I have been listening to this piece of music for 70 years now, and I believe this is the best version I have ever heard. The depth of expression especially from the strings was superb, and I could not fault anything at all. Sublimely majestic, moving, the pace exactly on point especially with the unhurried Nimrod, with its crescendos never failing to evoke emotion. Well done

I am in total agreement with your comments. I first heard the Enigma Variations when I was about 5 years old in 1946. My father was a church organist and musician who left me with a love of Elgar, Brahms and many other composers . I have watched this particular performance many times and it never fails to move me. a wonderful orchestra and superb performers. Even the filming is excellent and I can almost imagine I am actually sitting in that audience.

I think the key change is from G major to Eb major with the top note of a chord of G being held on from the end of one variation into Nimrod, to become the third in a chord of Eb. So simple yet so effective.

Also, a little thing that adds to the effect of this change is, that (as i suppose by listening to it; I did not check with the score) the first ground note in the Eb major chord is not an Eb, but the fifth of the chord, Ab, then changing to Bb when the harmony goes to Bflat major. making the eflat major only really understandable when it already passed. maybe this adds to the magic of this transition :-)

For my money the mysterious theme that Elgar based the Enigma Variations on was the Westminster Chimes of Big Ben. Imagine the amusement he would derive from everyone searching for the solution when they were hearing it booming out to the whole of London every hour on the hour. leonard Bernstein knew the secret , he put Big Ben clock tower on the cover of his recording of this masterwork. An authentic performance like this gives the lie to the old chestnut that the most 'sympathetic' renditions of a work will come from an orchestra hailing from the composer's homeland. I've heard these wonderful variations so many times since the 1950s but I felt I was wearing new ears tonight! Sensitive solos, the percussion and brass shone, and clearly Mr Kaspszyk really _gets_ Elgar. The sound people did ever so well, too, with mics picking up little details we often miss. I subscribed, of course.

I was a Tympanist in an award winning band in HS. In 1964 to 7, we produced 15 professional classical and Jazz musicians. I know them all. As a time keeper, feeling each pulse of the beat is extra hard. If you add a Parlando or Rubato Parlando to make a phrase speak, as a timekeeper you simply hope you don't have a part or your part is to bring everyone back to the beat. When I watched these musicians waiting as a large group for the last possible moment in the Parlando or Rubato Parlando sections, I knew instantly how good this orchestra is. To value playing as one is to value the emotion above all else. And life is hard. It is hard to be in sync with everyone else on every performance. Why orchestra musicians need a steady gig with a living wage. You can't be unduly stressed out and play like that. I know from the very competent but emotionally thin performances of the constantly disappearing and reappearing Detroit Symphony with one of the greatest halls (Orchestra Hall) and one of the most unreliable donor bases.
