The BMW M3 is now the size of the E39 BMW M5, which is actually fine, since the E39 M5 was basically perfect. In competition trim you only get an 8-speed automatic, and our press car is fully loaded up with crazy options, costing just under $100,000. While we weren't the biggest fans of the two-door M4, re-framing the whole package as a sedan changes our tune quite a bit. Matt and Zack have a morning blast in the ugliest, but fastest BMW M3 in history.
BMW provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

The M mode button my guy, the M mode button on the center console next to the shifter. Solves your tach problem
It looks like they never do any research on the cars they'll be driving.
But doesn't that also change the suspension settings ? or is that configurable on the M mode as well ?

As someone who was absolutely obsessed with BMWs, and M cars in particular, growing up in the 90s: this car does nothing for me.
Ditto. I was a fanboy all the way; owned E93 and F80 M3, F83 M4, F85 X5M and F10 M5. This is the first year since 2010 I haven't owned a BMW and I can't say I have any desire to go back.

@@mastoslayerica How do you like the LT1? I used to think only Germans could truly make performance cars but American rides have been very impressive lately.
@@stevehinkley9099 I love the LT1. The interior is downgrade compared to the E92M3 but the torque is phenominal , 50% more than the M-Car and it still pulls hard all the way to redline. The steering is quick with good feel, it corners flat and brakes are strong. The visiiblity is not great but you get used to it. The A10 trans is much faster than the DCT in an E92 and the manual is solid from what I've read.
BMW used to have perfect analog gauges that they kept with for a very long time. As soon as they went digital, they ruined them.

I always like the collaborative reviews and appreciate Zach's seat feedback especially when Matt drives.
I didn't want the carbon seats but I love the performance. So I lost 21 pounds and ordered the normal seats 🤣
Ok, so for $100k - this horrendous thing -or, the nicest E39 M5 you can find for $70k AND a $30k M3 (E46 or E9x)?
You make a good point. You can get a decent E39 M5 for 30-40k, and then get an E90. It’d be cheaper than this. But I still think the non-comp M3 with the 6 speed is really good. Much better than F80. Not in terms of looks, but driving-wise this is much better tuned to handle its power than the F80 ever did. If it drives well, that’s all I care about. Plus, the proportions actually look ok on the M3, while the M4 looks terrible. Especially from the side where you notice how weird the back looks.
E46 for fun and weekends and a $5k Acura for daily use. Spend the rest on gas, tires, and track days!
@@infidel900rr this guy gets it
Genius
No matter how you look at it I would never be able to justify spending 100k new on a m3. I'd just put 48k in the nicest mk5 supra I could find in red🤩 and then maybe spend the rest on something that is appreciating but still dailyable like a Lexus lx470 (06-07 model year) or GX470 and maybe do some light off road mods and save the rest
I think I might be the only person who actually likes the new grille lol
No you are not. I picked my 2023 g80 comp xdrive this past weekend. It’s new so I am going to adhere to the break but it’s an amazing car. It’s better looking in person
This review along with a few others helped me when optioning my car. I wanted manual, but wasn’t sure on the seats. In the end, I opted against them since this is my daily driver as well. I couldn’t be happier.
God that color combo is HIDEOUS
Agree to disagree
Baby poo. Kinda suits the front end. Aka it's all crap 😂
@@zatharos6427 Are you serious lol
As far as the gauge cluster is concerned-there is a M sport setting where the cluster changes to the middle and is larger and easier to see. Then of course there is a heads up display that has different modes for better visuals if its needed. From just the speed in digital form to a full tachometer.
I'm glad you mentioned the colour choices. As they are sooo badly matched. reminds me of a Aventador that's been for sale in the UK for AGES. It's turquoise outside with a complete orange interior that's highlighted in turquoise... Must of been a footballer who ordered it.
And the nose kidneys have gotten so big it's basically a 1930 Bugatti grill
I was looking at the configurator and man, an M4 comp in Isle of Man Green with white leather inside looks amazing. You don't even have to go as far as comparing it to a Bugatti, just look at the BMW 328 from the 1930s.
Link? I love this wacky color combos.
Front is like a bastardized Alfa Romeo
Lol
Even that’s an insult to Alfa Romeo design
Gotta love that this is the first car ever which looks better with a front license plate
Especially a wide European plate.
Nothing can fix the looks of this car.
The seats are $3800 but you get TWO seats though. So thats $1900 for one, there is not a single electronically adjustable carbon fiber bucket seat on the market or aftermarket that can do what these seats do for at that price point, on top of that the come with an OEM warranty. That's a lot of value for the seats alone, regardless of how you personally feel about them/ how they are used.
Not really, BMW is charging you $3800 EXTRA over the cost of a standard seat. You have to take into account how much the standard seats are worth.
You know when you get that awesome feel and you turn around to look back at your car as you walk away....well.... I ain't turning back to look at this thing 🤣
I was going to get a new G80 M3 comp but the dealer had a 2018 F80 M3 CS with low miles on it. I ended up with the M3 CS for one simple reason: the DCT. I drive in sequential mode 100% of the time and the ZF transmission does not have the feel I’m looking for in a sports car. The DCT is engaging, tactile, and vicious. It has a distinct character. The ZF might be more capable...but it doesn’t feel like anything. It shifts smooth like a Camry. If I was still shopping for new M3 I’d only consider the base model with the manual.
You made the right choice!
Call me when I can get the S58 in the next M2 model.
This is the answer
Love your impersonation of Jonny Lieberman, spot on!
I never understood why with BMW's digital dash they don't give you the option of having a traditional looking speedometer and tachometer as an overlay with navigation.

Hope Toyota put that engine in the MK5 Supra. With a some weight reduction it could be special.
Imma have to with Matt on this one; the Competition model has really been slotted to seem more like an AMG C63"S". An M3 CS may be more akin to a Porsche GT3, and justify such "extravagant" seats

Yes I remember CONTRA!!!! All KONAMI games had the 30 man cheat code. Thanks ZACH
about the remembering settings, could be that this is specially changed for America. Here in Europe we have the settings that get wiped after a start because it is legally required to be there to comply with emissions... obviously that could be different from model to model depending on how they managed to meet their emissions though. but thats the reason behind it. very very annoying driving an automatic transmission with start-stop shutting off on you when you're the first in line at a stop sign....
9:27 "this lump... where your balls don't go" LMAO!
unless the seat has an anti-submarine belt attachment under that carbon piece, then those ball busters are the dumbest thing ever.
Is the engine noise authentic or from speakers
Give me the most base version possible, auto or stick and call it a day. $90k for an M3 seems like way too much.
That's what you say but the people who actually BUY these cars new say otherwise. And BMW is gonna do what the buyer says.
Thanks for being honest about the seats. So many reviewers say the carbon buckets are comfortable, I’ve driven the car , their not, their rock hard and in my opinion completely unacceptable as a daily. Cheers guys.
You don't need to go for carbon seat. There is a normal seat which should be more comfortable.

Its a shame to see that the “competition” version is the ideal M to get these days. Before you could just buy the normal M and it’ll still feel like a drivers car but in here the comp is almost a necessity to have a proper M3. I guess its what happens when you artificially limit a car on launch instead of giving the best to offer in the beginning and steadily improve it over the years of it’s life cycle

"It (M3 manual) wouldn't feel as tight as this". Well that's an odd statement, because the only difference between the G80 manual and the automatic comp is just that, transmissions, and 2lbs of boost (473hp to 500hp).
