Making Outfeed/ Infeed Support Rollers

    I needed something for supporting long stock on my machines.
    I seriously considered just buying some cheapo roller stands but that would be boring. Also I wanted the roller stands to be able to tilt sideways because of my uneven shopfloor. So I decided to make them myself and make them an accessory for my existing sawhorses. They would clamp onto the top beam of the sawhorses using bar clamps. This way the side tilting funktionality wuould be included, so to speak. I made the roller out of a piece of sturdy PVC pipe and the frame from some cheap spruce plywood. This is a very simple project that anyone with the bare minimum of tools can make.

    Great little project, well presented, I love your sense of humour. If viewers are worried about the lack of bearings (over the top really, as the amount of turning the rollers do will not cause significant wear....assuming amature use), a solution would be to simply fit greased metal sleeves into the end of the rollers for the pins to rotate in. Simples. Carry on the great work Cosmos.

    Like your design, going to make some modifications. Instead of making a circle out of plywood, I will purchase some end caps, glue them onto the PVC and drill a hole in the center and attached some screws and nuts, and locktite them on so they don't come loose. Of course, I will work on the endcaps before glue them on. Also, this will prevent the boards from sliding off when you push them onto the PVC roller.

    I'm confused, if you put epoxy on both places where the steel shaft goes, how does it spin freely?

    • @romsthe

      It's special rotation epoxy, it only sticks for translations. Modern science can do anything !

    Klejąc pierwsze trzy kawałki sklejki można środkowy już od razu przyciąć krótszy. Nie będzie potrzebne potem wycinanie czy frezowanie wcięcia. I jeśli rolka podporowa miała by być użyta jedynie do prefabykatów szerokości rolki to można by element w jakim jest mocowana obrotowo wyprowadzić o kilka centymetrów powyżej krawędzi rolki. Lub w tym elemencie nawiercić po dwa otwory. Górne zapewniałyby możliwość używania rolki do prefabrykatów od niej szerszych. Dwa niższe pozwalały by na użycie prefabrykatów jedynie do szerokości rolki. Ogólnie proste i użyteczne.

      Kombinationswinkel. Und ja, der ist wirklich praktisch.
      Ich habe einen etwas günstigeren (der von Starett kostet doch ein bisschen was), und der ist bei jeder Einstellung des Stahllineals sehr gut winklig (nicht perfekt, aber für Holz absolut ausreichend).
      Allerdings sind alle günstigen Winkel mit mm/Inch-Skala, nur die Starett-Winkel gibt es mit mm/mm Skala.

    I am just wondering since you glue both roller and steel shaft on the other side of stand, then how can it keep spinning? (when you knock the steel shaft into through the hole to connect to the roller, won't that epoxy stick both roller and stand?) Thanks for sharing!

    • @CosmasBauer
      @CosmasBauer  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, while the epoxy was hardening I spun the drum a couple of times after a couple of minutes. This way it couldn't stick.

  • @knowmater

    What brand is that jointer you are using?

  • @johnbrewer7221
    @johnbrewer7221 4 роки тому

    Question: You put epoxy in the axle hole on the roller then on the part of the axle that mates to the hole in the axle. You then drive the axle with the epoxy on it through the axle support and into the roller. It seems like the axle would then bond to both the support and the roller and refuse to turn. Can you explain what actually happened here?

    • @CosmasBauer
      @CosmasBauer  4 роки тому

      I spun the drum a couple of times while the epoxy was setting. This is why it could not stick.

    It's fine for the planer but can be really dangerous on the table saw. A slight angle can force the piece you are cutting away from the fence into the blade and you can get nasty kickback. Be aware of it and get your hands on ball type rollers if you can. Otherwise nice build, simple and efficient.

    • @andyboybennett
      @andyboybennett 5 років тому +1

      Just make sure that the outfeed roller is level, and slightly below the plane of the table.

    • @davetarrant6888
      @davetarrant6888 4 роки тому

      roms I was thinking and have experienced my roller stand forcing a board in a sideways direction like you mentioned. I think an easy solution to solve that might be to make the roller stationary and just let the board go across the top by friction. What do you think?
