I absolutely LOVE this song!! I can still remember driving to my high school at age 16 listening to this song with my car stereo cranked up! Hall & Oates was my morning caffeine!! “PRIVATE EYES” is still one of my favorite songs. ❤
Like you I ❤this song 🥰 You have to be 17yo in the UK to buy and drive a car (and for many 17yo students, cars are just far out of financial reach especially due to insurance costs). You can buy and drive a tiny 50cc scooter/motorbike (like a Honda Civic) at 16yo but let's face it, you're not going to impress your girlfriend/boyfriend with that, are you!
@joannecunliffe8067 I know that's true! In the late 90's and then again in early 2000s I spent time in the UK for schooling and when I returned to visit friends in the East End (Canning Town); although they had cars we did EVERYTHING by the tube to economise!
Everything they do is so great!! The BEST duo along with the PSB as far as I'm concerned! "Say It Isn't So" and "Out of Touch" are my favorite. This song is also one of their best too!
Amber & Jay, here are some other great Hall & Oates songs to react to: "Maneater", "Adult Education", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", "Family Man", "Looking for a Good Sign", Do What You Want, Be What You Are", "Bigger Than Both of Us", "Head Above Water", and "Go Solo".
Yessss those are some awesome ones to react to! I'd also love to see them react to "Missed Opportunity", which is one no one ever talks about. It's one of my faves H & O songs!
The did react to both, but the Paul Young version of the first song. I was excited to hear Rob Squad do a day of covers recently, 🤩so I hope they do that again. "Every Time..." is a great one to hear by Hall and Oats and Allen Stone & Teddy Swims did a cover of Sara Smile that is outstanding.
@@canonfodder2068 But In the case of "Every Time..." Hall & Oates did not cover that song. It is their song actually as a cut on their 1980 album Voices before Paul's cover. Daryl wrote it. Don't know if that would work as a cover. Teddy's would for "Sara Smile"
This was my favorite song as a preteen kid. This and abracadabra by Steve Miller Band. Love this song and this song is what started my love of Hall and Oates. Now I know many more of their songs. The blue eyed soul of Daryl Hall is just so good. His "live at Daryl's house" series he did for UA-cam has a nice mix of genres but sound good.
I worked as a Stage Hand for years and we set up a lot of Pro Bands like Green Day, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and so many more, but the unique thing still about Hall and Oates when I set up one of their shows , was that they didn't need all of the Laser Lights,, fancy FX and Video Screens like a lot of todays Artists. They just used one Video Wall and some basic lights along with their Music Gear and that was it! They are such great musicians that they, like a lot of old school pros, just needed themselves and thier great music to have an Awesome show!
This came out at a time when you couldn't wait for the next Hall & Oates song to come out, and it didn't disappoint. They were in their prime, all over the radio, and killing it.
You guys definitely need to react to some episodes or songs from Live From Daryl's House. Daryl has a show where he invites other musicians on to play some Hall & Oates songs as well as some of their own songs. He has legends as well as young, up and coming artists. He has had Smokey Robinson, The O'Jays, CeeLo Green, Darius Rucker, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, etc. The list goes on and on. It's fantastic! If you get a chance, definitely check out the version of I Can't Go For That from the episode with CeeLo Green. It is absolutely FUNKY!!!!!
Live from Daryl's House is back!!! 77years old and still singing. Live concert 11/27/23. John Oates solo work is amazing, he has a great voice. He sings lead on Possession Obsession check it out.
Two popular Hall & Oates songs I don't believe you've reacted to yet are "Everything Your Heart Desires" and "Maneater". (Sorry if I'm wrong about that.) Being you love Daryl Hall's voice, Amber, I think you'd really enjoy "I'm in a Philly Mood", a song from his solo work. It's a beautiful homage to the lush, smooth Soul music, (called the Philly Sound), that his hometown produced in the late 60's through the 70's.
The "Private Eyes" album provided some great singles. There's the title track, of course. Then there's "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" and "Did It in a Minute." One of the singles, "Your Imagination," wasn't as big of hit as the others, but it's one of my absolute favorites from the Hall & Oates catalogue. It's a criminally underrated song, in my opinion.
I never interpreted this as a stalker song, I think Daryl as the narrator is speaking as someone already in a relationship with the lady. He's just expressing that he knows her so well she can't effectively hide anything from him, so they may as well talk it out. He's looking out for her-- "I'm a spy, but on your side, you see?"
There's a great UA-cam video of Darryl and friends singing an acoustic version of the Bill Withers classic Ain't no Sunshine. Ironically they're playing outside on a sunny day.
If you want to hear a song where Daryl & John share lead vocals, check out their cover of the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'"! Shows just how sexy smooth John's voice is!
Love Private Eyes. Ironically, this was the number 1 billboard song this week in 1981. Lip sweater? LOL. Never heard that expression for a thick mustache, but I heard of a caterpillar lying on your lip! LOL. If you want to hear more of John Oates singing voice, checkout their cover of the Righteous Brothers hit "You Lost That Lovin' Feeling". Thanks. 😎
My Mum loved Hall and Oates and used to play their music in the car when I was a kid. They toured Australia 5-10 years ago and I went with Mum. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. So entertaining and we spent most of the show on our feet.

Daryl Hall's Mom is a vocal coach who started training him on breath control at age 3.
Darryl Hall was once asked who is the best singer in today’s music. He responded “Me. I can sing anything you want “. I agree
