I've listened to this many times, and I'm just now noticing how the soloist and the orchestra talk with each other. The conversation between them is so beautiful, as different instruments respond to themes that Alma has just played, and she in turns responds to themes that they initiate. Beautiful melodies carried beautifully by each instrument in its turn. Such a gorgeous piece of music.

The violin she is playing is a Stradivarius "The Bucher Stradivarius" made in 1683 and on permanent loan to her by the Tariso Foundation in Italy. Valued at over 10 million dollars. They gave it to her in time for her to use it at her debut at Carnegie Hall in Dec 2019.

Let's just forget for a brief moment what her age is. Completely! After all, she is invariably going to get older and then the novelty of a child would wear off rather swiftly. So let's just look at the musician, her musicianship, her virtuosity, compositional creativity and allegria... Completely regardless of her age, she is composing music that is well crafted, sophisticated, but accessible and indicative of a certain whimsical nature and good humor she tucks into her work. Her violin and piano skills as a player are exceptionally well-developed, and most importantly are more than adequate for her to continue composing music that is reflective of an irrepressible passion to let the music out!
If she is given the latitude, time, and gives herself the patience to mature in a well-rounded fashion to the degree possible in her musical bubble, we can expect some great works from her. It is rare to see such a merging of skillsets and the drive to do something with them. It is going to be a pleasure to watch and listen to her for many years to come, regardless of how old we both might get!

A true masterpiece! Definitely a permanent addition to the classical repertoire - absolutely top-shelf! Second movement is especially impressive, which is a surprise, since most child composers [she wrote it when she was 9] think the slow movements are "boring". Can't say it de-thrones my favorite (Mendelssohn's), but in some respects I think it's superior to Beethoven's (which I'd summarize as "lovely", and would never say anything negative about it, but it's 2nd movement is nothing like Alma's). This piece is here to stay. The world has another violin concerto!!

Yes, it is a masterpiece, albeit 150 years too late. In 2023, this is a romantic pastiche, a juvenalia of an incredibly talented young composer. She'll grow out of it. She's writing the kind of music that she likes -- solidly diatonic, full of melodies, which she has said she considers the most important element in composition (from her 60 Minute interview). But at some point, hopefully in the near future, she'll realize that she can't just imitate Romantic Era masters. At this point, it isn't her composition or her playing that is amazing, it's her age. I can't wait to hear her mature compositions.

Her father gave her her first instructions on how to play the piano at the age of two and she was learning so fast that at first he thought that he was a an amazing teacher, until he realized that Alma was way ahead of him. 😂

Interesting. It's my understanding that a conductor is the one who interprets the piece and therefore decides how it is to be played by the orchestra and soloist. In this case, the soloist is the composer. So, the conductor just makes sure that the orchestra does what she wants?

Ha! - middle section is 3/4 (or 3/8 or 6/8 - whatever). The main theme is a 4-beat.

She is amazing, a prodigy, no doubt and a totally skilled composer. But the first movement is a bit boring in my view... I think the last movement is more interesting, happy and remarkable. Only one point about her writing. Imagine a painter of our days painting pictures with an Impressionist technique and style. That painter would be considered old-fashioned, "academic" because he/she uses the language of past times. I'm afraid this is the same point with this concert. It looks back to the Romanticism. She could explore new horizons with her immense talent and not look too much to the past just to be considered one of the greatest composers of our time. I know it's her personal decision but I believe she's wasting her talent in "Romanticized" concerts... We already have Mendelssohn, Brahms and Bruckner among others to listen to Romantic concerts. There are hundreds of options to choose. I hope she will evolve to more advanced compositions, although it depends on her decisions.
