- Inside the Tree from Shadow of the Beast
Composer: David Whittaker
Siolfor the Jackal: Arrangement/Guitars/Bass/Keyboard/Arcade Stick
Serrin's Toes: Arrangement/Drums
Shadow of the Beast is a series I didn't discover until my teens, introduced to the first game by a friend. I was amazed at how the game looked, at the time the parallax scrolling on the overworld blew my mind(Not that I knew what that was back then).
The soundtrack itself is so eerie and adventurous, and I'm happy that I finally got the chance to do something from it. I've been trying to practice some non-guitar stuff more lately, and this seemed like a good opportunity but my mini midi controller didn't have the note range needed for the parts I ended up playing. Configuring my arcade stick to play the needed notes was a fun idea that worked better than expected!

David Whittaker, a genius game music composer from the 80's/90's, who originally composed music for this game for Amiga more than 30yrs ago, never though that his tunes would have like 100 covers or so. What an achievement.
It's wild to think about for sure. Whether he knows it or not, he wrote some absolutely brilliant stuff!
Wote all his compositions in machine code too.
Whittaker is a genius and this cover is awesome
Agreed, such a musical wizard. Thanks!
I still keep coming back to this one!!
I love you too, bro
Pro-grade.
That hits the spot.
Amiga flash backs are coming in.
Cheers!
Amazing!!!!
Thank you!
Oh HELLS yes.
🤘🤘
avesome 👍
this is perfect.. i can't play any instrument but i love movie music and game soundtracks.
Please play some tracks from Turrican II as metal cover... those Chris Huelsbeck tracks are simply excellent and totally timeless
Cheers!
Oh, man. Turrican has some really fun music for sure.
You breathed fresh and unique life in this nostalgic classic. Great work.
Thanks! I appreciate it. It's easy when the original song is so good!
classic game and music
Totally!
On of the best game covers I heard, bravo!
Thanks! It's easy when the original soundtrack is so good!
@@SiolfortheJackal soundtrack is great nodoubt, but I heard many covers and this i like the most. Hoping you'd one day make covers for all the songs from all 3 games :D
Very well done.
Thanks, man! Good to see you here haha
So amazing!
Thanks!
on amiga, this soundtrack was amazing. you did great
Yeah, the Amiga soundtrack is amazing! Thanks, mate!
This is incredible. Reminds me of some Folk Metal bands like Ensiferum aha
Haha cheers. I only got into Ensiferum pretty recently, but I do love me some good folk metal!
I love the combination of synths and instruments it feels so inspired and sounds so good fantastic work on this really
Thanks! This one came together really naturally, glad people like it.
@@SiolfortheJackal your welcome! still great to listen to!
Great opening pad!
Cheers! It's actually two pads layered!
🤘🔥 Solid job, Sio 'n Serrin! Love the tone all around
Cheers, man! We try.
Arcade stick as an instrument? That makes me think of those musicians that dub drum beats over infinite combos and such, haha. Great cover!
It was a fun experiment haha, still easier to learn the notes on that than my mini keyboard. Cheers, dude!
that was lit!
Cheers, mate!
Synth and metal are always a winning combo! Good chugs and great transitionsto the trem picked parts and back.
A winning combo for sure. When it comes to trem picking, I can't help but jam it into almost all of my covers somewhere. Thanks a lot, man!
Wow definitely one of the better covers of this awesome track. Have always loved the music to this game, there’s just something haunting about it that fits the game well.
Would love to hear the wilderness part of the game from you too ( I probably should have looked first to see if you have lol )
I always found these games really creepy in a compelling way even though I didn't play much. The music has always impressed me! We don't often cover stuff from the same games often but i would love to do more from this. Especially the wilderness theme. Maybe one day :D
@@SiolfortheJackal agreed. The atmospherics was what always drew me back to that game even though it really wasn’t THAT good of a game tbf lol. Still think the wilderness would be amazing though. But maybe in the meantime I would definitely recommend splatterhouse 2 mega drive. Music in that game is next level spooky 👻. Would love to hear your take on it.
@@SiolfortheJackal sub well earned 👍
Very cool cover! This song is on my list of covers to do.
Oh yeah, dude. SotB has a wild soundtrack!
AAAAAAAAA SO F*ING GOOD BROTHERS!!!
OUTSTANDING!!
FUH DE EMPRAAAAHHH!!!
Hahaha, cheers!
Bro this is fire!
Thanks a lot!
Very heavy atmosphere and rocking, liked it a lot!
Cheers, dude! Glad you liked it! The game was already pretty spooky and atmospheric so it felt important to keep some of that!
Never expected someone would cover Shadow of the Beast. Loved the heavyness of the riffs!
It's a classic with a rad soundtrack, it had to be done! Glad you liked it!
very nice!
Thanks!
Nice one. Showed the original the respect it's due 👊
Cheers! It's hard not to respect a soundtrack as good as this.
Really unexpected song choice but man, what a great result! Synth and guitars especially sound amazing, love the arrangement, great job!
Cheers, dude! Synths feel like a nice and easy way to add some extra ambience and variation to the sound, so I'm trying to throw some in more often.
The arcade stick pattern are well fitting and sounds awesome !
It's much easier when I can just assign the few notes I need and memorise those patterns! Glad you liked it!
Really nice variety of sounds in here, really good arrangement and playing, great job :)
Thanks, man! We spent a lot of time writing this one trying to get it right!
This is just so good!!!
Thank you, kind stranger. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This is so awesome!!!
Thanks! I really love the original.
Awesome rock arrangement! You guys played great and I like the hype music video with gameplay, and it was also impressive that you were able to use a joystick with buttons to play notes! Well done!
Thanks, man! The game is brutal so I'm glad this area is one of the first ones heh.
@@SiolfortheJackal yeah it's the first I've heard of the game and it looks challenging!
Very nice work indeed!!!! Awesome!
Cheers! Glad you liked it!
Best version I've heard
@@xezazase That means a lot!
Never even heard of this game until now, that's wild. O_O I especially liked the intro and the controller instrument :D
Shadow of the Beast is a classic! It was ported all over the place haha
@@SiolfortheJackal It really needs to be experienced on an AMIGA though. Great work with your cover. It worked well and you maintained its feel. 👌🏻
@@dronescoVKE Thanks a lot! I initially planned to record video clips from the Amiga version but I couldn't get the emulator working in time. Both visually and audibly, the Amiga version is amazing.
First: Oh! I like that synth
Then: Oh spooky!
Then then: 🤘
I was pretty hesitant to start off with synths at first, but I think it sets the mood pretty well! Thanks!
so you're totally using a DDR pad next month right? Think how metal those dance beats will be 🤘💃
rockin' job you two!
Do you want me to die? I am too old and unfit to move like that anymore haha.
Babciu! To jest zajebiste!!
Thank you!
Really good cover. :) How do you make those sounds in the intro?
Cheers :D
I had my controller mapped to a virtual keyboard in my DAW which was recording midi data.
@@SiolfortheJackal Thanks mate :)
this game terrified me so much as a kid
It's a really spooky game for sure. I think that's what drew me to it as a kid.
@@SiolfortheJackal I used to watch my brothers play it and its such a lovely memory looking back!
Very great! :-) What about Dogs Of War?
Thanks! I can't say I'm familiar with Dogs of War though.
It is by David Whittaker, too.@@SiolfortheJackal
Oh rad, I will check that out!
Please, do it cover from game Jaguar XJ220 - Thrash Pig. We need this !!!
Oh, man. My list is already so long but I'm always adding to it haha
Thank You Master !
Thank you for this! I grew up with this great game and the haunting visuals and music never really left me. Just added it to my Shellshocked Radio Recommendation List: ua-cam.com/video/sHtZT3XHNEY/v-deo.html
Truly a special game. Something about it has always stuck with me as well. Thanks!
Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant) vibe.
Ooh, that's a great album. Cheers for the compliment!
это игре кавер ?
Да это прикрытие из игры!
@@SiolfortheJackal понял
Awesome!!!
Cheers! Really enjoyed making this one.
