I've watched thousands of videos on workflow, project management, personal knowledge management systems plus software, tablets, and e-ink devices (etc) trying to get a sense of control over my work without much lasting success. THIS is the insight I needed and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.
More seriously, this guy with his bullet journal method has changed the life of a lot more people than he might think. There might be thousands of people in the future that may change and act locally because of what he did. He is obviously not the first but he made it accessible for the mass at the age of internet. People will change their life follow their goal and improve the life of others because of his contribution.
Love this! As a fellow product designer I constantly come across situations where people complicate their processes by adding in technology and unnecessary structure where it can be done manually in a moment, and vice versa - stubbornly rejecting optimization where it can decrease friction and time for maintenance. As for the devices - I deliberately don't install any entertainment or social media apps, or messengers on my iPad. It's reserved for studying and illustration mainly. It also gives this connection and context - once you're on iPad - it's study time. No context switching, no distractions. Looking forward to the other videos!
Wow, 😮 thank you for taking the time to make this video. I work in the tech world, and I had noticed my life and memories seemed more blurry than when I was a child. I believed tech to be some of the issue and as a Christian I have noticed an equal unhealthy relationship with consumerism. Hard does not always equal bad, slow doesn’t always equal inefficiency, and less with gratitude is better than plenty with strife (proverbs 17:1).
This is where I love your work Ryder. Your ability to sit and think on a subject, with discernment. As the years have passed, you haven’t become ideologically biased towards Luditism, as so many have, in order to create content. It’s a continuation of your philosophy of mindfulness, and intention. Great video and why I consider you the more zen version of Cal Newports message ( both understanding the need for deep work and computing discernment )
Wow, jut wow! This is so timely and on point. I look forward to hearing and learning more. Ryder, if you read this, "this series is your next book!!!!!" The transcripts alone are golden.
I have a boox note air 3c. I use it as my bullet journal, ereader, sketchbook, and I listen to audiobooks on it. It writes much more comfortably than pen and paper and it takes up less space. I have a hand injury so journaling had become difficult for me the eink tablet in color with a great pen and writing tech has changed the way I use a bullet journal. I even long form journal now. It's really been the best of both worlds for me. Our technology has advanced enough that I can carry 1000 books with me and several journals and a sketchbook in one form fitting object. I even decorate my journals now with images that I didn't have to have the space to store before. The boox note air 3c is one of the best color eink tablets on the market that has built in software that doesn't require a subscription to a app to use.
This is such a great video that it hit me on an emotional level. How much technology do we really need to make us happy? You've perfectly encapsulated many of the ideas I've been struggeling with recently that I didn't know how to precisely put into words. Thank you!
a friend introduced me to a Bullet Journal system and as a person who loves to write and mind map it made it so much more Interesting to me. I Came across your book as well and picked it up. Its much more than just a Book on Bullet Journaling. It was one of the easier reads for me this year I finished it (and took notes personal book reports). I enjoyed the book very much and enjoy the videos just as much. Reading has always been one of my harder things to do, to sit and not be distracted, but active reading and finding books that interest me and dedicating time to reading has become a silent pleasure for myself. Loved the Book, love the Bullet Journal System and thank you very much for the Content on here as well.
Thank you. Your message resonated with me. Somehow intersects consciousness with technology. Your comment on integrity is a beacon of hope for creators.
I used to work in IT and over the past few years i find i am increasingly frustrated with tech. I do more and more tasks without tech or with reduced tech. We've gotten to a point where we dont question the tech. We have it to have it, and where it once was supposed to make things easier, it now can make things more difficult. We seem to want things to be overly complicated, ignoring the simple solutions.
Omg you are great at what I’m thinking and been able to explain exactly what I feel, and understand with tech that was meant to give us free time and improve human intelligence. Eg. In satnav we lose the use of our ability to homing pigeons of routes, reading signage, remembering buildings etc I use the Goldilock analogy in everything too! Find that balance is just so hard and time is so precious.
You are definitely speaking and put into context everything I am trying to achieve with tech and keeping my brain healthy without falling into the rabbit whole(s)!
Apenas está comenzando esta serie y ya puedo ver con claridad lo que podemos hacer y la claridad que nos trae esta nueva forma de ver el minimalismo gracias, Ryder C.
Wow ryderrr amazing work i believe we as your readers also somewhat share your thoughts and thinking because we are essentially inspired by your work This video was a long due.......
At the same time, interesting to see the choice of the “3 devices” that you chose…because all three of them have seen a sudden spike in interest and also marketing push, in the last 3 to 6 months. It will be interesting to see your unbiased view of them in the context of “conscious computing”, especially when so many UA-camrs have been raving about these products the last several weeks and months and many of those have been sponsored by those companies.
I'm very interested in hearing you speak more on AI in the context of intentional use of time and how it may assist us with productivity... and what we can do to remain human/ourselves without giving AI/LLM all the credit.
Conscious computing scale Input -getting information into your mind -too many = noise Throughput -How to use the information you get -Usability. Entering and working with information -We don't want so few features that we struggle to get things done Stayput -How connected are you? -Focus. Having what you need to work -Impulse control Compute -How much work is being done by you? -Technology helps offload things we don't care about Output -Result. How closely does you creation match your intention -How much of you is left? What do you want to create? What is your intention? Note to self: -choose the right device when working (Computer for editing, laptop for research, phone for communication, etc.) -use AI works I can outsource -keep a dedicated journal (again).
I'd like to know how you feel about stonepaper? Especially as a paper notebook person. It's a nice solution to keep using your bullet journal and especially with the idea of your app to store everything, it seemed like a nice solution. There are also stonepaper notebooks with dots.
I currently use the reMarkable 2 tablet to write my yoga flows (stick figures). I like the ability to move part of a sequence to another part of the page. Even though I could duplicate an existing flow. I always start from scratch to make the flow new for me and my students. It's like writing on paper but it's forgiving when I want to move things around or erase parts. I'm looking forward to hearing your review on this.
This is why I am concerned about people speeding up UA-cam videos. We won't be able to stand people talking at a normal rate of speech. We will retreat even more into tech. Are we going to start telling people to record themselves so that we can listen to them sped up? Or avoid them all together?
Yes and no on the „speeding up“. We were taught at university (linguistics), that humans speak at very different speeds - and only consider their own speed „normal“. I used to click away from a lot of videos and podcasts because the slow speech was driving me nuts. Speeding up to 1,2x still sounds normal but helps me keep my focus with slower speakers. It‘s especially helpful for many people with adhd, to keep their brain engaged.
I know that stuff... I am just saying we are on a slippery slope right now. In the past, people had to just learn to live with people that spoke slower. Now we don't have to do that. We can tailor everything to our liking which will mean we will be less tolerant. In the case of adhd, people won't have to develop skills they might have been able to develop with practice. They'll just get a crutch.
Another interesting idea i use is to divide my digital ecosystem into two accounts First account for education and second account for entertainment and stay 6 daydrof the week logged in to the education epsection of my ecosystem and saturdays spent in entertainment section
You mentioned about at 14:00 that you fed your own material to an AI to produce a newsletter for you. This kind of AI seems like it would be useful. Do you recommend an AI engine. Don't want one that is so broad that it fowls up or takes over or uses our product to benefit its database and others.
You misunderstand digital minimalism. Cal Newport's own definition: Digital minimalism is a philosophy that helps you question what digital communication tools (and behaviors surrounding these tools) add the most value to your life. It is motivated by the belief that intentionally and aggressively clearing away low-value digital noise, and optimizing your use of the tools that really matter, can significantly improve your life.
Remarkable Paper Pro came yesterday. What is your opinion on this kind of e-ink notebook? I'm choosing between Remarkable and a Caran d'Ache Fountain Pen to start journaling or maybe BuJo. On one side, I am a tech geek. On the other side I have so called digital cognitive overload. That is why I think, although I like new tech, I will choose a fountain pen with a paper notebook. To ease my mind and relief stress. What do you think Ryder?

Wow, that statement at 4:18 is powerful. “The more automated your life is the less meaningful it becomes.” 🤯
This statement stayed in my head too. I will write it in my Common Place hmmm Bullet journal.
More seriously, this guy with his bullet journal method has changed the life of a lot more people than he might think.

This content feels human, creative, and the best part, it’s that inspires me in new ways! Thanks
17:43 “How much of you is actually left?” What a timely and poignant question to ask in our time. I look forward to the rest of this series!
Love this!

This channel needs more subs.

so excited for this series, thank you for continuing to make thoughtful videos about these important topics!
Thank you. Your message resonated with me. Somehow intersects consciousness with technology. Your comment on integrity is a beacon of hope for creators.
As always I highly value your insights and findings. Thanks and keep it up!
I am watching this video on my iPad and taking notes on my BuJo. :)

Yeah!! Our age desperately needs more thinking about this topic! Thank you Ryder!
You seem to have a knack for nailing it just right! Love your videos! Thank you!!!
Need a book on Conscious Computing please 🙏
Thank you Ryder! Great thoughts and thoughtfulness. Appreciate it.

Great intro and explanation to this series! Cant wait to see more!
Wow, lots to think about in this video... 🤔 Well presented!
I can sense another breakthrough idea (like the bullet journal) coming from Ryder.
Very thought proving and deep….no surprise to see this coming from you Ryder. Will look forward to the series.

Well that's content I did'nt know I needed, until now.
I love this 😊 Breath of fresh air 🧡
Thank you for sharing these thoughts ⚡️
Great video! I haven’t heard technology talked about in this way before.
Interesting, thanks

Wonderful metaphor about speed
Thank you!
Thank you for watching, as always, Lori
Steven Covey said that technology makes a wonder servant, but a horrable master
🤯🤯🤯🤯 thank you !
Just wondering when another video in the series us going post?
Just went live! Check it out ua-cam.com/video/TXyaiPqUWXA/v-deo.html

for the first time, we are intentionally regressing against technology
I'm happier with the least amount of applications on my devices.

It's NOT the tech that's at fault it's the use of anti-social media on them that's the problem.
"Dying from lack of democracy" lol
Under capitalism the the goal of tech is to increase productivity, or entertainment. Becoming a superhuman is not one of the goals.
I would think the goal of capitalism is to make products and sell them.
@@brendalg4 Yes, but we are talking about for what purpose the tech is used under capitalism.
