This is incredible microphone and sound quality depicting the *interior* noises of the vehicle. You also did an excellent job picking up that noisy chassis vibration in the lower frequencies that microphones frequently miss. Too many people stick all their microphones near the exhaust and have the exhaust puffs cause massive sound clipping and call it "amazing sound." No, this video has amazing sound.
i think it's down to it being attached to the driver as opposed to being on a roll cage, meaning that you don't hear all the vibrations of the road etc. the current gopro's do have excellent microphones however
That window cutout over the windshield was put in order to see the traffic ahead when racing on the high banks of Daytona. I believe Bruce calls it the "Daytona Window!"
yeah, this is a car for the circuit de la sarthe, monza, nurburgring, spa (the old layout), etc. (where proper racing takes/took place) laguna seca only gets such a high level of respect because of the corkscrew, especially since it was butchered a few years back.
His gearing was no where near setup for this circuit, pedaling it around important accerleration points and hitting top end too quickly. This is why 908/3's usually do so much better. And this is Canepa, he brings a small armada of cars and crew, unless he was running the gearing this car had in it's race livery.
There is no other car that evokes emotions , goosebumps and all like this . The visor cam and sound is the best Ive seen yet, the 917 is just the most iconic racer of all time and this video is proof of that .😎
This is really wonderful. Only a shame that these cars are on such a relatively small circuit. They need a bigger, faster circuit to stretch their legs.
This car has long legs. Laguna Seca is to short for this car. It needs more space, more long straits to shine. As it did in Le Mans. You may loose some time in corners, but it will demolish the competion on the straits. However : great clip, nice sound, you can hear what this engine is capable of. A lot. When racing was analog and great. Please bring them back. They whon't pollute this planet. We do.
A beautiful study of controlled violence! That was absolutely EPIC in every way possible, and I really enjoyed the simplicity of gear box watching Bruce shift through the gears lap after lap.
Such an awesome experience watching a near-perfectly engineered racing sports car (an "Uber Rennen Maschine", if you will) the glorious, and brilliant, Porsche 917K. Pushed hard, and engaged, and so very visceral and pure, to its noble analog core. A truly fucking remarkable piece of motor engineering. Absolutely Beautiful.
Too bad they couldn't sort out the understeer. Especially turn two. Still one of the greatest sports car prototypes of all time. Thanks for posting this.
To drive this machine like this is what the designer and engineers had mind as the objective to dethrone the big American V8’s and Italian V12’s.. And as a 10 year old this car left an indelible mark on my psyche.. is there anything else that can even compare?
This type of configuration is very common on older prototypes with levers for shifting. It is a mid engined car, with the gearbox at the very back, so there is freedom as to where the shifter can be positioned. On this car there is a mechanical linkage that runs along the right side of the chassis and connects to the gearbox at the back to select the different gears.
with a central gear lever there would have to b a lot mor linkages in between the lever itself and the box (to get the mechanism to link to transaxle gearbox, as the engine would be in the way), meaning a less positive feel, Greater chance of damage (nuts and bolts to come loose, more linkages mean more linkages to wear) and a majority of the drivers are more accustomed to having the lever on the right as most countries have left hand drive. most circuits run clockwise meaning that the driver is on the inside for most of the corners so the centrifugal force makes the car more balanced when turning right as the centre of pressure remains closer to the centre of the car (thats the theory anyway, look at 1960s indianapolis cars they are off centre for that reason) a lot of endurance cars used to be right hand drive to try to get a (very small) advantage, with modern telemetry, tyres, aerodynamics, regulations regarding weight, the balance can be manipulated much better these days in a much less crude fashion.
I wonder what it must be like for the other driver's on the track, particularly Porsche drivers who are familiar with the legacy of the 917 seeing this car come up from behind and overtake them. I imagine to many it would give them goose bumps.
Not to sound like a whiner, but I don't know how people survive these races from a mental perspective. I first go-karted and I lost all enthusiasm for sports cars and my complete understanding of racing as a sport changing. First your neck is clobbered, then you feel uncomfort with the helmet on, and then your mind tunnel visions as it is focused every second on combining visual input with mental filters which then relay output to control the car. I would love to drive these cars around a city to show off, but track events are just beyond me. I feel nauseated watching this video (not even exaggerating ).
Too bad batteries seem to have killed this type of engine in supercars recently. i.e. Porsche 918. Imagine it with a modern flat 12! Such a sad age we live in. Save all the batteries for Teslas.
Matthew Schiebout - Exactly! Those days are gone, man, they're gone. I mean just have a listen to the violent eruption of raw unfiltered power as he floors her crossing the finish line right in the beginning of the video. Then look at the 919 prototype they set the new Nürburgring record with. I mean - no doubt it's quick, unreal level even, no contest - but I just don't feel it.
Racecars are all about pushing the technological envelope, that's what the latest Porche endurance racers do, I get they don't have the raw and dangerous feel of cars like this, but come on man. To pretend like modern racing is boring is ridiculous.

And what's even more surprising is that this is purely off of the basic built in microphone of a GoPro
Wow that is extremely surprising. If that's the case then this has got to be the best gopro microphone footage I've heard in a car. Excellent.
i think it's down to it being attached to the driver as opposed to being on a roll cage, meaning that you don't hear all the vibrations of the road etc. the current gopro's do have excellent microphones however
^ That's quite fascinating when you look into it, actually
Sometimes, I need to remind myself why I admire and respect Porsche with this video.
Anyone else catch themselves trying to duck under the windshield frame LOL!
That window cutout over the windshield was put in order to see the traffic ahead when racing on the high banks of Daytona. I believe Bruce calls it the "Daytona Window!"
Laguna Seca is not big enough to handle this monster.
yeah, this is a car for the circuit de la sarthe, monza, nurburgring, spa (the old layout), etc. (where proper racing takes/took place)

@@theant9821 The 917k never raced at Nurburgring because the car was too large. Porsche used their 908 instead.
@@Logan912 so the photos of 917 there in 69 and 70 are faked?
@@theant9821 The photos of the 917 aren't faked, no, but that's a different car. Also, the 917k didn't exist in 1969.
Best 917 video in the internet!
The quality of these in-cars from Laguna is just stunning. Keep 'em coming!
Craig Yirush l
0:34 that build up!
Thanks for filming and uploading this!! This is one of the best car video's on YT!
There is no other car that evokes emotions , goosebumps and all like this . The visor cam and sound is the best Ive seen yet, the 917 is just the most iconic racer of all time and this video is proof of that .😎
*spine-tingling harmonics*
And this is why the 917k and the 917 series of cars are by far favorite racing cars
Superb video - the 917K is a beast! Not entirely sure how anyone could dislike it though!
"Number 20, driven by Michael Delaney."
There will be only one !
This is really wonderful. Only a shame that these cars are on such a relatively small circuit. They need a bigger, faster circuit to stretch their legs.
i love all these visor cams this past week or so
Great to get a little closer to the 917K experience! Thanks for sharing :)

Oh my Gooooooooood! Sounds so good!
What a sound!
That Sound is FANTASTIC !!!
Wow. Thanks for sharing.
I found myself breathing to the pattern of the engine's shifting- am I crazy?
this 312PB sounds so damn good !!!!
wrong video?
No, it isn't. The leading RED car is a Ferrari 312PB. You can here it screaming over the 917 at the race start ;)
Literally incredible. 312B as well, that motor is just amazing.
god damn that was amazing!
WOW! Just wow... Speechless...
That 312p is sensational.
Stupefacente!!! A mio giudizio sembra quasi di pilotare una navicella...spaziale!!!
Respect ! Respect ! Thé most epic race car of all time ?

What a gem!
My god the noise!
Great job Bruce..!! Your 917 has some very long gears... and long rev bands
i wonder what does that little red bottom on the steering wheel do
He presses the button in order to talk to his Pit Crew
VisionWells thanks
Yilun Mao It fires the ejector seat.
Love it proud to be a RACER Magazine Subscriber got the IMSA 50th Anniversary Book
Too bad they couldn't sort out the understeer. Especially turn two.

Thanks for posting this.
Oh my..
After watching these racing videos and f1 and IndyCar races i definitely think forza did a good job on making there game somewhat realistic
917 one love
Fkn best video ever
Awesome!!
Let me Drive!
Early braking short shifting someone was being a good steward for this car but it wasn't Bruce he was in the purple #10 that led the race.
Oh my for long straight stretch 917 could show her ture power .
wow
Sure makes the straights seem short.
Too small of a racetrack for these beast...
917: so much car you need 2 windshields
To drive this machine like this is what the designer and engineers had mind as the objective to dethrone the big American V8’s and Italian V12’s.. And as a 10 year old this car left an indelible mark on my psyche.. is there anything else that can even compare?
wait the driver is sitting to the right of the centreline but the shifter is still on his right. how does that work?

Serious?
i know that this cars r priceless so well done
what are your driving credentials? just so we can weigh up the facts.

Is this the most powerful racing car in history? The 917K?
917/30 is one of the most powerful ones
The earliest bird.
Just liked, 917th!
Интересно, мне одному показалось, что видео слегка ускоренное?
Совершенно не ускоренное видео
I think he is stuck on the second gear :D
I believe it's a dogleg box so he was alternating between 3rd and 4th for most of the lap.
lol barely has to change gear
I shall marry this car and hope that it will have our baby's.
This monster belongs to LeMans not LaGoon
Whoever is driving sucks. it's the fastes car on the track

The roof structure bisecting the helmet cam's field-of-view ruins this otherwise nicely done video.
Great sound, horrible camera position .

visor cams are too bouncy
dude, really
get out
get out of what?
a gopro works better
The ride isn't smooth so I would expect a visor cam to be bouncy
