  • For the first time ever, Denmark plans to draft both men and women into military service. It's only the third European country to do so, after Norway and Sweden.
Beginning in 2026, the government wants to call up 5,000 co-ed conscripts a year. In addition, basic military service is to be extended from four to eleven months. The government says the decisions are in reaction to the war in Ukraine and the Russian threat in Western Europe's backyard.

Since he asked about retention - I am a Danish Veteran with 10 years of experience and two deployments along US soldiers. One in Afghanistan and one in Irak.
In 2013 the defense budget cut a lot of benefits for soldiers. And since a Danish Soldier is employed like any other employee - We can quit our job with 3 month notice (although not while deployed as far as I know..) We have a union etc. The pay is so low that without the benefits - young Danes don't see service as a feasible career path anymore.
It has become something contemporary before "getting a real job" - I served 10 years because I had a contract predating the cuts and was saving up points I could take a masters degree with, while on full pay - rather than doing it on the "students benefits" program (I know it sounds super spoiled.. but a lot of soldiers don't want to end up not being able to afford taking higher education without ending in crippling debt) I have a family now, and studying on Student Benefits helps, but it would not be enough compared to my salary with the army.
I am following with a keen eye on how the Danish Government will solve retention.. because the soldiers union has been warning the government of retention issues since 2013.. How I see it, when I was serving, It was the people with old contracts that stayed. people with the new cut down contracts came and went.. And slowly the pool of people with old contracts just concluded. Here we are.

I took half my education on the army benefits. and now half on students benefits. Right now all that goes directly to the household.. which means It is my wife who pays for all the "fun stuff"
I know it sounds super previlleged.. and it is. But the Danes know this. So mos people would rather get a propper education and job while they live lives that has less expenses. If that makes sense...
There is a danger that if you make an career in the army. That you will get stuck because of house loans, childrens expenses etc. and most danes dont want that.
So.. if the pay remains low, the army needs to find another carrot to keep retention.

@@Ph33NIXx I'm a Dane and I'm for the education benefits from being in the army. I have friends why have been in the army the year where we haven't been in any real conflicts.
What is most horrifying is the lack of skills they've gained there. We are about 5-7 years in and they are practically worse of than right after high school.
I think they need something to incentivize them to finish the education when they get out.
But unless you are living way beyond your means I don't think you are going spiral into unfixable amount of debt while getting an education.
Either you are doing one of the easy ones and you will have time to also work or else you will likely be paid well enough to fix it after if you do the hard ones.

    • @Ph33NIXx
      @Ph33NIXx 2 місяці тому

@@sumsar01 Well i am aswel(for army benifits - as i recall it was a percentage of our pay that was put to the side any way) - I see a direct line between the falling quality of our soldiers skill level, and retention because of the low pay and "no carrot" to reward you for investing your youth in it.
I am not sure what you mean by the lack of skills. While it is a very difficult thing to put the skills you gain as a soldier into a CV. (Which is why the soldiers union has a team that help translate military skills into practical skills you can write on a CV)
I am not sure what to get from your statement about "lack of skill" - I think in general that you will need to brush up basic math, language etc. if you want to take higher education after a few years out of school. But I also think it is very healthy to experience life outside of school. The Danish Soldiers Union HKKF has made many surveys on how Danish Veterans fair in society. And In general find that it is a population group who are doing well when taking higher education after end of service.
I don't know about incentivizing them to finish school.. I don't have the data to support a claim either fore or against. But I do think it is important to have a wide verity of people from all social layers and backgrounds. People who are theoretical good and people with a background more in the craftsmen field. To ensure that the army does not turn overly right winged. Its actually a reason I support conscription - I was drafted.. I had not intended to serve. I think with a volunteer basis, you start getting a specific type of person, and can create right winged echo chambers. Also you need people when they are young and healthy - It takes time to make a good soldier. I would argue it takes 2-3 years before your good at it.
Well... It all depends. There are many things that go into a households economy. Do they have a bank loan for a house? Are they living in Copenhagen area with kids and families? A place were an family friendly apartment easily can cost 3x the study benefits.
Once you have family you cant just move into a cheap study dome.. not that there seem to be a lot of them either. Do your family require a car? - cars are expensive in maintenance etc. You can easily get to a situation were the economy could spiral into debt - not to mention the "stress" that the family would have to endure while one of the adults are not bringing home a salary.
Also a lot of the "students" jobs are hard to get once you become a certain age, or unfeasible because the working hours are after you need to take the kids home from the daycare. I mean, me and my family can certainly feel that the economy has shrunken by 30% after I ran out of the Army benefits.
While it is true that if you play your cards right, you will get the economy back on the footing after graduating. But what good is that if the family split because of the induced stress of having a vulnerable economy for 3 years. And sure, you can pick an "easy" education - but should you be limited to easy educations because you chose a life in the army, and now your body is too worn, or the job has become unfulfilling?
I don't know. I think there are a lot of variables that are hard to just setup like that. All I can say is that, since CU (the army benifits) were cut from contracts in 2013 - the people who were hired on the new contracts mostly stayed 1-2 years. Slowly the number of soldiers on the old contract form dwindled, as their contracts concluded.
When I left, a significant portion of the soldiers quit every year, meaning it felt like we had to start over every year.. never getting to a excelent level. This frustrated a lot of the old soldiers - which made them seek other fields of work. And now we have a situation were the army is losing between 1000 to 2000 a year (which is a lot considering how small our army is) - the tasks are ever more.. and cracks are starting to show in the façade.

@@Ph33NIXx I have a weird bias about education. I have a masters in physics, but I'm not a fan of most long educations because I often think they either teach you very little, are to easy or teach you in a very inefficient way.
But I also work in a one of the few fields where you can get very far by being self taught. So what care about is, is can people do, learn and think.
But when I'm talking about their skills from the army I'm not talking their book skill. Because that is not really something I care that much about.

Sure basic training is tough, but it ends relatively fast then the boredom comes. Conscripts arent held to the standards of the professional military anyway. BTW I was there too, they needed someone who could code in basics, I applied so I sticked for a while, it was entirely different serving there. But theres a misunderstanding in people about these structures, although I worked in military RnD, it was a basic requirement, that I could handle the duty of a basic grunt anytime, theres no such thing as "truckdriver" in military, the onlyones who arent required to be able to fight are medics and priests.

I agree with an earlier comment that not all people, men or women, are suited for military life, including the group culture, discipline, hierarchy and "unlimited risk" that goes along with front-line roles. The key question is how both women and men can contribute to national defence. If conscription returns more widely in other countries, then some form of mandatory service (including the alternative of civil or support service) for all young women and men (barring health issues) should be required. The real point is that burden-sharing has to be felt to be real, across all levels and classes in society. For example, going to university or other form of higher education should not be a reason to avoid mandatory service. There should be no exceptions for the wealthy, the influential or the well-connected, and certainly no way to "buy yourself out" of the service.

    • @Riri_734
      @Riri_734 2 місяці тому

We have national service where i'm from. There are other civilian oriented routes for service like in the civil defence or the police force. You get roles like medics, nurses, admins, logistics, cyber security, firefighters, constables. Usually enlistees from religious backgrounds or pursuing religious studies will be funneled to these roles(non-firearm only). There are of course non-combat roles in the military but they still are required to undergo combat training which is much tougher in addition to firearm training so these aren't feasible. The military is still the huge majority though but there are alternatives that are proven to work for the society.
There's also no discrimination between social classes when it comes to service here. You can defer for higher education but will need to serve after. Even if you're rich or famous, you have to serve or you'll serve in prison. Those that flee overseas to avoid duty can't return to the country or they get jailed when they return. Those with health issues or disabilities still serve(in civil roles mostly) unless it severe then you're exempted. However that's all very dependent on the level of corruption in your country which Denmark shouldn't be having an issue with. On occasion there is favoritism within service if you're the child of a politician for example. I've seen that to an extend. The only ones that do not serve are expats, foreigner workers that work and live here with their families, which have been a point of contention as they get all the benefits without having to serve.

It shouldn’t be women, too. It should be women only.
Men have had the responsibility of protecting the homeland in armed combat since the dawn of human civilization.
As a progressive and inclusive modern society, there exists a responsibility and a duty to correct and balance out this injustice.
We need to bridge the 99.9999% male combat casualty gap.

Can’t help but wonder what the rules for service are. What exceptions there are. Lots of armies simply won’t take those who don’t perform above a certain physical or mental level. If you are particularly unfit could you avoid being called up? Or is it just for those who suffer with some physical or mental illness who may avoid it.

In the Netherlands both boys and girls receive a letter from the Defense Secretary on their 18th birthday informing them that they are now liable for military service and may be called up at any moment. National service is still on the statute books and only the duty to report for initial training has been suspended. Restoring it requires only the signature of the Defense Secretary on a single document.

I don't know about this. Society in general isn't raising healthy civilian's, not to mention soldiers. This feels a bit like running before you can walk.
It also feels a little desperate. If you can't recruite more men, women will do.
Not to mention, how are they going to cope with women's needs, like period pads and tampons? What about Rape, contraceptives, and unwanted pregnancies?
I don't know how good soldier training can be. I don't know how they'll cope with product shortages (which could be an extreme weakness). Imagining woman bleeding from bellow on the battlefield is quite scary to me.
Feel free to quote more facts (maybe I need to watch this again) but I think feeling uneasy about this is okay.

@@hhhhhhhhh1071 It's a little more complicated than that - the "Enemy At The Gates" scene certainly wasn't a tactic used in the later years of the war, except in punishment battalions. Early on things were pretty desperate, so it happened more than once. Point is, many men and women served with distinction in the Red Army without being in a human wave attack, the army had evolved into an effective fighting force by 1945, and nobody said Stalin was "going woke". Of course, that's because it would have got them shot, but the point still stands.
