  • I got my 981 Porsche GT4 with Michelin Pilot 4S tires, but it came with Cup 2 tires from the factory. I talk about why the 4S is a better tire choice for me and why people either keep or remove their Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

      One of my friends has them as the OEM tire on his BMW M4 that he has been driving as a daily driver here in California during our very wet winter. Other than having to slow down and be more careful on braking and turns, they haven't been a problem.
      I recently put them on my Nissan 370Z that I daily drive and haven't had a problem. I had a Porsche that had Yokohama A008p tires that had worn down to slicks that I occasionally drove on wet roads with no problems, with sensible changes in my driving style.

      @@arnisimor If I’m honest, I can’t tell the difference between the two…only on the invoice from the tyre company 😂 the 4s have a guarantee around the distance you can travel on them; the Cup 2s don’t. I believe that the Cup 2s make a difference on the track but if it’s for road use then I’ve seen no noticeable difference with having the 4s

    I just went from the Cup 2’s to the PS4S’s on my 2019 GT3RS. Initially, The car seems to be a bit quieter, but still responsive and will have a better idea when I track it in the spring. At this point I’m happy that I made the switch.

    I love cup 2's and had them on my daily. Cup 2 R's have been out for a while but it's the first time they're offering them as an option with the gt3rs, I think. Cup 2's have less tread but I slipped less so I think they lasted about the same. You can hear gravel in the wheel wells like you're driving over tar because they're so sticky. Wish I had them on my current car, but I have P zeros which are garbage.

    I raced for many years Have owned many exotics including McLarens P Turbos Porsche GT3 Cup racecar etc
    Last 10 years have tracked McLarens Porsches and a Corvette
    Have been active on the McLaren Forum for 11 years where
    the Michelin 4 S is the most popular tire and is also used by casual trackday drivers
    Many of my track quick buddies track Porsche GT3’s using Cup 2’s which are not a good street tire for them and was not for me on my first Mac
    I have separate track only forged wheels for my Corvette and for my Macs with DOT tires ( semi slick Goodyear F1 Supercar 3R’s ) These tires perform close to Hoosier R7’s in grip and wear
    The author of this excellent video knows what he is talking about
    The base Cup 2 is just OK as a track tire but too harsh and too low traction for street from my experience especially in a GT3 or GT4 although younger drivers don’t mind a stiff ride
    😊
    with Mac owners even if they track casually

    Cup2's have different variations, make sure you buy the Porsche specific N1 version. I believe sizing can vary slightly even with the same 295 size by using the Mercedes or generic version cup2

    I have a Nissan 370Z sport coupe which had the PS4S until recently. They were very good tires that got 35k miles with no rotations and still had a little tread left. My only complaint with them was that the steering wasn't as precise as the OEM Bridgestone Potenzas before and that they were less responsive and more vague.
    The tires I have now are the PS Cup 2(240) and the steering is responsive and very precise. Noise and comfort are about the same but the rolling resistance is probably a little higher. I know they won't do well in the wet, but that's okay. I'm estimating that I might get about 28k miles on them with a little luck. I'm glad that I made the change.

      Thank you for sharing your experience with the PS4 and the PS2 tires. Since you tried both, you can tell the difference between them and pick the right one for your driving style. I like the PS4 since I drive fast and not too fast and more of a cars and coffee car than a track car.

      @@DriversTherapy I think the PS4S is a better overall tire as a daily driver for a high performance car. It is excellent in all categories and well worth its price, in my opinion. For me, the greater steering precision and response were worth the Cup 2's drawbacks. I don't think that either tire is a bad choice for a high-performance sports car.

    I tracked my GT4 with PS4's and they got chewed up and chunked very quickly. Switched to Cup 2s and getting 25 heat cycles on them without any chunking. I feel like the Cup 2's are a much better option for tracking the car.

    • @eurly93
      @eurly93 2 місяці тому

      Of course they are. They're designed differently and geared towards tracking. Ps4s are designed to be the ultimate street tire. Cup 2's need heat to operate properly and they maintain operating for longer period at temp. They are nerfed track tires to make them safe enough for street use but they really aren't designed for street use. PS4S work at close to peak performance without getting super hot, but they overheat sooner. Tires are just like brake pads. Track and street design are not comparable and it's not really possible to be good for both.

    You're quite right. However, I just don't understand why people who buy a 'Sports Car' want to ride on 'Tourer Tires'. It was tuned to be run with Cup 2s or track tires and even on canyon roads. First they want to buy an expensive car and then cheap out on the most important element of a drive - The tires. I know rich dummies buy these kind of cars for bragging rights. But those who know the value only run the Cup 2 or other semi slicks (Cup 2 equivalent).

    • @DriversTherapy
      @DriversTherapy  Рік тому +4

      Cup 2 tires are great. 4S tires are just as expensive as Cup 2 tires so it’s not about going cheap, I guess it depends on the way the owner uses it. My 4S tires perform perfectly for daily life and sole track day fun.

    • @ratspan1
      @ratspan1 Рік тому +5

      Disagree about cheaping out. If anything buying and running PS4S is a sign that you aren’t following trends and conventional wisdom and are open to new and better solutions depending on your use case.
      I’ve had several GT cars and threw PS4S tires on my gt3 RS and it was MUCH more enjoyable on the road. As stated in the video I have r compound tires and wheels for track duty. OP is spot-on in my estimation and too many people buy cup 2 tires because it’s what is “meant” to be on the car and for the optics when other people see the car and look at the tires.

      So look you got a Cup 2 on your GT3RS type of car you only take out for a spin few hours on an exceptionnal ocasion, planned sunny day (excluding any track senario here...) you're a knowledgeable driver, you know you're gonna be able to drive quite fast, yeah you're gonna love those tyres after 5 minutes of absolute non-grip, best thing ever, they'll perform better than a P4S at that aswell. But that's about the only case scenario i can think of, otherwise it's just too risky.
