My wife and I were very fortunate to see this car at the Monterey Historics in '94, driven by Hans Stuck! When interviewed after his stint, he was asked to compare this car to other more modern cars (like the 956/962) he had driven. His answer was classic: "Well, the handling is a little bit primitive, but with the extra horsepower you can get it a little sideways in the corners and go faster!" The factory rep standing next to him turned as white as a ghost and everybody else just cracked up laughing.
Yeah, probably between 900-1100 BHP, so around race trim, definitely not qualy trim, else the engine would blow after a few laps from the excessive boost presssure.
That link is now gone. Here's some info from a Sotheby's auction in 2004 it appears to reference the race shown in this video: www.rmsothebys.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=16966 VINTAGE MOTOR CARS AT AMELIA ISLAND 13 March 2004 Lot 161 - 1972 UOP Shadow MK III Race Car Chassis no. 72-CA-2 $200,000 - $300,000 "After spending many years in storage, the Shadow was restored in 1995 and fitted with a naturally aspirated 509 cu in. big-block and won several historic races. Wanting more power, the owner had the Shadow refitted with a twin turbo engine once again. On the dyno, power output was a healthy 1,350hp, but the torque was more impressive at some 1,450 pound-feet. Over the next two years, the Shadow was very successful in historic racing, taking in the European “Supersports” series and appearing in Daytona for an HSR meeting where it was timed at 225mph on the banking and still accelerating. In the 1998 Monterey Historics, the Shadow was matched against the turbo Porsches, including the late Mark Donohue’s 917/3, which had been its nemesis in the 1972/3 season. Our Shadow was leading by over twenty seconds when it spun on dropped oil on the last lap, just failing to win."
If you were at Laguna Seca on 10/14/1973 you saw Mark Donohue win the race, and the Can-Am championship, in the 917/30. It's always cool to see that car again in exhibitions, but those cannot compare to witnessing its real master driving it.
I was there, almost. Had overheating issues with my father's 1968 Cougar while climbing the track's entrance hill. Very warm day and huge crowds. Spent half the day gathering water and left not wanting to get stuck in post race traffic.
The 917 and the Veyron were both developed by Ferdinand Pietch, Ferry Porsche's brother-in-law. The Veyron's performance numbers were targeted specifically as a tribute to the 917. You are also really right about the turbo lag. I talked to a gent who got to drive 917/30 004 (built by Penske for Donohue, but never raced) and he said that when that engine came on the boost, it was like getting rear-ended. Some day, I'd like to see a Turbo Panzer run.
Yeah, that Shadow Turbo car is a freakin rocketship! I think I read a while that it is much more powerfull than it was back in the early 70's. Back then the Shadow team had teething problems with packaging the turbos with their 8L V8, plus Penske had full Porshe/Audi factory backing and turbo know how. Check 1999 Goodwood festival of speed for a bit more footage of the Shadow turbo car.
SJgunguy24, you are 100% correct because I worked there with my best friend, Ron Gruner's nephew, in the summers of 97 and 98. All we did was wash the hauler and run errands. You can see me and Ron (younger Ron) on the top of the hauler when he's pulling in. Never did appreciate till now what a great time that was. Too young at 17. Amazing, best video I have ever seen on youtube.
Different time, different place. Good times hey, not like the electric or hybrid tech now.. So boring now, especially the engine noise. Love historic racing especially Goodwood UK . I'm only 45 mile from there .See you there ?
@seroyer2 Let us also not forget that 1100 was race spec, in the qualifying spec it had upwards of 1500hp on tap. And at 820kg or 1800lbs that is just awesome amount of power.
@ZXLNT Yeah, that was the UOP Shadow Team. They had a twin turbo in the works toward the end of the series, but the mighty 917 ended it all.Would like to see a series like that again.Saw all the Can-Ams at Laguna Seca from '72 to the end.
That is a the Turbo Shadow that Car is in Bruce Canepa museum in Scott's Valley about 45 mins from laguna seca.. That is Jerry Woods in the Red hat I'm hoping to be working at Jerrry woods ENT. int the near future.
@seroyer2 Bad guess! Properly designed and applied turbos can be made to have ZERO lag. The 917/30 (with 5.3 liters) instantly accelerated out of corners faster than the (9.3 liter) naturally aspirated bib block Chevy-powered McLarens...with NO turbo lag.
V12 5400 cc . 1.100/ 1.200 cv in gara , 1,350 / 1.400 cv in qualify ( max 1580 cv ca). 0-100 1,9 sec 0-320 10,9 sec ( 1580 cv ). Great great great great great great car , great great great great video !!!!!!!!!!!Thank mlmgm , forever porsche 917/30 and Mark Donhoue and Roger Penske( TURBO PANZER)!Thank !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Goodnight mlmgm.
The mighty 917/30 and the even mightier Shadow Mk-III Twin Turbo (black car #102)! The Shadow didnt win any races back in the days because of reliability problems, but it is faster than the 917/30. The Porsche weights about 1800 lbs, has 1100 HP & 810 lbs-ft of torque in race trim. The Shadow weights slightly less at 1730 lbs, and has more power at 1350 HP & 1450 lbs-ft of torque in race trim. Its powerded by a huge 509 C.I. Twin Turbo Chevrolet Big Block V8.
I can respect the Shadow but it was very unreliable, and if we’re going high hp, then 1,580 to 1,600 in the 917/30 would smoke a Shadow, but probably need need tires and fuel every 2 laps.
I love how everyone is babying thess priceless cars and here comes the sunoco 917 driver powersliding it at the end of the turn. I cant imagine taking the corkscrew in these cars
@bentleyv8t That's a Shadow MKIII twin turbo... it never raced, always had mechanical issues. Jackie Oliver drove a normally aspirated one, again, it was fast but always broke.
In regards to turbo lag-- I was at Laguna in 1972 ish when Follmer won the race in the 917/10. It appeared he had major turbo lag coming out of turn 9 onto the front straight. Everybody could out accelerate him for the first 1000 feet, then he would just squish them flat with the power after that. Probably didn't help him that the rear sway bar was ready to fall of the back. The Porsches also ran spools in the "diff" which doesn't help handling in the slow stuff either.
They truly don't make racecars like this anymore, the 917/30 is incredible, all more power than the new Chiron and a power to weight ratio of 1,967 hp per ton.
When was this video shot? That looks like the pre-historic weekend before the Monterey historics 1998. Olaf Lang was driving that Sunoco 917-30 that weekend. I was working the on track tow truck and had my picture taken in that 917-30. One of the Moorespeed 936 cars had a failure and we towed it into the pits and I got a pic with me sitting in the Sunoco car. I remember a few passes when Olov got that car to hook up and you could hear the revs rise when he caught air at the top of the hill.
true, the Bugatti Veyron can't beat it in a drag, or even a race course. The Porsche 917/30 is the fastest Can-Am car ever, beating the Chaparral 2J aswell, on the old Laguna Seca course, the Chaparral 2J did a lap of 58 seconds, in 1973 the Porsche 917/30 did it in 57 seconds. The car was said to go from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 1.9 seconds, with a top speed of 420km/h. I always thought the 2J was insane for a 70's car, 3 years later you get something even more insane.
that was a huge reason why Can-Am was so popular! Look what the motorheads of the day came up with given there being basically only a couple rules and engine displacement or minimum weights weren't limited. The beginning was 2 seats and maybe the wheels had to be no wider than the body. Skip forward 6yrs and you have the McLaren M20 debut and again, no rule on max tire width other than the body had to cover it. That means that had the tire manufacturers been able to make a 3ft wide tire, all the McLaren team need do is widen the body...!!! bwahahahaa That's insane!
I'd bet my grannys back teeth that something broke something in the chassis. They had an antiquated (compared to the Mclarens and everybody else) tubular space frame, and were notorious for breaking them. The all road legal Bugatti Veyron SS did reach a higher top speed than the Porsche 917-30 being purely a open rule no compromise Can-Am car.
roughly 40yrs later don't forget and only barely for top speed at that. I've read that the 917/30 was let loose at the Daytona Oval at full 1540-ish hp...full boost and was apparently clocked hitting 260mph on the back stretch. Please don't ask for a link as I've read so much on this series I couldn't begin to tell you from where lol
Damn I didn't watch that video all the way through and I knew exactly what it was. Olav was a cool dude and was full of racing stories. Damn shame he killed himself.
There's no doubt the 917/30 was a handful and it showed when the driver in the 6 car tried to tame it. Not to take anything from the driver, but that car may have been a bit much for his skill level. Badass nonetheless.
My wife and I were very fortunate to see this car at the Monterey Historics in '94, driven by Hans Stuck! When interviewed after his stint, he was asked to compare this car to other more modern cars (like the 956/962) he had driven. Hans Stuck did indeed give it some! I too was one of the folks who greeted him as he hopped out, that guy was BEAMING!
That twin turbo Shadow Mk III is nutty...almost sounds like a throatier Sauber Mercedes C9 or C11.
The driver of the sunoco 917/30 in this clip has balls to be powersliding a 4.4 million dollar car around
+Qnickel27 reconsider he has got to control 1500hp only Rwd, so yeah
+Qnickel27 lol it was only worth prob 2 million back then :-)
Not 1500hp, no way he's driving that car with max trubo pressure.
Yeah, probably between 900-1100 BHP, so around race trim, definitely not qualy trim, else the engine would blow after a few laps from the excessive boost presssure.
Add to that minimal ground effects and turbo lag and you have a very temperamental car.
Hilariously dangerous and fun.
1100hp continuously for endurance racing... In Qualifying and testing over 1500 hp. 0-200mph in less than 11 seconds. None can compare.
Brings back alot of memories!Very cool seing my Dad on film in the #48 Car..He raced for 50 yrs and that car was part of his identity..
MILTMINTERJR I watched your Dad in Edmonton CanAm.
Fantastic...I saw those cars race in the 70's at Watkins Glen, NY. The No 6 Porsch doesn't even sound like its working hard. This is a keeper.
2:05 3:53 HOLY SHIT the MK3 Shadow Twin Turbo is a monster!!
Gabriel Alvarez This video is pure porn for us Can Am lovers XD
Gabriel Alvarez I believe that may have been the turbo UOP 8 liter Shadow.
SLVRBLLT40 yes it is. Canepa had it for sale a few years back. 1200hp, 1800lbs/ft of baddass. www.canepa.com/inventory/racecar_1/Shadow/

that stealth at 2:05 OMFG what the hell is the acceleration on it?! I swear it seemed like it would outrun the 917/30
Kremer Drei true, I looked it up. thanks anyways
FromToastToRoast shadow Dn2, twin turbo v8 capable of more than 1400hp.
it's a Shadow MK-III twin turbo
Great video, thank you for the upload. I agree, that shadow IS bad ass. Looks like it's movin' pretty damn fast too.

Love this car, but it destroyed Can Am. It was on its way out, but Porsche made sure it went out like a backed up sewer blow out.
they sure did! Well put too! lol
Porsche 917/30 my favorite car .
Great video!
A Shadow DN2 Chevrolet Turbo, I believe currently for sale at Canepa in Scotts Valley, CA
4:25 nearly binned it. Bet he was wearing brown undies after that.

RIP Olaf and your bro
the wheelspin at 1:32 is batshit crazy
I love how everyone is babying thess priceless cars and here comes the sunoco 917 driver powersliding it at the end of the turn. I cant imagine taking the corkscrew in these cars
Thanks for your comment. It was spectacular in person and to video tape, and I still smile thinking about it.
The 917/30 driver is a nut! I love it! Drifting out of that corner. I’m dying laughing and hoping he doesn’t hit the wall. Just so fun to see.
He had the crowd in the pit lane cheering each lap…until he almost nosed it into the wall. Great car control with a very rare car, it was spectacular!
1100hp
Damn
@bentleyv8t That's a Shadow MKIII twin turbo... it never raced, always had mechanical issues. Jackie Oliver drove a normally aspirated one, again, it was fast but always broke.
1600 hp and not even so much as a roll bar for the driver. Insanity

the SHadow MKIII twin turbo @2:07.... UGH !!!! AWESOME !!!
They truly don't make racecars like this anymore, the 917/30 is incredible, all more power than the new Chiron and a power to weight ratio of 1,967 hp per ton.
The 917 is a super car , Pro touring car
@TtimWh
It´s the Porsche 924 GTS prototype for Le Mans, 1st in his class.
What a special day!
Is that a Shadow DN2 at 2:08?
maaaaaaan that menacing black shadow mk3!

Thx!
Saw that #0 interscope Porsche 935 win this weekend
hahaha i love it when it exits the corner ! :)
on this video, it honestly looks like the Shadow MKII pulls harder than the 917...
What car is the black one, with the number 102 on it?
true, the Bugatti Veyron can't beat it in a drag, or even a race course.
The Porsche 917/30 is the fastest Can-Am car ever, beating the Chaparral

MASSIVE \m/!
This is Laguna Seca or?
MrJustforfun75 Laguna Seca.
Holy crap. When was this taken? #6 is such a brute. Who was driving this car?
That was my dad in the #48..
4:22 Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when was this recorded ?
lmfao, hands are shaking after watching this.
August 1998
I'd bet my grannys back teeth that something broke something in the chassis.
They had an antiquated (compared to the Mclarens and everybody else) tubular space frame, and were notorious for breaking them.
It was so commonplace that they would pressurize the frame (hollow tubes remember), put a pressure guage on it and watch for the needle to drop.......
Can you really ever call a magnesium space frame antiquated :-)
che traversi!!!!!!!!
fuck yer, most awsome cars ever!
btw is that a 944 at 5:35 ???
Watch this and say there is nothing missing on electric cars!
I love the 917/30 but the car that always makes me think that has too much power is the Shadow at 2.06
The record books would prove you wrong......Thanks
The DN4 Shadow's (black car) sole purpose was to beat the Porsches.
bajacore Yep it was. watching the DN4 at the old Laguna Seca was just nuts from the hairpin up to turn four. I think foller was driving it. it's been many years since the old Can/Am days.
bajacore such a shame OPEC had to come along and ruin the fun. Can you imagine if the series had continued?! There was a Shadow DN4 with a turbo (twin possibly) as well as the same for the M20 well under way in development! And then whomever else after I'd imagine had this not occurred.
Jeff P either Follmer or perhaps Jackie Oliver.
at 4:23 I freaked out! Nooooo!
ice man is right he is jumping on the gas way to early, i mean hes got wheel in the car and it looks like he is just hammering tio gas, recipe for disaster for sure
@TYF6 My sentiments exactly....don't forget,it was unlimited displacement/hp.....my guess is 1800 hp to go 200 miles....yeah!!!!
its called vintage RACING not vintage CRASHING.
u sure u want electric cars?
A street legal Can-Am car?? That'll be the day.
I am not too sure it can beat a McLaren F1 GTR around most modern race tracks. Late 90's technology easily beats early 70's. The immense power advantage only matters on long straights.
As for a McLaren racecar in Formula 1. Not a chance.
Spool differential aka a tank through the corners...
@ANDREACANAM flat 12, come on you know that.
It appears that whomever it is he does not seem to be learning much about that turn with the /30
1100hp with a constantly locked "diff" will do that
This demonstrates how good Donahue was.
@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X
Awsome car!
yay I'm a top comment!
Not impressed by his driving at all!
@Scott Smeaton - The video is about the car.....not the driver!
