Thanks for video Paul. Personally, I liked the 1st couple of photos better than the bracketed set. Nice to see Mrs C join you on these ventures. Also, seen photo's of this place in autumn, colours really 'pop'. Maybe a future venture?

Terrific photos. I'd be happy with any of them but if I had to choose image at 12.30 is amazing. I haven't heard of Borrowdale Watermill. I was thinking of springtime but they may have shut it off by then. Thanks for posting

Great location there Paul and one I have seen recently on another channel where he had the same access problems as you. I suspect that this will be a location that will be off limits in the not too distant future. My favourite image is the one at 12:30 where you have managed to eliminate the sky and also got the separation between the tree branch and the watermill. The greens on the rocks bordering the stream are really vibrant and are such an integral part of the photo. Nice to see Mrs C out with you and her images were really good too 📷👏

Autumn 🍂 is probably the best time for this location and just after a rain fall.
It's a lovely location, I'm off there tomorrow on a workshop.

I have been there a couple of times now, it’s my favourite location I think though you can only take so many pictures of a mill.
I was a bit surprised to find that the mill itself is purely decorative and none functional, but it is effective.
I do believe you are now no longer permitted to enter the grounds as it is private land. I think the owners and those that rent it got a little pissed off with photographers tipping up? Not sure if that is still the case?
    Thanks for sharing

Hi Paul an excellent vlog here some great images too.
BUT can you put me right on one point I've always been led to believe the mill is on private property. Which stops me in my tracks I would love to go to the mill as I'm lucky enough to live in the lake District and it's only an hour or so's drive away from me.
The reason I've posted today is I wouldn't want to see people getting hammered by the police and ultimately being taken to court.
That said once again excellent vlog cheers Mike.

there is a private sign up the drive but we did not go up there, we walked across the river and up the other bank, no sign over there...

Looks to be a difficult location to photograph but you made the most of it.
The tree trunk on the upper left is a bit of a pain alright. I usually keep a chainsaw in the boot for such eventualities 😂😂😂📷👍

I went in September and it is a challenging subject to capture. All the points you make about keeping the sky out of the shot are spot on , it’s awkward amongst those rocks. It’s also really dark , with a big contrast to the background. There were Private signs up when we went , so I walked up the beck. Heard that it is being turned into a holiday let. Get there while you can folks.

Next time you're out Paul, use aperture priority and try 3 shots iso 400, 640,& 800. when you have it up on your computer see if you can see much if any difference between them.

Excellent vlog thanks. I actually live in Ambleside and this has been on my to do list for 2 years. I always say I am waiting for the right conditions. Also not sure how easy to get to people say you have to climb over fences etc and if the river is in full flow you can not cross over. How did you and Mrs. C find it to get in? Thanks

    • @paulcomptonpdphotography
      @paulcomptonpdphotography  3 роки тому

You should! as it sounds like we dont have long to get there, yes you have to walk up and cross the river.. no fence on one side (at the moment)

I been a couple of times, the last in June 21, Its better in Autumn I think while there's still foliage on the trees that we use to frame the Mill and there's a fair amount of water. When I was there I felt the water level was a little low. Never happy are we? The best way to go is up the left and cross the river by the mill & leave the same way the barbed wire is very comfortable. Sadly like others have said I believe the mill has been sold and its to be fenced off with higher fencing so 'togs cannot get to it.

I've visited there 3 times now. Oct 2020 there was so much water flowing it was quite sketchy and I could not get safely up to the ideal shooting spot so had to content myself with slightly more of an upstream direction but couldn't eliminate the sky completely even with autumn foliage. Went there twice in June 2021 - first time very little water flowing and then on my last day I went again as the preceding day it had rained heavily most of the day. was a bit better but not ideal. Hoping to try again in late March on way back from Skye. it's definitely all about the water flow foremost then the foliage. I do get the feeling the landowners are trying to stop people visiting as it's got quite popular with us Togs.

I know exactly what you mean Paul. There is an old mill/wheelhouse in Dunham Park which is my local go to park ( when not jam packed with pensioners on tour ), less than 10 minutes drive from my house. In over 30 years of trying, I have never been able to make a satisfactory photograph of this otherwise most charming building. Some subjects, as attractive as they are, do not lend themselves to a photograph. Nice photos though in their own rights.

Made a visit today in torrential rain. Sadly the mill has now been converted into a private house and it’s well sign posted no access and which way to go for the actual footpath.
