sleep, you can't die. Your brain fight every day to keep you awake, the body struggle to kill the cells who can make you sleepy (which is a sign of "simple" insomnia because when you suffer of ffi, your body or brain doesn't even fight for your mental health because the prion is affected), the body fight for your heart rate, temperature etc. So according to the case of Ricard, his body kept fighting every day. Harder and harder. His body fought because of his insomnia.. And his body fought against the toxicity of Cipro. But, the cipro he took was toxic and severely damaged his state of health. Indirectly, so, he didn't die because of insomnia (he said he didn't have ffi), but of the complications of the meds.. The body couldn't support it, anymore.
It reminds me of the final stages of Dementia - Where the mind was previously sub-lucid, it suddenly goes into a hyper-lucid state - thus, unlike alzheimers, the victim doesn't even gain the benefit of ignorance.
I have it every now and then and it’s scary as fuck I’d be laying there feeling wide awake but I can’t move anything and like I’d see my door push open with a shadow walking to me and I’m literally freaking out and then all a sudden it just disappears my door was open the whole time and I’m freaked out
4 months without sleeping?! My God. My anxiety induced insomnia lead me to 4 days once without sleep and I had to be hospitalized. The absolute torture of being on the verge of sleep just to be jolted awake endlessly is nightmare fuel.
After lockdown I had to return to work and had been off my meds. My anxiety made me not sleep for 2 days and when I tried to, I was awake and hallucinating demons in my room and crawling all over me. It’s crazy what happens to our mind without rest. I jolted too and sweat so much
I have a insomnia too. go see a psychiatrist and ask for Seroquel and trazodone medication these 2 medication saving my life, before that I haven't sleep about 3 month straight up. I almost die. I can't eat or taste...but right now I can sleep like 8 hour or 6 hour sometimes I sleep 10 hour so I feel good and I can eat food again the food taste good now........ Seroquel and trazodone saving my life now. other Sleep medication will not work for insomnia, my psychiatrist saving my life. if anybody outer there have a problem with insomnia don't go see your family doctor or regular doctor, go see a psychiatrist doctor they have the right medication to put you to sleep good.
what breaks my heart is that he was aware that surgeon might have been able to treat him, and he didn't reach his money goal. that's awful. I can't imagine the hopeless feeling.
There is no treatment for this disease. The neurologist he was referring too was just another person foolishly thinking if they just throw stem cells at a otherwise un-treatable disease it will somehow help. Which it never does and the idea in the case of a prion disease like fatal insomnia is especially foolish. He can only offer this in countries which have little to no overlook on efficacy of medical treatments. It would have just been wasted money.
why? he has a super rare condition which probably no one or an insanely low amount of people have. sure, it's fine to appreciate life and the small amount of years we have but that is not a good reason to think that.
This is one of the reasons to NEVER take medication without consulting a doctor first. Something that might work for someone else may not work for you at all.
70s man my bad I was talking about the part where he explains doctors prescribed the medication that left the others explained in the video, paralyzed or with neurological damage.
*correction: Unless it is over the counter (example: Tylonel), NEVER take medication without consulting with a doctor first. (And even when it’s over-the-counter, ALWAYS follow the directions on the label. PERIOD.)
I feel this man's pain. I have severe insomnia. Some times I won't sleep for 6-13 days. One time, I began to hallucinate and was hospitalized (against my will) for a week. My worst fear is that I'll lose the ability to fall asleep. I can't imagine the hopelessness this man felt. May he finally rest in peace 🙏

The fact that he could have been helped, but lacked the funds to receive the care is absolutely infuriating. Very rare cases like this should be treated for free. Medicine should be about saving people, not profit.
@@IMAGE_NT_HEADERS It is treatable, but not curable. Also this condition has only had a few documented patients so every time someone does actually get treated it usually helps researching a cure by a great amount.

Apparently when you are falling asleep, your brain starts to shut down the same way as if you were dying. In these instances, the brain will send a signal to the body to make sure its not shutting down completely. Hence why we sometimes jolt ourselves awake just as we start to doze off. Or get that sensation of falling. It's crazy to think, but you may be right there.
@@humanlybeast8530 sorry, I mean as the brain is preparing for sleep, everything slows down the same way as if you are dying. Like, your heart rate drops, and breathing slows. Sometimes when we are over exhausted our body does this quickly, the same way your body does when preparing for death. The brain then sends a signal to the body resulting in a hypnic jerk. Or at least thats one theory I've read.
Sad?Yes. Horrifying? No. Because when you can't sleep, when you start to suffer so much from it...maybe death is the only way for someone to get truly away from it. Not the best choice, never the best choice, but sometimes the _only_ choice.

There's a person in this comment section legitimately trying to convince people that he should have drank some coconut water and it would help him sleep. I don't think they understand that this isn't just a regular "aw man, I feel tired, but I can't sleep :(" situation
What’s sad is that After a Long time he finally was able to “Sleep” I really do wonder what was going through his head in his last seconds when he realized he was finally Able to Doze off.
Nothing could've been done anyway, unfortunately. There is still no known cure for fatal insomnia. It would probably take decades of research to come up with a solution. But hopefully his body has been able to help doctors and scientists get a better understanding of this terrifying disease.
It’s unfortunate. Not a lot of people realize just how small the Internet was in 2016. Good luck reaching any gofundme goal in 2016, nobody cared. Now all you have to do is just make a tweet about it and thousands of good people want to help
having a sleepless night sucks so bad, everyone knows that. imagine laying in bed, 24 hours a day, without catching some sleep. Time must've felt like it stopped. poor guy
This poor man couldn't afford to go to a doctor so he took an antibiotic that he shouldnt have been given. The saddest thing is if he had health care, this couldve been mediated a lot earlier. My heart is broken for this man and his family and anyone else who died because they couldnt afford treatment.
Negic Nikola No I am not slow. If you could read, you’d understand that I meant he took an antibiotic FOR A UTI, but it wasn’t given to him by a doctor, it was given to him by his boss because he could not AFFORD TO GO to the doctor. Are you slow? Please practice reading comprehension.
Although like Scare says, this is still prescribed quite easily, so who knows, even if he had gone to a doctor himself he might have ended up taking that. At first I thought that it caused a bad effect to him cause of some other conditions and that if he had gone to a doctor it would have never happened, but after hearing that, he might have been prescribed the very same thing regardless. But this is a good example of why people should never taken antibiotics not prescribed by the doctor for the current condition, even if someone was given some for an illness and then the same illness comes back and they still have some, they should always go back, because it might actually be a slightly different form of that illness and requires a different meds. It's indeed sad he couldn't even afford to get to the doctor for a UTI, and even sadder people didn't pick up on his case and managed to donate enough.
I went to the doctor for a UTI two years ago and he tried to give me Cipro. A few months before a friend told me about Cipro and it's family of antibiotics and how they cause central nervous system damage in people. Told him to give me a different family of antibiotic medicine. I have a delicate nervous system so Cipro probably would have damaged it. How fortunate I was to learn about this!
ScareTheater said that doctors last resort should be that specific medicine. but they are prescribed too easily. implying that doctors also just give it out freely, thats probably how his boss got it in the first place. no matter what even your doctor could be wrong, it doesn't hurt to search the side effects and the medicine and whats going on
I completely agree with zinch, even if your doctor prescribed it you need to check out the little paper that says side effects, as well as if you start feeling something uncomfortable or different around the time you start a new medication then you should tell the doctor, look up info on the med or stop taking it. I honestly feel for the people and don't know what I'd do if I were in that situation so I'm not discounting them or what happened to them
As an insomnia sufferer, I can truly attest to it being pure torture as the narrator described. It is debilitating. My body hurts constantly from lack of sleep and my once brilliant mind has been reduced to what I call quicksand. Anyone who also suffers from severe insomnia knows what I'm talking about. Thank you for the excellent video. I hope more research will be done in the future for people who suffer. PS... I too was prescribed Cipro many tunes in my life for UTIs and I do have peripheral neuropathy despite being only 123 pounds. Blessings to all who suffer from this dreadful condition.
"Hey boss, I need to see a doctor but don't have insurance. Can you help me out?" "Well I can give you health insurance, but I'd rather not. Here's something I have laying around. Good luck!"
American healthcare is stupid enough to cause this situation. Now you have a dead man and a man who feels like a murderer for providing a medicine he thought would help.
Where I come from, you are automatically insured when you are employed or registered at the job centre. It's so sad that it's not like this everywhere.
And here I am, pulling all nighters almost every night while this man is willing to sacrifice his two legs for 3 whole hours of sleep. I really need to appreciate things more.
As a person who's having troubles in getting proper sleep, this condition brought me anxiety It's been years, no matter how tired i am, i cant bring myself to sleep for full 8 hours, always 4-6hrs
I had insomnia for 3-4 days while withdrawing from benzodiazepines. It was an experience that shattered any sense of well-being and indeed my own sanity. I can’t imagine such a prolonged state. RIP
I get bouts of insomnia due to anxiety, but I always end up getting sleep eventually, even if it's after a few days. The idea of never being able to get the relief of sleep at the end is terrifying.
That jolt he experiences while trying to fall asleep looks like a hypnagogic jerk, or myoclonus jerk which can happen during periods of extreme stress and sleep deprivation. So in a way, his insomnia exacerbated and triggered the hypnic jerk which in turn continued to exacerbate his sleep deprivation. Basically a terrible feedback loop. Just awful stuff.
Yeah, whenever im extremely stressed i got this lol. But instead of jolt on my back it's my head that will got extreme ringing sound. Its painful and infuriating. The absolute worst
this actually happens when you fall asleep "too fast." your body basically thinks you're dying because your heart rate is lowering too quickly for comfort so it sends you a rush of adrenaline.

I recently found out about entire communities of people online who have been floxed by fluoroquinolones like cipro and it's absolutely heartbreaking. This video and someone I'm talking to on Reddit potentially saved me from getting floxed, myself, as the doctor I'm going to prescribed me cipro ear drops for a minor ear infection. ScareTheater, if you want to, I think it would be very beneficial to these people who have had their lives ruined if you follow up on this video by interviewing some people who have been floxed. I hope I don't sound pushy or anything, and I'm honestly not even sure if this will reach you, but I've talked to the people who have been affected by stuff like this, and I'm incredibly passionate about helping them in any way that I can. Right now I think the best thing to do is get the word out about how harmful these drugs can be. Thank you for making this video, as if I had not seen it and learned about the dangers of fluoroquinolones, I could have potentially had my life ruined.

You are not the only one .... he knew exactly what he was saying. When ever something is done that is under handed or evil and brought to light the term conspiracy theory is attached to it so it becomes a case of a crazy person making an accusation. So yes the term conspiracy theory becomes a conspiracy itself because that is how they want people to see it. So that the subject at hand goes away and any thought or any opinion is pushed aside with a simple shrug of shoulder. It is what’s happening with this covid 19

Yeah. It’s pretty sad. People will donate to a goal of 4 grand so some kid can get a gaming pc but won’t donate to someone who is literally dying and can’t do anything about it.
Another disturbing fact: an honest, working man cannot afford to see a proper doctor and is therefore in need to be "prescribed" medicine by his boss. Excuse me, what? Where I live, even a homeless person would be able to get the treatment they need for this kind of relatively banal infection.

This is terrifying, but I wonder: Is it possible to knock-out someone with this condition? What would they experience if that happened? I don't recommend trying it, but I am curious. May this man rest in piece.
He said early on when he was asleep from drugs prescribed by his doctor he had horrible nightmares, so I feel like no matter what way he was knocked out, unless it was able to both cancel dreams and was strong enough keep him knocked out, he'd be having a terrifying experience as long as he was asleep. Doesn't seem way too much better tbh.
Being unconscious does nothing in terms of restoring energy that actual, proper sleep does. Sleep is a cycle, most importantly including REM, which is where most of your energy refreshment comes from. There is no such cycle when one is just unconscious (including the use of anesthesia and "sleeping pills"), so it's effectively just skipping a bit of time with no benefit

I’m experiencing peripheral neuropathy. I can tell you that it isn’t something you’d even wish on your worst enemy. It’s extremely painful and debilitating, and the “burning” felt in the spine is unbearable and will quite literally make you freeze in your tracks if you’re upright and walking. You’ll be frightened to move and even to breathe. This can last anywhere from a minute to over an hour or even longer. I cannot even get out of a chair without assistance of some sort. My heart goes out to this brave man-if you haven’t been through this, trust me, you don’t ever want to. I hope his family and his son are coping with their loss. Although his is an extreme case, and he persevered as long as he could, I’m troubled to know that this could possibly happen to me since my peripheral neuropathy is ongoing.
@sam 7 Right...all the bears, and bees, and dolphins out there sure are narcissistic and arrogant.

It reminds me of the final stages of Dementia -
Where the mind was previously sub-lucid, it suddenly goes into a hyper-lucid state - thus, unlike alzheimers, the victim doesn't even gain the benefit of ignorance.

What if he thought he was finally falling asleep when he was dying... that's horrifying and sad
That's horrible to think about...holy shit.
@@kimcumberful the brain never stops functioning for one's 'whole life' neither does it shut down like it would for a dying person

Zinch Most medication is too easily given away because of big pharma
ESPECIALLY Antibiotics. There is a big reason Antibiotics are a controlled substance
I completely agree with zinch, even if your doctor prescribed it you need to check out the little paper that says side effects, as well as if you start feeling something uncomfortable or different around the time you start a new medication then you should tell the doctor, look up info on the med or stop taking it. Being unconscious does nothing in terms of restoring energy that actual, proper sleep does. The thing that scares me so much about this disease is not just what happens to you. It's that you know _exactly_ what's _going_ to happen to you. I can't _imagine_ what it must feel like to have a doctor sit you down and tell you that this is your fate...
@@TrackpadProductions I’d absolutely kill myself. I wouldn’t be able to cope I can’t I can’t imagine
The thing that makes me really sad that this guy is a fellow Indonesian, and I never heard this even from local news or else until today.
God bless him, rest in peace.
omg yes!! this really breaks my heart.
It’s more sad because his ethnicity is the same as yours...? Wtf ?
@@Cybeldina no, it's sadder because we, as Indonesian eventhough we have different ethnicity, didn't know about him..
It's like when we have a family member that are sick and need help but we don't know because no one tell us and we only know after he's gone..
@@Cybeldina we Indonesians hv this "weird" way to relate w people w the same "nationality" or maybe in some cases w people who even only hv 1% of "Indonesian" blood or smth. Even for me, I share the same ethnicity with this man, hes Bataknese and so do I. For us Bataks, I can say that we share a pretty strong bond to each other, even though we're literally fro a different family, so like this example, he had that symptoms and of course its not a good thing, I feel even worse knowing that hes Bataknese, like me. That kind of feeling is not smth all the ppl in this world can understand, I must admit
Indonesian news is always about corruption
Omg... im sorry for anyone who goes through this.. i could not imagine what its like to have this condition. Its really sad to watch this guys journey/experience going through it.. Thank you for sharing your story, and i really hope with your video and others suffering, can speed up the process of creating a cure for this. God Bless all of you
