MY Echo dashboard lights went out last week and I found you on UA-cam !!!! What a blessing !!! I changed it myself tonight and total cost?? CAD $21.27 !!!! If I had brought the Echol to a mechanic, it probably would cost me at least $100 or even more !!! So, thank you very much !!!
Thanks for the video. I was able to change the bulbs in my 2002 Echo in just a few minutes. Cost about $6, took 15 minutes, wiped away the dust and dirt as I went.
LOL. This is awesome.... Just a geek pulling apart all the panels on his little toyota. No editing, just pure, raw, ineptitude at it's finest. I thought the first minute was the start of an intervention. Yikes!
Still have my (ToyEchoStick) "Whip'poorwill" alive and running...so love this car! 17yrs March 2022. Her dome light just died so I'll be doing that. Thank you 😊 💡
Wanted to thank you for taking the time to help others. Your info was very helpful to me. Both of my bulbs are not working, I hope its just the bulbs so I guess I will find out soon now that I now how to get it apart. Thanks again bro.
Thanks for the info! I'm pretty sure one gauge light is burned out and the other has gotten pretty dim. I'll try replacing them now! Btw, my echo is a 2001 and has 388,000+ miles on it. I love it!!! Thanks again for the video.
Thank you! I've been living with a dead bulb in my instrument cluster forever! I'm driving a 2002 Echo with 230K miles. Next to work on: 1) Repair drivers seat pan ... somehow 2) Repair A/C Relay
Thank you for this video. Took my car into Jim Pattison Toyota in Vancouver today to get one of the dashboard lights changed as it was burnt out. They phone me a while later and say they 'cannot replace the dashbulbs due to accessing the unit and I'll need to pay $500 to replace the whole dash tach/speed unit'... Since I *have* had these bulbs changed in the past, I immediately smell a fresh load of bullshit and do some replacement research online (as well as watching this video) as well as phone another dealer for second opinion. I get my car back, get home and manage to take the dashboard apart myself in 5 mins and access the bulbs. Still need to find a source for the bulbs (probably the other dealer I called) but the fact I managed to switch around the bulbs (so the unit is fine, just burnt out bulbs), I saved myself $500 and tomorrow I get to phone their manager and ask where their technician buys their $500 bullshit.
typical dumbass dealers always trying to rip people off, i always try to change stuff myself and looking up stuff on youtube like this video it helps a lot

thanks for the video, it helped me to change the bulbs from the dashboard, cheers from guatemala.
You got that right! Mine is a four speaker as well, but sits a pair of 6*9 speakers pretty snugly on the back dash. The only hiccup was that there were no mounting holes back there for 6*9 speakers so I had to get a bit handy with the drill :O. If you ever decide to run wires down either floor sides or have to remove the A,B or C pillar upholstery. they're all snap in but very rigid and time consuming for neatness. But for a budget vehicle, its nice to know I can do stuff myself and have results
thank you, enjoyed the video i wanted to find out how to replace the dashboard lights and thanks to your video now i know more stuff on which stuff are removable on my echo haha
Nice Video. we didn't see how to pop the dash speaker covers to reveal the 4" ers hidden there, but i'd say everything important was covered. Good job.
Yes, there are separate bulbs for all of those features. I wouldn't think they'd be used enough to be burnt out like the ones that just illuminate the gauges, though. Looking @4:00, you can see other dark circles-- those are also lights, which take the same little bulb. Which are which I don't know, and some are empty depending on how the car is equipped (mine lacks ABS, for example).
Oh yeah! That would be good, too. Mine actually didn't have the optional six-speaker system, so only the doors and parcel shelf (back window) have speakers. In such a small car it's not a bad little system from the factory. I've definitely come across worse.
Thanks for posting this! I have a 2001 Echo (bought it new, has 160k miles, still going strong, and I LOVE it!! :) ... (subscribed to ya as well! Cheers, Francisca aka auntifranny
Toyota Echos are simple cars that get you to where you want to go and back. People laughed when I bought my 2001 Echo. But now they kind of wander how much it could have saved them in gas money.... I have a Scan Gauge one in my Echo. I hey 45-50 in the summer and 38-44 in the cold winter of Wisconsin.
Fun fact: the Echo does not come with a cabin air filter installed for whatever reason. Apparently that's how the kept the price down. I made the same discovery when mine had about 60k on it.
Just around the gauges themselves, otherwise stock. The Echo had two interior options for colors. The bottom half was always the same, but the upper part could be either a lighter or darker shade, as though there was a difference.* Later ('03+) they gained the beige and chrome accents here and there. There was "shadow gray" and "warm gray." You can look up the brochures on Google, but I can't guarantee the sites will still work. More and more are disappearing.
I've never thought of it personally, no. The old gauges looked less cartoony than the later tach gauges did, IMO. Also not much want for a tach. I can pretty much tell where my engine is in RPM's already, so it's never been a concern. Only for econo driving would a tach be handy for me-- keep my revs low. Some people have found bezels, and other have custom gauges. Might try an online search.
Thanks for the video, Harvey! Just replaced my console lights, license plate light and high mount brake light. Trying to replace/fix my trunk light, as it doesn't want to come on. Any ideas? Its a 2000 Echo base model.
Sorry it took so long to reply. My computer cut out in the middle and I had to track down where this was posted. I'd check the fuse for the radio/cigarette lighter. Oddly enough I had this problem while fiddling around once, and they seemed to work off the same fuse. If not, it could be the switch, or the bulb just doesn't want to cooperate. My last bulb in there needed an occasional wiggle to work. Swap out the bulbs from the trunk and license plate lamp and see if it's just a bulb being a pain.
Great video, love that you've already taken out the screws to make it all faster to watch! You might be able to help me, actually - have you ever gone further into the dash? My fiance had someone put an apple core down the air ventilation (ugh, it was a hens night) and I'd love to be able to clean it out...
Great video! I am trying to get my dash board lights to work (some have stopped working though others seem to be fine). At 4:00 you show two bulbs. Are those the only ones that illuminate the whole dash light set? Or are there separate bulbs that can be replaced for say - trunk open, door ajar, cold engine etc.?
Hi there. thanks for such a great video. I used it to clean the inside of my cluster gauge on the echo I just bought. I have been thinking, have you every tried of those HUD kits on ebay? or maybe tried to replace this cluster with one from the 2005 echo (with the tach) ? just wondering what can be done to spice it up a bit besides just changing out bulbs...
great video, will definitely be useful in the future! this may seem like a silly question but i recently purchased a used 2000 Echo. To the left of the steering wheel, beside the little place that holds coins, the nob is missing, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what this little nob was for!
New Zealand, actually, but nice guess. The vent in question is middle left, and yeah its too far down to grab, though an easy grabber might work (though the actual dropping of fruit was a very long time ago now, I'd rather take the whole thing out and clean it...) Pushing something through might work, yeah..
I'd say that's quite a pickle, but not the same food. I'd say once you get the HVAC panel off, notice the vent nozzles go with it. I'll see if there's a way to reach in (there are little flexible grabbers for plumbing*) or even try to push something through to the cabin filter area. Which vent was it, and how far? If it's in reach, Google "GrabEasy Grabber and Retriever" and see where they might sell one for you. I'm assuming UK with the term "hens night."
Good video , trying to do two things with mine. Disable the Daytime running lights so i dont burn out my nice bulbs I have. ( do you know how to do that)? Also are the bulbs for the heater controls and centerdash right under that cover? one of mine is burnt out or needs to be replaced..... THanks
It's funny you should ask about the lights behind the HVAC controls. The bulb within the right side has been an odd intermittent nuisance for years, but never bothered me. Last night, however, the left bulb went out, so it seems this will be my next adventure into replacement videos.
The DRL could be two things. One possibility, look at the fuse box under the hood next to the battery. The second thing (according to Canadian's in which the DRL's are a standard feature for safety) is keeping the hand-brake applied by just a couple of clicks, as that determines whether they're on or not. There is a plug under my center console which I'm assuming would have been for that switch (had it been equipped) or for the buttons/switches some Echo's had in the console for locks or aux-jacks (seem 'em here and there). It might be as easy as taking off the center console and unplugging, or pulling the fuse. Personally, I still drive with my lights on cost be damned, since it's more assurance to be seen better. If you've ever driven into the sun and barely seen an on-coming car in the shadows, that's why-- I wanna be seen if I'm that car in the dark, because those situations are often in twisty mountain roads where people cut corners, or flat, straight country roads with passing lanes. That's exactly why the Canadian's have those systems: the higher latitudes keep the sun at a lower point on the horizon (or darker more of the time), so visibility is crucial.
Yeh im in canada its a canadian car so i just want to have the drls disabled. its annoying to have lights on during bright day. The bulbs behind the HVAC are actually quite easy but for some dumb reason the replacement bulbs toyota sells dont fit the rubber green gromet to cover to make it green behind the dash so now its some odd ball color that matches nothing:(
DubskyT I did get the bulbs out (will still make a video), but the rubber is something else entirely. Some places might sell the little "capsules" as I call them, but they won't always understand. I had the same problem trying to explain I wanted the caps for my gauges, but nobody at parts stores or even Toyota knew what I was talking about. If you still have the originals, I'd see about asking Toyota why they gave you clear (assuming) bulbs rather than the green. After all, you're buying an OE product and are not getting an OE part.
Nice video. Anybody know how to remove the top of an automatic gear shift (the part that you grip with your hand)? I am trying to change the gear shifter light bulb, but I can't remove the top of the shifter. There has to be a trick to it. There's no visible screws, and it seems like it was put on with super-glue.
You actually don't need to remove it. Take out the screw in the rear cupholder, lift out the center console, and it's accessible from there, handle all in place. Thank goodness my sister in-law has an automatic sedan so I can answer that one.
If it were a fuse, the lights behind the HVAC would also go dim, I believe. I know my left bulb seems to come on after a little while at night. There's a weird connection, and cold weather in particular makes it worse.
Harvey Duncan they were the 2 bulbs for the instrument panel hey ready for this? the manual trans fluid vid where you took all that stuff apart in the hood?, , they have a pump where you fill it from underneath in the drain plug, i had my mechanic do it , i couldnt believe how easy
***** You can get them at any parts store, but they won't be the bluish green color, but the dealer charges a ridiculous amount of money for the bulbs and the plastic tubes they go into. Really depends on if you care about looking stock or not. I wouldn't be surprised for the tranny fluid, but that's only good for if you have the tools and know-how ;) I was told there's a filler on the front rather than the top, as well, but again, I think it's just easier for me to do it my way since it's right there, rather than a weird angle in a tighter space. To each their own-- as long as the job gets done.
I'd love to do that to once I have the funds. On another note, what the hell? A Mayballene commercial? My demographic is 84% male (as of now) since 2007. The last month is 86.9% male. Silly UA-cam ads:p
If you take the gauges out, you can see the clips for the clear plastic. It's fairly simple. It's not sealed like a headlight housing or even as tight as a tail light cover.
Simplicity goes a long way sometimes... sometimes. If you ever watch my in-car driving road runs, you can get a jist for how well the interior holds up rattle wise after however many miles are in the video. It's generally not too bad for a decade+ old, $10,000-new subcompact, though.
Jiwon Woo Fairly well from what I've seen online. There are far worse out there, that came out even later. If it's not for you, that's fine-- the video doesn't apply. Otherwise, why come to the video if that's all you want to contribute?
+Jiwon Woo its actually a very well made car, they stop making it for a reason. Sorry you missed and if you drive like manic I suggest you get a plane.

scan gauge 11....about the same price as the other HUD's ...but double the value, especially with mpg ,TPS, water temperature increments etc.
everything just pops out. wonder how the echo is still very reliable
