In my opinion, this construction is one of the best workbench-add-ons, I've ever seen. One has to ask, why there are still other constructions on the market. I will buy your plans and built this!
Hi Neil, i bought your plans for the workbench build mainly for the quick release vice. just completed my build and i have to say it was worth every cent. the plans are clear concise and having watched your video as well it was a fun project. the main thing i had to change was to find a new pin placement for the pin that the quick release unlocks against as i did not have rare earth magnets. the magnets i had were a bit weaker so once i had the pin placement a little shallower it worked like a dream. Thanks very much for all your inspiring ideas. Regards, Patrick in South Africa.
You actually do a follow-up based on comments on UA-cam. You adjust your plans for the same reason. Maaaan, that is incredible. Never saw anyone on YT doin that. Pacman was great, i laughed hard. Also puppies are cute!
The steel version got a like... the no-weld version got a sub. So very cool and much more attainable for the average DIYer! I will build this once I have a table to attach it to.
Your explanations and plans are so good that even a beginer woodwoker like me managed to make the mechanism work. That's make me very happy. Thank you very much! You are an inspiration to people like me. I just saw that I bought your plans for the second time, but I think it's worth it.
Great video, I bought the plans and I'm in the process of making a pair of mechanisms to convert my existing shop made twin screw vice. I'm using 3/4" threaded rod as that's what the existing vice was made with. When I assembled them the nut released as it is designed to do but wouldn't re-engage. After a little head scratching I added a second magnet on top of the first, that fixed it and works great! Suggest you add a note to the plans that if the nut doesn't re-engage try a bigger magnet. My first magnet had 9 lb of strength not much less than the one you used which I believe is 9.5 lb.
I just found the vid with the steel version of the mechanism and sat down to design a wooden version when this popped up! Well done sir. Great concept, elegant design and thorough explanation - and saved me hours of head-scratching. Worth buying the plans just for that alone!

Dear Sir, with every time more admiration I follow your channel. Your explanations are great, nothing to much, just fantastic hand labor. Our compliments from Holland!
Sorry I could only give one 👍on top. This is great. I drew up a push button half nut vise but haven't built it yet because I knew I'd stumble across a simpler one handed vise mechanism and you done the stumbling for me. That one pup reminded me of my late Jack Russell that died at 17 years old. Until he got to old to carry anything he always had something in his mouth hoping to find anyone who would play fetch with. His teeth were worn flat from finding rocks that he wouldn't abandon. I made him a fancy pine casket and all the nearby kids showed up to help dig his grave.
Saw the original, thought: "ill give the welds a go, not structural, I should be able to get it done." Then you bring this masterpiece to us and I will postpone attempting to weld, yet again. 👌🏻
I don't know if this was an original idea or something you came across and made. But it is the simplest and coolest most useful idea I've seen in a long long time. Thank you!
Greetings from Cali USA. Always amazed at your skill set, ingenuity and creative abilities. Thanks for sharing and making so many of your designs available on plans for me to make them myself.
Just re-visited the bench and vice series as I’m finally building my shed and need a decent work bench and I really like your set up.. Great video’s I’ve been following your channel since the roll out drawers in the back of the Ute I think and you’re just getting better and better.
Thanks for a wooden version! Ive seen a lot of quick release vices on youtube while getting ideas to create my own but yours is by far the best! Bought the plans, will be making this soon!
Great video! Thanks for rethinking the design for those without a welding rig and then remaking the device and sharing it in a video. I’ll definitely be buying the plans!
Very nicely done! Now I need a woodworking table on which to mount the vice, and an enclosed space other than my open driveway in which to put the table on which to mount the vise, and a house big enough in which to put the space in which to put the table on which to mount the vice, and the money to buy the house in which to put the space in which to put the table on which to mount the vice -- man, these things are always more complicated than they seem!
Learning to weld is a good thing. I'm in the process of doing that right now. It's a skill that will become a valuable asset in one's fabricating toolset, expanding the options immensely. Nonetheless, this was a very helpful video, proving once again that there is more than one solution to any problem. As always, thanks much for sharing. Steve

thanks again for this. I used your filling down the spanner bit trick which was a great tip!!!!! I always seem to have drills that make the hole or holes too bit but, filling it down works great.
I've been following your channel for a long time. Very good projects and I just bought your Quick Release Vice Mechanism. I've looked at several quick release mechanism by other you tubers and I have come to a conclusion your plywood version is simple and probably easiest to build. I will be ordering your plans soon as I can get out of the house (corona virus ) to buy some supplies. I would love to b of better support but I have to join with the low ball as I'm on a limited income. Sorry but 12$ a year is best I can do right now. I Wii join soon as I get help from my son. That’s ingenious! Great job. I like all of your makes. Here I was thinking I had to get a spot welder, now I don’t have to. Great job. Thanks much for all that you do.
Since you have the half nut might as well use both halves and make the shuttle wider to match. You could also do the whole thing out of hardwood ; screw & all. Waxed threads and a blunted acme style thread.
Another great project Pask! Puts the vice within my reach as I can't weld. And I really look forward to seeing the Jack Russell's again.. Lost mine recently.
Congrats on 100k & the new website (it's awesome!) Getting to this point is well deserved, but the first big step on what will be an awesome journey - keep it up! the new version of the vice is awesome, thanks so much for making the plans for it - I purchased right away, and can't wait to make your vice as the core of my first workbench!
