  • After riding my 2018 KTM 250XCW for a number of hours now, I figured it was time to give my thoughts on how I feel about the 250 vs 300 two stroke models.
At the end of the day they are both great options and perform similar in many ways. But there are a few differences which have kept me happy with my 250..
Let me know your thoughts down in the comment section!

I had a 2021 300 Husky but really never got on with it for some reason that I cannot explain and sold it for a 4 stroke, but when I rode a mates 250 EXC I just loved it. Purely subjective but for some weird reason it felt so much lighter and more agile and fun. So crazy that 50 cc can make such a "feel" difference as in reality the bikes have identical weight. If I get a 2 stroke again in the future, against all apparent logical arguments in favour of the technically superior 300, it will definitely be a 250. But then we ride bikes for fun, not logic!

I have both a 250 and 300 and they are similar and different and I love them both. The 250 is more "exciting" to ride but more work and can be more frustrating. The 300 is always down for anything and tackles almost anything with ease lol

What I have learned with the KTM two strokes IE 250 versus 300... Is you can make the characteristics of power delivery the same by tuning or changing the power valve springs... You can make the power band very linear on both bikes or very abrupt... Also there is a CDI box mapping difference on the ignition... So by putting a 250 CDI box on a 300 gives you more 250 like characteristics... I might suggest that since you have a 250... You can buy a 300 kit from KTM to transform your bike... Way cheaper possibly than buying a new bike the kit comes with a cylinder with power valves installed a CDI box gaskets and of course the piston I believe it's something under $1,000

I've owned both and I agree with what you are saying. The 250 was great for flowing trails but now that I ride technical hard enduro trails the 300 makes things a lot easier as it has so much low down torque. Awesome vids, keep em coming.

Have an 08 300 xcw(i sold an 06 250xc to buy) that i love, but my neighbor just bought a 20' 250xc and boy is there a difference in the vibration aspect, plus it feels 30 lbs lighter than my 300. Put me into thinking about trading mine for a 17' model year and up. Amazing. I loved my 250 in some places more than the 300 and vice versa. I agree with you though in the fact that the 300 is easier to ride cuz i get lazy sometimes it's so much easier, but the 250 on the pipe pinned is so much fun! Thanks for the videos, love em

Own a KTM 200, 250 and 300 and by far by favorite for single track is the 200 (it is a 125 with a 200cc cylinder), when riding on ATV trails I always like the 250 more than the 300 due to the following reasons:
    1. 250 revs quicker. 300 feels sluggish to get off and going
    2. 250 feels atleast 30% more nimble than the 300 while the 200 feels 30% more nimble than the 250
    3. Vibration on the non counterbalanced 300 is unbearable at almost any amount of time after one hour of riding. 250 is fine for 6hrs without noticing it too much
    4. I became a better rider because of the 250 and the 200 and hence I let my friends ride the 300. It is a good buddy bike

I live and ride everything in Colorado. Been on many of the tough trails here in CO. I ride a EXC-f (2017) 250 KTM (4 stroke) and all my buddies ride 2 strokes (300's, 250's). I have never had an issue going anywhere they go. So yea the 250 you may have to work slightly more work, but it really depends on how you ride and how tough trails you go on. Your bike, your skill, and your clutch do most the work regardless of which bike you are on. I have never said "no" to any trail ride no matter which other bikes are on it. Its only at the top of the mtn that I realize sometimes I am the only 4 stroke. But I am at the top with everyone else! Looks like you all had fun out here in CO!

Had a 03 300 exc, upgraded to a 09 300 xcw (still own both) was ready to get another 300 but like you said better deals on the 250. Found a new left over 2017 250 xcw this spring for a smoking deal and jumped on it. Pretty much agree with everything you said. Might prefer a 300 but for the extra $1k+ it would of cost me for a similar 300 I am cool with the 250. Of course we can always upgrade at the time we replace the top end. BTW my son rides the 09 300 now and I hit reserve at 69 miles and he hit it at 70. Don't know the tank sizes but I would say gas consumption is very similar.

I don't care that much about counterbalanced or not. Hopping on my buddies KTM 300 MXC, I only noticed the vibrations for the first couple minutes of riding. Maybe I would change my tune if I rode it all day but I rode it for an hour and had no complaints even when swapping back and forth between my 450L. I am sold on getting a 2 stroke as my next bike in a couple years.

I bought a 250 XC and later converted it to a 300 which didn't cost all that much and was pretty easy to do. The 300 really wants to be ridden differently. You want to short shift and not try to ring it out. The power is mostly down low and mid RPM. There is no need to rip it up hills because it will tractor up most anything. I live in Washington in the Cascades where the single track is steep and slimy. 300 is king here.

So i think this KTM or for that matter all of the 2 strokes that are left in the market today will be a up grade for me. I have 2 models in mind.. the KTM 250 xc-w and the Husky te 250i. So once the bikes start coming back to PA. I'll be getting one of those . Some input would be nice..

I like 250s better as long as they have a higher compression head, ports lowered a tad and a well jetted kehin carb they gain a massive amount of low end power and still get better mpg. We do a lot of 100 mile days and mpg matters. I do like 300s but having one races on 200s i really dont think the power is necessary in fact a really strong running 300 can be tiring on big days similar to a big four stroke. Its all fun though.

@@johnnykurrti5868 so I have changed pistons on countless 2 stroke engines from 85cc to 300cc and it usually takes 2 hrs or less. My first 4 stroke right now and it is a pain if one wants to do it with engine in the frame. Not much room for anything. On a 4 stroke one could get away waiting longer to change pistons because it is two rings and one oil ring vs a single ring for compression on a 2 stroke. But when one has to change valves and seats and guides the work adds up and wish someone else did the job.

I just wonder if that would change the way you viewed the bike. Being in SoCal a dual sport works for me. I was awfully tempted to get a 300 plated out of state but went with an ‘07 525 EXC. still like the thought of the 300 though.

I then switched to a 300 Sherco four stroke. As light as a 2 stroke but same power as a 300 2 stroke - what a beast, light nimble and can lug like a 2 stroke due to the engine design and the over idle setup. Ideally I would like an oil injected 300 2 stroke which i think brings the best of both worlds and after trying a couple like the KTM and Beta im sold. The only thing holding me back is the finances

nothing makes you have to feather the clutch as a mx 125cc bike. You basically have to be like ronny mac when you go up hills

IMHO if your a 2 stroke purest the 250cc is so much more fun to ride ... if your fit good rider of average weight the 250cc is so much more fun riding racing anything but pure slow tech(300 wins there).. the 250cc rider will corner better tire less ..If your overweight unfit lazier rider the 300 is for you ..fit the green power valve spring and tractor away ... just remember when you hear that 250 screaming up behind you to move out of the way..

I own a 17 300 xcw, personally I like a little more open flowing trails so I should have probably gotten an xc 250/300 or 350/450 especially since I do ride moto as well but they are a cheater bike in a sense though they really shine in tight woods and single track

Title is "what is better " so he gives a bunch of reasons why the 300 is better then says he likes the 250 better?
I have a KTM 300 and love it .I ride the heck out of it and almost never fix it. You can't ask for more than that.

Dont forget most people finance because a lightly used bike will be 8-9 grand. That lost $1000 on a brand new bike means your on one so who cares.
