Basically, is it fair that a 17 year old school boy faces the choice of six months in the army or in civilian service or he goes to jail with a criminal record whilst his 17 year old female classmate faces none of these choices, and can go about her business going to uni or work or travel undisturbed by the state? And women, who are exempt, cluelessly administer and endorse the system like these politicians

In the Netherlands conscription is "suspended" (not abolished) and was recently made to apply to women as well.
Acctualy moast austrians (including me ) dont have a problem with conscription + they thought there very interesting and useful things + what you as a foreigner could know about austrians opinion on that
Seriously? Forcing people into military service and calling it "useful"? Wake up. Not everyone wants to be conscripted against their will. It's time to stop ignoring individual autonomy and start exploring better solutions. This isn't rocket science.
Conscription in Austria is a relic of the past, more about symbolism than substance. Mandatory military service in Austria is like trying to teach a cow to yodel - utterly pointless.

3. They thaught there realy useful things
4. You can easly avoid conscriptions if you have good relations with your dosctor

1. You’re forced to do either of those options. Both are forced labor. The civilian service lasts even longer and it’s just ridiculous considering you get paid way lower than the minimum wage while being INVOLUNTARILY FORCED to do this
2. Most of the population = old boomers and women (both aren’t included in the conscription system) which is tragicomedy. Old people and women voted in favor to maintain conscription in 2013 referendum, while the young generation voted against
3. “Really useful things” like overcoming boredom being locked in the barracks? Like getting yelled at by some idiotic middle aged commander? Like getting a truck drivers license??? Please just stop saying such obvious B.S.

Basic military service should be available to both sexes between the age of 18 - 22, 2 terms of 8 months per term.
If you choose not to fulfill your duty to the country,no problem. But in failing to do so,you would give up your right to vote & give up your right to run for public office.

why 8 months? Basic training last at most 3 months at best. Either you go the Israel route to create a "professionalized" conscript force with 3 years of slavery or take the minimalist approach to give people military training in the least amount of time and be done with it
How about approaching it another way: I voluntarily choose to forfeit the right to ever own or use a firearm and as a result I'm exempt from having to serve. Sort of like an inversion of the Swiss system in a way I guess you could say.
I am 24 years old, I wouldn't mind getting into obligatory military training, where do I sign up as a Romanian?
Are you aware that we have the alps? Maybe we use sodiers also for some emergency scenarios. And btw with a letter from your doctor you can easily avoid it. Like i did. 😅

I highly doubt that bunch of unmotivated 18 year olds wasting 6 months of their lives in the barracks (so called kaserne) are going to be any useful in alpine rescue missions or whatever you intend.
For emergency scenarios you have professionals who are willing to do it, not bunch of dudes who are forced to sacrifice their life without their consent

This is russian propaganda nothing else. Many countries have these laws still women join the military in these countries. Better to get the women that want to be soldiers then wasting money on training those that wont. Even if that means getting less women in the military

This video is purely made from a humanitarian leftist perspective of mine. Why do you have this unhealthy obsession to automatically label every complaint about some western country “Russian propaganda”. Get your head together.
Anyways, the fact that other countries use the same system doesn’t justify anything. In some countries, (tho I find it unethical and immoral) conscription at least makes the slightest sense. Like the Baltics, Finland etc. However in Austria this system is run solely by nationalistic primitives who get org@$m after watching military parade and stuff like that….

It'll never be abolished mate. Industrial scale warfare requires conscription for any nation to survive. Even the US Army came to this conclusion after studying the war in Ukraine in that the volunteer army is at the end of it's life.

As a side note regarding military service it's a must especially if you live in a messed up place for example I was stationed in the middle of the damn sahara for a year when you're doing it or even before doing it you see it as a pure waste of time, but the skills you'll gain as a man will help you a lot, leading, controlling rage, to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and being able to shoot a gun/know some CBQ, squad, regiment tactics etc...
It's also good because in the event of something fucky going on, your country can call back millions without having to retrain them and wast time doing so
